Abstract:

Abstract:
The history of natural gas in Turkey started in 1970s by the usage of domestic gas in cement factories. However, natural gas began penetrating the energy market in 1980s with the usage of natural gas in Ankara. In the following years, the number of cities using natural gas reached six. Then, a new era started with the enactment of Natural Gas Market Law in 2001 and 53 distribution tenders have been realized by Energy Market Regulatory Authority until 2009. This thesis analyzes the performance of 38 Turkish natural gas distribution companies by using a non-parametric method, Data Envelopment Analysis. The results are used to determine the most proper model specification, to detect the important criteria affecting the efficiency levels and to find the common characteristics of the most inefficient firms. The results show that public firms compared to private firms, non-tender firms compared to tender firms, large firms compared to small firms and firms operating in more developed areas compared to firms operating in underdeveloped areas utilize resources and manage costs more efficiently. However, we can not get a certain conclusion about the comparison of old firms and new firms. Lastly, we try to detect the common characteristics of the most inefficient firms and find that the major problem is low delivery amount.

Abstract:
In today's business environment, organizations try to improve their efficiency in order to have more power in the global competition. This requires capabilities to detect and evaluate the impact of Information Technology (IT) on the organization's efficiency. There are some difficulties in evaluating the impact of IT on the organization‟s efficiency. For example, one should consider many quantitative and qualitative factors in the evaluation process. For solving these kinds of problems, this thesis proposes a methodology to identify the effects of IT investment and the importance of IT related activities on the organization‟s efficiency, within the BSC-DEA model. In the first parts of thesis, the Balanced Scorecard is used as a performance management tool for evaluating an organization‟s efficiency. The four dimensions of the Balanced Scorecard link organization‟s strategies with indicators and help the management establish an integrated efficiency assessment system for evaluation of IT investment. This thesis has studied some shortcoming of BSC for efficiency measurement and argued that DEA has the advantage to fill these shortcomings of BSC and to better evaluates impacts of IT on the organization's efficiency. In the Second part of this thesis, I have shown that the DEA model generates one single efficiency figure in multi-input and multi-output situations. DEA performs the optimization analysis on each individual unit (DMUs) and generate relative efficiency value of each DMU. In this way, the integrated BSC-DEA model is constructed. For a better explanation of proposed BSC-DEA model, I presented and analyzed an example in the final part of the thesis. The presented model has two major benefits in subjected area:Firstly, It Combines two well-established managerial methodologies and proposes a new approach to evaluate IT effects on organizations. This approach uses “BSC” as a comprehensive framework for defining evaluation criteria with regard to IT investment and uses “DEA” as a nonparametric technique for ranking organization performance with those criteria. The second contribution is that with the comprehensive view which BSC gives us and with efficiency measure that DEA calculates, we can have a dependent variable to study how and why some organizations use IT better than others.
Program: Magisterutbildning i informatik

Abstract:
Two studies were conducted to validate marshmallows as a saliva stimulant for use with toddlers. First, cortisol concentrations from 14 subjects (ages 6–46 years) were compared using three saliva collection methods: (1) plain cotton dental roll, (2) dental roll with one mini-marshmallow, and (3) expectorating into a collection tube using no cotton or stimulant. EIA was used for analyses. There were no significant differences among cortisol concentrations. Second, saliva collection compliance rate was compared for 21-month-olds (n = 51) using either flavored drink crystal- (compliance rate = 16.7%) or marshmallow-flavored (compliance rate = 60%) dental rolls for saliva collection (χ2 )1) = 4.02, p = .045). These studies indicate that marshmallow is a viable option for saliva stimulation to determine toddler cortisol concentrations using EIA.

Abstract:
In the thesis presented here, variations of two very prominent machine learning techniques, the Neural Network (NN) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) are used in an attempt to solve two classification problems. Classification involves the assignment of an unknown object into a pre-determined group which consists of a set of preclassified objects with similar features to that unknown object. The main theme of the research conducted in this thesis involves investigation into existing and proposed classifier architectures to improve the classification performance for certain research problems. The aim of the research conducted is to develop new classifiers that are robust and able to show a high level of classification accuracy to the problems that are being considered. The problems being considered in this thesis are material surface classification and epilepsy seizure phase classification. The material surface classification problem involves the classification of a material based on its surface features which are obtained from a tactile-sensing robotic arm. Feature extraction is carried out on this input and the classifier is then used to classify based on the extracted feature inputs. Epileptic seizure is a common neurological disorder which causes the sudden discharge of cortical neurons in the brain. This results in the onset of seizures lasting from a few seconds to around a minute. The input consists of data obtained from the electroencephalograph (EEG) of patients who suffer from epilepsy. The input is then subjected to feature extraction and the extracted feature inputs are applied to the classifier. Four traditional classifiers, namely SVM, NN, k-nearest neighbour (kNN) and naive Bayes classifier are utilised for comparison purposes to evaluate the performance of the proposed classifiers during the research conducted. To evaluate the robustness property of the classifier, the original data is contaminated with Gaussian white noise at various levels. The results of the research carried out are presented in three parts: 1)The performance of six commonly used neural-network-based classifiers are investigated in solving the material surface classification problem. The significant contribution from the research conducted in this section is in the application of the neural network architectures to a novel problem (i.e material classification). The neural network architectures are also altered and re-structured in order to t the problem space. Experimental results show that the parallel-structured, tree-structured and naive Bayes classifier outperform the others based on the average classification accuracy of the classifier when under the original data. The tree-structured classifier demonstrates the best robustness property under the noisy data. 2) In continuation of the research conducted in the previous section, a novel neural network having variable weights is proposed to deal with the material classification problem. The aim of doing this is to compare its performance to the best out of the 6 neural network architectures applied in dealing with the material classification problem. The epilepsy seizure phase classification problem is also introduced with the proposed variable weight neural network being implemented to deal with this problem. It is shown that the variable weight neural network (VWNN) classifier outperforms the traditional methods in terms of classification accuracy and robustness property when the input data is contaminated with noise. 3) A novel Interval Type-2 Fuzzy Support Vector Machine (IT2FSVM) classifier has been proposed to deal with the epilepsy seizure phase classification problem. The performance of the classifier is measured based on its classification accuracy for each of the epilepsy phases. Three traditional classifiers (SVM, kNN and naive Bayes) are used for comparison purposes. The results obtained from simulations show that the novel IT2FSVM is able to show improved performance in terms of the average classification accuracy when compared to the other classifiers under the original dataset and also shows a high level of robustness when compared to other classifiers under a noisy dataset.

Lai, Po-Lin. "A study on the relationship between airport privatisation and airport efficiency : an application of using AHP/DEA methods." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2013. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/46617/.

Full text
Abstract:
In order to deal with the competitive environment surrounding the air transport industry, civil aviation authorities have undertaken several approaches to improve airport efficiency, such as investing in the infrastructure and privatising airport ownership or governance. Among these methods, airport privatisation policy has been implemented for around 25 years in the U.K., closely followed by other European countries. By contrast, decision makers elsewhere, such as in the Asia-Pacific region, are now interested in privatisation and in doing so evaluate the impact of this process elsewhere. Focussing on the most popular method for assessing airport efficiency, with Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) a unit can appear efficient simply because of its pattern of inputs and outputs rather than any inherent efficiency. But only using DEA may not provide useful results about the efficiency of airports as different decision makers may weight the relative importance of inputs and outputs differently (for example, airport managers, and airline companies). In this research, another aim is to develop and demonstrate the applicability of different analysis techniques within the AEES. For this reason, Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) analysis is adopted to calculate the importance of each variable. These results are then integrated into both DEA and DEA, Assurance Region (AR) models, to reflect the different importance of the metrics. In the context of air transportation, an integrated AHP/DEA and AHP/DEA-AR model are applied for the first time to evaluate airport efficiency. A sensitivity analysis with different variable sets is carried out. In conclusion, an AEES is established and the result shows that the approach by adopting AHP/DEA-AR model in particular can provide more accurate values of relative efficiency than using the traditional DEA approach. There are also different priorities between stakeholder groups and these can affect the efficiency scores of airports. However, the results for each of the different analysis techniques show that there is no statistically significant relationship between airport ownership and efficiency. Therefore, the primary aim of this research is to examine the relationship between airport privatisation and efficiency, through an Airport Efficiency Evaluation System (AEES). The study covers Europe and the Asia-Pacific region, reflecting different attitudes towards the role of government within airport management. Amini, Elham. "Characterization of Slow Pyrolysis Behavior of Live and Dead Vegetation." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2020. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/8448.

Abstract:
Prescribed (i.e., controlled) burning is a common practice used in many vegetation types in the world to accomplish a wide range of land management objectives including wildfire risk reduction, wildlife habitat improvement, forest regeneration, and land clearing. To properly apply controlled fire and reduce unwanted fire behavior, an improved understanding of fundamental processes related to combustion of live and dead vegetation is needed. Since the combustion process starts with pyrolysis, there is a need for more data and better models of pyrolysis of live and dead fuels. In this study, slow pyrolysis experiments were carried out in a pyrolyzer apparatus and a Thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) under oxygen free environment in three groups of experiments. In the first group, the effects of temperature (400–800 °C), a slow heating rate (H.R.) (5–30 °C min−1), and carrier gas flow rate (50–350 ml min−1) on yields of tar and light gas obtained from pyrolysis of dead longleaf pine litter in the pyrolyzer apparatus were investigated to find the optimum condition which results in the maximum tar yield. In the second group of experiments, 14 plant species (live and dead) native to forests in the southern United States, were heated in the pyrolyzer apparatus at the optimum condition. A gas chromatograph equipped with a mass spectrometer (GC–MS) and a gas chromatograph equipped with a thermal conductivity detector (GC-TCD) were used to study the speciation of tar and light gases, respectively. In the third group of experiments, the slow pyrolysis experiments for all plant species (live and dead) were carried out in the TGA at 5 different heating rates ranged from 10 to 30 ℃ min-1 to study the kinetics of pyrolysis. The results showed that the highest tar yield was obtained at a temperature of 500 °C, heating rate of 30 °C min−1, and sweep gas flow rate of 100 ml min−1. In addition, the tar composition is dominated by oxygenated aromatic compounds consisting mainly of phenols. The light gas analysis showed that CO and CO2 were the dominant light gas species for all plant samples on a dry wt% basis, followed by CH4 and H2. The kinetics of pyrolysis was studied using one model-free method and three model-fitting methods. First, the model-free method of Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (KAS) was used to calculate the rates of pyrolysis as a function of the extent of conversion. The results showed that different plant species had different rates at different conversions. Then, three model fitting methods were used to find the kinetic parameters to potentially provide a single rate for each plant species. The results showed that the simple one-step model did not fit the one-peak pyrolysis data as well as the distributed activation energy model (DAEM) model. The multiple-reaction DAEM model provided very good fits to the experimental data where multiple peaks were observed, even at different heating rates.

In South Africa, Deaf people communicate with one another and the broader community by means of South African Sign Language. The majority of Deaf people who have access to a mobile&nbsp
phone (cell phone) use Short Message Service (SMS) to communicate and share information with hearing people, but seldom use it among themselves. It is assumed that video messaging&nbsp
will be more accessible to Deaf people, since their&nbsp
level of literacy may prevent them from making effective use of information that is disseminated via texting/SMS. The principal objective of the&nbsp
esearch was to explore a cost-effective and efficient mass multimedia messaging system. The intention was to adapt a successful text-based mass notification system, developed by a&nbsp
local nongovernmental organization (NGO), to accommodate efficient and affordable video mass messaging for Deaf people. The questions that underpin this research are: How should video- streaming mass-messaging methods be compared and evaluated to find the most suitable method to deliver an affordable and acceptable service to Deaf people? What transport vehicles&nbsp
&nbsp
&nbsp
should be considered: Multimedia Message Service (MMS), the web, electronic mail, or a cell phone resident push/pullapplication? Which is the most cost effective? And, finally: How does the video quality of the various transport vehicles differ in terms of the clarity of the sign language as perceived by the Deaf? The soft-systems methodology and a mixed-methods methodology&nbsp
were used to address the research questions. The soft-systems methodology was followed to manage the research process and the mixed-methods research methodology was followed to&nbsp
collect data. Data was collected by means of experiments and semi-structured interviews. A prototype for mobile phone usage was developed and evaluated with Deaf members the NGO Deaf&nbsp
Community of Cape Town. The technology and internet&nbsp
usage of the Deaf participants provided background information. The Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) was used to analyse&nbsp
the quantitative data, and content analysis was used to analyse the documents and interviews. All of the Deaf participants used their mobile phones for SMS and the majority (81.25%) used&nbsp
English to type messages
however, all indicated that they would have preferred to use South Africa sign language on their mobile phones if it were available. And they were quite willing to pay between 75c and 80c per message for using such a video-messaging&nbsp
service.Of the transport vehicles demonstrated, most Deaf people indic indicated that they preferred to use the SMS&nbsp
prototype (with a web link to the video) rather than the MMS prototype with the video attached. They were, however, very concerned about the cost of using the system, as well as the quality of the sign language videos.

Clatworthy, David Elland. "A new method of meshing in discontinuous deformation analysis (DDA)." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/16089.

Full text
Abstract:
Includes bibliography.
Discontinuous Deformation Analysis (DDA) is a discrete element method developed by Shi [1988] specifically for modelling blocky rock masses. The DDA method is based on the assumption that deformation and failure of such rock masses is primarily due to differential movements of rock blocks, rather than strain and fracture of intact rock material. Strains and stresses are assumed to be constant over the area of each rock block. Contact between blocks is modelled using penalty functions, with Coulomb's friction law controlling sliding along block boundaries. Tests show that while DDA is not well suited to dynamic simulations where the velocities of blocks become large, it can model rock masses to a reasonable degree of accuracy in static analyses. There are various analysis control parameters which have a marked effect on the solution, however, and the user should take care in choosing suitable values for these parameters. A method is proposed here, in which certain blocks can be sub-divided into Finite Element meshes in order to obtain a more accurate description of their deformation. The method takes advantage of the fact that both DDA and the Finite Element Method (FEM) use the principle of stationary potential energy to obtain the solution equations for block equilibrium. Both DDA blocks and FEM elements can therefore initially be treated as DDA blocks, using the standard DDA formulation, and then the solution equations for the FEM elements are converted into Finite Element format by a simple transformation procedure before solution. First and second order DDA blocks are considered in this report, along with their equivalents in FEM, the C0-linear and C0-quadratic triangular elements. The C0-linear elements are found to be too stiff in modelling bending deformation, due to the assumption of constant strain throughout the element. The C0-quadratic elements are able to accurately model bending, however. It is shown through tests that the performance of these FEM elements, formulated within the DDA method, is identical to that obtained using the corresponding elements in conventional Finite Element programs. The sub-meshing method therefore allows mixed-formulation analyses, with DDA blocks and FEM meshes interacting within a single system, while remaining efficient, and reasonably simple to incorporate into existing DDA program codes. It would also be possible to model material non-linearity and fracture using this method.

Abstract:

Abstract: This dissertation presents an algorithm for solving optimal control problems (OCP) of differential algebraic equations (DAE) based on the augmented Lagrangian method. The algorithm relaxes the algebraic equations and solves a sequence of OCPs of ordinary differential equations (ODE). The major benefits of this approach are twofold. First, the state and algebraic variables can be bound constrained, even when the solution methods are indirect. Second, by reducing the system to an ODE, the representation is more compact and can be handled by computationally efficient methods. Mathematical proofs are developed showing that the algorithm converges to the objective value of the original OCP and the violation of the relaxed algebraic equation goes to zero. These properties are confirmed with numerical experiments.

Abstract:
A comparison of two methods to deal with allocating controls for unattainable moments in an aircraft was performed using a testbed airframe that resembled an F/A-18 with a large control effector suite. The method of preserving the desired moment direction to deal with unattainable moments is currently used in a specific control allocator. A new method of prioritizing the pitch axis is compared to the moment-direction preservation. Realtime piloted simulations are completed to evaluate the characteristics and performance of these methods. A direct comparison between the method of preserving the moment direction by scaling the control solution vector and prioritizing the pitching moment axis is performed for a specific case. Representative maneuvers are flown with a highly unstable airframe to evaluate the ability to achieve the specific task. Flight performance and pilot interpretation are used to evaluate the two methods. Pilot comments and performance results favored the method of pitch-axis prioritization. This method provided favorable flight characteristics compared to the alternative method of preserving the moment direction for the specific tasks detailed in this paper. Abstract:
Throughout Sweden’s history several distinct types of masonry constructions have been used. In the late 1950s the most common masonry construction that dominates today’s market was developed. A study has been conducted in an attempt to better understand how masonry constructions are to be designed. Commercial calculation methods applied for sizing cavity walls today results in oversized constructions that are reinforced with expensive consoles. The consoles are placed in the cavity wall for supporting the masonry were it would otherwise break. A new calculation method could prove these consoles to be an unnecessary expense. A cavity wall is by principal only exposed by its own dead-load and is therefor the main load when sizing the wall. The purpose of this study is to develop a more accurate method of calculating the spread of the deadload in the cavity walls masonry. This could prove that the weaker points in the wall is not in need of reinforcement by consoles. This study will investigate the possibility to use the finite element method for the calculation of the deadloads spread inside a cavity wall. Commercial calculation methods that are used today does not use the finite element method and the differences in these two initial states are unknown.

And the results of those DEA performance evaluations usually don’t link with traditional profit performance indicator. This thesis evaluates the performance of 9 airlines in three different continents by using DEA method with different set of input-output from 5 cost-related inputs and 3 revenue-related outputs. The purpose of this thesis is to explore the relevance between performance evaluation of DEA and the traditional profit performance. The empirical results show that the rank of performance evaluation using DEA-CCR method with single input single output is completely the same as the performance ranking using traditional profit evaluation. However, there is no certain link between the performance of traditional profit evaluation and the performance evaluated using DEA method with multiple input multiple output which varies with the input-output set. The best profitable airline judging from traditional analysis and efficient-input and inefficient-input items of all airlines can be identified by using the evaluation results of DEA method with various multiple input-multiple output sets.

The market has become more competitive in PC industry, especially in Notebook industry. ODM was further impacted seriously. The development of Notebook is confronting the key turning point. To maintain the advantage in the industry, it is imperative to improve the competitive ability and the efficiency of operation. The research is covering 5 ODM factories, including Wistron, Compal, Inventec, Quanta, and Pegatron, to analyze their operating efficiency during 2008 – 2012. Use DEA method by and Malmquist Productivity Index to evaluate the operating performance and the movement of productivity during different periods. It is expected to analyze the operating performance in the past for the 5 companies respectively. The result may be the basis of operating guidelines and may be the reference of raising efficiency for Notebook companies. Two variables, fixed assets and the number of employees, were input and the one variable, operating net income, was output. It revealed Compal maintained its standard above the target of the efficiencies of whole techniques, pure techniques, and scale techniques. However, not only the scale efficiency slipped in Quanta but the efficiency of whole techniques descended. Some aspects need to be improved by the rest companies. Regarding the movement of the efficiency from 2008 to 2012, productivity of 2 companies, i.e. Compal and Pegatron, growed, and productivity of the other 3 companies, i.e. inventec, Quanta, and Wistron, slipped. The average of productivity increased from the aspect of the movement on pure technique index during 2008 – 2012. If it was only focused on the movement of productivity, it had the downward trend in the first 3 years but had a pick up from the fourth year.

The present diplomatic essay treats the study of Bootstrap method within the bounds of completion of DEA deficiencies during the estimation of technical efficiency of several decision-making units. More precisely it will be scrutinized bootstrap as a mean of estimating biasness and the confidence intervals of the efficiency scores, which arise from the use of DEA. As it will be come clear, DEA as an implementation of linear programming, constitutes a non-parametric method of estimating technical efficiency and is characterized by the drawback of non-distinguishing the noise by the inefficiency. On the other hand, bootstrap constitutes a repetitive implementation of DEA, which is assigned to give a solution to the above questions. The purpose of this essay is to verify the degree in which bootstrap completes this mission. For this reason there are used real data, which concern fish farms that are placed in Greek territory while, the calculations are executed through the programs DEAP and PIM – DEA V2.0

Full text
Abstract:
Fundamental analysis is an approach for evaluating a public firm for its investmentworthiness by looking at its business at the basic or fundamental financial level. The focus of this thesis is on utilizing financial statement data and a new generalization of the Data Envelopment Analysis, termed the GDEA model, to determine a relative financial strength (RFS) indicator that represents the underlying business strength of a firm. This approach is based on maximizing a correlation metric between GDEA-based score of financial strength and stock price performance. The correlation maximization problem is a difficult binary nonlinear optimization that requires iterative re-configuration of parameters of financial statements as inputs and outputs. A two-step heuristic algorithm that combines random sampling and local search optimization is developed. Theoretical optimality conditions are also derived for checking solutions of the GDEA model. Statistical tests are developed for validating the utility of the RFS indicator for portfolio selection, and the approach is computationally tested and compared with competing approaches. The GDEA model is also further extended by incorporating Expert Information on input/output selection. In addition to deriving theoretical properties of the model, a new methodology is developed for testing if such exogenous expert knowledge can be significant in obtaining stronger RFS indicators. Finally, the RFS approach under expert information is applied in a Case Study, involving more than 800 firms covering all sectors of the U.S. stock market, to determine optimized RFS indicators for stock selection. Those selected stocks are then used within portfolio optimization models to demonstrate the superiority of the techniques developed in this thesis.

In recent five decades, Taiwan Power Company (TPC) has been the sole electric utility in Taiwan. How the Company operates closely reflect to how the people and business be served. Since global trend internationalization and libera-lization, it is even more urgent for TPC to bring up its impro-vement strategy coping with situation related to business ope-rational inefficiency.Aiming at the goals mentioned above, this study decided to apply DEA model to evaluate the operational efficiency of TPC as a whole and its 22 District Officces. The findings through this study are listed as follows: 1.The results of time series analysis(1) The major reason of low technical efficiency of TPC is the lack of scale efficiency.(2)The input of capital and manpower of TPC has already been excessive, therefore, the investment of capital and the allocation of manpower must be careful.(3)If we don''t consider the factor of improper scale, According that the measure by BBC model, there are 14 DMU bring about the pure technical efficiency =1, in other words, there are 14 years arrive at optimum efficiency among the data of 27 years by BBC model.(4)Because of the clear distinction between peak and off-peak consumption characteristics and taking much time for building a power plant, we need foresee the future demand loading and develop some sources of electric power in advance. According to above reason, it is easy to make man power misallocation and have a high cost capacity margin. Hence, it causes a lower technical efficiency and the situation not to be in a optimum scale. 2.The results of efficiency analysis in the 22 district offices of TPC(1) The average value of technical efficiency of all district office is 0.974, the average value of pure technical efficiency is 0.992, the average value of scale efficiency is 0.981, therefore, the whole values are above 0.950 ,the performance is not quite bad.(2) According to the sense of Norman and Stocker (1991),all the DMU can be classified into four ranking criteria on the basis of the strength of overall efficiency: the robustly efficient unit, the marginal efficient units, the marginal inefficient units, the distinctly inefficient units. After the classification, we can clearly see the performance efficiencies and their some changes in district offices during the 1995 to 1997.(3) In this study, it appears no absolute relation between overall efficiency, either in the operational place or the amount of task . e.g. Penghu and Taitung district offices are still evaluated as the robustly efficient units based on the above ranking criteria .(4) Comparing to the performance value at 1995 to 1997, these values of all district offices have a descending trend in the recent 3 years.(5) Finally, the results of this study depict the district offices which have its own strength or weakness of input and out.

The network-based approach applies the centrality concept developed in social network analysis to discriminate efficient decision making units (DMUs) as determined by standard DEA. .It removes the bias caused by a scale difference among organizations and highlighting the approach’s ability to identify the strengths and weaknesses of each organization. In order to evaluate the operational performance of each DMU (national university) precisely, two-stage analysis model is used which separates the university performance into the “administration performance” and “teaching and research performance”. Furthermore, we separate the efficient DMUs into four categories which are general normal university, technical university, government-supported university and non-government-supported university to discuss the management inspiration. The analysis results show that the average performance of normal university in the first stage (administration performance) has no more differences between technical university, but with significant difference in the second stage (research performance); and the average performance of the two stages between government-supported university and non-government-supported university both exist a huge gap which means the support from government is work. According to the analysis results, we successfully apply the network-based DEA ranking method and two-stage analysis model to evaluate the operational performance of the national university in Taiwan. This method not only distinguishes the efficient DMUs, but also rank sort the efficient DMUs to let the manager get more information for analyzing and discussing.

Taiwanese semiconductor industry has been facing new competitive environment such as difficultly gaining resources. Therefore, how to effectively apply limited resources to produce good outputs is an important issue to most firms. In recent years, the data envelopment analysis method (DEA) has successfully used to assess performance effectiveness with multiple inputs and multiple outputs in many areas. In this thesis, we apply the data envelopment analysis method to asses performance evaluation for firms of Taiwanese semiconductor industry. Taiwanese semiconductor industry consists of IC design, IC manufacturing, and IC packaging and testing sub-industry and each one is classed into two or three groups with concerning the similarity among firms by firm’s scales with an ABC clustering like method. Evaluating Input and output items are filtered by literature review and correlation analysis for each group. The CCR and BCC modes of the DEA method, Malmquist Productivity Index (MPI), as well as slack variables analysis method are applied to assess firms’ performance effectiveness. Our founding is that the majority ineffectiveness factors of most firms because are technical or scale inefficiency.

Abstract:
105
We need to assess a group of selected firms in an industry and their production lines contain two stages. Each stage has a dedicated bundle of inputs and outputs and the two stages share the other bundle of inputs and outputs. There is a set of intermediate items, (links) between the two stages. The lower and upper bounds of the ratios of the sharing inputs and outputs are prespecified. All firms take turns be the one to evaluate itself. Let firm o evaluates itself against the peer firms. We employed linear programming DEA model to measure the shadow prices of the inputs, outputs and links to obtain the best efficiency score. The dual model of GBM-CRS is to measure the shadow slacks of inputs to be reduced and the outputs to be added so that firm o would improve himself to the best imaginary frontier of the peer firms. In Phase-I of our procedure, we treat the links as non-discretionary in the linear programming model of GBM-bc (Liu, 2017b). The optimal best efficiency score is computed and the links are partitioned into analog-as-input (aa-inputs) and analog-as-outputs (aa-outputs). The ratio of each sharing inputs and outputs are determined as well. In Phase-II, a linear programming model of GBM-bc model (Liu, 2017a) aims to measure the shadow prices and shadow slacks of the inputs, aa-inputs, outputs and aa-outputs. The model determines the best efficiency score of the overall production system as well. Reducing the evaluated shadow slacks, the targets of inputs and aa-inputs on the best efficiency frontier are defined. On the other hand, adding the obtained shadow slacks, the locations of outputs and aa-outputs on the best efficiency frontier are pointed. The benchmark firms of firm o are identified as well. Once each firm assessed himself, all the firms are ranked according to their efficiency scores.

106
This study analyzes the performance of the 12 district management offices of Taiwan Water Company from 2013 to 2016, and measures the internal and external market performance through a two-stage data envelopment analysis. The results of the study showed that during the research period, the internal business performance was poor as the first district and the seventh district, which were caused by the low performance of management efficiency (PE) and scale efficiency (SE); the poor performance of the external market was the first district and The fourth district is because the management efficiency (PE) performance is not ideal. In addition, this paper finds that "the ratio of staff to workers", "units without operations" and "having management reservoirs or rivers" have significant inefficiency in internal business performance; the more significant the inefficiency in the central market in the external market The number of factories in the jurisdiction and the number of people in the jurisdiction are lower inefficiency in internal operations due to the size of the economy. Conversely, there is a higher inefficiency in the external market.

102
Abstract Recently, as the popularity of trade globalization grows, the economic benefits that the MICE industry generates attract every government’s attention. In addition to assisting manufacturers in developing and expanding the opportunities for international trade, hosting international trade shows can not only drive the development of related industries, but also increase the international visibility of the host country. Therefore, the Taiwan government is actively devoted to hosting international trade shows in Taiwan. However, wherever in academic literature or practices, it is scarcely identified to appraise systematically the performance of hosting trade shows. This is due to the fact that the trade shows are project-oriented, and have characteristics of multiple inputs and outputs. The Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is a method of performance appraisal that is suitable for multiple inputs and outputs. Yet, it was mostly applied to evaluate institutions in the past. This study tries to apply the DEA to appraise the performances of important international trade shows hosted by Taiwan. Through this study, the author hopes to make contributions toward the systematic appraisal of trade show performance, and to make the evaluation results contain more reference values for trade show organizers. The data analyzed in this study are collected from the international trade shows hosted by major PEO of Taiwan in 2013. This research also provides recommendations for hosting trade shows in the future. KEY WORDS: International trade show, Performance appraisal, Data envelopment analysis

102
In recent years, with the increasing material, people''s awareness of environmental protection has also been enhanced. WWF years ago started advocating "Earth Hour" activity, but also activities over the past two years is the subject of some question. In fact, today, with the popularity of LED lighting methods already have been resolved. According to the New York Times reported that if all LED lighting technology replacing traditional light bulbs, only in terms of savings in electricity consumption, it can, in just 20 years to reduce carbon dioxide emissions around the world by 50%. This shows that the popularity of LED lighting is an effective initiative to promote energy-saving emission reduction. In this study, the data envelopment analysis to select operating costs, fixed assets and number of employees to put items, net operating income for the output variables, analysis of Taiwan''s LED business performance. Its analysis of the data sample for the Economic Journal Database (TEJ) received recorded in 16 listed companies for the study, and in consideration of the homogeneity of the population, and this 16 companies into the midstream and downstream of each 8 A , B group doing research, the study period from 2011 to 20012 years. This study suggests that the LED midstream companies should enhance their technical level, to understand the market trends and actively with the international LED manufacturers strategic alliances to obtain patent licenses, active and innovative research and development, and enhance their competitive advantage. Downstream and upstream firms may take a similar strategy, low-cost competitive advantage to try and hold the patent carried OEM manufacturers alliance, thereby obtaining patents jointly expand market share.

97
In this study, the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method will be used as a theoretical foundation to select the best strategic alliance partner among different IT equipment manufacturers. The first part of four different set of input variables were identified to explore the effect on the partner’s choice. Fifteen listed companies were chosen as the Decision Making Unit (DMU). The inventory turnover ratio, total assets turnover ratio, accounts receivable turnover ratio, fixed assets turnover ratio and other assets had specified as the input variables of the DEA model, while the net profit margin, return on assets and return on equity were assigned as the output variables. The combined efficiency of Taiwan Mobile Corporation and the listed companies were calculated and used as an index to determine the optimal candidate for the strategic alliance. The analysis showed that different input variables would provide different combined efficiency and result in different choice of optimal strategic candidate. The second part of Twelve listed companies will be chosen as the Decision Marking Unit (DMU). The financial data from the market observation post system will be identified as input and output variables to account for the relative important of each input variable, the opinions of experts have been input to the AHP model to determine appropriate weight of different input variable. The simulation result shows that the best strategic alliance partner for TWM Corporation is TAILYN Corporation.

This method combines the advantages of redox system and inorganic filler: low reaction temperature, high yield, low activation energy, good physical properties, improvement of mechanical properties… Here we use acrylonitrile ( AN ) as monomer which can be used as a good material of acrylic fiber and ABS plastic; DEA intercalated MMT serves as the initiator of the system, amount of intercalating DEA was analyzed by EA. Nanocomposites made from different molar ratio of AN with respect to hydroxy groups ( OH ) of DEA was investigated by XRD, TGA, IR. Molecular weight of polyacrylonitrile ( PAN ) was accomplished before extraction of polyacrylonitrile from nanocomposites by LiCl/DMF solution. Molecular weight of PAN decreased as the amount of feeding AN decreased. D-spacings of MMT enlarged as the amount of feeding AN increased and basal reflection detected from XRD disappeared when amount of AN was 160 times as more as OH groups of DEA bounded on MMT. After embedded the nanocomposites in epoxy resin and sectioned it with ultramicrotome to 30nm. We can easily observed the nanoscale dispersion of nanocomposites characterized by TEM. PAN/DEA-MMT can be used as a kind of carbon source and a better PAN material to apply in many other aspects such as copolymer, fiber, etc…

Abstract:
100
People works overloading there will be considerable risk. In the long-term overweight mental or physical load will even affect their health, work performance and productivity. City councilors have both heavier mental workload and also engaged in heavy physical load, so how to assess workload is extremely important to discuss. Because each city councilor gives different service way to their people, therefore if we use a common set of weights to assess the workload level which seems less appropriate. So in this study we used the relative workload assessment models to distinguish the level of work loading. This method was restricted under the condition of envelopment analysis; the elected city councilors can choose the most favorable set of weights to calculate their workload scores. Even if the workload of some of city councilors were classified as relatively light, they cannot deny the objective of this method. Among various kind of workload assessment method the subjective assessment skill was accepted and applied by majority research. This study used subjective assessment skill to find the relative difference among city councilors. Taichung City have a total of 63 city councilors, in this study to obtain the load information from 52 members, calculated relative workload scores of them, the data showed 16 city councilors have been classified as a relatively heavy workload, accounting for 30.77%. The results show that the sum of the performance standards of efficiency the subject of the right value is 0.116661, much larger than the other five criterion values, this phenomenon shows the level of performance criterion in this workload assessment, but the most significant criterion. That is, those Members in their jobs relative emphasis on the performance of the voters. However, the physical criterion does not have a significant contribution to the workload scores, because the weighting of this criterion in 52 subjects, 29 to give values close to 0, this phenomenon indicates that most of Taichung City councilors didn’t consider physically fatigure as the major burden of the public service. The performance standards of all City Councilors’ workload data, each workload scores for assessment of City Councilor placed on the horizontal axis, combined with the more important evaluation criterion, proposed findings of this study: (1) the majority of the City Councilors are outstanding representatives of the people, they did their best to serve the voters, and their service performance consider themselves popular with voters agree, and serious work, their workload is relatively heavy. (2) the underachievement and improperly configured the City Councilors are very rare, obviously Taichung City Councilors are in compliance with their expertise, that is, as long as they did their best to serve the voters, their performance will be the recognition and appreciation of the voters. (3) most of the Taichung City Members belonging to the type of “high workload, high frustration and low workload, low frustration”, this phenomenon: It seems City Councilors more dedicated to serve the voters the more frustration their are. The lighter workload to take the smaller frustration will be. The study shows City Councilors who do their utmost to voters at the same time, they hope to obtain the identity of the voters, and voters' loyalty to support. In this study, Subjective workload assessment techniques, and application of multi-dimensions of NASA-TLX NASA research center as a workload evaluation index, future research can be applied to the evaluation criterion of SWAT as a workload, and even can be applied to objective sexual workload assessment methods, longitudinal studies to provide more analysis of the workload on the mouthpiece of the representatives of the people.

Automotive electronics is optimistic industries with future prospects 4C industries. This study is according to six automotive electronics manufacturers in Taiwan from 2008 to 2012 as the research object, and input factors with the number of employees, research development expense ratio and fixed assets by applying Data Envelopment Analysis method. Output elements is operating profit ratio, estimate with its overall efficiency, technical efficiency, scale efficiency and returns to scale in evaluating the operating efficiency. The results showed that the average of overall technical efficiency automotive electronics industry is 0.773. Pure technical efficiency value is 0.974, and the scale efficiency is 0.780. There are 22.7% for input and output elements of the resources to be to promote. It indicates that six automotive electronics industries have not yet reached efficient allocation of resources. Comment with six automotive electronics industry manufacturers, returns to scale from 2008 to2012, the Mobiletron Electronics Co., Ltd and Stark Technology Inc. are showing constant returns to scale. It is equal to the ratio of increase in production the same as of all production factors. It says that to achieve the input and output elements of the effective use of resources. Less than optimum efficiency of other manufacturers should be to improve the decision-making units, when all input elements into output performance, all the decision-making unit of the efficient utilization of resources, that would be to reduce operating costs.
