Abstract:
This thesis is a meditation on liberatory futures for colonized pasts. It begins with a history of the imperial relationship between the US and the Philippines and how coloniality took root in the lives of Filipinos. The second chapter explores the critique of imperialism offered in post/colonial cultural productions by Manuel Ocampo and his location within the museum, as a constitutive site of modernity. The third chapter explores the project of de-coloniality and the role of ritual and imagination.

Abstract:
Abstract:
Contemporary economic and financial crisis is closely associated with social innovation. This process profoundly influences cyberspace's phenomena within our globalized communications paradigm. The correspondent debate on the articulation of crisis and innovation was reconceptualized by Marx, Nietzsche, Sombart, Schumpeter, David Harvey, etc. However, Manuel Castells elaborated an economic but also communicational explanation, which seems to us closer to the current crisis. Castells uses the notion of “space of flows” created and shared by globalized capitalism, across information and communication networks at cyberspace. The aim of this chapter is to reflect on “information and knowledge flows” in the present crisis conjuncture. For example, within Facebook content privacy is being debated and even engenders reluctance on user fidelity. In fact, social networks shouldn't deliver just information flows but also knowledge flows, which may become central means of production/consumption.

Abstract:
Cityspace has been the topic of urban and cultural studies for at least two decades and has opened a variety of ways to approach the city, from historical and cultural perspectives to socio-geographical, economic, religious, literary, postmodernist, post-colonial and, more recently, geo-critical ones. The article looks at the European and American city from the 1970s to the present through the lenses offered by the theoretical approaches by Edward Soja, David Harvey, Michel Foucault, Frederick Jameson, Bertrand Westphal, Manuel Castells, among others, while highlighting the specific characteristics of cityspace and citizenship, the use and misuse of living and imagined spaces in the period mentioned above. The shift from the modern city to the postmodern metropolis and global megalopolis has entailed essential changes in the views on cityspace both from the architectural perspective and from the city dweller’s perception of space in the city. How these changes have affected our lives and what the city of the future will look like are two core questions this article attempts to answer.

Abstract:
Military diving operations are routinely conducted in what can be one of the most inhospitable environments on the planet, frequently characterized by zero visibility. The inability to clearly see the immediate operational environment has historically been a serious limitation to manned diving operations — whether the mission is ship husbandry, under water construction, salvage, or scientific research. U.S. Navy diving is an integral part of the nation’s defense strategy with a continuing requirement to conduct manned intervention in the water column. To ensure technical superiority across the entire spectrum of diving operations we must identify, exploit, and de velop technology to advance the state-of-the-art in diving equipment. This can only be achieved by investing in, and supporting, focused research and development with specific goals to further diving capabilities. Under a project sponsored by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) and Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), the Naval Surface Warfare Center-Panama City Division (NSWC PCD) has de veloped a prototype see-through head-up display system for a U. S. Navy diving helmet — the Divers Augmented Vision Display (DAVD). The DAVD system uses waveguide optical display modules that couple images from a micro display into a waveguide optic, translate the images through a series of internal reflections, finally exiting toward the diver’s eye providing a magnified, see-through virtual image at a specific distance in front of the diver. The virtual images can be critical information and sensor data including sonar images, ship husbandry and underwater construction schematics, enhanced navigation displays, augmented reality, and text messages. NSWC PCD is the U.S. Navy’s leading laboratory for research, development, testing, evaluation, and technology transition of diver visual display systems; with unique facilities for rapid prototyping and manufacturing, human systems integration and extreme environment testing. Along with NSWC PCD, the Navy Experimental Diving Unit (NEDU), and Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center (NDSTC) are co-located tenant commands at the Naval Support Activity Panama City (NSA PC). This paper provides a brief background on the development of diver head-up display systems, waveguide optical display technology, development of the DAVD prototype, results of diver evaluations, and recommendations for accelerated development of this game changing capability.

Turley, Curtis, Maria Alessandra Montironi, and Harry H. Cheng. "Programming Arduino Boards With the C/C++ Interpreter Ch." In ASME 2015 International Design Engineering Technical Conferences and Computers and Information in Engineering Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/detc2015-47837.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper presents the ChArduino package which is designed to control the Atmel AVR microcontroller based Arduino boards through the C/C++ interpreter Ch. Traditionally, Arduino boards are programmed using the official Arduino IDE or lower-level AVR C libraries. These methods require specific cross-compilation tools to compile the code and upload it onto the board. Whenever a change is made to the source code, it needs to be recompiled and uploaded, making application development cumbersome, especially for beginners and as the size of the application grows. The approach presented in this paper is aimed at reducing the effort associated with code compilation, especially in classroom environments where microcontroller programming is first introduced. In fact, when using this method, code is executed in an interpreted manner and every function call is processed separately by the interpreter, thus compilation and uploading are not required to make changes effective. The ChArduino package consists of a library of functions running on a computer and a specialized firmware loaded onto the Arduino board. The firmware on the Arduino board is pre-compiled and the latest version is automatically uploaded at run time, if not already. At power-up, the firmware initializes the board and then waits for a command from the computer. The use of the C/C++ interpreter Ch also makes available line-by-line debugging, numerical analysis, and plotting capabilities. The supported communication protocols between the Arduino board and the computer are serial and Bluetooth. The application code written using this package is completely compatible with the entire spectrum of Arduino boards and can be ported to the Arduino IDE with minimal changes. The applications of the method described in this paper are general but apply especially to the K-12 education field in that the package creates a simple, user-friendly, environment for the absolute beginner to learn the basic principles of mechatronic systems including programming, microcontrollers, and electrical circuits. Lesson plans are being developed to use the ChArduino package in microcontroller introductory courses and the package is currently being introduced for preliminary testing in schools through the UC Davis C-STEM Center.

Kar, Apurba, and Sandip Patil. "A Modified Structural Arrangement of Rigs for Safe Launching of Life Boats and Berthing of OSVs." In ASME 2011 30th International Conference on Ocean, Offshore and Arctic Engineering. ASMEDC, 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/omae2011-49713.

Full text
Abstract:
It has long been experienced that Launching of lifeboat from rigs and Positioning of offshore supply vessel (OSV) near rigs are very critical and vulnerable operations as regards to the safety. In present days, sophisticated & expensive Dynamic Positioning (DP) Systems are used in order to avoid the collision of OSVs with rigs. However, it is observed that despite the provision of such sophisticated means, accidents are still occurring. Loss of control during positioning of OSVs can lead to severe accident (e.g. collision of OSV Samudra Shakti with Mumbai High North (MHN) platform in 2005). To avoid such accidents, considerable gap needs to be maintained between the OSV and the rig position. Also launching of lifeboat is known to be another safety critical operation. Particularly in rough weather, the landing of lifeboat requires to be at least 20 to 30m away from the platform. This is essential for preventing the lifeboat to drift under the platform and colliding with the structure & piping system there at. Lifeboat launching by davit lowering or freefall have got their own traditional problems as widely known in shipping industry. These are described in the paper “Safety of Lifeboat launching - Some Possible Improvements {P19J_AB27}” presented at Design for Safety Conference-2010 held in Italy. Considering both the issues as described above, it is evident that maintaining adequate distance from the rig is a crucial factor for improving safety of Life Boat launching and positioning of OSVs alongside the rigs. In order to achieve this, an additional structural part of the rig is proposed in this paper. This new structural entity is to be in the form of an inclined truss which will act as launching skid for the lifeboat. This arrangement will provide a guided slipway to enable landing of lifeboat at a considerable distance from the rig. Also this structure will be configured suitably to enable berthing & mooring of supply vessels alongside the rig. In this arrangement the DP system will be required for a short time only, at the initial stage of placing the vessel. After having the vessel positioned, she can be moored with the new proposed truss structure. Thus the dependency of DP System will reduce significantly to avoid collisions. So the authors believe that the proposed arrangement will improve the safety of offshore operation in a significant manner.

Abstract:
A rabbit polyclonal antibody which was monospecific for thromboplastin (TP) apoprotein from human brain according to a number of criteria was used to screen two human placenta cDNA libraries in the expression vector Agtll, one randomly primed and one oligo-dT primed, by the method of Young and Davis. 23 positive clones expressing TP related antigen were isolated and plaque purified. DNA from the different clones was isolated and the TPcDNA inserts released by EcoRl digestion. The inserts could be classified into11 size classes ranging from approx. 300-1100 base pairs. The largest insert (1100 bp) was subcloned intothe plasmid vector pGEM-1. When the nick-translated plasmid (pTP4-l) was used as a probe to screen the phage clones by slot blot hybridization all the 23clones hybridized to the 1100 bp insert. A XgtllTP4 lysogen expressed B-galactosidase- TP4 fusion peptide upon IPTG induction as shown by immunobinging studied using two different antibodies to TP apoprotein: the rabbit antibody originally used to screen the libraries and an antibody raised in goat against human brain TP purified by affinity chromatography on a Factor Vll-antiVII-agarose column.Cytokines mediate many of the cellular interactions in the inflammatory and immune response systems and have a variety of actions. We have investigated the effect of rIL-1a/$,rIL-2, rlFNa/y and rTNFa on thromboplastin synthesis (TPL) in monocytes (M) and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC). Recombinant IL- 1a and IL-16 both induced a dose dependent increase in TPL activity of monocyte (8-fold) and HUVEC cultures (15-fold) at 6h. The increase levelled off at interleukinconcentrations of 50-100u/ml. Recombinant IL-2 at 50u/ml induced a 5-fold rise in monocytes TPL. The effect of rIL-2 on HUVEC TPL synthesis at 6 h was smaller than on monocytes but still clearly significant at dose dependent. Recombinant IFN-Y (10 -10 u/ml) increased.TPL activity in HUVEC at 6h and 16 h in adose dependent manner, whereas no effect of rIFN-Y and IFN-a (1-10 u/ml) on M TPL was seen. When LPS (5pg/ml) was used to induce TPL synthesis, additional stimulation with rIFN-Y further enhanced HUVEC TPL activity, but decreased M TPL activity. Recombinant IFNa also decreased LPS induced TPL synthesis in M andhad no effect on HUVEC TPL. Recombinant TNFa (0.3x104u/ml) increased HUVEC TPL 7-fold at 6h. There wasno effect on M TPL synthesis. No endotoxin was detected in any of these preparations. CONCLUSIONS: Some biological response modifiers induced thromboplastin synthesis in monocytes (IL-ia, IL-13, IL-2) and in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (IL-ia, IL-18, IL-2, TNFa and IFNY). Some had no direct effect on TPL synthesis but inhibited the response to monocytes to other thromboplastin-inducing agents like LPS (IFNa and IFNY).

Abstract:
The increasing advance of the new technologies applied in the retail market, make it common to sell products without the personal contact between seller and buyer, being the registration and payment of the products made in electronic equipment of self-checkout. The large-scale use of these devices forces the consumer to participate in the service process, which was previously done through interaction with the company's employees. The user of the self-checkout system thus performs all the steps of the purchase, from weighing the products, registering them and making the payment. This is seen as a partial employee, whose participation or performance in providing services can be used by the company to improve the quality of its operations (KELLEY, et al 1993). However this participation does not always satisfy the user, and may cause negative experiences related to usability failures. This article presents the results of the evaluation by the users of the self-checkout system. The data were collected in Portugal through a questionnaire to 400 users. The study analyzes the degree of satisfaction regarding the quality and usability of the system, the degree of motivation for its adoption, as well as the profile of the users. Analysis of the sample data reveals that users have basic or higher education and use new technologies very often. They also have a high domain of the system and an easy learning of its use. The reason for using self-checkout instead of the traditional checkout is mainly due to "queues at checkout with operator" and "at the small volume of products". In general, the sample reveals a high degree of satisfaction with the service and with quality, however, in comparative terms, self-checkout is not considered better than operator checkout. The evaluation of the interaction with the self-checkout was classified according to twenty-six attributes of the system. The analysis identifies five groups with similar characteristics, of which two have low scores. "Cancellation of registered articles", "search for articles without a bar code", "manual registration", "bagging area", "error messages", "weight sensor" and “invoice request "are seven critical attributes of the system. The results indicate that the usability analysis oriented to the self-checkout service can be determinant for the user-system interaction. The implications of empirical findings are discussed together with guidelines for future research. Keywords: Interaction Design, Self service, Self-checkout, User evaluation, UsabilityReferencias ABRAHÃO, J., et al (2013).
