This introduction to the special issue proposes that two discrete nineteenth-century histories of opium – a literary history, initiated by the drug confessions of De Quincey, and a colonial history, exemplified by the commercial activities of the East India Company (in which Thomas Love Peacock participated) in cultivating opium in Bengal for export to China, leading to the first Opium War – are common elements in a nineteenth-century ‘opium complex’, a set of interlocking practices of individuals and (quasi)state actors, extending across the globe. Abstract Presence is a central yet controversial topic in the study of performing arts and theatrical traditions, where the notion of ‘stage presence’ is generally understood as the performer’s ability to enchant the audience’s attention. How do dancers relate to the idea of presence in performance, and how do they understand, enact, and perform presence in their artistic work and practices? In this article I offer an investigation into presence’s variations in three different dance practices and choreographic contexts: the case of the Ballet National de Marseille during the staging of Emio Gr

In a report issued in 1994, the Jenkins Committee advocated the integration of managerial statistics, which could be used to assess the efficiency and effectiveness of a firm's management, into financial statements. This study traces the development, and subsequent demise, of similar managerial information within the financial statements of the Quincy Mining Company in the nineteenth century. Two contemporary models for financial disclosure are developed for comparative purposes and it is concluded that the Quincy Mining Company intentionally restricted the information available to shareholder

AbstractWe review old and new observational data for Stephan’s Quintet (SQ), the most famous compact galaxy group. Recently obtained multi-wavelength data has helped to clarify the past and present evolutionary history of this group. If SQ is typical of the compact group phenomenon, then: 1) the groups evolve slowly, resisting merging, due to the injection of energy from high velocity intruders and 2) show low levels of enhanced star formation because individual component ISM’s are quickly stripped via intruder collisions with resultant gas either too hot or cold/diffuse to form many stars. Abstract:
In this article Professor Hyde examines in detail the use of industrial spies at a large Michigan copper mine in the early twentieth century. While many historians have argued that labor spies were powerful weapons effectively used by employers in their struggles with workers, Hyde finds in his case study of the Quincy Mining Company that spies were seldom useful in providing important labor intelligence. Instead, they inadvertently provided top management with valuable information about underground working conditions and the performance of foremen and petty bosses.

In 1888, the Quincy Mining Company changed its payroll accounting practices. Although efficiency was almost certainly a contributing factor, the nature and timing of this accounting innovation cannot be fully explained by efficiency alone. Instead, this paper attributes the new procedures to the transformation of American labor that characterized the last part of the 19th century. It is argued that the accounting changes reflect a realignment of the organizational relationship between management and labor. Compact groups are small, relatively isolated, systems of galaxies with projected separations comparable to the diameters of the galaxies themselves. Two well-known examples are Stephan’s Quintet (Stephan, 1877) and Seyfert’s Sextet (Seyfert 1948a,b). In groups such as these, the apparent space density of galaxies approaches 106 Mpc-3, denser even than the cores of rich clusters. The apparent unlikeliness of the chance occurance of such tight groupings lead Ambartsumyan (1958, 1975) to conclude that compact groups must be physically dense systems. This historical study examines the evolution of the accounting system of the Quincy Mining Company between 1846 and 1900. The external financial reporting practices and internal accounting procedures of the firm are defined and interpreted in the context of three time periods that portray the formation, growth and maturation of the firm. Each period reflects unique economic and social conditions that are associated with changes in the firm's accounting system. It narrates the history of opium, which was known as a painkiller and sleep aid since ancient times. In the nineteenth century, figures like De Quincey and Samuel Taylor Coleridge marked the shift of opium from a medicine to a recreational drug. Opium, like other intoxicants, altered social relations, raised concerns about its physical and mental effects, and, due to its Asian origins, sparked fears of
