Abstract:
The Rottenstone Domain at Davin Lake northern Saskatchewan, exhibits structural and granite-emplacement evidence for crustal thickening, and possible Himalayan-style extrusion, overprinted by transpressional strain increasing toward the contact with the Wathaman Batholith. Three discrete Rottenstone subdomains parallel the regional strike of the Trans-Hudson Orogen: (i) the southeast Rottenstone subdomain (SERSD) with gently northwest-dipping migmatitic straight gneiss (S1) and white granitoid rocks with pinch-and-swell structures parallel to the straight gneissosity; (ii) the central Rottenstone subdomain (CRSD), which partly preserves the same NW-dipping fabric (S1) but is overprinted at its margins by tight upright F2 folds and includes a stockwork of pink monzogranitic aplites and pegmatites; and (iii) the northwest Rottenstone subdomain (NWRSD) in which the F2 folds are generally tighter and penetrative and its network of narrow white granitoid rocks is deformed and transposed by the F2 folds; but in the northwestern part, a wide, syn-D2 complex of schlieric white tonalitic and diatexite sheets strikes parallel the orogen. The SERSD D1 straight zone may be a remnant of Himalayan-type extrusion zone although it could be the lowest member of a stack of ductile thrust sheets. The CRSD stockwork may represent fluid-assisted magma injection into extensional fractures above the postulated extrusion zone. The increasing transpressional strain northwestward expressed primarily by the F2 folds in CRSD and NWRSD defines the Davin Lake shear zone, into which the NWRSD granitoid dyke complex represents syntectonic magma injection. Both the postulated extrusion and transpression are related to oblique convergence of the Archean Sask craton with the Archean Rae–Hearne craton.

Bosch, Hermann David. "Understanding the levels of central bank independence in the SADC and their impact on policy descision making / Hermann Davin Bosch." Thesis, North West University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/13572.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this study was to understand the influence of Central Bank Independence on policy decision making in the SADC. The study made use of an interpretivistic research paradigm and followed a mixed method approach using an interpretative- Quantitative methodology. A literature review based on books, articles, previous research projects and the internet was done in order to gain a better understanding of central bank independence. Secondly the various central bank acts of the SADC member countries were studied in order to determine the level of independence that each central Bank have. It was found that most of the SADC Central banks do not have a high degree of independence. Various indexes were used to quantify the levels of independence among the various central banks. Substantial differences exist in the level of independence among the various central banks. This makes the feasibility of successful monetary policy convergence within the SADC very unlikely. Any monetary convergence would have to include a unified legal framework within which monetary policy will be executed. The ultimate aim of monetary convergence is a single currency and a single central bank. In order for the process of monetary policy convergence to move forward within the SADC reforms to the current central bank legislation will have to be undertaken. Legislation will have to ensure central bank independence within member countries. It is suggested that central bank independence also be entrenched in the constitutions of the various countries.

Cattermole, Grant. "School reports : university fiction in the masculine tradition of New Zealand literature." Thesis, University of Canterbury. English, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/9709.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis will investigate the fictional discourse that has developed around academia and how this discourse has manifested itself in the New Zealand literary tradition, primarily in the works of M.K. Joseph, Dan Davin and James K. Baxter. These three writers have been selected because of their status within Kai Jensen's conception of “a literary tradition of excitement about masculinity”; in other words, the masculine tradition in New Zealand literature which provides fictional representations of factual events and tensions. This literary approach is also utilised in the tradition of British university fiction, in which the behaviour of students and faculty are often deliberately exaggerated in order to provide a representation of campus life that captures the essence of the reality without being wholly factual. The fact that these three writers attempt, consciously or unconsciously, to combine the two traditions is a matter of great literary interest: Joseph's A Pound of Saffron (1962) appropriates tropes of the British university novel while extending them to include concerns specific to New Zealand; Davin's Cliffs of Fall (1945), Not Here, Not Now (1970) and Brides of Price (1972) attempt to blend traditions of university fiction with the masculine realist tradition in New Zealand literature, though, as we will see, with limited success; Baxter's station as the maternal grandson of a noted professor allows him to criticise the elitist New Zealand university system in Horse (1985) from a unique position, for he was more sympathetic towards what he considered the working class “peasant wisdom” of his father, Archie, than the “professorial knowledge” of Archie's father-in-law. These three authors have been chosen also because of the way they explore attitudes towards universities amongst mainstream New Zealand society in their writing, for while most novels in the British tradition demonstrate little tension between those within the university walls and those without, in New Zealand fiction the tension is palpable. The motivations for this tension will also be explored in due course, but before we can grapple with how the tradition of British university fiction has impacted New Zealand literature, we must first examine the tradition itself.

Abstract:
Onboard power electronics provides essential functions to the electric traction. The strong miniaturization of semiconductors implies ever growing heat flux densities. In addition, the reliability of existing cooling systems is still imperfect and justifies the use of a capillary device pumping. This thesis is therefore dedicated to characterization of an innovative capillary pumped cooling loop, tailored to high flux densities and offering greater reliability. Emphasis is placed on the transfer of heat and mass for a fluid phase immersed in porous media and subjected to high heat densities. This experimental study leads to an analysis of data collected through a nodal model coupled to inverse techniques. This is made in order to retrieve the parameters used to associate overheating to corresponding heat flux density and finally analyze the variations depending on the characteristics of the porous medium. The method made it possible to trace concentrations in the range of 100 W. Cm-2 applied to the porous medium. Secondly, a detailed presentation of the loop phase, using this kind of flow, is focused on the originality of the architecture used in relation to the usual two phase loops. Tests are performed by scanning a variety of parameters such as heat density injected to the evaporator or pressure drop generated by the loop. The early developments brought to a behavioral model helps to analyze some transitory and stationary phases, able to transfer up to 5. 5 kW per evaporator

Abstract:
The aim of this work is to adjust the spectral position of the surface plasmon resonance of noble-metal nanoparticles embedded in a dielectric matrix by tailoring their morphology and their spatial organization. We show that when the growth is performed on plane substrates, it is possible to modify the aspect ratio of the particles H/D, and thus their optical response by changing the nature of the matrix. Quantitative structural analyzes carried out by using high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electronic microscopy (HAADF-STEM) imaging reveal that H/D is a decreasing function of the diameter D, independently of the deposited metal amount. In order to understand these effects of the matrix on the structural and optical properties of the particles, various studies (influence of the metal and deposited amount, presence of a buffer layer, influence of the elaboration conditions, covering rate of the particles,. . . ) are presented and numerical simulations of the optical spectra are proposed by integrating the structural parameters from the HAADF analysis in a model of Yamaguchi. A second step consists in using nanostructured sapphire surfaces in order to induce a surface organization of the particles, and thus to involve an anisotropy of their optical properties. We show that according to the geometry used during the deposition (normal incidence, grazing incidence, orientation and angle of incidence of atomic flux), it is possible to select the type of facets on which the growth takes place (shadowing effect), and consequently to elaborate self-organized systems of metal nanoislands constituted of stripes or linear chains of particles, whose optical properties display a light-polarization dependence

Bigler, Amanda M. "Fragmented perspectives : creating empathy through experiments in form and perspective in short fiction." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2017. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/27113.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis addresses a creative writing approach to exploring reader empathy through the critical analysis of writing devices implemented by contemporary American short fiction writers and through creative experimentation through a written collection of short stories. It explores the ways in which writers can implement specific literary devices to potentially affect a reader's emotional reaction to a character or situation. The specified devices in this research have been utilised by contemporary American authors in their short fiction collections, namely Lydia Davis (The Collected Stories of Lydia Davis), George Saunders (Tenth of December), and David Foster Wallace (Brief Interviews with Hideous Men), who have influenced reader empathy in their short stories. Two categories of devices are in focus: narrative perspective and story format. These categories are signified due to contemporary American authors' experimentation with these devices and due to their inclusion in literary theory on reader empathy and fiction, namely Suzanne Keen's theory of narrative empathy. She focuses on the importance of reader empathy (namely, the effects that fiction can have on a reader in reality) and discusses devices that writers have used to possibly evoke these emotions. Keen explores the relationship between a reader and character identification, with a further emphasis on reader empathy and reader altruism in an inter-disciplinary setting, stating that reader empathy may lead to reader altruism; however, little to no research has been conducted on the creative implementation of writing techniques in regards to reader empathy from the perspective of a creative writer. Through creative application, this thesis aims to show the ways in which devices explored by narrative theorists can create the possibility for reader empathy. Therefore, the thesis takes into account first-, second-, and third-person narrative perspectives and question and answer (Q&A), short-short (a.k.a. flash fiction), and segmented formats through literary analysis of contemporary short fiction and through writing experimentation in the form of a short story collection. The thesis aims to explore the creative use of these devices and their linkage to reader reaction by the production of a short fiction collection entitled Fragmented Perceptions: A Collection of Characters. This creative work intends to implement the specified devices researched in order to experiment with perspective and format in relation to a possible empathetic connection of the reader to a character. Finally, by analysing possible effects on reader empathy through devices employed in the creative work, the thesis explores ways in which authors can use narrative perspective and format to discover various ways in which a writer can implement devices to affect reader empathy through short fiction.
