Many of these developments ended with the first functional prototypes in which multiple electronic boards are mixed by wiring/soldering and then used in datalogging activities. In this study we present a new, simple, robust, and expandable datalogger board based on maker’s community integrations. Our datalogger board extends previous work in this area as we designed an Arduino Mega 2560 derivative integrated board that is c

Farmers' field trials conducted in western Kentucky counties in 1995 and 1996 showed that dramatic reductions in insecticide usage are possible using scouting and action thresholds. Five-acre plots were scouted and treated according to action thresholds while adjacent 5-acre plots were treated weekly with insecticides. Seven out of 10 insecticide sprays were eliminated, saving $65/acre for the 1995 season. There were no differences in yield, insect damage, or fruit quality between the scouted plots and the plots that were treated weekly. Assuming similar low pest populations in all 885 acres o

Abstract At slope and valley floor sites in the Owens Valley of California, the late afternoon near-surface air temperature decline is often followed by a temporary temperature rise before the expected nighttime cooling resumes. The spatial and temporal patterns of this evening warming phenomenon, as seen in the March/April 2006 Terrain-Induced Rotor Experiment, are investigated using a widely distributed network of 51 surface-based temperature dataloggers. Hypotheses on the causes of the temperature rises are tested using heavily instrumented 34-m meteorological towers that were located withi

Abstract. The electrical conductivity (EC) of a medium invaded by TDR sensors can be estimated from the impedance of a TDR reflectogram. Four categories of sensor were tested in salt solutions and the impedances of the TDR pulse wave were correlated to the EC of the solution. The relation between the impedance and EC over a wide range of conductivities is non-linear but stable. Second- to fourth-degree polynomials can extend the measurement range to 44 dS m-1 (equivalent to a NaCl concentration of 28 g l-1 or 0.48 N) and result in better prediction of the conductivities than linear relations.

Environmental monitoring is an effective tool to identify problems in anthropic areas, and the emergence of cyber-physical sensors contributes to technological advances in the area. This paper introduces a device based on the Arduino cyber-physical platform to monitor air temperature and relative humidity in real-time with high efficiency. With the relationship between these two environmental variables, it will be possible to calculate the Heat Index (CI), the Temperature and Humidity Index (ITU), the Effective Temperature Index (ET), and the Thermal Discomfort Index (IDT). Where models exist for predicting water and heat movement through soils, soil conductivity, thermal diffusivity, and soil bulk density are required. To overcome difficult physical properties of soil, the soil temperature measurement was designed and built directly and accurately with locally sourced materials.
