Bosch, Hermann David. "Understanding the levels of central bank independence in the SADC and their impact on policy descision making / Hermann Davin Bosch." Thesis, North West University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/13572.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to understand the influence of Central Bank Independence on policy decision making in the SADC. The study made use of an interpretivistic research paradigm and followed a mixed method approach using an interpretative- Quantitative methodology. A literature review based on books, articles, previous research projects and the internet was done in order to gain a better understanding of central bank independence. Secondly the various central bank acts of the SADC member countries were studied in order to determine the level of independence that each central Bank have. It was found that most of the SADC Central banks do not have a high degree of independence. Various indexes were used to quantify the levels of independence among the various central banks. Substantial differences exist in the level of independence among the various central banks. This makes the feasibility of successful monetary policy convergence within the SADC very unlikely. Any monetary convergence would have to include a unified legal framework within which monetary policy will be executed. The ultimate aim of monetary convergence is a single currency and a single central bank. In order for the process of monetary policy convergence to move forward within the SADC reforms to the current central bank legislation will have to be undertaken. Legislation will have to ensure central bank independence within member countries. It is suggested that central bank independence also be entrenched in the constitutions of the various countries.

Cattermole, Grant. "School reports : university fiction in the masculine tradition of New Zealand literature." Thesis, University of Canterbury. English, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/9709.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis will investigate the fictional discourse that has developed around academia and how this discourse has manifested itself in the New Zealand literary tradition, primarily in the works of M.K. Joseph, Dan Davin and James K. Baxter. These three writers have been selected because of their status within Kai Jensen's conception of “a literary tradition of excitement about masculinity”; in other words, the masculine tradition in New Zealand literature which provides fictional representations of factual events and tensions. This literary approach is also utilised in the tradition of British university fiction, in which the behaviour of students and faculty are often deliberately exaggerated in order to provide a representation of campus life that captures the essence of the reality without being wholly factual. The fact that these three writers attempt, consciously or unconsciously, to combine the two traditions is a matter of great literary interest: Joseph's A Pound of Saffron (1962) appropriates tropes of the British university novel while extending them to include concerns specific to New Zealand; Davin's Cliffs of Fall (1945), Not Here, Not Now (1970) and Brides of Price (1972) attempt to blend traditions of university fiction with the masculine realist tradition in New Zealand literature, though, as we will see, with limited success; Baxter's station as the maternal grandson of a noted professor allows him to criticise the elitist New Zealand university system in Horse (1985) from a unique position, for he was more sympathetic towards what he considered the working class “peasant wisdom” of his father, Archie, than the “professorial knowledge” of Archie's father-in-law. These three authors have been chosen also because of the way they explore attitudes towards universities amongst mainstream New Zealand society in their writing, for while most novels in the British tradition demonstrate little tension between those within the university walls and those without, in New Zealand fiction the tension is palpable. The motivations for this tension will also be explored in due course, but before we can grapple with how the tradition of British university fiction has impacted New Zealand literature, we must first examine the tradition itself.

Abstract:
Onboard power electronics provides essential functions to the electric traction. The strong miniaturization of semiconductors implies ever growing heat flux densities. In addition, the reliability of existing cooling systems is still imperfect and justifies the use of a capillary device pumping. This thesis is therefore dedicated to characterization of an innovative capillary pumped cooling loop, tailored to high flux densities and offering greater reliability. Emphasis is placed on the transfer of heat and mass for a fluid phase immersed in porous media and subjected to high heat densities. This experimental study leads to an analysis of data collected through a nodal model coupled to inverse techniques. This is made in order to retrieve the parameters used to associate overheating to corresponding heat flux density and finally analyze the variations depending on the characteristics of the porous medium. The method made it possible to trace concentrations in the range of 100 W. Cm-2 applied to the porous medium. Secondly, a detailed presentation of the loop phase, using this kind of flow, is focused on the originality of the architecture used in relation to the usual two phase loops. Tests are performed by scanning a variety of parameters such as heat density injected to the evaporator or pressure drop generated by the loop. The early developments brought to a behavioral model helps to analyze some transitory and stationary phases, able to transfer up to 5. 5 kW per evaporator

Abstract:
The aim of this work is to adjust the spectral position of the surface plasmon resonance of noble-metal nanoparticles embedded in a dielectric matrix by tailoring their morphology and their spatial organization. We show that when the growth is performed on plane substrates, it is possible to modify the aspect ratio of the particles H/D, and thus their optical response by changing the nature of the matrix. Quantitative structural analyzes carried out by using high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electronic microscopy (HAADF-STEM) imaging reveal that H/D is a decreasing function of the diameter D, independently of the deposited metal amount. In order to understand these effects of the matrix on the structural and optical properties of the particles, various studies (influence of the metal and deposited amount, presence of a buffer layer, influence of the elaboration conditions, covering rate of the particles,. . . ) are presented and numerical simulations of the optical spectra are proposed by integrating the structural parameters from the HAADF analysis in a model of Yamaguchi. A second step consists in using nanostructured sapphire surfaces in order to induce a surface organization of the particles, and thus to involve an anisotropy of their optical properties. We show that according to the geometry used during the deposition (normal incidence, grazing incidence, orientation and angle of incidence of atomic flux), it is possible to select the type of facets on which the growth takes place (shadowing effect), and consequently to elaborate self-organized systems of metal nanoislands constituted of stripes or linear chains of particles, whose optical properties display a light-polarization dependence

Bigler, Amanda M. "Fragmented perspectives : creating empathy through experiments in form and perspective in short fiction." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2017. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/27113.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis addresses a creative writing approach to exploring reader empathy through the critical analysis of writing devices implemented by contemporary American short fiction writers and through creative experimentation through a written collection of short stories. It explores the ways in which writers can implement specific literary devices to potentially affect a reader's emotional reaction to a character or situation. The specified devices in this research have been utilised by contemporary American authors in their short fiction collections, namely Lydia Davis (The Collected Stories of Lydia Davis), George Saunders (Tenth of December), and David Foster Wallace (Brief Interviews with Hideous Men), who have influenced reader empathy in their short stories. Two categories of devices are in focus: narrative perspective and story format. These categories are signified due to contemporary American authors' experimentation with these devices and due to their inclusion in literary theory on reader empathy and fiction, namely Suzanne Keen's theory of narrative empathy. She focuses on the importance of reader empathy (namely, the effects that fiction can have on a reader in reality) and discusses devices that writers have used to possibly evoke these emotions. Keen explores the relationship between a reader and character identification, with a further emphasis on reader empathy and reader altruism in an inter-disciplinary setting, stating that reader empathy may lead to reader altruism; however, little to no research has been conducted on the creative implementation of writing techniques in regards to reader empathy from the perspective of a creative writer. Through creative application, this thesis aims to show the ways in which devices explored by narrative theorists can create the possibility for reader empathy. Therefore, the thesis takes into account first-, second-, and third-person narrative perspectives and question and answer (Q&A), short-short (a.k.a. flash fiction), and segmented formats through literary analysis of contemporary short fiction and through writing experimentation in the form of a short story collection. The thesis aims to explore the creative use of these devices and their linkage to reader reaction by the production of a short fiction collection entitled Fragmented Perceptions: A Collection of Characters. This creative work intends to implement the specified devices researched in order to experiment with perspective and format in relation to a possible empathetic connection of the reader to a character. Finally, by analysing possible effects on reader empathy through devices employed in the creative work, the thesis explores ways in which authors can use narrative perspective and format to discover various ways in which a writer can implement devices to affect reader empathy through short fiction.

Davis, Nicole Kristina. "Extent and timing of Laurentide glacial Lake Musselshell, Central Montana." Thesis, Montana State University, 2004. http://etd.lib.montana.edu/etd/2005/davis/DavisN0805.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Glacial Lake Musselshell is the middle link in a chain of lakes that formed along the Pleistocene Laurentide ice margin in central Montana. It was first recognized because scores of glacially-transported boulders from the Canadian Shield are found in the Musselshell River basin, yet there is no evidence that the Laurentide ice sheet advanced that far south. For a century, the ice-rafted boulders remained the only physical evidence associated with the lake. No other features typical of other large, ephemeral lakes - varved lacustrine sediment, inflow deltas, or lake shorelines - had been identified for Lake Musselshell. A sequence of nine river terraces and >100 previously located boulders provided the opportunity to place Lake Musselshell, and the corresponding Laurentide ice margin, in the context of regional and global chronologies. Terrace gradient and provenance, surface exposure ages of ice-rafted boulders, and identification of additional lake-related features were the most useful tools for establishing the extent and timing of Lake Musselshell. Lake Musselshell probably existed as one or more short-lived stage(s) that reached a maximum altitude of ~920 m. The absence of varves, deltas and shorelines suggests against one or more stable levels. Deposits of sheet-like silt and fine sand are interpreted as slackwater sediment from one or more (hydraulically dammed?) lakes. The lake(s) drained under or in front of the ice sheet, down the modern Missouri River channel. Strong evidence was found that Lake Musselshell existed during the Late Wisconsin stage. Twenty-seven 10Be surface exposure ages from ice-rafted boulders are all Late Wisconsin and younger (5.2-21.7 ka). Canadian Shield gravel occurs only in the lowest (probably Late Wisconsin) Pleistocene terrace. Additionally, upstream convergence of the Musselshell River terraces implies that displacement of the Missouri River by the Laurentide ice sheet occurred only recently (possibly Late Wisconsin). Pre-Late Wisconsin glacial advances into central Montana cannot be ruled out. Older deposits may be buried, removed or modified by erosion. However, the ice-rafted boulders and glacially-derived alluvium in the Musselshell basin are probably Late Wisconsin in age. Therefore, the Late Wisconsin Laurentide ice sheet may have been the most extensive Pleistocene ice sheet in central Montana.

Abstract:
In this investigation the students in fifth through eighth grades were placed in math classes based on their ability (homogenous grouping). MAP math test scores and teacher input were used to group the students by their ability. This treatment was implemented to see if there was a change in student achievement and to see if there were any student attitude changes about math. The post-treatment results indicated that students MAP test scores varied greatly for each individual but 82% of students increased their scores from the pre to post-treatment. The results indicated that the percent increase in MAP test scores were the highest during the pretreatment. The above grade level students had a 6.5% increase, at grade level had a 5.5% increase, and the below grade level had a 6.8% increase in their MAP test scores. During the post-treatment the group of students that were most affected by the ability grouping were the above grade level students. They had a 4.2% increase in their MAP test scores during the treatment year. The students that were at grade level had a 2.3% increase in their MAP test scores. The students that were negatively affected by the ability grouping were the below grade level students. They increased their scores by .3% in the treatment year. AIMSweb Concepts and Applications increased following the treatment from 8.1% to a 16% increase in the test scores. AIMSweb Computation scores decreased in overall percent gains from a 17.7% to an 11.1% following the treatment. Students' attitudes about math were more positive after the treatment but the students said that there was little benefit to their science class when they were in ability groped math class.

Abstract:
Camelina sativa (L.) Crantz (large-seeded false-flax) is a recently introduced oilseed crop in Montana and has potential for large scale production for the biofuel market. However, due to weedy characteristics, the invasive potential of this species is of concern. A need exists to create a pre-entry protocol to accurately assess risk to minimize uncertainty inherent in qualitative weed risk assessment approaches. We assessed the probability of C. sativa to invade rangeland ecosystems of southwest Montana to address this concern. The objectives of this study were to 1) quantitatively assess the invasion potential of C. sativa by collecting demographic data over two years and developing a population dynamics model, 2) compare experimental results and modeling outcomes to predictions suggested by a qualitative weed risk assessment system, and 3) assess the impact of growing conditions on the relative competitiveness of C. sativa and Brassica napus (L.) (canola). Objective 1 was carried out in two contrasting rangeland ecosystems to assess the effects of disturbance and seeding season on emergence, survival, and fecundity rates of C. sativa. Population growth (lambda) was forecasted by developing a population dynamics model. Resulting lambda values from simulations using observed data never exceeded 0.03 and the maximum time to extinction was six years. The low lambda values indicate that the threat of invasion by this species in the studied ecosystems is low. Objective 2 compared quantitative results to predictions from the Australian weed risk assessment (WRA) model. In contrast to experimental results, outcomes from the WRA suggested that this species should not be allowed entry into the region. These opposing results highlight the need for a more comprehensive approach to weed risk assessment. Objective 3 was conducted over three trials in two greenhouses. A replacement series design was used to estimate the effects of soil conditions and the presence of an invasive weed, Bromus tectorum (L.) (cheatgrass, downy brome), on the competitive outcomes between C. sativa and canola. Replacement series diagrams determined that competition occurred and that canola was the superior competitor in all treatments, thus providing further evidence that the invasion potential of C. sativa is low.

Davis, Windy Niccole. "Effects of coalbed natural gas development on fish assemblages in tributary streams in the Powder River Basin, Montana and Wyoming." Thesis, Montana State University, 2008. http://etd.lib.montana.edu/etd/2008/davis/DavisW0508.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
The Powder River Basin in Wyoming and Montana is undergoing the world's largest development of coalbed natural gas (CBNG) extraction. Potential exists for substantial effects on aquatic ecosystems because CBNG development involves production and disposal of large quantities of CBNG product water that differs from surface waters and alters natural flow regimes. In 2005 and 2006, I compared fish assemblages in streams with (treatment) and without (control) CBNG development, determined fish presence, growth, and survival in streams composed entirely of product water, and compared fish assemblages at multiple points above and below development to determine the effects of coalbed natural gas development on fish assemblages in the Powder River Basin. Some evidence suggested CBNG development had little or no effect on fish. For example, species richness and index of biotic integrity (IBI) scores were similar between developed and undeveloped sites, and no strong relationships existed between overall IBI scores or most IBI metric scores and the number or density of CBNG wells in a drainage area. Streams composed largely or entirely of product water were inhabited by reproducing populations of several species of fish. Other evidence suggested that CBNG may negatively affect fish assemblages over time. Conductivity was on average higher in treatment streams and was negatively related to biotic integrity. Bicarbonate, one of the primary salts in product water, appeared to be harmful to some species of fish. One salt-tolerant non-native species, northern plains killifish, was observed almost exclusively in treatment streams. The study was limited by a lack of pre-development data, unquantifiable product-water discharges, and because it was conducted during dry years. Potential effects of CBNG development may be more apparent during wet years when more sensitive fish assemblages are present. Monitoring efforts, development of a bicarbonate water quality standard, and efforts towards requiring complete product-water discharge reporting should continue.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In developing designs for high speed vessels, the engineer must account for the response of the ship in the environment while operating at mission essential speeds. This thesis presents a seakeeping analysis of David Taylor Model Basin's Series 64 models scaled to a 2500-ton displacement using the SHIPMO and MATLAB software. It also discusses the current technology associated with high speed vessels (HSV's) and the relation to the US Navy. Series 64 models provided the benchmark for resistance data. To expand upon this well known series, this research develops seakeeping data trends for scaled-up models. SHIPMO allows the user to specify the ship's characteristics and the environmental conditions such as wave specifications and spectrum. Using the output files from SHIPMO, the MATLAB program designed during this thesis, produced contour plots for the models' response in pitch and heave. Seakeeping trends were observed based on the plots and further compared to calculations of the seakeeping rank, R, a formula originally developed by Nathan Bales. The results of the research can be used by engineers in application to the design of small displacement, high speed ships, both monohulls and multi-hulls.

Abstract:
The melancholic speech of Hume, placed in the term of the first book of its early work, puts in danger the philosophy, by drawing the necessary conclusions of an empiricist theory of the knowledge

The act of anointing, which the term Messiah comes from, was a custom of ancient Middle East peoples, and it was assimilated by Israel. The Old Testament, however, reinterpreted such act of anointing. At first, The King was titled The Anointed, maxiah;. Accordingly, King David was the one who originated the messianic mentality in Israel. Concernin g messianic theology, the prophet Isaiah became an important exponent. He addressed to the upper classes of Jerusalem and proposed the anointed of Yahweh, in replacement for the king of The House of David. That was so because the messianism had also become a movement of resistance for the fulfilment of justice and rights, which culminated in lack of peace. In his way, Isaiah offers too a new perception of messianism, namely, a rupture with the House of David (7,17). Such a Messiah was not under the human categories of a good, strong warrior king, but rather under the guidance of the Spirit of Yahweh. Therefore, the Messiah could be a child one (7,14; 9,5). The aim of this dissertation is to track along the way from the arising of the anointed, or the act of anointing, to the Isaiah´s conception of messiah. The development of this work will show, in the end, the messianic typology presented by the prophet Isaiah as from the pericopes 7,10-17 and 8,23-9,6.(AU)

Abstract:
The Stars of David is based on the true story of a woman whose love of baseball stood above all. Set in the midst of the Great Depression, Jackie Austin, disgusted by the chauvinistic expectations of her impoverished father, sets off on her own to play for whatever team that will have her. That team proves to be the barnstorming House of David Baseball Club, an ascetic religious commune struggling to regain past glory after a decade of tragedy and shame. Outsiders and freaks to the rest of the world, these new "Stars" of David must learn to work together on the field in order to prosper in life. Can they succeed in the staunchly traditional, largely racist world of Depression-era Major League Baseball? Or will they, too, be whitewashed by time?

Full text
Abstract:
The evolution of david lodge's oeuvre seems to correspond strictly to the three phases of the modern catholic novel as defined by the american critic gene kellogg in the vital tradition : the catholic novel in a period of convergence (chicago : loyola university press. 1970). After a first traditional phase as a "separatist" novelist writing for the exaltation of his religion and community, lodge moves towards an "assimilative" attitude and rebels against the religious and communal values which he had hitherto scrupulously respected, before entering a third "interpenetrative" phase which heralds a return towards the same values according to the rules of an aesthetics of indirection. This work is fundamentally based on a thematic analysis and relies on the study of the motifs and topoi characteristic of the catholic novel as a genre. This approach helps establish lodge's hesitation between scrupulous respect of and variations from the generic decorum of the catholic novel. Moreover, alongside a represented attitude of respect and transgression (as is obvious in his treatment of the theme of sexual morality, for instance), lodge offers a representing treatment of the same notions by resorting to decrowning, parodic and comic antitheses, reflexivity, or even comedy. His chronicle of the evolution of a religious community thus associates realism and experiment, and presents the reader with a redefinition of the postmodern catholic novel

Abstract: The following text proposes a forthcoming between the Neo-baroque theories, given by Omar Calabrese and Severo Sarduy, with the audio-visual image and its specificities. The Neo-baroque elements and figures serve as a framework for analyzing the poetic of a British filmmaker Derek Jarman, specifically scenes from the film Caravaggio, 1986. Jarman travels his works through the universe of Neo-baroque, being a constant in his filmography appreciation of the arts, for experimentation, controversy and the poetic construction supported by these baroque elements: the excess, chaos, multiplicity, drama, sexuality , intertextuality, etc.. By combining these two systems of cognition, cinema and art history, the Neo-baroque enters by the post-modernity as one of the ways that best describes this historical moment. Its confluence with the specifics provided by the audiovisual image (framing, photography, sound, lighting, etc.), multiply their understanding and their resonance
