ABSTRACTIn Christian tradition, accounts of religious language have commonly centered on analogical predication arising from a created world that reflects its Creator. Recent decades have witnessed a change: metaphor has gone into ascendance while analogy has suffered an eclipse. This essay critiques four trends in contemporary accounts of religious language: the ascription of universal range to metaphor; inadequate accounts of the nature of metaphor; insufficient attention given to the nature of literal speech; and the consequent deficient understandings of the relationship of metaphor and an

The primary rhetorical device, metaphor, frequently alludes to figurative language in general. Therefore, linguists, critics, and writers have always given it considerable attention. It has historically been examined and approached in terms of its basic parts (i.e., image, object, sense, etc.) and types (such as cliché, dead, anthropomorphic, current, extended, compound, etc. metaphors), as it was initially a significant aesthetic and rhetorical figure. However, recently, metaphor has drawn even more attention from a completely different standpoint of ideologization and conceptualization, espe

Abstract:
In this paper Rachel Fensham returns to the writings of Gaston Bachelard in order to examine the poetics of space from a non-European perspective. Spatial metaphors, such as the ‘dead heart’ that might evoke phenomenological and psychic dimensions of space in Australia, also register in historical and geographical imaginaries. However, postcolonial theories of space disturb visual metaphors and cartographic concepts in the mises en scène of theatrical performance. Here, Fensham analyzes two recent performances that radically reimagine the poetics of (Australian) space through the movement traj
