Several nations implemented daylight saving time legislation in the last century, including the United States. The United States briefly experimented with year-round daylight saving time twice--during World War II and the energy crises in the 1970s. Agency  studies and congressional hearings from the 1970s show several benefits of year-round daylight saving time, along with potential disadvantages. These studies are dated, and much has changed in the last thirty years. While congressional efforts to extend daylight saving time in 2007 have again foc

Circadian rhythm disruptions may have harmful impacts on health. Circadian rhythm disruptions caused by jet lag compromise the quality and amount of sleep and may lead to a variety of symptoms such as fatigue, headache, and loss of attention and alertness. Even a minor change in time schedule may cause considerable stress for the body. Transitions into and out of daylight saving time alter the social and environmental timing twice a year. According to earlier studies, this change in time-schedule leads to sleep disruption and fragmentation of the circadian rhythm. Since sleep deprivation decre

This chapter details the author's field notes from the Hastings Natural History Reservation. The author was particularly interested in studying acorn woodpeckers and their nest cavities. Acorn woodpeckers fascinate scientists because they live in groups, often with multiple breeding males and females, and nonbreeding helpers. The breeders share mates readily, and females lay eggs in a common nest, which is always a cavity nest. Moreover, they are quite vocal, even for woodpeckers; some would call them “articulate.” At Hastings, ornithologists annotate their field notes in “bird time” rather th

Abstract Many physiological processes in humans, other animals, and even some bacteria obey a regular pattern based on a 24-hour solar day. These circadian rhythms are the most obvious way humans “tell time.” They are controlled by molecular clocks and genes in cells and the suprachiasmatic nucleus in brains. Those clocks can be thrown off by jet lag, daylight savings time, and other external influences. However, there are also other clocks, such as hormonal cycles and sleep phases. For example, human development involves complex programs of genetic pathways that must be turned on or off at th

An updated version of these metrics can also be employed to establish strategies to adapt the luminaires to the daylight conditions, dimming the luminous flux without external devices and consequently increasing the energy saving of the lighting system. Given this scenario, a new concept is proposed, Continuous Overcast Daylight Autonomy (DAo.con), conceived as the percentage of occupied time during which an illuminance threshold is reache
