Abstract:

Tiivistelmä. Tässä kandidaatintyössä käsitellään big datan ja kaupunkisuunnittelun yhteyttä. Ensimmäiseksi big dataa itsessään, sekä sen jälkeen sen mahdollisuuksia ja haasteita kaupunkisuunnittelun yhteydessä. Big datan hyödyntäminen on kaupunkisuunnittelussa kasvava trendi ja tulevaisuudessa rutiinia. Terminä big data on tuore, sillä siitä on puhuttu vasta 10 vuotta. Usein termi big data käsitetään kolmen v:n määritelmän kautta. Lyhyesti sanottuna se on kuitenkin dataa, joka ei mahdu perinteiseen Excel-tiedostoon. Datan määrä kasvaa yli 40 prosenttia vuosittain digitaalisten laitteiden yleistyessä. Merkittävimmät big datan lähteet kaupungeille ovat älypuhelinten tuottama sijaintitieto, julkisen liikenteen älykorttitiedot, sosiaalisen median ja hakukoneiden tuottama data, sensoreiden ja antureiden tuottama data, sekä eri datalähteiden yhdistely. Big data on yksi älykaupunkien rakennusaineista, ja se muuttaa kaupunkisuunnittelua merkittävästi. Kaupungit haluavat tehostaa toimintojaan ja olla entistä kilpailukykyisempiä. Big datan avulla päätöksentekoa on mahdollista muuttaa entistä dynaamisemmaksi ja tehokkaammaksi, sekä sen avulla on mahdollista osallistaa laajempi kansanjoukko vaikuttamaan päätöksentekoon. Lisäksi big data on tuonut uusia mahdollisuuksia päätösten simulointiin ja arviointiin. Konkreettisemmin big dataa on hyödynnetty muun muassa maankäytön ja liikenteen suunnittelussa. Aiheen tuoreuden takia kaikkia mahdollisuuksia ei ole vielä löydetty ja ala tulee kehittymään nopeasti. Kuitenkin myös riskejä ja haasteita on paljon. Näistä oleellisimpia ovat big datan saatavuus, laatu ja koulutuksen puute. Myös yksityisyys, tietoturva ja liian datavetoinen päätöksenteko herättävät huolta.

Abstract:

Security vulnerabilities are a serious concern in today’s software development. Complex software applications and systems may contain flaws that can be exploited by a remote attacker to execute malicious code. One method of finding vulnerabilities and bugs is by using a method of robustness testing, fuzzing. Fuzzers are mostly automated tools that are used to find flaws and unexpected behavior in the system under test. Nowadays it is not uncommon to have multiple fuzzers running simultaneously on different systems in order to find bugs more efficiently. Although the fuzz testing process is mostly automated, there can be value in providing information about the testing process and its results in a visual form. This work studies the use of data visualization techniques in monitoring fuzz testing processes. This is accomplished by developing a network based monitoring system that collects and visualizes test data. The monitoring system is used to run test scenarios and simulations to study the usefulness of data visualization, and its different techniques in fuzz testing. The results from the performed case studies show that two-dimensional visualization techniques can effectively provide useful information about the fuzz testing process. The results also indicate that interactive visualization techniques are especially useful for testing process monitoring scenarios Tärkeä osa nykypäivän ohjelmistokehitystä on mahdollisten tietoturva-aukkojen löytäminen ja paikkaaminen. Etenkin monimutkaiset ohjelmistot ja järjestelmät voivat sisältää virheitä, joita ulkopuolinen taho voi käyttää haitallisen toiminnan ajamiseen tietokoneella. Yksi keino tietoturva-aukkojen löytämiseen on fuzz-testauksen käyttäminen. Fuzzerit ovat enimmäkseen automatisoituja ohjelmia, joita käytetään löytämään tilanteita, joissa ohjelmisto kaatuu tai käyttäytyy odottamattomasti. Nykyään on yleistä käyttää useita fuzzereita rinnakkain eri järjestelmissä, jotta ohjelmistovirheitä löydettäisiin tehokkaammin. Fuzz-testauksen valvonta, varsinkin useiden järjestelmien tilanteissa, voi hyötyä testausprosessin tiedon esittämisestä visuaalisin keinoin. Tässä työssä tutkitaan datan visualisoinnin tekniikoita fuzz-testauksen valvonnan yhteydessä. Työssä kehitetään verkkopohjainen valvontajärjestelmä, joka kerää ja visualisoi testidataa muilta järjestelmiltä. Valvontajärjestelmää käytetään visualisoimaan dataa sekä yksittäisestä fuzzerista, että laajemmista monen fuzzerin simulaatioista. Saatujen tulosten perusteella nähdään, että kaksiulotteisten visualisointitekniikoiden avulla voidaan saada hyödyllistä ja helposti ymmärrettävää tietoa fuzzausprosessista. Tulosten mukaan erityisen hyödyllisiksi fuzzauksen valvonnassa osottautuivat visualisaatiot, jotka tarjoavat interaktiivisuutta käyttäjälle

Abstract:

Yhteiskunnassamme kerätään jatkuvasti erilaista tietoa erilaisista asioista. Tästä suuresta tietomäärästä saadaan yhdistelemällä, louhimalla ja analysoimalla yksityiskohtaisia malleja esimerkiksi kulutuskäyttäytymiseen, elintapoihin tai harrastuksiin liittyen. Tällaisista suurista tietomassoista käytetään tässä tutkielmassa vakiintunutta nimitystä big data. Big dataa on hyödynnetty eri tarkoituksiin jo pitkään, mutta sen koko potentiaalia ei ole vielä saavutettu. Koulu yhteiskunnallisena instituutiona ei ole big datan suhteen erillinen saareke, vaan säilyttääkseen legimiteettinsä ja toteuttaakseen kasvatus-, opetus- ja sosiaalistamistehtäväänsä sen täytyy sekä kyetä vastaamaan toimintaympäristön muutokseen että olla omalta osaltaan luomassa muutosta. Osana tätä tehtävää kouluissa on pyrittävä omaksumaan tietoperustaisuuteen pohjautuva ajattelutapa ja hyödynnettävä big datan tarjoamat mahdollisuudet oppimisen yksilöllistämisessä ja kouluorganisaation kehittämisessä. Tässä tutkielmassa tarkastellaan koulujen nykytilannetta big datan hyödyntämisessä haastattelemalla kuutta Uudenmaan alueen rehtoria. Metodologialtaan tutkielma pohjautuu Grounded theoryn Straussian discipline suuntaukselle ottaen vaikutteita Charmazian grounded theorysta. Laadullisena tutkielmana se kartoittaa big datan hyödyntämistä puolistrukturoitujen haastattelujen kautta lähestyen aihetta seuraavin kysymyksin: 1. Miten kouluissa kerätään, analysoidaan ja hyödynnetään oppilaasta kerättyä tietoa oppimispolun eri vaiheissa? 2. Millä tavoin koulussa tuetaan yksilöllisiä oppimispolkuja, ja miten opetussuunnitelmauudistus vaikuttaa tässä yhteydessä? 3. Miten koulu instituutiona on valmis omaksumaan tietoperustaisuuteen laajasti pohjautuvan ajattelutavan? 4. Mitkä tekijät ovat tulevaisuudessa merkityksellisiä big datan hyödyntämisessä kouluissa? Tässä tutkielmassa tarkastellaan myös koulun organisaatiokulttuurin vaikutusta big datan hyödyntämiseen ja digitalisaatioon liittyen sekä lainsäädännön asettamia raameja koulujen tiedon keruulle, säilytykselle ja hyödyntämiselle. Tutkimustulokset paljastavat, että big data käsitteenä on vielä kouluissa vieras, ja tutkimushetkellä oppilaista kerätyn tiedon hyödyntäminen ei saavuta koko potentiaaliaan, mikä vastaa aiemmin saatuja tuloksia (Cope & Kalantzis, 2016). Tuloksista käy myös ilmi, että koulujen organisaatiokulttuurit ovat vaihtelevassa määrin dynaamisia ja että digitalisaation edistämiseksi tarvitaan sekä asenteiden muutosta että täydennyskoulutusta. Haastatellut rehtorit suhtautuvat big datan hyödyntämiseen positiivisesti ja kokevat, että yksilöllisten oppimispolkujen edistäminen vastaa tulevaisuuden toimintaympäristön asettamiin haasteisiin. Tulevaisuuden kehityssuuntien hahmotteleminen big dataan ja kouluinstituutioon liittyen on haastavaa muutosvauhdin ollessa kiivas, ja lisää tutkimusta ja keskustelua tarvitaan kartoittamaan erilaisten käytänteiden hyötyjä. Tämä tutkimus toimii osana tätä jatkumoa asettaen yhden kiintopisteen big datan hyödyntämiseen, tietoperustaisuuteen ja kouluinstituutioon liittyen.

Abstract:

Työn tavoitteena on tutkia ja käyttää R-ohjelmistoympäristön eri vaihtoehtoja kokeellisen datan käsittelyyn ja analysointiin. Esiteltyjä asioita voidaan käyttää R:n monipuolisimpien menetelmien pohjatietoina sekä R:stä kiinnostuneelle aloittelijalle toimivana oppaana. Työssä esitellään R:n peruskäyttöä, peruskomennot datan tuontiin ja tallentamiseen ja peruskomentoja aineiston muokkaamiseen. Aineistoja voidaan haluttaessa kuvata erilaisilla graafisilla kuvaajilla. Työssä esitellään, miten useita erilaisia kuvaajia voidaan R:llä piirtää. Lisäksi kerrotaan hieman mahdollisista satunnaisaineistojen luomisesta R:llä. Kokeellisen datan käsittelyssä voidaan analysoida aineistoja erilaisilla tilastollisilla tunnusluvuilla ja käyttää graafisia menetelmiä aineistojen muuttujien tutkimiseen. Regressioanalyysillä voidaan tutkia eri muuttujien riippuvuuksia ja muodostaa malleja, joilla aineiston lähtömuuttujaa voidaan ennustaa. Residuaaleja tutkimalla voidaan löytää puutteita muodostetussa mallissa.

Abstract:

Oulun yliopistollisen sairaalan sädehoidon yksikkö käyttää hoitojen suunnitteluun Varian Medical Systemsin Eclipse-hoitosuunnittelujärjestelmää. Työn tarkoituksena oli tutustua Eclipsen ohjelmointiympäristöön (Eclipse Scripting API, ESAPI) ja selvittää, mitä se mahdollistaa. Tämän jälkeen asetettiin uusi tavoite: tehdään ESAPI:a käyttäen uusi ohjelma, jolla voidaan valita useilta potilailta halutut sädehoitosuunnitelmat ja tuoda niistä struktuurien DVH-datat Matlab-yhteensopivaan tekstitiedostoon. Etsittiin internetistä tietoa ESAPI:in liittyen ja ajettiin esimerkkiskriptejä. Ohjelmaa kirjoittaessa hyödynnettiin kahta valmista skriptiä, joita muokattiin tarpeisiin sopiviksi ja yhdistettiin omaan koodiin. Ohjelmassa on selkeä hierarkia: ensimmäisellä tasolla käydään läpi käyttäjän syöttämät potilaat, toisella potilaan sisältämät suunnitelmat, kolmannella suunnitelman sisältämät struktuurit ja neljännellä struktuurin sisältämä DVH-data. Ohjelmassa valitaan kansio, jonne data halutaan tuoda. Jokaiselle potilaalle luodaan oma kansio, joka sisältää suunnitelmien tai ns. plan sumien mukaan nimetyt .csv-tiedostot. Yhdessä tiedostossa on suunnitelman tai plan sumin jokaisen struktuurin sisältämä DVH-data. Tätä dataa voidaan käsitellä mm. Matlab- ja Excel-ohjelmissa ja piirtää sen pohjalta DVH-kuvaajia. ESAPI:n avulla voidaan hakea tietoa ARIA-tietokannasta laajalta alueelta ja automatisoida tiedonhakuprosesseja, mistä on hyötyä sädehoidon henkilökunnalle. Ohjelma täytti annetut vaatimukset ja soveltuu käytettäväksi mahdollisissa jatkotutkimuksissa The radiation therapy unit of Oulu University Hospital uses Eclipse treatment planning system by Varian Medical Systems for treatment planning. Objective was to become acquainted with Eclipse’s programming interface (Eclipse Scripting API, ESAPI) and find out what it enables. After this a new objective was set: a new program with which one could choose treatment plans from several patients and export DVH data from their structures to a text file compatible with Matlab. Information about ESAPI was searched and example scripts were run. In the final program two written scripts were exploited. These scripts were remodeled to fit the needs and joined with self-written code. There is a clear hierarchy in the program. At the first level program goes through the patients that user has chosen. Then at the second level it goes through the plans that patient includes. At the third level program iterates through the structures in a plan and at the fourth through the DVH data in a structure. In the program user chooses a folder where to export the data. For every patient, a folder is created and inside one are the .csv-files named by plans or plan summaries. A file contains DVH-data of each structure in a plan / plan summary. One can process this data in Matlab or Excel and based on it, plot DVH graphs. With ESAPI one can gather information of ARIA database from a wide area and automatize information retrieval processes, which is useful for the staff of radiation therapy unit. The program met given demands and can be used in potential further studies

Abstract:

Afin de répondre aux besoins énergétiques du futur, l’isolation, pièce maîtresse des équipements Haute Tension, doit se réinventer. Les nanodiélectriques semblent constituer la promesse d’une rupture technologique majeure. En s’appuyant sur des nanocomposites à matrice polyéthylène linéaire basse densité renforcée par des nano-glaises et fabriqués à partir d’un mélange maître commercial, le présent mémoire vise à caractériser la fidélité des techniques de mesures appliquées aux nanodiélectriques ainsi que les propriétés diélectriques de ces matériaux. Ainsi, la fidélité de la spectroscopie diélectrique tant fréquentielle que temporelle est analysée avec une emphase particulière sur la technique de métallisation par pulvérisation cathodique des échantillons et sur la transposition du domaine temporel au domaine fréquentiel des mesures. De même, lors d’une mesure de rigidité diélectrique, le rôle significatif du milieu environnant et de l’épaisseur des échantillons sur la variation du paramètre d’échelle alpha est montré et analysé en lien avec la présence des décharges partielles surfaciques. En tenant compte de ces limites et pour différentes compositions massiques de nanoparticules, l’évolution de la permittivité complexe des nanodiélectriques en fonction de la fréquence, leur linéarité ainsi que leur conductivité en fonction du champ électrique est étudiée en lien avec le rôle que semble jouer l’interface nanométrique. De même, l’évolution de la rigidité diélectrique en fonction de la composition massique en nano-glaises est investiguée en lien avec l’amélioration de la résistance aux décharges partielles que semble introduire les nanoparticules. Enfin, une ouverture vers la nanostructuration des isolations des câbles souterrains est proposée en s’appuyant d’un côté sur la caractérisation diélectrique de nanodiélectriques à matrice polyéthylène renforcée par des nano-glaises ou des nanosilices et de l’autre sur une analyse succincte des coûts.

Abstract:

The Daya Bay reactor neutrino experiment is a high sensitivity experiment designed to determine the last unknown neutrino mixing angle $theta_{13}$ by measuring disappearance of reactor antineutrinos emitted from six 2.9 $GW_{th}$ reactors at the Daya Bay Nuclear Power Station. There are eight identical Gd-loaded liquid scintillator detectors deployed in two near (flux-weighted baseline 512 $m$ and 561 $m$) and one far (1579 $m$) underground experimental halls to detect the inverse beta decay interaction. This dissertation describes the Daya Bay Experiment and individual contributions to this experiment. Chapter 1 reviews the history of the neutrino and the neutrino oscillation phenomena. The reactor based neutrino experiments in different times are described in this chapter in detail. It presents the motivation of the Daya Bay Experiment. In Chapter 2, the neutrino detection method and the $theta_{13}$ relative measurement method are introduced. This chapter focuses on the design of the Daya Bay Experiment, including antineutrino detector, calibration system, muon veto system and muon tagging system. Chapter 3 shows the design, development, construction, and assembly of Muon Pool PMT calibration system, and presents an algorithm of calculating the muon pool PMT timing offset values. Chapter 4 focuses on the manufacture, installation and commissioning of RPC HV system. Chapter 5 presents the analyses of the radioactive isotopes induced by comic muons. The Daya Bay detector energy response model is also described in detail. The relative rate analysis results exclude a zero value from $sin^22theta_{13}$ with a significance of 7.7 standard deviation using 139 days of data, 28909 (205308) antineutrino candidates which were recorded at the far hall (near halls) and shows $sin^22theta_{13} = 0.089pm0.011$ in a three-neutrino framework. A combined analysis of the $overline nu_e$ rates and energy spectra based on the detector energy response model improved measurement of the mixing angle $sin^22theta_{13} = 0.090^{+0.008}_{-0.009}$ by using 217 days of data, 41589 (203809 and 92912) antineutrino candidates were detected in the far hall (near halls). Also the first direct measurement of the $overline nu_e$ mass-squared difference $|Delta m^2_{ee}|= (2.59^{+0.19}_{-0.20})times10^{-3}$ $eV^2$. It is consistent with $|Delta m^2_{mumu}|$ measured by muon neutrino disappearance, supporting the three-flavor oscillation model. Ph. D.

Avoin data edistää hallinnon läpinäkyvyyttä ja demokratiaa sekä tehostaa hallinnon palveluja, mutta se mahdollistaa myös uusien innovatiivisten sovellusten ja palveluiden kehittämisen. Jotta avointa dataa voitaisiin hyödyntää innovatiivisten sovellusten pohjana, tulisi avoimen datan täyttää vaatimukset datan laadun, kiinnostavuuden sekä datan helpon saatavuuden suhteen. Edellytykset avoimen datan innovoinnin mahdollistajana ovat teknisesti laadukkaat sekä kehittäjiä kiinnostavat ja hyödylliset data-aineistot, sekä avoimet API-rajapinnat. Itse avoimen datan lisäksi merkitystä on myös sillä, miten avointa dataa pyritään edistämään, sekä miten avointa dataa tuodaan kehittäjien ulottuville. Myös julkishallintojen aktiivinen osallistuminen avoimen datan julkaisijana ja edistäjänä on tärkeää. Suomessa tilanne avoimen datan suhteen on kohtuullisen hyvä, mutta parannusta tarvitaan avoimen datan laadun, API-rajapintoihin määrän, sekä avoimen datan portaalien toiminnan osalta.

Merkittävä osa lääketieteellisestä tutkimuksesta tehdään suurista määristä moniulotteista dataa, josta pyritään muodostamaan malleja ja tunnistamaan vallitsevia suhteita uuden tiedon löytämiseksi. Perinteiset tilastotieteelliset menetelmät ovat erittäin suosittuja tällaisessa tutkimuksessa, mutta ajautuvat usein ongelmiin, kun tietojoukko sisältää paljon virheitä ja poikkeavia havaintoja. Näiden menetelmien käyttöä voidaan täydentää tällaista dataa sietävillä koneoppimisen menetelmillä, kuten tietyillä neuroverkkomalleilla. Tämä tutkielma käsittelee itseorganisoituvaksi kartaksi kutsuttua neuroverkkomallia ja sen soveltamista kasvaimista kerättävän datan analyysiin. Itseorganisoituva kartta on automaattinen data-analyysin metodi, joka luo kuvauksen merkittävimmistä moniulotteisessa datassa vallitsevista suhteista.

Tiivistelmä. Tutkin tässä tutkimuksessa big datan ja koneoppimisen mahdollisuuksia asiakassuhteiden kehittämisessä suomalaisissa yrityksissä. Dataan itsessään suhtaudutaan yrityksissä yhä useammin strategisen kilpailuedun näkökulmasta, mistä johtuen tutkimuksessa pyritään selventämään, miten tehokkaasti big dataa ja koneoppimista hyödynnetään osana yritysten asiakassuhteiden hallintaa ja minkälaista hyötyä se on tuonut yrityksille. Yhä monimuotoisemman datan hyödyntäminen yhdessä tekoälyn sovellusten, kuten koneoppimisen kanssa ajaa yrityksiä yhä vahvemmin kohti datalla johdettua organisaatiota, minkä tuomia haasteita ja muita huomioon otettavia asioita pyritään selvittämään. Tämän tutkimuksen päätutkimuskysymys muodostuu kahdesta alatutkimuskysymyksestä: 1) Minkälaista etua big datan ja koneoppimisen hyödyntäminen tuo asiakassuhteiden kehittämiseen? ja 2) Mitä yrityksiltä vaaditaan sisäisesti, kun ne pyrkivät hyödyntämään big dataa ja koneoppimista asiakassuhteiden kehittämisessä? Tutkimuksen teoreettinen osa koostuu big dataa ja koneoppimista käsittelevistä osioista, joita tarkastellaan muun muassa pitkäaikaisten asiakassuhteiden, asiakassuhteiden hallinnan ja arvon yhteisluonnin näkökulmasta. Big datan ja koneoppimisen johtamista käsittelevässä osiossa käsitellään datalla johdetun organisaation piirteitä ja sen tuomia muutoksia. Keinoja uudenlaisen organisaation luomiseksi ja muutoksen ajamiseksi käsitellään myös sekä big dataan ja koneoppimiseen liittyviä haasteita yrityksissä. Tutkimuksen empiirisessä osiossa tein kolme haastattelua suomalaisten konsultoivien yritysten henkilöille. Kyseiset yritykset tarjoavat keinoja parantaa asiakassuhteiden hallintaa monimuotoisen datan avulla. Suoritin haastattelujen tulosten perusteella kvalitatiivisen analyysin, jossa pyrin vertailemaan saatuja tuloksia kerätyn lähdeaineiston kanssa. Big datan ja koneoppimisen potentiaali asiakassuhteiden kehittämisessä on lähdeaineiston ja haastattelujen perusteella kiistaton useimmilla toimialoilla. Niiden voidaan nähdä edesauttavan asiakkaiden hankinnassa, suhteiden syventämisessä sekä niiden pitkäaikaisuuden turvaamisessa, kun yritykset tuntevat asiakkaansa paremmin, osaavat ennustaa heidän tulevia tarpeitaan ja pystyvät reagoimaan niihin proaktiivisesti ja nopeasti. Ymmärryksen luomisessa keskeistä on arvon yhteisluonnin varmistaminen, jotta asiakkaille voidaan kohdentaa palveluita tarkasti heidän oman datansa pohjalta. Vaikka onnistumisia näiden suhteen ollaankin jo Suomessa useaan otteeseen nähty, niiden laajamittainen käyttö on vielä vähäistä. Tässä yhtenä suurimmista tekijöistä on organisaatioiden kulttuurien valmiuttomuus datalla johdetun organisaation näkökulmasta. Käytännössä katsoen organisaatioiden kulttuurien tulisi uudistua niiden prosessien, toimintamallien, roolien ja vastuiden kautta kokonaisvaltaisesti, jotta ne pystyvät täysimääräisesti hyödyntämään big datan ja koneoppimisen tarjoamat hyödyt asiakassuhteiden kehittämisessä. Muitakin pienempiä haasteita esimerkiksi koneoppimisen käytännön hyödyntämisessä havaittiin.

Abstract:

Matéq is an Austronesian language of the Land Dayak (Bidayuhic) subgroup spoken by around 10,000–20,000 people in West Kalimantan (Borneo), Indonesia. This thesis presents a sketch grammar of the language based on linguistic fieldwork conducted from September 2012 to January 2013. Topics discussed in the sketch grammar include the geographic and social context of the Matéq language, its phonology and elements of its morphosyntax. Major features of Matéq phonology include the presence of both plain and prenasalised plosives, geminate nasals, and nasal vowels that contrast with oral vowels in certain positions. In terms of morphosyntax, this study shows that Matéq has two sets of personal pronouns which encode information about the generational relationships between speech participants or referents. With respect to grammatical voice, findings suggest that Matéq has five distinct voice constructions which can be distinguished on the basis of their morphosyntactic and semantic properties. Each voice construction also tends to have different pragmatic and TAM associations. This study also shows that Matéq has optional subject marking with certain verbs, and has both continuous and discontinuous serial verb constructions.

Abstract:

The Daya Bay neutrino experiment is designed for measuring the non-zero value for the neutrino mixing angle θ_13. For rare-event detection experiment such as neutrino detection, double-beta-decay experiments and dark-matter searches, cosmic ray muon produced radioactive isotopes are important background. Understanding more about the cosmic ray muon induced radioactive isotopes will help a lot with more precise measurements. My work here is to measure the absolute production yields of radioactive isotopes using different time windows and energy cuts and the associated work here is to extract different isotopes from the candidate events. Three different fitting methods are provided here for data analysis with Monte Carlo tests. Cross check of the result has been done with other group's work using different data selection criteria as well as fitting method. The power law for energy dependence of total cross-section for all muon-produced radioactive isotopes in scintillator target was tested using data from KamLAND [1] and Borexino [7] and using the result of a similar experiment at the SPS muon beam at CERN [23]. published_or_final_version Physics Master Master of Philosophy

Abstract:

This thesis studies the attitudes of the religious scholars associated with the dayah, the traditional institution of religious learning in Aceh, Indonesia, towards issues of the modernization of Islamic law. In the history of Islamic society in Aceh, these scholars, the 'ulama' dayah, have shown great initiative in guiding their society as it sought solutions to various problems. Their response was not confined merely to religious matters but also extended to the economic, political and social problems. The impact of modern science and technology has led to many changes in economics, agriculture, medicine, and other fields. All these changes have to be evaluated in terms of their status in Islamic law, because Muslims have always sought to lead their lives in accordance with Islamic teachings. The 'ulama' dayah, have contributed to meeting the challenge of resolving such problems. In formulating their decisions, the 'ulama' dayah usually refer to the standard texts of the four classical schools of Islamic law. The reliance on classical texts is justified by their conviction that present-day 'ulama' are unable to exercise ijtihad independently since they lack the qualifications which have been traditionally demanded of a mujtahid.

Rabbi saadia ben maimon ibh danan est l'un des derniers poetes et linguistes de la generation ayant vecu a l'epoque de l'expulsion d'espagne (1492). Ses manuscrits, principalement dans le domaine de la grammaire et de la poesie hebraiques (en judeo-arabe) sont uniques en tant qu'appartenant a deux periodes historiques : fin du moyen age et debut des temps modernes. Dans la description du manuscrit (bodleiana, or 612, oxford), que j'ai dechiffre pour le besoin d'etude linguistique et historique, j'ai fait un rappel general de l'epoque et ai analyse en details son introduction en judeo-arabe. Le but etait de verifier si le judeo-arabe de r. Saadia etait un judeo-arabe moderne ou bien seulement la continuation du judeo-arabe moyenageux. L'analyse m'a permis de constater que la langue d'ibn danan etait en fait la continuation directe de la langue utilisee par les grammairiens tels que hayyuj, ibn janah et radak. En plus du dechiffrage du manuscrit, j'ai analyse 30 poemes qu'il a ecrit en hebreu. J'en ai retrouve les metres et les ai rajoutes. Tous les poemes ont pour sujets l'amour, la satire, le vin et la morale Rabbi saadia ben maimon ibn danan is one of the last poets and linguists of generation of the great expulsion (1492). His manuscripts, mainly in the field of hebrew gramar and poetry (in judeo-arabic) are unique as belonging to two historical periods of time : end of the middle ages and beginning of modern times. In the decription of the manuscript (bodleiana, or 612, oxford) that i deciphered for the need of historical and linguistic study, i made a general resume of the epoch and analysed in details its introduction in judeo-arabic. The aim was to verify if the language of r. Saadia was the modern judeo-arabic. Or only the continuation of the middle-age judeo-arabic. The analysis allowed me to state that the language of ibn danan was the same as that used by grammariens like hayyun, ibn janah and radak. In addition to my deciphering of the manuscript, i analysed some 30 poemes he wrote in hebrew, i found the metres and added them. All the poems deal with the subjects of love, satire, wine and morals
