Landfills are major sources of environmental pollution. This study evaluated heavy metal concentrations in soils and plants around the closed Lumberstewart landfill in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, to determine the pollution potential of a closed landfill and the risks they present to plants growing in this environment and surrounding communities. Soil samples were collected at depths of 0–30 cm, 30–60 cm, and 60–90 cm around the landfill and at a control site and characterized for various properties and concentrations of Cd, Cu, Cr, Fe, Ni, and Zn. This study investigated the phytochemical characteristics and antioxidant activity in leaves, roots, stem, flower, and seed parts of Datura alba (D. alba). The study also assessed the heavy metal (Cr, Mn, Zn, and Cu) accumulation in each part of the plant. Among the phytochemicals, alkaloids were found only in leaves while tannins, flavonoids, and phenols were present in all parts of the plant. For antioxidant activity, free radical scavenging assay for 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) was performed using ascorbic acid as the standard. Higher activity was shown by stem extract in methanol

The excitation spectra have been de-convoluted into the individual groups responsible for metal ion uptake. At least four unique binding sites can be described as being responsible for metal ion uptake. The higher affinity sites involve carboxylates

In areas where heavy metals are introduced into or onto land where they would not normally be present at elevated concentrations, then that land could be considered to be contaminated. A simple way of determining the magnitude of contamination by heavy metals is to measure the total metal concentration in the soil. However, this simple measure is a poor way of assessing the potential risks to the environment and human health. A more effective risk assessment can be achieved by analysing the proportion of the total metal that exists in a mobile or bioavailable form, in other words, the metal so

In these processes the leaching operation is paramount to the overall efficiency. Abstract In this report, a practical finite element design method is developed for metal/polymer/metal laminated components. An analysis is presented which will predict the damping characteristics of laminated structures. Predictions of natural frequencies, loss factors, and frequency responses are compared to experimental data and closed form solutions for simple geometries. The analysis is then used to determine the damping characteristics of a laminated design. It is then shown how to use the analysis to improve the damping quality of the component.
