Abstract:
Two counter-examples stand against the Aristotelian thesis of De interpretatione 6 that negation principally means denial: Neither can the negation of general propositions be understood as denial, nor is this possible in the case of propositions whose grammatical subject is an empty singular term. While the first counter-example can be easily refuted through the analysis which Aristotle gives of general propositions in De interpretatione 7, the second counter-example seems to be able to invoke Categoriae 10. According to the usual view of Categoriae 10, Aristotle himself delivers examples for negations which cannot be understood as denials. The present essay holds this interpretation to be incorrect, and attempts to show with reference to indexical propositions and an Aristotelian two-term concept of truth that even these negations are to be understood as denials. Specifically, it is argued that this errant interpretation relies upon a reading of the Aristotelian text through a Russellian lens.

Abstract:

Aristotles refusal of causal determinism in Metaphysics E3/K8 by means of the thesis that not every event is necessitated entails (given the conception put forward in Categories 5 that a proposition is either true or false according to its either corresponding or not corresponding at a given time to a state of affairs at that same given time) his refusal of logical determinism in De Interpretatione 9 by means of the thesis that propositions about future contingent events are neither true nor false ex ante facto but become either true or false afterwards. Aristotles commitment to non-necessitated events stems, it is argued, from his commitment to the notion of deliberation. This work includes a translation, with commentary, of De Interpretatione 9.

Abstract:
This dissertation is a study of the process through which Tibetan Buddhist philosophy, by synthesizing doctrines and texts into consistent models, integrates views of reality within doctrinal and soteriological systems. It consists of an analysis of the most fundamental doctrinal tension found in the Tibetan tradition, namely the apparent inconsistency of doctrines belonging to the negative Mādhyamika and to the more affirmative Yogācāra trends of Mahāyāna Buddhism. As a case study aiming to provide a first systematic examination of that problematic, the dissertation surveys and analyzes Tibetan interpretation of the set of texts referred to as the Five Treatises of Maitreya (byams chos sde lnga), and at the way those interpretations deal with the doctrinal tensions found in that set of text. In addition to providing a recension of major interpretations of the Five Treatises developed between 1100 and 1500, a detailed account is given of the model of interpretation given by gSer mdog Paṇ chen Śākya mchog ldan, a famous teacher of the Sa skya school of Tibetan Buddhism. When confronted with the features of other interpretations, Śākya mchog ldan's interpretation of the Five Treatises, which proceeds primarily by allowing a plurality of views to be maintained even at the level of definitive meaning, , provides us with a new insight in the Tibetan philosophical tradition: the most fundamental dimension of philosophical reconciliation of doctrinal views, especially of the kind found in the Five Treatises, can be described as pertaining to textual hermeneutics. Moreover, Śākya mchog ldan's contribution to that domain of Buddhist thought, by placing hermeneutics at the very centre of his system of Buddhist doctrine and practice, suggests that hermeneutics is a fundamental category of all Buddhist philosophical debates, and that it should be part of any attempt to understand the Tibetan philosophical tradition.

"Improving and assessing students' line graph interpretations : the case of the graph-as-picture interpretation." Thesis, University of Sussex, 2015. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/53220/.

Full text
Abstract:
The “graph-as-picture misconception” (GAPM) occurs when an abstract representation (e.g., a line graph) is interpreted as a picture of an object (e.g., a mountain). Previous research on students' line graph interpretations has focused on secondary school level and above, thus this research extends the investigation of the GAPM to primary school level. Particularly, it investigates: which type of environment is more effective for improving young students' line graph interpretations; and how can be assessed their interpretations. A pilot study involved an improved version of Janvier's (1978) paper-and-pencil tasks (to create an interactive learning environment) and it investigated how to incorporate a card-sort task (to assess students' interpretations). Different touch-screen technologies were considered too. Two experiments were conducted. In experiment one, 37 participants (third to sixth year) were assessed in their graphical knowledge through a picture/diagram card-sort task and a “pictorial group” was formed using participants' interpretations. During the intervention, students performed an active or passive mode of a Racing Car activity in which they moved or watched a car along a track while its speed/distance graph was plotted concurrently alongside. The results suggested that a wide variety of pictorial interpretations exist and students seemed to benefit from the active modality. In experiment two, 38 fifth-year students performed different assessment tests. Extending experiment one, a “drawing the graph” mode and its passive modality were included. In that mode, students modified a plotted line of a speed/distance graph, which was used by the system to race a car along a track. Previous results were not confirmed: only students under the “drawing the graph” modality (including the “pictorial group”) significantly improved their interpretations; and different assessment tests seemed better to observe students' various interpretations. In conclusion, a learning environment that allows interaction with the representation could potentially improve students' interpretations, which might be better assessed through a rich set of tests.

Abstract:
AbstractInterpretation methods constitute a foundation of termination analysis for term rewriting. From time to time remarkable instances of interpretation methods appeared, such as polynomial interpretations, matrix interpretations, arctic interpretations, and their variants. In this paper we introduce a general framework, the multi-dimensional interpretation method, that subsumes these variants as well as many previously unknown interpretation methods as instances. Employing the notion of derivers, we prove the soundness of the proposed method in an elegant way. We implement the proposed method in the termination prover and verify its significance through experiments.

Abstract:
In this article the author, after briefly summarizing different interpretations of the Renaissance, shortly outlines some modes that have characterized the reception and study of Humanism and the Renaissance in Slavic countries. She then illustrates the content of the essays gathered in two recent histories of Ukrainian literature , with a special focus on the novelty of their interpretative approach. The author argues the importance of abandoning the old national-driven interpretation, in favor of the adoption of an areal and supranational point of view which allows the analysis of related cultural phenomena in a wider perspective.

Abstract:
The majority of geosteering operations rely on traditional shallow sensing logging tools as sources of information. Many such operations rely on stratigraphic-based steering when the logs from the drilled well are matched to logs from an offset well by modifying the lateral shape of stratigraphy. The match of the logs indicates a plausible interpretation, but due to the scarcity of log data in many situations, this interpretation is not unique. In manual workflows maintaining several likely interpretations is not realistic and in automated workflows, multiple interpretations are seldom used. We describe a deep neural network (DNN) that outputs a selected number of stratigraphic interpretations using a single evaluation of the input log data in two milliseconds. The input data defined prior to training consists of one or several log pairs consisting of one current lateral and one offset-well log. For each of the interpretations, the DNN also estimates the respective probability and can be configured to produce likely ahead-of-data predictions of the geology, which are based on the data mismatches and the likelihood of geological configurations with respect to the training dataset. The described probabilistic interpretation and prediction is enabled by the supervised training of a mixture density DNN (MDN) with a stable multiple-trajectory-prediction loss function. In this paper, we apply the MDN for the sequential interpretation of well logs. We use the interpretations and the probabilities from the previous interpretation step as starting points for the probabilistic interpretations and predictions for the current step. We avoid the curse of dimensionality by discarding the unlikely starting points. The batchable MDN evaluation enables tracking of hundreds of solutions while still maintaining sub-second performance, compared to minute(s) reported in other recent papers. The performance of the method is verified on synthetic test data as well as the realistic well data from the Geosteering World Cup 2020 (based on the Middle Woodford formation, located in the South Central Oklahoma Oil Province in the United States) and stratigraphic configurations provided by geologists. In all cases, the method manages to capture likely interpretations. At the same time, the accuracy of predictions deteriorates for the configurations which were not typical for the training dataset.

Probabilistic interpretations consist of a set of interpretations with a shared domain and a measure assigning a probability to each interpretation. Such structures can be obtained as results of repeated experiments, e.g., in biology, psychology, medicine, etc. A translation between probabilistic and crisp description logics is introduced and then utilised to reduce the construction of a base of general concept inclusions of a probabilistic interpretation to the crisp case for which a method for the axiomatisation of a base of GCIs is well-known.

Abstract:
Review question / Objective: The aim of this systematic review is to compare the accuracy of artificial intelligence algorithms with radiologist panels in CT interpretation in covid-19. Condition being studied: COVID-19 disease was reported as the cause of the outbreak of pneumonia at the end of 2019. One of the main complications of COVID-19 is pulmonary involvement which could be diagnosed by CT-scan dominantly. Because of the increasing rate of these patients along with considering patients in remote areas, CT interpretations are a heavy burden on radiologists. Therefore artificial intelligence algorithms have become critical and time-saving systems in decision-making for these patients.
