Abstract:
Ce travail etudie la place de daudet, romancier, dans l'histoire litteraire et culturelle, et en particulier ses rapport s avec le naturalisme. Il s'interroge sur les raisons pour lesquelles on a vue en daudet un romancier de l'ecole, un ecrivain pour la jeunesse. Une reflexion sur les sources de l'inspiration romanesque conduit a analyser les interferences entre les contes et les romans. La forte implication de l'auteur dans son oeuvre justifie qu'on se penche sur les ambiguites de la veine autobiographique. Il n'y a pas un mais des midis de daudet : a quoi correspond cette representation complexe et constrat ee? un chapitre est consacre au mode de creation des personnages, a la maniere dont daudet donne l'illusion de la vie (art d u portrait et psychologi) et a la valorisation de la vie privee qu'illustre la peinture du groupe familial. La sensibilite du romancier est un prisme ou se deforme le reel; deux tonalites dominent: le burlesque, lie a la parodie , et le pathetique, accorde au pessimisme de l'auteur. L'esthetique de la rupture caracterise cet art romanesque qui donne la priorite a la sensation et s'inspire de la modernite. Le scepticisme de daudet trouve son expression naturelle dans cet "impressionnisme"
The thesis reconsiders un unsatisfactorily treated aspect of daudet's works : his novels. It aims to determine the relation ship with naturalism, and to understand the reasons why the author has long been considered as a writer for the school, for the youth. A study of the sources of his inspiration leads to analyse the interconnections between short stories and novels. The strong implication of the author in his works justifies a reflection on the ambiguities of the autobiographical vein. There is not only one, but several "midis" of daudet : what is the meaning of such a contrasted representation of proven ce? one chapter attempts to show how daudet creates his characters, how he gives the illusion of life through portrait a nd psychology; it stresses on the very great importance given to private life, which explains that the representation of the family unit is a touch stone in his novels. The sensibility of the novelist is a prism through which reality is distorted. Two tunes are dominant : the burlesque, t ied to parody and the pathos, expressing the pessimism of the writer. The aesthetic of fragmentation characterizes this art which gives priority to the sensation and portrays readily the modern aspects of the world. Daudet's scepticism expresses itself through this "impressionism"

Il construit, en opposition avec le continuisme des théories lamarckiennes de l'évolution, sa propre conception de l'hérédité. Une fois posé le "principe du discontinu", il élabore une thérapeutique destinée à guérir le mal héréditaire. Grâce à l'analogie, forme à la fois logique et poétique, il rend compte de l'organisation de la mémoire héréditaire en types ainsi que du processus métaphorique qui la fait participer à la vie actuelle. Et pas seulement de ceux qui sont une fois menteurs, mais aussi de ceux qui le sont deux fois : les marchands d'illusions. Personne ne leur échappe et personne n'a la volonté de leur échapper d'ailleurs. C'est la vie ou la lutte pour la vie. Le mensonge est compliqué et difficile à utiliser. Le jeune Daudet, arraché au pays qui l'a vu naître, a gardé dans les yeux les souvenirs qui parsèment son oeuvre: les habitants, leurs moeurs, les paysages, les odeurs, les sensations. Son aptitude à observer tout ce qui l'entoure, lui confère une excellente faculté de description. À Paris, il vit pleinement dans et avec la société de son temps et que nous retrouvons décrite dans ses oeuvres. Sa production littéraire se confond avec son activité de journaliste. Dans son art d'écrire et de décrire, indépendamment de l'objet du texte, il s'en dégage une valorisation des éléments de la nature. Son attachement à la nature s'inscrit dans le texte aussi bien par le petit détail que par les minutieuses et longues descriptions. Daudet place le lecteur face à une nature multi-fonctionnelle et inter-active. Les arbres disent "Adieu" à Daniel Eyssette; la forêt de Sénart protège Robert Helmont; la forêt appelle Jack dans ses bras pour le soigner de toutes ses peines; la forêt offre à Richard Fénigan le chant des rossignols pour participer à sa joie; la montagne repit Blanquette et lui fait des honneurs de princesse; le bois inspire des vers à M. Le Sous-Préfet. La forêt joue parfois le rôle de personnage principal et Wood'stown s'élève au rang d'épopée. Parallèlement à cette nature qui se dit à la troisième personne, Daudet, ofîre sa Msion de nature, le rôle que celle-ci détient dans sa vie. Le lyrisme se révèle alors dans une dialectique auteurlnature. Il'est aisé de vérifier la fréquente transposition de l'expression lyrique de Daudet sur les personnages de ses oeuvres. La nature y apparaît comme étant une valeur universelle et intemporelle; les descriptions d'éléments de nature s'intègrent dans le texte avec une fonction déterminée. À l'impossibilité de dissocier l'homme de son oeuvre, l'analyse de la nature permet de postuler cet élément comme une constante de l'univers poétique et viventiel daudétien. La nature habite aussi bien la Provence que Paris, qu'Alger ou la Suisse. La nature apparaît comme un élément unificateur de l'expression lyrique d'Alphonse Daudet. La Me en général, la nature en particulier, enchantent le poète; l'écriture lui permet cette double jouissance. Au lecteur, le plaisir de lire...
Young Daudet, unrooted from the land which saw him come into this world, kept in his soul reminiscences that rw through his writing: the people, the habits and customs, the scenery, the smells, the sensations. His skill to observe everythmg around him, grants him an excellent abhty for description. In Paris, he lives in full and with the society of his time and describes it in his work. His literary output is often mistaken with journalitic activity. I . his art of writing and describing, no matter what the object of the text, we can always grasp the value given to the elements of Nature. His dedication to Nature can be seen both in the meticulous details, as well as, the long descriptions. Daudet confronts the reader with a multifhctional and interactive Nature. The trees say goodbye to Daniel Eysette, the Skart Forest protects Robert Helmont, the forest calls Jack to her lap to cure all his grief, the forest offers Richard Fkigan the singing of the nightgale to take part in his joy, the mountain receives Blanquette honouring her like a princess, the woods inspire Mr Sous-Prkfet to write verse. Sometimes, the forest plays the major role and Wood'stm rises to epic status. Besides this Nature which is presented in the third person, Daudet offers us, at the same time, his own vision of Nature, the role it plays in his life. Lyricism is revealed in the dialectic authorNature. The frequent transposition of Daudet's lyric expression to the characters in his work can easy be seen. In his work, Nature stands out, as a universal and timeless value; the description of the elements of Nature fitting into the text with a specific function. To the impossibility of separating man fiom work the analysis of Nature allows the establishment of this as a constant in the poetic and living universe of Daudet. Nature is revealed both in Provence, as well as Alger or in Swkzerdand. Nature stands out as an unifjrlng force in Alphonse Daudet's lyric expression. Life in general and Nature in particular overwhelm the poet life allowing him this double pleasure. The reader is left to enjoy reading.

Des trois auteurs français Zola, Daudet et Malot, l'on ne connaît le plus souvent que Les Rougon-Macquart, les contes, les nouvelles et les romans populaires. Leur œuvre témoigne pourtant d'une plus grande variété qui se justifie par leur carrière d'écrivain-journaliste. Comme leurs prédécesseurs les plus célèbres, Balzac, Hugo et Stendhal, ils tentent d'abord de se faire un nom dans le milieu journalistique avant de devenir plus tard des écrivains reconnus. Comme Vallès, les Goncourt, Baudelaire et Banville, ils considèrent aussi que ce chemin initial garantit l'autonomie de l'homme de lettres. Mais ce ne sont pas seulement l'essor de la presse, le développement technique et l'accroissement du lectorat qui les contraignent à cette pratique de la polygraphie dans divers organes. Les grandes villes les amènent à s'intéresser aux mœurs sociales ainsi qu'à l'actualité politique et artistique, à tel point que ce reportage à Paris et à Londres finit par les inspirer pour l'élaboration de certains romans. Les trois observateurs curieux vont travailler comme enquêteurs dans la rue, en mettant en place une écriture du réel adapté au genre journalistique et littéraire. D'un discours sur le trottoir dans La Rue, Le Boulevard, Le Figaro ou L'Événement illustré, l'on aboutit à une conception moderne de la création qui rejoint par certains aspects la démarche des peintres impressionnistes et des dessinateurs de la presse sous le Second Empire. Au-delà de sa signification sociale et historique, l'évolution du parcours éclaire ainsi les enjeux du travail et du statut symbolique de l'écrivain-journaliste et révèle l'impact des premiers écrits sur l'esthétique des romanciers modernes
When asked about the three authors Zola, Daudet and Malot, most only know Les Rougon-Macquart, the stories, the novellas as well as the popular novels. Their works however show a much larger variety, which is the result of their careers as writers and journalists. Like their most famous predecessors Balzac, Hugo and Stendhal, they tried to become established in the world of journalism before becoming renowned writers. Just like Vallès, the brothers Goncourt, Baudelaire and Banville, the trio also assumed this initial step would guarantee the autonomy of the literary man. But it was not only the rise in press publication, the technical development and the growth of their readership that forced them to use their talents in multiple ways. The big cities awoke their interest in the social morals, the political and artistic events of their time, so much so that their reports from Paris or London become inspiration for certain novels. The three curious observers carried out research in the streets, at the same time creating a language based on reality and adapted both to the journalistic and the literary genre. From a pavement conversation in La Rue, Le Boulevard, Le Figaro or L'Événement illustré, they arrived at a modern conception of creation, certain aspects of which resemble the techniques used by the Impressionist painters and press illustrators of the "Second Empire". Beyond its social and historical meaning, the evolution of their careers thus highlights the importance of their work and the symbolic status of the writer and also reveals the impact of the first writings on the aesthetics of the three more "modern" novelists

Cette thèse prend pour objet l’ensemble de l’œuvre en prose d’Alphonse Daudet pour rendre compte des multiples aspects qu’y assume le thème de la crise, cette dernière étant entendue moins comme un concept philosophique que comme le noyau fédérateur d’une représentation de l’histoire, articulant le domaine social et la sphère privée, largement redevable d’un imaginaire d’époque. L’analyse s’articule autour de trois axes principaux : d’abord, la composante historicisée de la crise, que favorise l’ancrage temporel propre au roman daudétien, est étudiée dans sa dimension chronologique, en relation aux événements marquants de l’époque, tels que la guerre de 1870, la Commune, le parlementarisme. Dans un deuxième temps, la problématisation de la quête identitaire et de la saisie idéologique des personnages permet de déceler les ressorts d’une crise se manifestant à l’intérieur du domaine privé, pour glisser progressivement vers la scène sociale. L’étude d’un personnage tel que l’artiste-écrivain fonctionne ainsi comme medium dans la représentation de ce passage qui aboutit, dans les derniers romans daudétiens, à une forme de nihilisme propre à la fin de siècle qui réactive l’héritage schopenhauerien et les théories darwiniennes. Une importance particulière a enfin été accordée au microcosme familial : l’hypothèse que cette institution sociale fonctionne comme espace privilégié d’inversion des valeurs a été démontrée à l’aide d’une analyse méthodique des fonctions thématiques de l’enfant et son parcours de formation, ainsi que du rôle de la mère et du père. La prise en compte de l’enjeu de la filiation et de l’institution du mariage a corroboré l’hypothèse consistant à considérer la famille comme un terrain potentiel de dysfonctionnement sur le plan privé, paradigmatique d’une crise de valeurs qui traverse les rôles sociaux
The purpose of this thesis is to account for a variety of topics in Alphonse Daudet’s novels referring to the concept of crisis in values from a corpus of texts between 1866 and 1897. To offer a rewriting of the patterns of Daudet’s social perspective, I provide an original view of the crisis by articulating three different aspects: first, the references to the historical background underline a historical form of crisis that I analyze from a chronological point of view. Second, the ideological perception of the characters and their evolution reveal a process of search for identity characterized by an inner form of crisis which is extended to the entire society. The analysis of a typical character such as the artist and writer shows the extension of this devaluation in the social sphere: Daudet’s last novels explore the legacy of Schopenhauer’s and Darwin’s theories. The third part is based on the hypothesis that the social pattern of the family reveals a form of inversion in values. This hypothesis is confirmed by the study of the narrative function of three specific roles : the child and his process of development, motherhood and fatherhood as far as their evolution as a couple and the relationship with childhood is presented. The conclusion is the emergence of a dysfunction that might also affect the intimate sphere. Thus, reconstructing the structure of Daudet’s point of view as far as society is perceived might offer us new models of interpreting his role as a writer and the function of writing

Abstract:
En primer lugar, hay una biografía de Daudet haciendo hincapié en la recepción que tuvo su obra cuando se publicó en Francia para compararla así con la recepción de esta obra traducida en el momento de su venta en Cataluña.
Hay también una breve biografía de cada traductor donde destaca su vinculación a la lengua y a la literatura francesa y su labor de traductor. En el análisis de cada traducción estudia el paratexto, las divergencias estilísticas y semánticas y la adaptación lingüística y cultural entre el texto original y el catalán. También comento las reseñas de las críticas aparecidas en los diarios y revistas de la época.
La conclusión es, por una parte, el papel importante de las traducciones en el momento de estudiar y documentar la recepción de Daudet en catalán así como el papel desempeñado por los diferentes movimientos literarios catalanes a los cuales pertenecen los traductores y que han condicionado la traducción: modernisme, noucentisme, el vacío de la dictadura franquista y el boom editorial de los años ochenta. Por otra parte, se ha averiguado qué parte de la obra de Daudet (la de temática provenzal, las obras de teatro o las novelas realistas) ha sido la más traducida y por qué.

Abstract:
Il peut sembler incongru de vouloir étudier l’esthétique de la mort dans l’œuvre d’Alphonse Daudet. En effet, à cause de sa renommée souvent réduite aux Lettres de mon moulin et au Petit Chose, cet auteur a trop souvent été présenté comme l'archétype du joyeux provençal qui, dans un moulin griffonne quelques lettres un brin de blé aux lèvres. Pourtant, la mort est omniprésente dans son œuvre. Protéiforme, elle affecte tous les genres et toutes les situations. Chez Daudet, cette poétique de la mort est indissociable du contexte littéraire dans lequel s’inscrit son œuvre, celui du naturalisme. Comme les naturalistes, Daudet rejette l’idéalisme romantique d’une mort comme sublimation et transformation. Il refuse également l’imaginaire débridé et paroxystique du roman populaire, tout comme les meurtres atroces du grand guignol sanguinolent. En revanche, il utilise la mort comme ressort dramatique et comme procédé romanesque de clôture. Il témoigne également d’une sobriété certaine dans l’écriture de la mort. La mort fonctionne aussi chez Daudet comme un révélateur, le reflet d’une société marquée par ses inégalités sociales, son pessimisme et son désenchantement. Mais loin de prôner un pessimisme radical, Daudet le dénonce et récuse l’absurdité sans appel d’une vie conçue comme une souffrance éternelle. La mort engendre alors un double mouvement d’adhésion et de mise à distance. Elle génère une tension entre sens et absurde. Elle présente une libération paradoxale en même temps qu’elle exprime l’absurdité de la condition humaine. Mais, autre paradoxe, par son absurdité même la mort impose un sens à la vie. La singularité de la vision de la mort et de la vie dans l’œuvre de Daudet vient de son expérience personnelle de la maladie qui lui fait affronter la mort bien plus qu’un théoricien ne pourrait le faire. L’ambivalence de sa vision de la mort fait de Daudet un témoin lucide qui regarde à distance une époque instable où les valeurs se transforment et où le sens de la vie et de la mort en crise se cherche
It may appear unseeming to want to study the esthetics of death in Alphine Daudet’s works. Effectively, because of his reputation repeatedly reduced to his works Lettres de mon moulin and Petit Chose, the author has been often presented as the stereotype of a joyful provincial who scribbles a few letters in a barn with a piece of straw hanging from his lips. However, death is omnipresent in his works. Protean, death affects all the genres and all situations. In Daudet, this poetry of death is an integral part in the literary context of his works, that of naturalism. Like the naturalists, Daudet rejects the romantic idealism of death as sublimation and transformation. He also refuses the unrestrained, intense imaginary of the popular novel, just as he rejects the bloody atrocious murders of the grand puppet. On the contrary, he uses death as a dramatic motivation and as a romantic closing procedure. He also shows a certain restrain in writing about death. Thus, death for Daudet, functions as a revelation, the reflection of a society marked by its social disparities, by his pessimism and his disillusionment. But far from advocating a radical pessimism, Daudet deplores and challenges the absurdity without appeal of a life conceived for eternal suffering. Death therefore creates a double movement of adhesion and refutation. Death engenders strain between reason and the absurd. Death represents a paradoxical liberation at the same time as it expresses the absurdity of the human condition. Further, another paradox, by its own absurdity, death imposes a meaning to life. The singularity of Daudet’s vision of life and death emanates from his personal experiences with illness that confronted him face to face with death in a way that no theoretician could do. The ambivalence of his vision of death presents Daudet as a lucid witness who looks on an unstable epoch in which values are changing and where the meaning of life and death, in crisis, is looking for an answer

Abstract:
Drawing on Hans Robert Jauss' theory of the horizon of expectations, I examine a character type that George Gissing identifies in the title of his short story "A Victim of Circumstances" (1893) as it appears in four works: Charles Dickens' Bleak House (1853), Alphonse Daudet's Jack (1876), Gissing's Workers in the Dawn (1880) and Veranilda (1903). This thesis reveals how these novelists converse about individual agency and deterministic circumstances. It argues that these three Victorian novelists repeatedly subvert simplistic readings of their characters as passive victims and, in this way, suggest the greater importance of perceptive social reading as a way of dealing with adverse circumstances. It thus illuminates Gissing's status as a reader and writer who is heavily influenced by his contemporaries, and sheds light, to a limited extent, on the impacts of both Dickens on French literature and Daudet on Victorian British literature.
Par l'entremise du cadre théorique d'horizon des attentes développé par Hans Robert Jauss, cette thèse examine le type de personnage que George Gissing caractérise dans le titre de son conte "A Victim of Circumstances" (1893), et ce, dans quatre oeuvres: Bleak House (1953) de Charles Dickens, Jack (1876) d'Alphonse Daudet et de Gissing, Workers in the Dawn (1880) et Veranilda (1903). La thèse met en évidence le discours de ces écrivains sur les choix de l'individu et les circonstances déterministes. L'argument avancé dans la thèse est que ces trois romanciers de l'époque victorienne résistent couramment à une lecture simpliste qui représenterait leurs personnages comme des victimes passives, et ainsi soulignent l'importance d'une mise en contexte social de la lecture afin de permettre la compréhension de circonstances difficiles. La thèse révèle que Gissing est à la fois un lecteur et un écrivain fortement influencé par ses contemporains. De plus, elle examine, dans un petit échantillon de textes, l'influence de Dickens sur la littérature française et celle de Daudet sur la littérature britannique de l'époque victorienne.

A. Daudet est un des ecrivains qui s'inspirerent des aspects de la societe de son epoque dans ses oeuvres, comme e. Zola, les freres goncourt et g. De maupassant. Etant donne que ses textes, prenant pour toile de fond la vie en region parisienne et en provence, refletent les aspects de la societe de la france du xixe siecle, nous pouvons le considerer comme un temoin de son temps, afin d'observer certains aspects d'une de ces deux regions, nous avons pris pour objet d'etude la provence et une serie de textes, et en particulier les recits des lettres de mon moulin, des contes du lundi et du petit chose. Dans ces chroniques provencales, nous avons saisi son attachement envers tous les aspects de la vie qui se deployaient aux alentours de son pays natal - la nature, les hommes, les coutumes, la flore et la faune. Nous nous sommes donc efforces de reveler dans ce travail la vraie figure de la provence de son epoque, en eclairant les rapports entre l'auteur et cette region, qui apparaissent dans ses textes. En somme, l'auteur a reussi a nous livrer avec fidelite les aspects de la societe provencale du dix-neuvieme siecle, en nous montrant l'image d'une provence qui perdait son glorieux passe aux depends de la modernisation, la vie des petites gens et les traditions qui disparaissent. Nous sommes enfin parvenus a conclure que son oeuvre etait pleine de la vie provencale
Alphonse daudet is one writer whose works were inspired by aspect of his contemporary society. Given the fact that his texts, using as a background decor life in the region of paris and in provence, reflect different aspects of ninteenth century french society, we can consider him as a true witness of his time. In order to observe certain aspects of one of these two regions, we have chosen provence and a series of texts about it as the object of our study and, in particular, stories from "lettres de mon moulin", "contes du lundi", and "le petit chose". In these texts, we have seen his attachment towards every aspect of life that is exhibited surrounding his mill. We therefore did our best in this work to reveal a portrait of provence in his era, by shedding light on the relationship between the author and provence. In all, alphonse daudet succeeded in delivering to us various aspects of ninteenth century life in provence, by showing us the image of a provence that had just lost its glorious past due to modernisation, lower-class lifestyles, and the disappearance of traditions. We arrived at the conclusion that his work was filled with life in provence

Most Taiwanese students have difficulty in reading French literature. We choose the childhood and adolescence literature as teaching material in order to teach French in Taiwan. This research is to resolve the following question: how can the teachers in Taiwan apply the childhood and adolescence literature to teach French language and culture? We work on this thesis from two aspects: theory and teaching. First, we study relationship between the time of the writer and his article. Next, we propose a semiotic method to study the children personages' names, their portraits and their narrative functions in the story. In practical way, we recommend teaching activities and suggest a proposal in order to create the literary and intercultural communication between the chosen romances and the Taiwanese students

La période 1870-1914 est une ère de paix relative pour la France. Apres la défaite de 1870, la politique revancharde française ranime les efforts impérialistes de colonisation en Afrique et dans les iles. Cet élan colonialiste se traduit dans la pratique du sport qui gagne de popularité et devient le moyen idéal d’acheminer les idéaux républicains. L’alpinisme et la course aux sommets des Alpes deviennent alors symboliques de l’imaginaire de conquête présent dans l’esprit de la bourgeoisie européenne. Bien que ce phénomène soit l’objet de plusieurs études historico-culturelles, telles que celles d’Olivier Hoibian, Philippe Joutard et Dominique Lejeune, rares sont les études de la représentation de la mentalité colonialiste dans les œuvres de littérature alpine, qui, selon moi, capturent cette mentalité de façon unique et forte. L’analyse littéraire des deux textes sélectionnés montre comment la mentalité impérialiste se traduit dans l’appropriation et l’exploitation de l’espace montagnard. Les notions de progrès et de civilisation jouent le rôle d’étendards pour une domination évidente du capital et de la modernisation qui caractérise l’Europe du XIXe siècle, et auxquels les Alpes n’échappent pas.

L'expression "roman de moeurs" apparaît, a priori, comme une appellation floue et datée. La présente recherche porte sur l'essai d'une définition générique. A partir d'un corpus de sept romans européens de la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle (Trollope, Daudet, Fontane et Palacio Valdés), il s'agit de situer le roman de moeurs par rapport à son appréhension du réel dans une perspective historique, sociologique et structurelle. D'un point de vue idéologique, il nous offre la peinture d'un univers apparemment familier. Roman historique du temps présent, il n'est en fait que partiellement réaliste. Impressionniste, le chroniqueur des moeurs s'inspire du moraliste du siècle précédent. Il actualise les types de personnages en les intégrant à des scènes de genre, tableaux typiques d'une vaste comédie sociale. Le parti pris affiché montre un certain didactisme mais sans atteindre le dogmatisme du roman à thèse. Le réalisme humain et la représentation de la bonne société éloignent le roman de moeurs du roman naturaliste. Enfin, s'est posée la question d'une décontextualisation possible de la notion qui l'érigerait en genre. Autrement dit, existe-t-il un roman de moeurs universel ? A travers cette esthétique du compromis, la réponse semble en partie affirmative
The expression "novel of manners" seems, a priori, vague and dated. The purpose of this present research is to define the novel of manners as a form of literary genre. Using a corpus of seven european novels from the second half of the nineteenth century (Trollope, Daudet, Fontane and Palacio Valdés) as a starting point, this thesis situates the novel of manners, with regard to its apprehension of reality, into historical, sociological, and structuralist contexts. From an ideological point of view, the novel of manners offers us a picture of a seemingly familiar world. A historical chronicle of contemporary times, it is a genre that is only partially realist. Impressionistic in his style the novelist recounts the manners inspired by the morals of the eighteenth century. He reinvigorates literary tropes and integrates them into scenes of genre, creating typical tableaux of the social comedy. The premise displays a certain didacticism but it does not rise to the level of the dogmatism of the roman à thèse. The genre's representation of proper society distances the novel of manners from the naturalist novel. In the end, the question presented is of the possible decontextualization of the very essence that elevates the novel of manners to the status of a genre. In other words, can we speak of the novel of manners as an enduring genre ? Upon an analysis of this aesthetic of compromise, the thesis concludes that the response is in part affirmative

This thesis aims to study the representation of unhappy childhood and its spaces in François le Champi (1848), Le Petit Chose (1868) and Germinal (1885), referring to the text-image relationship. It is about showing how George Sand, Alphonse Daudet and Émile Zola approach this theme in their works. The text-image relationship is dealt with using several illustrated editions that renew the reading of these novels. The issue is to show that the works are written at different times and relate to different contexts and aesthetics, and yet there are similarities in the treatment of this issue by the authors. The reflection also pictures space not only as a mere support for actions, but as being oriented in such a way that unhappy childhood is perceptible through this space elements which is both geographical and moral. The illustrated editions of these works, which usually form part of youth collections, enrich reading by suggesting representations of both scenes, characters, and places in these stories

S'y Avec l'émergence de la révolution industrielle, les populations rurales se dirigèrent vers les centres industriels tissèrent des structures sociales simples, aboutissant à une nouvelle forme de ville : la ville industrielle, dont la caractéristique la plus importante, avant la présence du milieu ouvrier, réside dans celle d’une usine ou d’une mine, pleine d'objets et d'inventions mécaniques et techniques. La présente recherche se propose pour but de présenter cette ville industrielle en tant que produit le plus typique du XIXe siècle, avec ses composants techniques et ses habitants ouvriers. With the emergence of the industrial revolution, country people moved to the new industrial centers. Through this movement appeared a new social class, the working class, crowding in the cities and also in the suburbs around the factories. To minimize the distance between the places of work and the residences, a lot habitations appear suddenly out of earth around industrial factories. In those areas, simple social structures were created leading to a new city shape: the industrial city whose main characteristic, before the setting of the working class, is the factory or the mine, places full of industrial items, mechanical inventions and techniques. The present research aims at introducing this industrial city as the most typical product of the nineteenth century through its technical components and its working class. The city is considered as one of the main element in the novel as far as becoming the basic and strong support of their intrigue. Without neglecting the substancial and amazing effect and the consequences of the machine in the daily life and without forgetting that the technical revolution is supported and materialized by the machine itself, the thesis analyses, through the studied novels, the role of those machines in the emergence of the industrial city as well as its effects in the daily life of the working class. The study is developed by a portrait of the working class, main users of the machines and a description of the technical and industrial incarnations in their lifes, their work and their habits. With the nineteenth century's literature and especially through the naturalist movement, this social class is for the first time analysed by considering its monotonous daily life, its little dramas, its manners and its mentality. Therefore the negative effects of the industrialization and of the mechanization on the working class appear in the literature, and some writers try to solve the problem by creating utopia

Ce terme fait jaillir les figures de critiques du XIXe siècle, dont les noms sont demeurés plus ou moins gravés dans la mémoire et dans l’histoire littéraire : Barbey d’Aurevilly, Léon Bloy, Léon Daudet, mais aussi Pontmartin, Remy de Gourmont ou Jean-Marie Guyau... auteurs fascinants par leur virulence, leur refus de la modernité, leurs positions philosophiques hors-norme ou novatrices... La présente étude tend à montrer la diversité qui peut animer ce groupe, qui se définit par la négative comme « ceux qui s’opposent à la littérature de Zola ». Cette alliance des contraires leur permet de se constituer en force à part entière sur l’échiquier littéraire.Pour appréhender cette tension entre la pluralité des figures et la force d’un groupe dont l’unité se fracasse sur l’affaire Dreyfus, une première partie proposera quelques parcours dans la sociologie et la philosophie de l’époque, qui mettent en évidence un paysage complexe, traversées par d’étranges phénomènes de ruptures et de continuité. Puis, en questionnant la manière dont les antinaturalistes mettent en forme un discours critique. Observation of some of the phenomena of tolerance to soluble protein antigens and allogeneic tissue transplants in Xenopus laevis has formed the framework of the present study. The method of larval induction of high-zone tolerance used in this laboratory has been confirmed and further analysed. Larvae treated with high doses of Human-γ-globulin (HGG) were unable to produce anti-HGG antibody after challenge. The proliferative response demonstrated in the spleens of tolerant toadlets 21 days after challenge was, however, of similar magnitude to that in normally responding animals. Adoptive transfer of high-zone tolerance specific to HGG was demonstrated by intravenous inoculation of tolerant histocompatible splenocytes simultaneously with an antigenic challenge via the dorsal lymph sac. This is indicative of the active involvement of a suppressor T-cell population. The induction of high-zone tolerance in X. laevis results in changes in spleen cell populations as demonstrated by buoyant density gradient separation. Spleen cell sub-populations taken from the separated layers were not, however, effective in the adoptive transfer of tolerance. A normal lymphocyte transfer reaction was observed in X. laevis to show a number of characteristics seen in the mammalian reaction. The use of mitomycin-C treated donor cells and early thymectomized hosts has demonstrated that the phenomenon is composed of donor and host components which are largely distinct from each other. Implantation of allogeneic larval spleens resulted in the induction of transplantation tolerance or impaired rejection in a significant proportion of skin grafted toadlets in which both the donor and host larvae were up to and including stage 51 at the time of transplantation. The implication of these results is that immunomaturity of the donor and host is important in the induction of transplantation tolerance but that other factors must also be involved.

Esta tese analisa aspectos da atuação do empresariado brasileiro entre 1930 e 1951 em busca de um diálogo comum entre os setores industrial e comercial e os esforços para o atendimento de suas demandas e criação de canais de interferência junto ao governo, por meio da análise da trajetória do empresário João Daudt d’Oliveira. Nesse sentido, o empresário do setor farmacêutico possui ampla trajetória como representante do empresariado. Amigo íntimo e colega de faculdade de Getúlio Vargas, ingressou na direção da Associação Comercial do Rio de Janeiro (ACRJ) em 1930 e dois anos depois, foi um dos fundadores do Partido Economista do Brasil, agremiação política que tinha como objetivo a formulação de uma plataforma comum aos interesses das chamadas classes produtoras. Na década de 1940, ocupou o Conselho Nacional do Trabalho (CNT), o Conselho Nacional do Petróleo e o Conselho Fiscal do Banco do Brasil. Presidiu, em 1944, a seção brasileira do Conselho Interamericano de Comércio e Produção (CICYP), e participou de forma expressiva da Internacional Business Conferece, em Rye, nos Estados Unidos (1944), representando os países em desenvolvimento, defendendo a tese da função social do capital, em que a empresa privada é apresentada como possível instrumento de paz social. Articulou de forma expressiva a organização do primeiro Congresso Brasileiro de Economia (1943) e as Conferências das Classes Produtoras de Teresópolis (1945) e Araxá (1949). Foi ainda um dos idealizadores da Carta da Paz Social, juntamente com Roberto Simonsen, presidente da Federação das Indústrias de São Paulo. O documento sistematizava uma série de formulações no sentido da atuação do empresariado em projetos de bem-estar social via iniciativa privada, que culminaram na criação dos serviços sociais da indústria e do comércio (SESI e Sesc, respectivamente). Considerando os elementos que lhe conferiram legitimidade para ser reconhecido como porta-voz das classes produtoras em diferentes momentos e por meio da análise de sua trajetória, de sua inserção em diferentes redes, que incluíam desde de grupos políticos, empresários e intelectuais, foi possível identificar estratégias de atuação do empresariado brasileiro no sentido de obter a representação de seus interesses. Tais estratégias incluíram desde a atuação política – via partido político – como a participação em canais estratégicos de acesso ao governo no período analisado.
This thesis analyzes aspects of the performance of Brazilian business leaders between 1930 and 1951 in search of a common dialogue between the industrial and commercial sectors and the efforts to meet their demands and create channels of interference with the government through analysis of the trajectory of João Daudt d'Oliveira. Daudt had a pharmaceutical laboratory and developed a long career as a representative of the business community. He was friends with Getúlio Vargas. They were colleagues at the Faculty of Law of Porto Alegre. He was elected director of the Commercial Association of Rio de Janeiro (ACRJ) in 1930 and two years later, he was one of the founders of the Brazilian Economist Party, a political association whose objective was to formulate a platform common to the interests of the "producing classes" . In the 1940s, Daudt was invited to be a member of the National Labor Council (CNT), as well as other councils - the National Petroleum Council and the Fiscal Council of Banco do Brasil. He organized and coordinated the Brazilian section of the Inter-American Trade and Production Council (CICYP) in 1944, and participated expressively at the International Business Conference in Rye, United States (1944), representing developing countries, advocating thesis of the social function of capital, in which private enterprise is presented as a possible instrument of social peace. Daudt was one of the most active organizers of the first Brazilian Congress of Economics (1943) and the Conferences of the Producing Classes of Teresópolis (1945) and Araxá (1949). He was also one of the founders of the "Carta da Paz Social", along with Roberto Simonsen, president of the Federation of Industries of São Paulo. The document systematized a series of formulations for entrepreneurship in social welfare projects through private initiative, which culminated in the creation of social services of the industry and commerce (SESI and Sesc, respectively). Considering the elements that gave it the legitimacy to be recognized as spokesperson for the producing classes at different times and through the analysis of its trajectory, its insertion in different networks, which included from political groups, entrepreneurs and intellectuals, it was possible to identify strategies of the Brazilian business community in order to obtain representation of their interests. These strategies included political participation - via political party - such as participation in strategic channels of access to government in the period analyzed.

Tačiau turint omenyje tai, jog nusikalstamų veikų daugetas ne retai suprantamas skirtingai, o nuo jo priklauso formų išskyrimas, šiame darbe pirmiausia siekiama apibrėžti daugeto sampratą, parodyti jog daugetas nėra vien tik situacijos, kai asmuo padaro kelias nusikalstamas. Siekiant įvertinti daugeto formų įtaką bausmės skyrimui, pirmiausia apžvelgiamos įvairios daugeto teorijos pateikiamos įvairiuose doktrinos šaltiniuose ir pagrindžiamas idealiosios ir realiosio sutapties kaip daugeto formų išskyrimas tiek teorijoje, tiek galiojančiame Lietuvos Respublikos baudžiamajame kodekse. Nors pavienė nusikalstama veika yra nusikalstamų veikų daugeto komponentas, kai kurios pavienės veikos išoriškai yra panašios į daugetą. Dėl to siekiant aiškiai apsibrėžti daugeto formas, šiame darbe pateikiami pavienių tęstinių, trunkamųjų ir sudėtinių nusikalstamų veikų skirtumai nuo jų daugeto, taip pat atskleidžiami jų charakteringi bruožai. Atlikus išsamią šio instituto analizę, darbe plačiai vertinama jo įtaka bausmės skyrimui. This thesis provides a detailed analysis of existing forms of multiple criminal acts and their significance the sentencing. Having in mind that the institute of multiple criminal acts is often interpreted in various different ways this work attempts to define this institute as much more complex than a situation when a person commits more than one criminal act. The definition has a major influence in the understanding of different forms of multiple criminal acts, therefore, in order to comprehend the influence of multiple criminal acts to sentencing various theories of multiple criminal acts are discussed in this work. In this discussion the author presents the forms of multiple criminal acts not only from various doctrinal sources but also from the penal code of the Republic of Lithuania. Even though an individual criminal act is a constitutive part of multiple criminal acts, some individual criminal acts are similar to multiple criminal acts. For this reason, in order to define the two forms of multiple criminal acts, the author attempts to provide a solid analysis of those single criminal acts which have similar features to the forms of multiple criminal acts. After this analysis the work depicts a full picture of the influence of the forms’ of multiple acts significance to sentencing according to both the penal code of the Republic of Lithuania and foreign systems of sentencing. Nors Lietuvos bankininkystės praktikoje ši kreditavimo sutartis nėra naujas reiškinys, Lietuvos teisės doktrinoje sindikuotas kreditavimas ir su juo susijusios teorinės ir praktinės problemos yra praktiškai nenagrinėtos, o teisminių ginčų šioje srityje kol kas nėra. World economic turmoil, which has started after a collapse of Lehman Brothers, a bank of United States of America, had emphasized the importance of effective bank’s credit portfolio risk management and this in turn determined a stricter regulation of banking sector. Therefore, it is supposed that in Lithuania, due to the latter conditions, a frequency of lending by using the form of a syndicate lending agreement will increase. Though in Lithuanian banking practice the syndicate lending is not a phenomenon, in Lithuanian law doctrine there were almost no analysis regarding syndicated lending and theoretical and practical issues related thereto, moreover, there are no precedent cases in this field. Therefore, the objective of these master theses is to analyze practical and theoretical issues of syndicate lending process, which raise most disputes in international practice, also to assess these questions in the context of Lithuanian law system. Abstract:
Many Gopher Tortoise populations are in steep decline throughout Florida, and various measures have been attempted to curb the trend. One such measure is to relocate tortoises to protected recipient sites on private lands. The majority of private lands in Florida are used for cattle, however, production and the effect of cattle production on tortoises is not known. Here, I tested six parameters of tortoise behavior by monitoring 1403 gopher tortoises released at the Barthle Brothers Ranch, Pasco County Florida, between August 2009 and December 2012. The parameters tested were (1) burrow density, (2) burrow spacing, (3) burrow relocation, (4) body condition, (5) individual growth rate, and (6) recruitment (addition of young to the population). I used telemetry techniques to observe movement and burrow placement as it related to cattle activity and burrow impacts, and collected morphological data to determine changes in body condition and growth. I used burrow surveys and analyzed movement patterns to interpret the propensity for tortoises to place burrows where cattle may or may not congregate. Lastly, I investigated recruitment of juveniles into the population and followed the mortality of resident and relocated tortoises in all treatment plots. I found that burrow density, distance moved when relocating to new burrows, and avoidance of cattle were not distinguishably different within or between the plots. Burrow relocation, however, was more frequent outside the exclosures. The change in body condition did not differ between males and female or resident and relocated individuals. Females within the exclosure did not grow at a rate different than those outside the exclosure although translocated females grew faster than resident females. Densities of non-adult burrows inside the exclosures were not different then densities outside the exclosure. Eleven percent of tortoises relocated to the ranch died during the project. Although we have no evidence that cattle and tortoise cannot successfully coexist, a number of circumstances prevented rigorous testing of our hypotheses, predominately the failure of the silt fence used to enclose the treatment plots. Using a trespass-proof perimeter fence would allow a better assessment of the actual interaction between the cattle and tortoises and may shed new light on the lack of recruitment and the decline of juvenile tortoises relocated to the ranch. Without recruitment of individuals back into a population, or the persistent of reproducing adults within the population, any efforts to curb the downward trend in gopher tortoise numbers by relocating tortoises to actively grazed pasture is futile.

Schizosaccharomyces pombe est devenu un important système modèle pour étudier les processus physiologiques, biochimiques et génétiques chez l'homme. Ces travaux appartiennent à un projet sur la façon dont la fonction altérée de l'appareil de Golgi contribue à des maladies comme le cancer ou cause des anormalités génétiques. La protéine HID-1 de C. elegans et des humains est une protéine de l'appareil de Golgi qui appartient à la superfamille de protéines DYMECLIN. Les animaux ont à la fois un gène HID1 et un gène DYM. Chez les humains, une expression réduite de HID1 est impliquée dans la prolifération de tumeurs. La perte de DYM chez les humains mène à une déformation squelettique. S. pombe a trois gènes orthologues HID-1, mais pas de DYM. Par contraste, de nombreux eucaryotes unicellulaires et pluricellulaires n'ont qu'un gène DYM. Les mutants de S. pombe sans Hid1 et Hid3 étaient sensibles au stress oxydatif et la croissance de hid3Δ a été stoppée dans des milieux de culture minimum standard. L'insensibilité de hid3Δ au brefeldin A, mais sa sensibilité au golgicide A démontrent que Hid3 fonctionne dans le transport antérograde à travers l'appareil de Golgi. Afin d'explorer des rapports indiquant que le renouvellement des protéines pourrait être modifié dans hid3Δ, j'ai entrepris une étude de protéomique à la quantification label-free. La régulation positive de la voie de signalisation MAPK de tension a démontré que les cellules étaient dans un état de tension dans des conditions normales de croissance. Schizosaccharomyces pombe has become an important model system to study physiological, biochemical and genetic processes in humans. This work is part of a continuing project to study how altered Golgi function contributes to diseases, such as cancer, or causes of genetic abnormalities. The HID-1 protein of C. elegans and humans are peripheral membrane proteins of the Golgi apparatus and are part of the DYMECLIN superfamily of proteins. Animals have both a HID1 and a DYM gene. In C. elegans, HID-1 maintains normal cellular growth and in humans reduced expression of HID1 has been implicated in tumour proliferation. Loss of DYM in humans leads to skeletal deformation and potentially mental retardation. S. pombe has three HID-1 orthologues, but no DYM. In contrast, many unicellular and multicellular eukaryotes have only DYM. S. pombe mutants lacking Hid1 and Hid3 were sensitive to oxidative stress and growth of hid3Δ was stopped in standard minimal media. Insensitivity of hid3Δ to brefeldin A but sensitivity to golgicide A demonstrated that Hid3 operates in anterograde protein transport through the Golgi. In order to investigate reports that protein turnover might be altered in hid3Δ, I undertook a proteomics study using label-free protein quantification. Up-regulation of the MAPK stress signalling pathway demonstrated that cells were under a state of stress under standard growth conditions. In addition, protein components of Ras signalling, microtubule dynamics and chromatin remodelling were altered potentially affecting a wide variety of processes from cell cycle regulation to metabolism

Schizosaccharomyces pombe devient de plus en plus un système modèle pour étudier la régulation de l'expression des gènes et des protéines dans les processus impliqués dans le développement de cancers et de maladies génétiques. Ces travaux peuvent servir à étudier les propriétés putatives de la protéine humaine HID1 à empêcher des tumeurs de se former. J'ai utilisé la technique RNAseq pour révéler les changements d'expression des gènes sur les cellules de S. pombe dont sont absentes trois gènes orthologues du gène humain HID1: hid1+, hid2+ et hid3+. Des mutants ont été créés par remplacement de gènes et testés pour découvrir leurs propriétés de croissance. La croissance du mutant hid2Δ semblait meilleure tandis que celle de hid3Δ semblait plus lente que les contrôles. La morphologie cellulaire de chaque mutant était normale. La microscopie à transmission électronique a révélé que l'appareil de Golgi était fortement modifié dans hid3Δ. RNAseq a montré que plus de 500 gènes étaient exprimés différentiellement dans hid3Δ. Les changements d'expression indiquaient des cellules sous tension. Par ailleurs, un jeu défini de facteurs de transcription et un groupe de gènes encodant des protéines situées et sécrétées ont été introduits, ce qui suggère que la perturbation de la fonction protéique au niveau de la membrane plasmique a un effet feedback sur la régulation de l'expression des gènes. J'émets l'hypothèse que la croissance lente de hid3Δ s'explique par un état cellulaire de quiescence partielle. Aussi, S. pombe ont été séquencées et révèlent l'expression de petits ARN non codants spécifiques, dont des introns complets et d'autres ARN non codants non annotés
Schizosaccharomyces pombe has become increasingly a model system to study the regulation of gene expression, stress signaling and metabolic and protein changes for processes implicated in the development of cancer and genetic diseases. This work was started to determine if S. pombe could be used to study the putative anti-tumor forming properties of the human HID1 protein. I employed the NGS technology RNAseq to reveal gene expression changes to the cells of S. pombe lacking three orthologues of the human HID1 gene, hid1+, hid2+ and hid3+. Mutants lacking these genes were created by gene replacement and tested for growth properties. The mutant hid2Δ appeared to grow better and hid3Δ grew more slowly than WT controls. The cell morphology of each mutant was normal and lengths and widths were unchanged. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that the Golgi apparatus was greatly modified in hid3Δ but not in other genotypes. RNAseq showed that under standard growth conditions more than 500 genes were differentially expressed in hid3Δ. Expression changes were indicative of cells under stress. Also, a defined set of transcription factors and a group of genes encoding proteins located in the plasma membrane and secreted were induced, suggesting that disruption of protein function at the plasma membrane feeds back to regulate gene expression. I hypothesize that slow growth of hid3Δ is due to a partial quiescent cell state. To start investigating mechanisms regulating gene expression, small RNA libraries of the size of S. pombe introns were sequenced and revealed the expression of specific small non-coding RNAs, including full introns and other un-annotated non-coding RNAs

Esta dissertação analisa a trajetória política de Yêddo Daudt Fiúza, candidato lançado pelo Partido Comunista Brasileiro à Presidência da República no ano de 1945. Seu objetivo é compreender, por meio da análise da trajetória de Fiúza e levando em conta as redes nas quais se inseriu, como o engenheiro, figura ligada ao expresidente Getúlio Vargas, aproximou-se do partido e foi o primeiro candidato à Presidência lançado pelo PCB. A primeira parte dessa pesquisa analisa as relações familiares de Fiúza e os laços de amizade estabelecidos pelo lado materno de sua família ainda no Rio Grande do Sul, onde o engenheiro nasceu e realizou seus estudos da Escola de Engenharia de Porto Alegre. Também analisa a atuação de Fiúza enquanto engenheiro civil e as implicações de um discurso de valorização de uma elite técnica para atuar na administração pública brasileira, difundido entre as décadas de 1920 e 1950. A segunda parte do trabalho aborda a trajetória política de Fiúza como interventor no município de Petrópolis, onde governou de 1930 a 1934. A terceira parte do trabalho analisa o período em que Fiúza se articula com oligarcas fluminenses e foi eleito prefeito de Petrópolis no período constitucional do primeiro governo Vargas. Por fim, a última parte do trabalho aborda a campanha política de 1945 e a candidatura de Yêddo Fiúza lançada pelo PCB.
This dissertation proposes to analyze the political career of Yêddo Daudt Fiuza, Brazilian Communist Party candidate for president in 1945. The objective of this research is to understand, by analyzing the trajectory of Fiuza and taking into account the networks in which he inserted, how this engineer, figure linked to former President Getulio Vargas, approached the party and was the first presidential candidate released by the PCB, person who was part of the circle of friends of former President Getulio Vargas, became a member of the party and was the first presidential candidate released by the PCB. The first part of this research analyzes the Fiuza family relationships and friendships established by the maternal side of his family still in Rio Grande do Sul, where the engineer was born and did his studies at the School of Engineering of Porto Alegre. It also examines the work of Fiuza as a civil engineer and the implications of a discourse of recovery and the rise of a technical elite public administration in Brazil between 1920 and 1940. The second part of the work discusses the political career of Fiuza as intervenor in the city of Petropolis, where he ruled from 1930 to 1934. The third part of the study examines the period in which Fiuza has been linked to the old political oligarchies of Rio de Janeiro and was elected mayor of Petrópolis in the constitutional period of the first Vargas government. Finally, the last part of the dissertation analyzes the political campaign of 1945 and the candidacy of Yêddo Fiúza launched by the PCB.

Abstract:
Under unfavorable environmental conditions Caenorhabditis elegans larvae enter a dauer stage which is a specialized non-feeding larval stage. In the dauer stage, worms display astonishingly low metabolism, which allows them to adapt themselves to environmental stress and to dwell without food for several months. Dauer larvae can enter into the reproductive larval stage, when environmental conditions become favorable. In this study, the metabolic transition of dauers into the reproductive larval stage is analyzed in detail: a. During the exit of dauers, several metabolic traits were examined. Primarily, dauer larva initiates the metabolic transition by activating feeding, which is followed by upregulated oxygen consumption and mitochondrial remodeling, as well as enhanced protein synthesis. b. To better understand the metabolic transition, inhibitors of the dauer exit were introduced. Lithium ions were shown to inhibit the transition of dauers to reproductive larvae and prevent the upregulation of metabolic activities required for this process. c. In liquid culture, the transition from the dauer to the reproductive larva is also inhibited, presumably because of the hypoxic character of the liquid culture. Thus, hypoxia has a negative effect on the metabolic transition. d. In the course of our investigation we discovered that the dauer larva is not a closed system but indeed, it can dwell on the externally available ethanol as a carbon source by incorporating it into the energy metabolism. This allows dauers to survive for longer periods in the absence of bacteria, the preferred food of worms. These findings clarify the nature of dauers, how they utilize distinct pathways during the metabolic transition and how they take advantage of the externally available carbon source. These results may in the future enable us to elucidate the complex pathways of metabolism, as well as the ways in which it can be regulated.

O gênero Lachesis Daudin, 1803 foi dividido em seis populações para se avaliar o status taxonômico e as relações filogenéticas entre os táxons envolvidos. Foram usados caracteres relativos à morfologia externa e hemipênis. As espécies centroamericanas L. melanocephala e L. stenophrys são reconhecidas como espécies distintas e tiveram seu status taxonômico mantido. A espécie sulamericana L. muta é reconhecida como monotípica, sem a divisão em subespécies, baseado nos resultados obtidos através da análise filogenética e estatística. Tais resultados confirmam uma independência das linhagens da América Central em relação à América do Sul e são congruentes com outros estudos que utilizaram dados moleculares para inferir as relações filogenéticas dentro de Lachesis.
The genus Lachesis Daudin, 1803 was split-up in six populations in order to evaluate the taxonomic status and the phylogenetic relationships among such taxa. Characters of external morphology and hemipenis were used. The Central American species L. melanocephala and L. stenophrys are recognized as distinct species and had your taxonomic status maintained. The South American species L. muta is recognized as monotypic, without further differentiation in subspecies, based on the results obtained through the phylogenetic and statistical analysis. Such results confirm the independence of the Central American lineages in relation to the South American and are congruent with other studies based on molecular data to infer phylogenetic relationships in Lachesis.

Abstract:
Xenopus laevis injected with sheep erythrocytes (SRBC) at Stage 48 of Nieuwkoop and Faber (1967) showed no evidence of tolerance induction as a result of early exposure to antigen. These experiments showed that priming during the larval stages of development (at Stages 48 and 54 or at Stage 56) led to a positive anamnestic response when the animals were challenged after metamorphosis as toadlets. It was not, however, possible to demonstrate enhanced secondary responses within the larval period itself. The effect of the alkylating agent, cyclophosphamide on the generation of immunological memory varies at different stages of development. In the larva, positive memory cells generated at the time of priming may be the population most affected by the drug, whereas in adults the evidence suggests that suppressor cells may have been eliminated by the cyclophosphamide treatment. Cyclophosphamide had no tolerogenic effect when administered with a primary injection of SRBC even at larval Stage 48. It is concluded that, although transplantation tolerance to allografts has been demonstrated in Xenopus laevis, these free-living larvae are not vulnerable to tolerance induction by xenogeneic antigens. On the contrary, both HGG (human gamma globulin) and SRBC induce positive anamnesis in the larva which can be expressed post-metamorphosis. Tolerance was only observed in the present experiments to soluble antigen (HGG) injected in high doses, such as could induce tolerance in the adult as well as in tadpoles. In contrast to their ability to react to xenogeneic antigens with the induction of positive memory, larvae injected with live allogeneic cells (adult blood leucocytes) failed to produce any anamnestic response when challenged as toadlets. These cells, injected by various routes into larvae from Stage 47 to Stage 57 induced neither tolerance nor positive memory. The recipients responded in a primary manner both in mixed leucocyte reactions and to skin grafts.

Haptic devices are becoming a common and significant tool in the perspective of robotic neurorehabilitation for motor learning, particularly in post-stroke patients. As a standard approach, this kind of devices are used in a local environment, where the patient interacts with a virtual environment recreated in the computer's screen. In this sense, a general framework for virtual reality based rehabilitation was developed. All the features of the framework, such as the control loop and the external communication, as well as the haptic and graphic rendering, were implemented inside Matlab/Simulink using Handshake proSENSE toolbox, guaranteeing a real-time system. As an example, a five-bar linkage haptic device with two active degrees-of-freedom (DOF) was designed and integrated within the proposed framework, as well as a device for grasping operations. An extension of this standard approach is verified when the therapist is allowed to feel and interact remotely and in real time with the patient. We applied the proposed concept to a single degree-of-freedom master/slave system. One hand orthosis was used as a master device at the therapist's side, while the other was applied to the patient's hand, and used as a slave device. In order to achieve this issue, we proposed two bilateral control systems in order to guarantee an stable interaction between the master and the slave, even in case of variable network conditions (i.e. Internet). By using the master device, the therapist can remotely move the patient's hand and, at the same time, perceive the patient's resistance to the motion, allowing the assessment of important parameters, such as the residual level of spasticity. In this way, it can be remotely assessed the conditions of the patient and consequently can be proposed a proper rehabilitation program.

The goal of this paper is to outline the legal and scientific implications of the admissibility standard defined in Daubert v. Merrel Row Pharmeceuticals, Inc., 509 U.S. 579 (1993). The evolution of scientific admissibility is discussed. In addition, the author looks at criticisms of Daubert from the legal and psychological literature. Empirical data is presented with respect to judges’ abilities to act as “gate keepers” and jurors’ sensitivity to expert testimony. The author concludes with a discussion of the limitations and implications of this research.
