Abstract:
Boccaccio had proved by his vernacular and Latin prosaic works as well that he merited a place among the three crowns of Italian literature. By De mulieribus claris he created the first collection of women’s biographies in the Western European literature, which work testifies such a complexity worth for analysing. This paper presents the various aspects I needed to apply during the analysis of the common goddesses of Genealogia and De mulieribus – e. g. the problem of the readers, the utilized literary sources, the narrative techniques and even the tradition called Euhemerism – to understand De mulieribus itself and due to these points of view to identify the answers that Boccaccio gave to the challenges of the Medieval and Renaissance interpretational traditions.

Em seu catálogo Sobre as mulheres famosas (De mulieribus claris), escrito entre 1361-1362, Giovanni Boccaccio explora o universo mítico greco-romano, retratando a vida de figuras femininas notáveis (clarae) da Antiguidade. Estudos anteriores sobre o De mulieribus claris tendem a ser marcados por um viés dicotômico, que oscila entre apontar um caráter moralista (cristão) ou “meramente” literário nas biografias. Eruditas “pesquisas de fontes” (Quellenforschungen) – as quais são normalmente associadas à segunda perspectiva – destacam, entre outras fontes clássicas, a obra do poeta Ovídio (43 a.C.-17 d.C.). O objetivo central a que se dedica este artigo é investigar como a poesia do autor romano é aludida em De mulieribus claris, e explorar efeitos de sentido de tal presença no catálogo em estudo. Referências ao texto de Ovídio serão apreciadas, valendo-se de preceitos de teoria Intertextual aplicada às Letras Clássicas, em passagens de três biografias, a saber, Tisbe (XIII), Medeia (XVII) e Safo (XLVII). A observação da relação entre os textos dos autores antigo e moderno nos fornece indícios de como se dá o processo de ressignificação do material da Antiguidade na obra boccacciana, passando, de fato, tanto pela reinterpretação de elementos mitológicos no âmbito de uma perspectiva moral cristã, quanto por movimentos de referenciação que filiariam Boccaccio aos grandes autores da Antiguidade.

All’interno di questa categoria, il certaldese narra brevemente il talento di due pittrici che vissero nella Grecia dell’Antichità: Tamari, figlia di Micone (capitolo LVI), e Irene, figlia di Cratino (LIX). Il presente articolo – primo di due studi che prenderanno in analisi le due vite suddette – studia le particolarità del capitolo dedicato a Tamari (LVI) analizzando le fonti utilizzate dall’autore e la struttura della vita, che viene paragonata agli altri modelli presenti nella silloge, sia per quanto riguarda l’estensione, sia rispetto ai motivi per i quali eccelse la protagonista.

The last of the one hundred and six chapters conforming Boccaccio’s De mulieribus claris is devoted to queen Joanna of Naples. The addition of this life implies a certain degree of anomaly in the tradition of exemplary literature because of two reasons. Firstly, the Angevin sovereign was in her early thirties when the author finished the composition of his collection and, secondly, because the description of the monarch’s life that Boccaccio provides can be said far from objective narration and much closer to a propagandistic portrait of the Neapolitan queen. L’ultimo dei centosei capitoli del De mulieribus claris di Boccaccio è consacrato alla regina Giovanna di Napoli. Quest’inclusione comporta un’anomalia nella topica della letteratura esemplare per due motivi. Per cominciare, la sovrana angioina era poco più che trentenne quando il certaldese finì la stesura della sua silloge e, in secondo luogo, perché la versione della vita della monarca che l’autore fornisce è ben lungi da poter essere considerata una narrazione oggettiva, avvicinandosi molto di più a un ritratto propagandistico della regina partenopea. In questo articolo si analizzano queste particolarità della vita di Giovanna e si indaga nei motivi che potrebbero aver portato Boccaccio a configurare in questo modo il capitolo di chiusura della sua raccolta sulle donne celebri.

Boccaccio, standing between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, uses specific methods of systematization and techniques when he decides to write (even many times if necessary) the biographies of the goddesses of Greco-Roman mythology. What influences his methods? Is it important which description of a goddess into which work of his – Genealogia deorum gentilium or De mulieribus claris or both – he intends to insert? What kind of literary sources does he rely on while writing these biographies? My paper starts a reckless „Minerva-counting” and describes the problem through the figure of one of the most important goddesses of the ancient culture.

Abstract:
Much of the twentieth-century research carried out on the reception of Boccaccio in medieval and Renaissance Italy has focused on the Decameron to the exclusion of all other works. This thesis puts existing research into context by considering two additional works by Boccaccio alongside the Decameron, and by using an innovative methodology to analyse the evidence for reception in Italy before 1520. The Teseida and De mulieribus differ sufficiently from the Decameron in terms of their influences, style, and date of composition to offer a broader view of Boccaccio's fortuna. The thesis is divided into two parts, each reflecting a different methodological approach, the theoretical implications of which are discussed in some detail in the introduction. Part I analyses critical responses found in a wide range of sources, such as poetry, letters, and biographies. The discussion opens with a consideration of the authorial image which Boccaccio projected in his literary works and letters (Chapter 1), followed by an evaluation of the responses of Boccaccio's acquaintances(Chapter 2 ), and of the responses of those that had no personal contact with Boccaccio( Chapter 3 ), to this projected authorial persona. In Part II I uncover responses to Boccaccio made by a wider section of the reading public, using the evidence for reception inherent in the physical structure and presentation of books. Chapter 4 acts as an introduction to the second part of the thesis, defining and outlining the significance of the three categories of evidence used: materiality, paratexts, and traces of reading. Chapter 5 complements the first chapter by evaluating how the presentation of Boccaccio's autograph manuscripts reflects his intended readership. In Chapters 6-8 I proceed to discuss the reception of the Teseida, Decameron, and De mulieribus, focusing on the physical structure and presentation of a sample of manuscripts and printed books containing these texts. The final conclusion draws together Parts I and II, illustrating the complementary nature of the evidence discussed in each part of the thesis. My research challenges commonly held views about the reception of the Decameron, and offers new insights into the fortuna of the Teselda and De mulieribus in a period marked by changing, and often conflicting, cultural and intellectual concerns, and as manuscript culture gave way to print. The Appendices list the locations of manuscripts I have viewed, provide bibliographic descriptions of the editions of the Teselda, Decameron, and De mulieribus printed before 1520, and offer transcriptions of paratexts from editions of each work.

Resumo: Nossa pesquisa apresenta uma tradução parcial do De Claris Mulieribus, catálogo de biografias femininas escrito por Giovanni Boccaccio entre 1361-1362. A tradução, que é a primeira da obra no Brasil, compreende Dedicatória, Proêmio e as 40 primeiras biografias constantes da obra, e é acompanhada de um estudo introdutório, composto por três capítulos. O primeiro capítulo visa oferecer breves dados a respeito da formação do autor certaldense e do ambiente cultural de seus leitores coevos - com destaque à sua relação com a literatura greco-romana, bem como um panorama de sua produção, tanto vernácula quanto latina. No segundo capítulo, por sua vez, buscamos localizar a obra em apreço dentre as produções latinas boccaccianas, e discorrer sobre sua estrutura e composição. Por fim, no Capítulo III, guiando-nos por metodologia intertextual, dedicamo-nos brevemente à relação do texto da obra De Claris com outros textos. Nesse âmbito, como amostra da riqueza de sentidos, uma análise de biografias boccaccianas (Tisbe XIII, e Medeia XVII) será elaborada a partir de sua relação com excertos de Ovídio
Abstract: Our research presents a partial translation of De Claris Mulieribus, a collection of female biographies written by Giovanni Boccaccio between 1361-1362. The present translation, which is the very first one of its kind in Brazil, comprises Dedication, Preface and the first 40 biographies contained in his work, and it is followed by an introductory study composed of three chapters. The first chapter aims to provide concise data regarding the formation of the Italian author from Certaldo and the cultural environment of his coeval readers, focusing on his relation with the Greco-Roman literature, as well as an overview of his production, both vernacular and Latin. In the second chapter, we intended to position the work in appreciation within Boccaccian's Latin productions, and also to consider its structure and composition. Finally, in Chapter III, guided by intertextual methodology, we had briefly dedicated ourselves to the relation of the text of De Claris work with other texts. In this scope, as an illustration of the richness of meanings, an analysis of the Boccaccio's biographies (Thisbe XIII and Medea XVII) will be elaborated from its relation with excerpts from Ovid

The volume ‘Intorno a Boccaccio/Boccaccio e dintorni 2018’ is the outcome of the international seminar held in Certaldo on September 6 and 7, 2018, promoted by the ENGB National Association (Ente Nazionale Giovanni Boccaccio) now at its fifth edition. The seminar is held annually and was born with the intent to giving voice to young scholars, who are invited to present their research, either concluded or current. The volume, alongside contributions on the Decameron, stands out for its attention towards other Latin and vulgar works by Boccaccio (Teseida, Genealogia deorum gentilium, De mulieribus claris, Epistolae) and for two contributions focused on the iconography of Decameron and Teseida.

Giovanni Sabadino degli Arienti’s Gynevera de le clare donne, a manuscript collection of 31 female biographies, completed in early 1492, aimed to defend, and even to normalize, the exercise of political authority by elite women. Based loosely on Giovanni Boccaccio’s De mulieribus claris, but written in Italian, not Latin, it departed radically from its model by excluding women who had acquired notoriety through wickedness or been undone by the supposedly innate failings of their sex. Instead, it focused on those who had achieved worldly renown through remarkable, but always virtuous, conduct. This essay analyzes the cultural and political context of this text and why it found favor with women such as the young Isabella d’Este, marchioness of Mantua.

In creating her own particular style and legitimizing her status as a literary woman, a reflection on the female condition emerges from her work. This chapter considers two key texts: Cité des dames and Epistre Othea. The author's aim in the latter may not initially seem to be the exploration of women's dignification, since we are dealing with a text in which a goddess, called Othéa, teaches the young Hector morality. The creation of a new female mythological figure, however, establishing a parallel with Plutarch, as well as the positive reappraisal of some mythological characters reveals that Epistre Othea implicitly proposes a reflection on female rehabilitation. The introduction into this corpus of Ovide moralisé and the 15th century translation of Boccaccio's De mulieribus claris, which served as a reference for Pizan, is therefore highly significant.
