Abstract:
Hugh of St Victor’s De tribus diebus is a difficult work to classify. Strictly speaking, it is neither an hexaemeral commentary nor a cosmological treatise, although it bears affinities to both these types of literature. It is not exactly a mystical work either, despite its stated intention of leading the reader through the visibilia of creation to the invisibilia of the triune God. In some of the surviving manuscripts, it is attached to the Didascalicon de studio legendi, and in Migne’s Patrologia latina it appears as the liber septimus of that work. In this paper, I will argue that the Twelfth Century spiritually -oriented texts present an important, but often neglected instance of natural theology. My analysis will show that in the texts of Hugh of St. Victor (d. 1141) and his student Richard of St. Victor (d. 1173) we find a Christian Neo-Platonist variant of natural theology. The elements of natural theology form a central part of their larger spiritual programmes, which in turn are meant to guide the human being in her ascent into divine realities and thereby offer immediate experience of the presence of God. Background Type 2 diabetes is a common disease and the prevalence has increased in large parts of the world. In treatment of diabetes the type of diet is of great importance considering metabolic factors such as glucose level and blood lipids. Which diet that is most beneficial to avoid diabetic complications has been heavily debated in recent decades. This thesis is based on two clinical studies designed to compare the effects of different macronutrients. Methods A clinical trial was designed to compare a low-carbohydrate diet (LCD) to a low-fat diet (LFD) in treatment of patients with type 2

Abstract:
This chapter is devoted to Max Eastman’s tempestuous relationship with the radical actress Florence Deshon (Florence Danks, 1893–1922). On behalf of the People’s Council of America for Democracy and Terms of Peace, Max lectures at great personal risk to large audiences across the nation against American involvement in World War I. Along with fellow contributors to The Masses, he survives two trials for obstructing the military recruitment effort and founds The Liberator, with Crystal as co-editor. He pays tribute to Deshon in a second volume of poetry, Colors of Life (1918), lives with her in Croton, and, after her move to Hollywood, bombards her with love letters. During a visit he introduces her to Charlie Chaplin as well as to Margrethe Mather, who takes significant photographs of Deshon and Max. Florence has an affair with Chaplin, while Max takes up with the dancer Lisa Duncan. Frustrated with Hollywood and Max, Deshon returns to New York, where she dies, likely by her own hand, on February 4, 1922. Max’s book on The Sense of Humor is dedicated to Deshon and evokes her memorable smile.

Abstract:
Project Health is a relatively new dissonance-based obesity prevention program that can be easily and inexpensively disseminated. Project Health borrows some successful ideas from the Body Project, incorporating dissonance induction techniques to prompt young women and men to make small incremental and sustainable changes to their diets and physical activity. Because obesity is a national epidemic, with an estimated 65% of US adults either overweight or obese, increased attention is being paid to this prevention focus. Large randomized trials are needed to assess whether this program significantly reduces increases in BMI and the incidence of obesity, which have been elusive outcomes for most obesity prevention programs.

Abstract:
The Mississippi River Delta between A.D. 1400 and 1600 was a resource-rich area with a large variety of domestic and wild resources, allowing Mississippian people to be better nourished than many. Yet community-level hierarchies may have been a major factor structuring biological stress across the landscape. Ross-Stallings compares health status from human remains from the Hollywood site (a high-status mound center) and the Flowers #3 site (a low-ranked satellite of the Hollywood center). Greater prevalence of biological stress and poorer diets are found among the people of the satellite settlement, which reflected differential access to resources. This was further underscored by an extractive economic relationship, as the Hollywood chiefs likely siphoned off various forms of tribute in the form of food from their subaltern neighbors.

Now a vocal anticommunist, Max condemns McCarthy but not the idea behind McCarthyism and joins the editorial board of William Buckley’s National Review. Abstract:
The causal basis of the established CVD and type 2 diabetes risk factors rests mainly on cohort studies, sometimes with supplementary data from trials, Mendelian randomization studies, and experiments in animals. In South Asian populations, specifically, the direct evidence is limited but the associations between risk factors and disease outcomes are generally as expected. The lifestyle-related risk factors can be grouped into those where an excess is a problem (e.g. diets leading to adiposity or a high glycaemic load) and those where a deficit is a problem (e.g. insufficient physical activity). These kinds of risk factors, particularly in the context of adverse socio-economic circumstances, provide an excellent basis for causal thinking. So far, even combined with a wide range of biochemical and physiological risk factors, however, such factors are insufficient, though necessary, parts of a convincing explanation for the excess of DM2 and CVD in South Asians.

William Holland Thomas, whose father dies before he is born, is adopted by a Cherokee chief, Yonaguska. Upon his deathbed, the chief names Thomas-a white man-as the new chief of the eastern band of Cherokee. He becomes a fierce advocate for the Cherokee, insuring that they own the land on which they live. Late in life he marries Sarah Love, the much younger daughter of his best friend. The Cherokee declare war on the United States-which marched so many of their tribe away form their ancestral lands along the Trail of Tears. Full text
Abstract:
One Health is a principle that takes into account the interactions of humans, animals, the surrounding environment, and how they affect each other. In order to examine this concept in an experimental paradigm, the effects and benefits of wild Alaskan blueberries were compared to those from the continental United States (Lower-48 states) in human and animal studies. Blueberries have been hailed as a superfood for years now due to their high antioxidant levels and the positive effects they have on cardiovascular health and overall health and well-being. We hypothesize that although they are both beneficial, wild Alaskan blueberries have a greater positive effect on health and well-being than those from the lower 48. First, teachers and staff at the Anne Wien Elementary School in Fairbanks Alaska were provided with Alaskan and Lower-48 blueberries and asked to log the effects each coded sample had on their mental and physical health compared to a 5-day control period without blueberries. There was a significant stepwise positive effect of respondents reporting higher self-ratings of well-being overall. Alaskan blueberries significantly improved self-ratings of well-being compared to those from Lower-48 blueberries, albeit those blueberries did improve well-being compared to no blueberries. This experiment was replicated at a control site contemporaneously. The following year it was also replicated by participating teachers and staff at William S. Hackett Middle School in Albany, New York, as well as a control site. Further, lab rats, whose diets were supplemented with with Alaskan blueberries, performed better in exploratory and cognitive tests than did rats whose diets were supplemented with Lower-48 blueberries (who, similar to the previous trials, performed better than rats whose diets had not been supplemented at all). These findings suggest that blueberries have an overall positive effect on self-rated wellness in people and cognitive performance in lab rats and that Alaskan blueberries have a particularly greater and more beneficial effect. Whether this is due to greater antioxidant effects associated with higher altitude or fewer endocrine-disrupting contaminants in Alaska compared to the Lower-48 States is unknown and subject to ongoing investigation.

High-speed machining (HSM) provides a new dimension to machining parts in hard steel because it eliminates intermediate processes and minimizes hand-finishing operations. Lead times and overall manufacturing costs are reduced, but the potential benefits can only be realized when the high-speed processes are implemented correctly.
