Abstract:
✓ Laser energy at a wavelength of 480 nm was applied in 1-µsec pulses of 3 to 10 mJ to two models of vasospasm. Rabbit common carotid arteries (CCA's) were constricted chronically by the application of human blood within a silicone sheath. Peak vasospasm developed 24 to 48 hours later, and persisted for up to 6 days. Endovascular laser treatment was delivered to 40 CCA's via a 200-µm diameter silica quartz fiber introduced through the femoral artery. The CCA caliber increased from 60% of the pre-vasospasm control diameter to a minimum post-laser diameter of 83% of control. No instances of laser-induced perforation or of arterial thrombosis were observed for up to 60 days after treatment. Prophylactic laser application to nine normal vessels was able to attenuate the development of vasospasm if blood was applied immediately thereafter (88% vs. 59% of control diameter, p < 0.02), but not if blood was applied 7 days later. Studies in 16 normal CCA's established that there was a considerable margin between the laser energy required to induce dilatation and that which caused perforation, providing that the fiber remained relatively central within the artery. Morphological examination demonstrated focal loss of endothelial cells immediately after laser application, followed approximately 7 days later by the development of areas of intimal hyperplasia. Only minimal changes were observed in the medial or adventitial layers. In a second study, the basilar artery of seven dogs was constricted chronically by two intracisternal injections of autologous blood 3 days apart. Five dogs received endovascular laser treatment 7 or 10 days after the first injection, when basilar artery diameter was reduced to a mean of 61% and 77% of control, respectively. Immediately following treatment, basilar artery diameter increased to 104% and 102% of resting diameter, respectively. Both untreated and laser-treated arteries were smaller than the control diameter at 30 days (80% and 82%, respectively), but in each group the vasodilatory response to hypercapnia was preserved. These findings indicate that 1-µsec laser pulses are well tolerated by systemic and cerebral arteries in two different animal models, and suggest that the 480-nm pulsed-dye laser may have an application for the treatment or prophylaxis of cerebral vasospasm.

Calf productivity and its relationship with milk production and reproduction in first-calvers." Australian Journal of Experimental Agriculture 33, no. 5 (1993): 523. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/ea9930523.

Full text
Abstract:
In a 3-year study using 183 Angus and 173 Angus x Friesian first-calf heifers, calf birth weight, growth, and efficiency of production were measured for 3 calving times: April (conventional), March (4 weeks earlier), and May (4 weeks later). Measurements included calving outcome; calf birth weights and weight gains; and liveweight, condition, milk yield, and reproductive performance of first-calving dams. Calves born to Angus or Angus x Friesian dams in March or May, respectively, were 1.2 or 1.5 kg heavier at birth than those born in April and were associated with more protracted, difficult calvings and calf losses. Heavier dams gave birth to heavier calves (partial regression coefficient 0.028; value almost doubled for later born calves). Calves born early grew more slowly (by 0.1 kg/day) than calves born at, or later than, the onset of pasture growth (April). The effect was present until weaning but was especially marked at 50-150 days of age. During this period milk production of the dam and available pasture influenced calf growth. Hence, calves from Angus x Friesian dams grew faster (by 0.12 kg/day) than calves from Angus dams until 150 days of age. Thereafter, the difference in growth rate was halved. There was a positive relationship between both liveweight and condition of the 2 breeds of dam at the start of second joining and the growth rate of their calves up to 100 days of age (faster by 0.02 kg/day for every 10 kg dam liveweight). Angus x Friesian dams produced more milk (by about 2.0 kg/day) than Angus dams, resulting in faster growth (by 0.07-0.1 kg/day) of crossbred calves and an advantage of 27.1 kg over Angus calves at weaning. Calf growth and milk yield of dam were significantly associated at 51-200 days for crossbreds and at 51-100 days for Angus. The better milking ability of the crossbred dams did not fully offset the poorer growth made by calves born early. Few calves were suitable for slaughter as weaners for the domestic market. Later born calves grew fastest, but the reduced second conception rates of their dams in restricted joining periods and the lower age of calves at weaning adversely affected total calf productivity following later calving. Similarly, early-born calves grew more slowly and incurred extra production costs through supplementary feeding of their dams with no advantage demonstrated in the fertility of these first-calvers. Varying the time of calving of first-calf heifers from that of the main herd calving around the break of season is not recommended for beef herds relying mainly on seasonal nutrition from pastures.

Abstract:
Twenty-six peach and six plum cultivars budded to 20–50 cm Ta Tao five or twenty-four interstems on Lovell rootstock were observed in four trials at two locations in South Carolina. The locations were in the Piedmont near Clemson and the Sandhills near Pontiac, S.C. The objective of growing peach cultivars on interstems was to delay scion phenology to reduce risk from late spring freezes. Data from these trials were collected from 1989 to 1996. Average bloom delay for peach cultivars on interstems was significant each year from 1991 through 1996 and ranged from 5 to 9 days later than the noninterstem controls. Bloom of plum cultivars on interstems was not significantly affected. Interstem peach trees had significantly smaller trunk cross-sectional areas and averaged from 32% smaller in 3-year-old trees to 35% in 7-year-old trees. Interstem trees also had fewer lateral vegetative budbreaks (i.e., blind wood). Fruit maturity was significantly delayed on most peach cultivars on interstems. Fruit of early cultivars (90 days past bloom) ripened 2–4 days later on interstems. Likewise, mid-season cultivars ripened 5–6 days later and late season cultivars (>130 days past bloom) 3-4 days later. Fruit size was smaller on interstem trees when trees were either inadequately thinned or drought-stressed.

Abstract:
There is a wealth of evidence for a lifespan penalty when environmental conditions influence an individual's growth trajectory, such that growth rate is accelerated to attain a target size within a limited time period. Given this empirically demonstrated relationship between accelerated growth and lifespan, and the links between lifespan and telomere dynamics, increased telomere loss could underpin this growth–lifespan trade. We experimentally modified the growth trajectory of nestling zebra finches ( Taeniopygia guttata ), inducing a group of nestlings to accelerate their growth between 7 and 15 days of age, the main phase of body growth. We then sequentially measured their telomere length in red blood cells at various time points from 7 days to full adulthood (120 days). Accelerated growth between 7 and 15 days was not associated with a detectable increase in telomere shortening during this period compared with controls. However, only in the treatment group induced to show growth acceleration was the rate of growth during the experimental period positively related to the amount of telomere shortening between 15 and 120 days. Our findings provide evidence of a long-term influence of growth rate on later-life telomere shortening, but only when individuals have accelerated growth in response to environmental circumstances.

Full text
Abstract:
ABSTRACT Ovariectomy of prepubertal rats (9 days of age) eliminates the ability of the opiate peptide FK 33-824 to inhibit LH secretion when tested 19 days later. We have investigated whether this removal of opiate inhibition would modify the LH/FSH response to stimulation with oestradiol benzoate/progesterone priming. Ovariectomy of rats during infancy (9 days after birth) amplifies the stimulatory effects of these steroids on LH/FSH secretion when tested 19 days later. This amplification was not seen in rats ovariectomized before (day 24) or after puberty (day 43) and tested 19 days later. The pituitary content of LH/FSH does not appear to contribute to this phenomenon, though increased responsiveness to injected gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) is clearly involved; ovariectomy at day 9 is considerably more effective than ovariectomy at day 24 of life in enhancing the response to GnRH. We conclude that infantile ovariectomy either removes, or prevents the development of, a hypothalamic inhibitory mechanism which normally modulates the responsiveness of the pituitary to stimulation with GnRH. Abstract:
The impact of early life protein source (whey vs. casein) on short- and long-term glucose homeostasis and adiposity is unknown and was investigated in this study. At the end of the suckling period, non-IUGR (intrauterine growth restriction) and IUGR pups were separated from dams and were randomized into four groups. From age 21–49 days, non-IUGR and IUGR pups were fed ad-libitum chow or a semi-synthetic diet (20% from protein; casein or whey) and from age 50–199 days, all groups were fed ad-libitum chow. Food intake, body composition, glucose, and insulin homeostasis were assessed. Among the chow groups, IUGR had slower growth and higher fasting glucose at age 42 days, as well as higher fasting and AUC glucose at age 192 days relative to non-IUGR. The whey IUGR group had a slower growth rate and higher fasting glycemia in early life (age 21–49 days) and higher HOMA-IR later in life (age 120–122 and 190–192 days) relative to casein IUGR. This study shows the potential advantage of casein relative to whey during weaning on short term energy intake, growth, and glucose homeostasis in an IUGR model and reveals, for the first time, its long term impact on insulin sensitivity, which may have implications for later metabolic health, particularly in small-for-gestational-age populations at risk of type 2 diabetes.

Abstract:
Ozone causes vagally mediated airway hyperreactivity and recruits inflammatory cells, including eosinophils, to lungs, where they mediate ozone-induced hyperreactivity 1 day after exposure but are paradoxically protective 3 days later. We aimed to test the role of newly divided eosinophils in ozone-induced airway hyperreactivity in sensitized and nonsensitized guinea pigs. Nonsensitized and sensitized guinea pigs were treated with 5-bromo-2-deoxyuridine (BrdU) to label newly divided cells and were exposed to air or ozone for 4 h. Later (1 or 3 days later), vagally induced bronchoconstriction was measured, and inflammatory cells were harvested from bone marrow, blood, and bronchoalveolar lavage. Ozone induced eosinophil hematopoiesis. One day after ozone, mature eosinophils dominate the inflammatory response and potentiate vagally induced bronchoconstriction. However, by 3 days, newly divided eosinophils have reached the lungs, where they inhibit ozone-induced airway hyperreactivity because depleting them with antibody to IL-5 or a TNF-α antagonist worsened vagally induced bronchoconstriction. In sensitized guinea pigs, both ozone-induced eosinophil hematopoiesis and subsequent recruitment of newly divided eosinophils to lungs 3 days later failed to occur. Thus mature eosinophils dominated the ozone-induced inflammatory response in sensitized guinea pigs. Depleting these mature eosinophils prevented ozone-induced airway hyperreactivity in sensitized animals. Ozone induces eosinophil hematopoiesis and recruitment to lungs, where 3 days later, newly divided eosinophils attenuate vagally mediated hyperreactivity. Ozone-induced hematopoiesis of beneficial eosinophils is blocked by a TNF-α antagonist or by prior sensitization. In these animals, mature eosinophils are associated with hyperreactivity. Thus interventions targeting eosinophils, although beneficial in atopic individuals, may delay resolution of airway hyperreactivity in nonatopic individuals.

Abstract:
Compared to other countries, the COVID-19 pandemic did not severely affect Australia as measured by total deaths until mid-2021. Though a substantial number of daily confirmed cases (up to 698) were reported during the second wave, most of them were from the southern state of Victoria. This study examined the possible correlations between climate variables and the number of daily confirmed COVID-19 cases in Victoria, Australia, from 25 January to 31 October 2020. Appropriate regression models and cross-correlation diagnostics were used to examine the effect of temperature, rainfall, solar exposure, and ultraviolet index (UVI) with the number of daily confirmed cases. Significant positive associations were identified for solar exposure and maximum and average UVI for confirmed cases one and 19 days later. Negative associations for these variables were found for confirmed cases five days later. Minimum temperature had a significant negative correlation one day later and a positive effect 21 days later. No significant correlation was found for maximum temperature and rainfall. The most significant relationships were found for confirmed cases 19 days after changes in the meteorological variables. A 1% increase in solar exposure, maximum UVI, and average UVI was associated with a 0.31% (95% CI: 0.13 to 0.51), 0.71% (95% CI: 0.43 to 0.98), and 0.63% (95%CI: 0.20 to 1.61) increase 19 days later in the number of confirmed cases, respectively. The implications of these results can be used in the public health management of any possible future events in Australia. It also highlights the significance of considering the climatic variables and seasonality in all kinds of epidemics and pandemics.

Abstract:
Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) is a rare condition that may have a serious outcome because of acute coronary syndrome. The condition especially affects young women. We evaluated a middle-aged male patient with a non-ST segment elevation myocardial infarction caused by multivessel SCAD. The SCAD had occurred in the distal right coronary artery (RCA), the mid left anterior descending artery (LAD), and the distal LAD at the same time. His culprit lesion was in the distal RCA, but the SCAD had progressed more proximally within the RCA 12 days later with no clinical symptoms. We treated the mid LAD with implantation of a drug-eluting stent on admission and the SCAD had not progressed 12 days later. Moreover, the SCAD in the distal RCA and distal LAD healed spontaneously 12 days later. He had no recurrent attack, and all SCAD lesions of the RCA and LAD had completely healed 6 months later. Given that SCAD appears in various forms over the clinical course, a strategy of intervention needs careful consideration.

Abstract:
The influence of an oil contrast medium on fertilization in rabbit oviducts was investigated. The oil contrast medium (Lipiodol-UF) was injected into the catheterized oviducts of anaesthetized animals, and they were mated 1, 3, 5 or 7 days later. When mating took place 1 day after injection, none of the ova that were subsequently recovered were fertilized; the fertilization rates when mating occurred 3, 5 or 7 days after injection of the medium were 78.9, 90 and 100%. Fertilization within the oviduct was, thus, impaired by the injection of oil contrast medium, but appeared to be fully recovered 7 days later.

Abstract:
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to examine when (i.e. after a shorter or longer length of time) organizations should offer an apology or a promise of non-recurrence of a failure to recover trust following a failed service recovery (a double deviation).Design/methodology/approachThis paper reports the results of a pilot study with a convenience sample and two experiments with samples from different populations, students and employees of a financial institution in one study and workers recruited through Mechanical Turk in the other.FindingsAn apology was most effective to recover trust when offered shortly after the double deviation (e.g. Study 1: after two days; Study 2: immediately and after two days), while making a promise was most effective when offered at a later time after the double deviation (e.g. Study 1: after 30 days; Study 2: after 15 days). Consumers consider an apology offered shortly after the double deviation as a sign of integrity and a promise communicated sometime after the double deviation as a sign of competence.Originality/valueThis paper complements prior research that demonstrates the effectiveness of apology and promise as trust recovery tactics. The findings show that managers should carefully consider the time at which they use these tactics to recover trust following a double deviation.

Abstract:
Evaluation of the influence of laser application on osseointegration around implants with different surface characteristics is limited. This study aims to evaluate the influence of low-level lasers on the early stages of osseointegration. Ninety-six external hex implants (3.75 mm × 5.0 mm) were placed in 24 rabbits—one machined and one sandblasted acid-etched per tibia. The rabbits were later divided into the laser group, which received a total dose of 24 J/cm2 of gallium-aluminum-arsenide laser over 15 days, and a control group. At 16 and 30 days after surgery, removal torque and histomorphometric analyses were performed. No statistical differences in removal torque or histomorphometric analyses were verified between laser and control groups regardless of implant surface (P > .05). Time was the only variable presenting significant differences between measurements (P < .05). Low-level laser had no significant short-term effect on bone-to-implant contact and removal torque values regardless of implant surface characteristics.

Abstract:
OBJECTIVE: To report a case of ticlopidine-induced neutropenia occurring 18 days after discontinuation of the drug. CASE SUMMARY: A 68-year-old woman was placed on ticlopidine after a transient ischemic attack. Ten days later the drug was discontinued because the patient developed a rash. Eighteen days later she developed pneumonia and neutropenia, which were believed to be induced by ticlopidine. DISCUSSION: Drug-induced neutropenia is serious and at times life-threatening. Ticlopidine-induced neutropenia has been described in patients receiving the medication. We report neutropenia occurring 18 days after discontinuation of ticlopidine. CONCLUSIONS: Indications for prescribing ticlopidine must be closely followed. Complete blood cell count monitoring is imperative while the patient is receiving the medication. This case suggests that the duration of monitoring after the discontinuation of ticlopidine may need to be longer than the 14 days recommended by the manufacturer.

Abstract:
The effective pollination period was determined in kiwifruit [Actinidia deliciosa (Chev.) Liang and Fergusonl and the factors affecting it were evaluated. The effective pollination period, measured as the capability to set fruit after hand-pollinating flowers of different ages, was 4 days; 5 days after anthesis fruit set decreased and 2 days later it was nil. Pollen tube growth did not appear to he a limiting factor since pollen tubes grew quickly and reached the base of the style 2 days after pollination and reached the ovules 1 day later. Ovules appeared viable for the 7 days following anthesis, and visibly degenerated within the following 3 days. Stigmatic receptivity was determined by the ability to sustain pollen germination after hand pollinating flowers of different ages. The duration of stigmatic receptivity closely fit the effective pollination period determined through fruit set. Thus, it appears that stigma receptivity is the main factor responsible for the short effective pollination period.

Abstract:
The HPLC method for acetamiprid in soil and cowpea was developed. The degradation dynamics of the acetamiprid in the soil and cowpea and the last residue in the cowpea were researched. The method recovery was 81% - 88% and the linear relationship was good from 0.05 to 5μg·mL-1with a CV less than 5%, which could meet the detection requirement. The half-life of the acetamiprid were 3.3 days and 4.1 days, respectively in soil and cowpea. The residue of the acetamiprid in the cowpea was less than 0.5μg·g-14 days later when two times of the recommended dose. The half-life of the acetamiprid was short, which belongs to the easy degradation pesticide. The cowpea was sprayed 3 times, respectively with two times and 2.5 times of the recommended dose, which had a two days interval each time. The results showed that 4 days and 6 days later the acetamiprid residue in the cowpea were less than 0.5μg·g-1.

Abstract:
The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is highly prevalent throughout the population. Although in most cases, the infection has a good prognosis, it can cause severe complications. We report a case of a healthy child with a primary EBV infection that evolved with two rare complications. She first presented in the emergency room with fever and sore throat, and was diagnosed with tonsillitis and medicated with antibiotic. She returned 7 days later for fatigue, vomiting and abdominal pain. The examination revealed tonsillitis, swollen cervical lymph nodes and pain in the right hypochondrium. An abdominal ultrasound was performed, compatible with acute acalculous cholecystitis. She was admitted in the paediatric nursery and medicated with intravenous antibiotics. The EBV serology revealed primary infection. Two days later, she developed cardiogenic shock and had to be transferred to an intensive care unit under mechanical ventilation and inotropics. She was discharged 12 days later, keeping a moderate left ventricular dysfunction.

Abstract:
Abstract Background: In animal models, exposure to general anesthetics induces widespread increases in neuronal apoptosis in the developing brain. Subsequently, abnormalities in brain functioning are found in adulthood, long after the anesthetic exposure. These abnormalities include not only reduced learning abilities but also impaired social behaviors, suggesting pervasive deficits in brain functioning. But the underlying features of these deficits are still largely unknown. Methods: Six-day-old C57BL/6 female mice were exposed to 3% sevoflurane for 6 h with or without hydrogen (1.3%) as part of the carrier gas mixture. At 7–9 weeks of age, they were mated with healthy males. The first day after parturition, the maternal behaviors of dams were evaluated. The survival rate of newborn pups was recorded for 6 days after birth. Results: Female mice that received neonatal exposure to sevoflurane could mate normally and deliver healthy pups similar to controls. But these dams often left the pups scattered in the cage and nurtured them very little, so that about half of the pups died within a couple of days. Yet, these dams did not show any deficits in olfactory or exploratory behaviors. Notably, pups born to sevoflurane-treated dams were successfully fostered when nursed by control dams. Mice coadministered of hydrogen gas with sevoflurane did not exhibit the deficits of maternal behaviors. Conclusion: In an animal model, sevoflurane exposure in the developing brain caused serious impairment of maternal behaviors when fostering their pups, suggesting pervasive impairment of brain functions including innate behavior essential to species survival.
