Lystopad, Iryna. "Un platonisme original au XIIe siècle : métaphysique pluraliste et théologie trinitaire dans le De unitate d'Achard de Saint-Victor." Thesis, Paris, EPHE, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016EPHE5105/document.
Full textThe main goal of this dissertation is to describe how Achard of Saint-Victor uses Medio and Neoplatonic doctrines in his treatise De unitate et pluralitate creaturarum in order to answer the question about unity and plurality of God and his creatures. This will lead to a better comprehension of the role of platonic metaphysics in the doctrine of the school of St. Victor despite the weak presence of Plato’s heritage in the XIIth century. In the first part of the thesis, I introduce Achard’s philosophy and the paleographical and philological problems posed by the only manuscript of the De unitate. Then I consider the elements of the treatise (questions, doctrines, notions) which were borrowed from Middle Platonism and Neoplatonism. The two other parts are dedicated to the examination of the possibility of a plurality in God (persons and reasons in the Word of God) and in the world (as it is conceived by God through form-prototypes). In each part, I examine the way that main thinkers of Late Antiquity and High Middle Ages (Apuleius, Augustin, Chalcidius, Boethius, Erigena) and the Victorins (Hugues and Richard) absorbed the platonic doctrines described in the first part of my dissertation. At the end of each part, I propose the reconstruction of Achard’s development of those doctrines. This dissertation contributes to two problems of the history of philosophy: what Platonic doctrines and sources were received in the XIIth century and what is the place of the Platonic heritage in Victorin thought. The philosophical problems of the multiplication of intelligible and sensible objects, of the definition of things and of the identity of beings are also addressed

Full textIn my thesis I defined a twisting of Kazhdan's property (T) and of the Baum-Connes conjecture by some non-unitary finite dimensional representations. Let G be a locally compact group and (p,V) be a finite dimensional representation of G. In Chapter 1, when p is irreducible, we consider tensor products of p by irreducible unitary representations of G to define a twisting of property (T). We introduce two Banach algebras, A(p,G) and A_r(p,G), analogous to the C*-group algebras C*(G) and C*_r(G), and we define property (T) twisted by p in terms of A(p, G). We then show that most of real semi-simple Lie groups verifying property (T) have property (T) twisted by any irreducible finite dimensional representation. In Chapter 2 and 3 we compute the K-theory of these "twisted" group algebras. To do these we define an assembly map defined on the left part of the Baum-Connes morphism, KAtop(G), and with image in the K-theory of A_r(p,G). We then prove that these twisted Baum-Connes map is an isomorphism for a large class of groups verifying the Baum-Connes conjecture. Finally, in Chapter 4 we show that the tensor product by p defines a morphism from A(p,G) to the tensor product of C*_r(G) and End(V) and that these induces a group morphism between K(A(p,G)) and K(C*_r(G)). We then define an action of the finite dimensional representation ring of G on KAtop(G) that is compatible with the tensor product by p and with the twisted Baum-Connes map. This enables us to compute the above morphism on the image of the twisted assembly map

Full textThe hippocampus is well known to play a key role in spatial information processing as shown by the existence of place cells. Such cells are active when the animal occupies particular locations in particular behavioural contexts. However, little evidence has been found in support of the hypothesis that the hippocampus could be involved in the generation of navigation paths and coding of spatial goals. On the other hand, the prefrontal cortex, in line with its role in planning, could be a key structure in the mechanisms involved in goal-directed behaviour. The objective of the research carried out during this thesis is thus to attempt to understand how these two structures (hippocampus and prefrontal cortex) take part in the emergence of goal-directed behaviour. In a first study, we show that prefrontal cortex neurons recorded while the animal performed a goal-oriented navigation task, display spatio-selective activity, especially at locations with a high motivational value. In a second study, we show that hippocampal place cells recorded in animals trained in the same goal navigation task do have a goal firing pattern, i. E. Out-of-field goal related activity, that is time-locked to particular phases of the task. This kind of signal could serve for path planning in combination with prefrontal neurons activity. In the last study, we present recent data that deal with the interactions between these two structures in the same task, looking for particular modulations of hippocampal place cells activity after prefrontal inactivation. .

Full textCurrently, industrial-strength software development usually relies on unit testing or unitproof in order to ensure high-level requirements. Combining these techniques has already beendemonstrated more effective than using one of them alone. The verification engineer is yetnot been to combine these techniques because of the lack of a common notion of coverage fortesting and proving. Defining such a notion is the main objective of this thesis. We introduce here a new notion of coverage, named « label-mutant coverage ». It subsumesmost existing structural coverage criteria for unit testing, including statement coverage, branch coverage or MC/DC coverage, while allowing to decide whether the chosen criterionis satisfied by relying on a formal verification technique, either testing or proving or both.It also subsumes functional coverage criteria. Furthermore, we also introduce a method thatmakes use of automatic tools for testing or proving in order to reduce the verification costwhile satisfying the chosen coverage criterion. This method is implemented inside Frama-C, aframework for verification of C code (Frama-C). This way, it offers to the engineer a way tocontrol and to perform the expected verifications

Full textThis thesis aims to shed light on the fact to acquire a foreign language autonomously by watching television. It comes according to two fields of research that are “the didactic of languages” and the “cognitive psychology”. This thesis is based on a survey of Tunisian spectators who have acquired the Italian language by watching the Italian channel Rai Uno and also experimentation conducted with young children. Indeed, the acquisitions of language by the spectators are real despite the absence of education and interaction. They were evaluated by tests [CELI1] which have shown that these viewers have an intermediate level in Italian language. Qualitative analysis of interviews showed that exposure to a foreign language television is accompanied by an implicit learning of the language. The acquisition of the latter is the result of a long exposure and it is further developing the understanding skills than the production skills. Together, these data also showed the validity of Krashen hypothesis regarding the primacy of the acquisition to the learning, the importance of understandable inputs and the impact of the emotional filter

Full textThe dissertation presented here confronts the surprising lack of literary criticism around the poetry of Patrizia Cavalli. Whilst she is considered one of the most significant authors in the contemporary poetry scene, her oeuvre was never the subject of a monographic study.Cavalli’s work becomes established over the late extraordinary period of the twentieth-century literary production, curiously overlapping with the years spanning between 1975 and 1991 that Eric Hobsbawm calls The Landslide of the Short Twentieth Century. The absence of a political dimension in life is already made evident in her first book published in 1976, titled "Le mie poesie non cambieranno il mondo" (My poems won’t change the world: selected poems).Conversely, what is vital in Cavalli’s poetry is her investigation on the use of language, which is crucially the focus of her attention. Following up the research carried out by celebrated authors over the years, the analytical chapters presented here examine in depth Cavalli's intense manipulation of language, as well as the ethical and esthetical significance of her poetic research. In the attempt to address the lack of critical work on the topic of Cavalli’s poetry with a robust analytical approach, this study chose to focus its exploration efforts on the poems collected in the book Poesie (1974-1992) who collects the first three anthologies written by Cavalli. The libretto Tre risvegli (2009), representing Cavalli's unique digression into the territory of opera, was also chosen to provide a basis of comparison between the analytical findings in her earlier poetry and her later work. The apparently self-crafting poetic language that can be found in Poesie (1974-1992) and in Tre risvegli reveals a consciousness that seems to forge itself autonomously, established as it is in the poet's mind by the cyclical rhythms and sudden changes of the weather. In this language, the self is only a grammatical conceit with a precarious presence, with the poet's mind reflected on the superficial aspect of her writing.Paradoxically, this analytical study shows that in both Poesie (1974-1992) and Tre risvegli the superficial aspect of Cavalli's language is both the starting point and the endpoint of her exploration. In both, what is shown is the mystery of poetry, not conveying a specific meaning, but declaring itself as a tableau that serves to meditate on the emotional experience, specifically Cavalli’s chief focus of interest

Full textThe thesis is composed of four parts. In the first part, i present the theoretical and historical framework of the problem of consciousness. In the first chapter, an overview of the conceptual and methodological background is given in order to define the problems i shall raise. In the second chapter, i set out the hypothesis and the arguments in favor of the existence of phenomenal properties of consciousness. The third chapter exams some projects of naturalisation of consciousness proposed by neuroscience. I show how, and to what extent, such theories can help understanding of conscious processes. In the second part of the thesis, i deal with the conceptual problems due to the ambiguity of the notions of "qualia" and of "phenomenal consciousness", such as those put forward by philosophers of mind. In the fourth chapter, i present several cases of dissociation between implicit and explicit knowledge which empirically justify the conceptual distinction between cognitive consciousness and phenomenal consciousness. The phenomenon named "feeling of knowing", seems to suggest the psychological reality of these two types of consciousness. In chapter 5, i critique the high-order theory of consciousness. In the third part, i put forward a modularist conception of phenomenal consciousness. The sixth chapter deals with the idea according to which phenomenal properties depend on a modular device specialised in the processing of perceptual and proprioceptual information. Chapter 7 is focused on intentionality and consciousness

Full textExpressive therapies are considered one of the most effective intervention modality with children who have experienced traumatic events such as natural catastrophes. Particularly, several art therapists affirm that for trauma affected children, drawing is a preferential mode for expressing emotions, as it gives them the possibility of conveying the complexity of traumatic feelings, perceptions, thoughts and memories, by giving them a shape and, therefore, a sense. Notwithstanding these assumptions, the efficacy of art therapies with children exposed to natural disasters, has not been research proved. This thesis presents two studies, a pilot study and the main study, aimed at exploring the use of the “test de trois dessins: avant, pendant et avenir”, as a diagnostic tool and a therapeutic technique, with children victims of the earthquake in Italy, Haiti and Chilli. The pilot study is based on non-statistical qualitative observation of case studies, while the principal one employ of both qualitative and quantitative methodology. The results show the efficacy of the test in both pointing out the presence and the extent of the psychological trauma, and in enhancing the process of elaborating trauma. Further researches need to be done in order to validate the use of the “test de trois dessins: avanat, pendant et avenir” as a diagnostic and therapeutic tool with trauma affected children.

Full textThis PhD thesis consists in the critical edition of the commentary on the Nicomachean Ethics written by Radulphus Brito (ca. 1295). The critical text is preceded by a critical, historical and doctrinal study, where I examine some philological problems of the transmission of the text, the problem of its authorship, and the doctrines of the text. The text, whose transmission is characterized by fragmentary and reshaped witnesses, seems to represent an important stage of the latin reception of the Nicomachean Ethics at the end of the XIIIth century: his author, Radulphus Brito, a master of arts at the University of Paris at the end of the XIIIth century and at the beginning of the XIVth, deals with the most important moral problems of his age, in the context of the contemporary theological and philosophical debate

Full textAristotle's De anima becomes a main philosophical work in the course of the second half of the thirteenth century in Christian Europe. The controversy itself on "Unity of the human intellect" divides two ways of thinking that both belong to the University of Paris : some theologians condemn the theory of this unity, in the name of faith. But some Art Masters support this theory. They are mainly inspired by the Arab-Latin translation of Averroes "Long Commentary" from Michael Scot. Thomas Aquinas De unitate intellectus aimed at the Averroists such as Siger of Brabant, consists in summarizing Greek and Arabic commentaries. Henceforth Latin commentators no longer depend on these previous commentaries. Thus, Thomas Aquinas shows only philosophical way of thinking can be answered satisfactorily. So, faith itself can't be considered as sufficient. Thomas Aquinas brings a scientific revolution (as T. S. Kuhn would say) for he announced the self sufficiency of Reason itself, faced to faith. In spite of the two Parisian condemnations, the controversy goes on, until the end of the century. Moreover, more and more commentaries are written, this process reaches a new discipline : psychology, as the study of the human soul. This subject spreads from Paris to Oxford. Studies like this lead to a renewed view of thirteenth-century scholasticism : scholars are enlightening Aristotle's writings. A new Aristotle 's translation can thus be elaborated, not to mention the way these writings have been enriching actual sciences and the autonomy of the scientific field

Full textIn 1973, after sugar crisis and first oil shock, Brazil was willing to reboost its economy. It decided then to bet on an innovative energetic program, issued from the sugar cane culture: the proalcool plan. Before ending in a fiasco, this project overhaul the brazilians farms, encouraged by the strong sugar sector. Thirty years later, the brazilian president Luiz Ignacio da Silva, known as « Lula », gave a new boost to the production of ethanol fuel and this during his whole two mandats. First producer of sugar in the world, Brazil uses this raw material to reduce the percentage of oil expense and contribute to fighting against global warming. With its stunning fast-paced growth, the Brazil of Lula spellbound the international comunity and the brazilian president is welcomed in Northern and developing countries – especially in Africa – to promote ethanol fuel. The aim of this strategy is to settle the brazilian position within the international community and make Brazil a new energetic country, worried about the environmental protection. The roadmap Brazil gave itself, was hard to follow. In competition with a very active biofuels fields in the United States, Brazil is also very hardly criticized by the international community (UN).These critics mainly focus on the accusation of increasing world hunger and to affect its own environment. Because of this, biofuels field suffered an increasing number of setbacks. Back against the wall, the sector is tryingto adapt and Brazil is still holding the line

Full textThe Acre Continuation is the last part of the Old French continuations of the Historia of William of Tyre or Eracles, which provides an account of the history of the Latin East between 1229 and 1277. The Acre Continuation’s text is preserved in eleven medieval manuscripts: six were made in Acre and five in Europe. This work provides a codicological description for each of them. It studies the manuscript tradition and classifies the eleven manuscripts into groups on the base of repeated similarities of their variant readings. In addition, the edition is accompanied by a positive apparatus, which provides a complete presentation of the variant readings from all manuscripts. The linguistic analysis is founded on the edition’s text, as well as on the variant texts of the Acre manuscripts. The aim of this analysis is to describe the French of Outremer, the language that was written and spoken during the Crusades in the Holy Land and subsequently in some other Mediterranean territories. The critical edition is completed by a historical commentary, a comprehensive glossary and an index. The Introduction comprises a chronology and a description of the structure of the chronicle. It also provides a study of the modus operandi and working life of the copyists in the Acre scriptorium and of the methods employed by compilers dealing with historical sources

Full textThis research analyses the making of Dominique de Villepin’s foreign policy - as decided by President Chirac – by studying in a first time the Minister personnality : so, how could an interaction be between his real-life, his own longings and the international context he had to face up? Head of French diplomacy from May, 2002 to March, 2004, he came into office in a transition period. Indeed, a consequence of 9-11 attacks was the process set up by the Bush administration, which would lead to war in Iraq, but to a serious crisis of international principles too. During Iraqi crisis, the Minister tried to defend law against strength, negotiation against some arbitrariness, dialogue between civilizations against clash of civilizations. At the same time, the Ivorian crisis has been one of the other stakes in D. de Villepin’s policy, who particularly promoted the role of regional organizations. International challenges were not the minister’s only sphere of activity : From the Convention for the Future of Europe to the constitutional referendum failure in France, from the former Eastern countries integration in EU to the limits of Europe matter, European construction was one of great stakes of his come by the French political stage. On that subject, we will analyze his policy reception, widening our remarks to America and to some countries of the European Union. At least, we would try to see what could be his theory of international relationship, which was developed both on the content – by developing new negotiation tools – and on the form, with all the importance devoted to word

Full textStates are encouraged to spy on international organizations, as much on the structures themselves as on the members who compose them, because these organizations have determined since 1920 the role and power of states in the international order. This research deals with the intelligence process in the State diplomatic relation with the League of Nations (LN) and the United Nations (UN), and its coordination with diplomacy in developing a foreign policy within the LN and the UN. What is a stake is to define the theoretical levers of strategic coordination between the diplomatic and intelligence services during specific historical moments of apprehensions, objectives, means of implementation and conduct of policies of influence of states within international organizations. In the LN then in the UN, we will study intelligence through its evolution with regard to the new international frameworks, figures and spy games around the activities of international organizations and during strong diplomatic times which strengthened its role in international bodies. This study revisits the history of international relations and major multilateral institutions as it was appreciated by the intelligence services. We will see therefore that Intelligence in the LN and the UN is built depending on the diplomatic imperatives, as a traditional tool of power and influence, an instrument of strength and integration of the foreign policy of States. It will throw us in very contemporary affairs with all the depth of History

Full textThe starting point of our thesis is the critical discussion of a concept taken for granted by literary and ancient philosophy scholars. This is the cynic-stoic diatribe, so named because cynical themes would coexist with Stoic ones. Our first step is assessing the accuracy of the widely accepted definition, which makes the connection between the diatribe and a tradition of topics relating to moral popular philosophy. Then we explain our choice to accept and to try to integrate recent scientific acknowledgments which accept the diatribe as a literary genre relating to the spiritual guidance method of the Socratic philosophical schools, with a particularly attentive focus on the relationship between master and disciple. Starting from this controversial genre of Greek origin, we analyze the transition to the Roman period, by first examining the terminological aspect and then the philosophical framing. Among the methods, defined as diatribic, we focus on the only feature which does not appear to be challenged and that for this exact reason could be the basis of the existence of the genre itself: dialogism and the presence of a fictitious interlocutor. We then focus our attention on Seneca's work, and particularly on Letters to Lucilius, where the attempt to create a master-disciple relationship is intensely visible, and in which the presence of a fictitious interlocutor is structurally related to the development of this relationship. Then we discuss the diatribic forms of Roman satire, to reach Lucilius', Horace's and Persius' cases. A brief presentation is finally devoted to the analysis of relations between the diatribe, the Second Sophistic and the religious preaching

Full textGoal-directed behaviors are complex and involve a variety of cognitive processes. Medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) plays a key role in behavioral planning. More over, cells in the rat mPFC show specific firing modulations at location with a high motivational value. Such neuronal activity could be essential for the setting up installation of a goal-directed behavior. Further more, navigating to a spatial goal requires the building of a stable presentation of the environment which is hippocampus-dependent. So far however, only few studies have addressed the respective role of these two structures, and their interaction, during the acquisition and the consolidation of a goal directed-behavior. The work conducted during my PhD thesis aimed at studying the role of hippocampus and prefrontal cortex in this process. In a first study,we showed the existence of a prospective coding by mPFC neurons when the rat performs a working memory task. Neuronal activity signals both, the temporal sequence of the behavior, and the prediction of reward. These neurons would play a role inexecutive functions. In a second study, we focused on cerebral structures involved in the updating of the value of a goal as well as in its long-term retention. Our results showed that the inactivation of the intermediate hippocampus causes deficit in the short-term processing of a change in the goal value. On the other hand, the inactivation of the mPFC prevents long-term consolidation of this change. Integrity of this two structures would therefore be essential to perform an on-line updating of the goal value and for its long-term consolidation. Their interaction would be necessary to rapidly adapt, and in a lasting manner, the behavioral strategy of the animal when it faces an environmental change

Full textThrough a close examination of the trajectory of four African leaders, Barthélémy Boganda (Republic of Central Africa), Patrice Lumumba (Republic of Congo), Félix Moumié et Ruben Um Nyobé (Cameroun), during the independence era, and by means of the historical anthropology, the comparative method and focusing on Central Africa, this study tries to explore to what extent political assassination could constitute a way of regulating international relationships and lay the foundations of the national construction of their country of origins. Along their political career path, their UN-related and Pan–Africanism disillusionment that tightens around them the lethal noose of a Realpolitik caught between bipolarization and neo-colonialism will be referred to. The other hypothesis developed here is as followed : it could be possible through comparative history to bring out invariance within political assassination under the forms of recurrent processes such as the judiciary weapon, the media weapon, the lack of a decent burial place and the damnatio memoriae they’ve been sentenced to which all contrastingly led to a symbolic and iconic reversal. The study relies on numerous sources that complete each other in order to reconstitute the chain of events and allow new interpretations: private exclusive archives, public archives, some of which having been declassified for this purpose, audio-visual and printed sources, exclusive oral narratives collected by the author

Full textFor more than two decades, a number of African States within the scope of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region have sunk into both armed intrastate and domestic conflicts. From the Rwandan genocide to civil wars in Congo-Brazzaville, Angola, Uganda, and Burundi, or the constantly armed political violence in the Central African Republic (CAR), through the Great African War in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), numerous and important mechanisms for conflict resolution have been experienced, bilateral, communitarian, regional, as well as Onusian. Unfortunately, the concepts relative to the end of crisis and post-conflict reconstruction still remain empty words, given the revivals and extensions of conflicts in that Region. Thus, by mobilizing the neo-elitist approach which goes the empirical reality, after reviewing all the major elitist philosophical, political and sociological theories defended by the classical authors such as Wilfredo Pareto, Gaetano Mosca, etc. On one hand, and by resorting to Johan Galtung’s theory on negative peace versus positive peace, on the other, this dissertation aims at highlighting the role played by governing Elites in the peace process within the Region. After defining these elites, this monography shows the difficulties of solving conflicts due to the regional sociodemographic heterogeneity. Then, it emphasizes mechanisms for keeping negative peace by the governing Elites, in interaction with other protagonists
