Abstract: This study conducts the topoanalysis of the Italian work Così parlò Bellavista: Napoli, amore e libertà [Thus Spoken Bellavista: Naples, love and liberty], published in 1977, by the Italian writer Luciano de Crescenzo. In this novel, the author explores Naples through the philosophical observations of the philosophy teacher Gennaro Bellavista, along with his friends and Neapolitan countrymen. Therefore, we analyzed the literary configuration of the city through the denotative and connotative spaces present in the dialogues of the characters. Moreover, as Bellavista exacerbates the qualities of Naples, we researched how the mythic aspect and the utopian aspect are applied in the teacher's discourse about the city. Furthermore, we studied how the presence of the Philosophy in the structure of the work, through the platonic dialogues and in the Bellavista's arguments, is a way of setting up the city and its inhabitants. We also analyzed how the hybridity of the work, namely the presence of textual genres from oral tradition with humorous nature, is another way of exploring the city while also characterizing it through laughter. For such investigations, we mainly used the theoretical reflections of Brandão (2013) and Borges Filho (2007) related to space. For the content about Naples, we based our analysis on the works of Palumbo, Ponticello (2014) and D'ambrosio (s / d). Regarding the philosophy, our research was mainly guided by Souza (2018) and De Crescenzo (2012). Aspects abou... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)
I pensieri di Bellavista is a work of Luciano De Crescenzo, contemporary italian author, composed of 365 aphorisms. These aphorisms are endowed with magnificent lightness and profundity. In order to reach such lightness effect, De Crescenzo summons his knowledge, accumulated through his novelist, philosopher, humorist and film maker careers, as well through his Neapolitan citizenship. Besides that, he resorts to irony, figure of speech which, through various ways, had integrated itself to the Neapolitan culture. Means such as satire and humor also supports the brief narratives in the speech of professor Don Gennaro Bellavista. Not only linguistic means are summoned to ground De Crescenzo in the building of the lightness mood that involves this work, the author also evokes the Epicurean philosophy, the classic Taoist values and the Neapolitan culture itself to the same purpose. The present research verifies how the aphorisms are constructed, mostly, in the linguistic and semantic structuration, to investigate how the lightness effect in each of them is created.

Full textCollaborative music making on the Internet is not a new phenomenon, but no applications have yet caught on with the vast number of laptop and bedroom studio musicians active today. This is strange considering the inherent social and interactive nature of music, especially amongst trends like Web 2.0 where collaboration and user-generated data is key. In this paper I study the problems these applications face, and why they do not have a greater appeal to musicians. With the results I develop and evaluate my own framework, known as Crescendo Online: a multi-user sequencing and modular synthesis environment, intended to pave the way for a new type of online music creation platform.

Reinforcement Learning (RL) algorithms has been widely used for the construction of autonomous agents. Inspired by the behavior of animal learning, RL is a paradigm that serves as basis for algorithms that learn by trial and error. Despite its popularity, solid mathematical foundation and theoretical guarantee of convergence to an optimal solution, RL have applicability constraints on tasks where the state space is too large. By aggregating similar states one can reduce the state space size. Once reduced, the problem can be solved using traditional RL algorithms. The main question that arises here is how to realize the aggregation, so on the one hand, you can get a “good” representation of the state space, and on the other hand, the model performance does not degrade. This is one of the challenges of RL. This thesis proposes aggregation of similar states, through the use of Fritzke’s selforganizing map, in order to reduce the state space. Most research involving the use of algorithms that discretize the state space seek to improve the right time for the partition of the state space, where to partition and when to stop, while the RL algorithms remains unchanged. These works often result in algorithms that do not converge on certain problems or have a “weak” learning capacity. This work contributes showing the fragility of these algorithms while presents an effective solution to the problem. This thesis compares the proposed algorithm with four RL algorithms namely: Tile Coding (TC), Temporal Difference Adaptive Vector Quantization (TD-AVQ), Uniform Discretization (DU) and Interpolating Growing Neural Gas Q-learning (IGNG-Q). The experiments show that the proposed algorithm was able to find the solution on five testbed environments. Compared with TC, the proposed algorithm was able to provide a reduction in memory usage of 88%, 87%, 98% and 97% in the environments Continuous Maze, Slow Puddle World, Mountain Car and Acrobot respectively. In the test, the proposed algorithm was the only capable to found an solution for the environments Continuous Maze and Slow Puddle World. This thesis also shows that the RL algorithm proposed is more suitable for the use in discretized environments than Q(λ). The application of TD(nλ) with DU was able to show convergence in problems where Q(λ) failed. The final product of this thesis is a robust algorithm able to find in time a solution for all specified test environments.

Full textThe Shi’a Crescent is a term used to refer to a region spanning three major countries: Iraq, Lebanon, and Iran. These countries each have a large and active population of Shi’a. Shi’a is one of the two main Islamic sects. The thesis finds the formation of a politically unified Shi’a crescent unlikely. It highlights the importance to regard Shi’a identity as a dynamic mechanism that can change the political stage in the Middle East. The study focused on the three intended countries of the proposed crescent. Each was examined thoroughly and independently, in order to compare and contrast common concerns, interest, and circumstances that can lead to a possible unity of Shi’a in the region. Therefore, the research focused on three factors: sociopolitical representation, socioeconomic oppression, and the Shi’a identity. A greater emphasis is given to the reasons that lead Shi’a to maintain a distinct identity, rather than assimilating nationally. Because, maintaining this identity, allows for bids for support and power beyond the state level. It is necessary for the United States to recognize that the regional uses of Shi’a identity have implications for the stability of the states.
