This article discusses two problems of interpretation in the entry on Dexter in Jerome’s De viris illustribus (Hier. vir. ill.). In particular, it offers the first detailed discussion of the information we possess on Dexter’s omnimoda historia, and suggests that it may have been a Latin translation and/or adaptation of the first part of the chronicle of Eusebius, the so-called chronography.

Abstract This article examines the revival of the de viris illustribus genre in the twelfth century. These catalogues of the most important Christian authors were modelled on a template created in late antiquity by Jerome, but adopted new attitudes to what constitutes distinguished Christian literary activity. They regard the editing, collecting, and re-ordering of texts as equal to the composition of new works, and recognize legal codification as a noteworthy activity. As such, they represent the broadening out of a Latin Christian literary canon. These texts complicate our ideas about the re

Giovanni Boccaccio used prologues and epilogues of his Latin works to discuss relevant topics such as the finding of reliable sources or the dissamination of the knowledge. Francesco Petrarca faced the same issues when he wrote his scholarly and historical works. This paper aims at enlightening the intertextuality between prologues and epilogues of Boccaccio’s Genealogia and De montibus and the prologue of Petrarca’s De viris illustribus, showing that the formers were probably inspired by the latter.

Abstract:
This chapter unpacks a problem in writing the lives of powerful men: how can individual people be extracted from the kinds of physical dependency that characterize life within time? In Petrarch’s De viris illustribus, great men are shown to consume both matter and people around them. Boccaccio’s De casibus virorum illustrium explores the implications of such dependency, depicting powerful men who try, and fail, to police the boundaries of their bodies and lives. Chaucer picks up this dynamic as he models the Monk’s Tale on the De casibus, and he explores other kinds of dependency as well. Indeed, in the Monk’s Tale, texts emerge as dependent upon their readers’ time and attention to help bring their form into being.

Abstract:
St. Jerome’s treatise “On the Famous Men” is the first history of Christian literature. It consists of the biographies of ecclesiastical writers. Jerome modeled his book on the treatises of the corresponding genre by Suetonius and Cicero. Jerome’s treatise covers the first three centuries of development of the Christian literature. Each of the treatise’s 135 chapters is dedicated to an individual writer. The amount of the chapters is variable. The biographies of the writers are created in accordance with the rules of the classical rhetoric. The most important elements of the biography are the name of the writer, the time when he lived and worked, and his work, that is, books, written by him. To achieve credibility and accuracy, necessary in a historical narrative, Jerome mentions time, facts, known to everybody, the accounts of eyewitness. Jerome himself acts as a witness expressing his opinion about people, and about the books. The lives of ecclesiastical writers are described against the background of the events of the contemporary life. The reader learns about the persecution of Christians, their polemics with the Gentiles, the school of late antiquity, the library of Caesarea Maritima.
