Abstract:
In this thesis the subject of grief and healing are examined in three novels by the Japanese writers Hiromi Kawakami, Ruth Ozeki and Banana Yoshimoto. The method for the analysis is based on psychiatrist Elisabeth Kübler-Ross’ Five Stages of Grief theory, but in the analysis of these novels, it became clear that the grief/healing-stages for the protagonists are not expressed in the exact same manner as the non-fictional patients of Kübler-Ross’ study. The analysis shows that this is partly due to the fact that the narratives take place in Japan and that there is a clear intervention where the writers have used magical interruptions in their realistic portrayal of bereavement, to help the protagonists begin to recover. These magical interruptions, this thesis states, are the use of magical realism, especially connected to the long history of Japanese folklore and myth. As a result, this thesis presents a modified model of analysis, which also reflects how the protagonists filled with bereavement and sorrow can be helped to heal and recover by the interruption of fantastic and magical events. Through this study it has become clear that not only is the need for healing significant but the need for family, relationships and a sense of belonging are just as important. To re-connect with their lost loved ones, whomever they may be, these characters must cross through the magical interventions within the narratives and dare to reach out to the people around them, strengthened by their loss and trauma, rather than fearing relationships with others due to previous trauma and grief.

Shaw, C. L. "Deaf in the USSR : 'defect' and the New Soviet Person, 1917-1991." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2011. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1210777/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the history of the deaf in the Soviet Union from the February Revolution of 1917 to the fall of communism in 1991. Its primary goal is to assess the impact of disability on Soviet programmes of identity and the fashioning of a Soviet subjectivity and selfhood. From the birth of the Soviet state, the nascent deaf community sought to cast off the stigma, marginality and legal restrictions of their pre-revolutionary status and re-forge themselves as Soviet people. Deaf individuals adopted and transformed Soviet values, such as collectivism, humanism, labour and initiative, in an ongoing attempt to find their place within Soviet society. This utopian drive for equality and inclusion was tempered, however, by competing and sometimes contradictory understandings of the deaf: as objects of state beneficence and welfare, and as a separate community defined (both positively and negatively) by their ―defect‖. The thesis explores the activities of state bodies in the spheres of deaf education, labour and culture as well as the changing medical and educational theories of deafness, but its primary focus is the agency of deaf individuals, including how they constituted their own individual and collective selfhood. Its main source base is the archive of the All-Russian Society of the Deaf, the organisational body run by the deaf from 1926 to the present, alongside archival sources from other state institutions (the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Health, the Soviet of Ministers of the USSR and the Trades Union) as well as printed sources (deaf journalism, literature, theatre and art). On this basis, the thesis argues that a unique deaf-Soviet identity developed in the Soviet Union, at times in opposition to state action, but firmly embedded within the ideological framework of the Soviet utopian project as a whole.

Gallou, Chrysanthi. "The cult of the dead in central Greece during the Mycenaean period." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2003. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/11184/.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to examine the evidence for the performance of a cult of the dead in LH III Greece with emphasis placed mainly on the material evidence from the typical Mycenaean tombs in the central areas of the Mycenaean dominion, viz. the Argolid, Korinthia, Attica, Boeotia and Euboea during the acme of Mycenaean civilization, that is the LH IIIA-B period. Chapter I presents the rationale and the aim of the thesis as well as the regional and chronological boundaries. Chapter II covers the theoretical background of the thesis by investigating general questions on ritual recognition in the archaeological record and on definitions of ancestor worship. A detailed presentation of the previous arguments on the Mycenaean cult of the dead is given and the 'artificial landscapes' of LH IIIB Mycenae are discussed with focus on Grave Circle A. New approaches and perspectives are proposed, namely a new definition of the term `cult of the dead' and a series of indicators of cultic activity to be applied in the study of the Mycenaean ancestor worship. Chapter III deals with funerary art and the artistic expression of Mycenaean eschatological beliefs. The Mycenaean belief in the survival of the soul and the journey of the dead to the Underworld, and the multiple function of terracotta figurines in LH III funerary agenda are assessed with this framework. The possibility of new perspectives and approaches via detailed contextual exploration of Mycenaean symbolic systems is discussed in the final part of this chapter. Chapter IV combines three broad issues, namely the location of cemeteries, tomb design and eschatological symbolism. Special reference is made to the connection between cemeteries and the religious significance of water and the rites of passage. The metaphysical symbolism of the tripartite plan of the typical Mycenaean tombs is also examined. Chapter V investigates the ritual act of attributing sacred honours and offerings to the ancestors by drawing parallels from contemporary religious observances. The first part deals with the significance of libation and sacrifice in honour of the dead. The second part explores the religious significance of secondary burial treatment and suggests that the custom signaled the starting point in Mycenaean ancestor worship. The existence of places especially designed for the performance of a cult of the dead is investigated with emphasis placed on the `Cenotaph' at Dendra. The objective of Chapter VI, which presents the conclusions of the thesis, is to place the evidence for the performance of a Mycenaean cult of the dead into a `historical' narrative and to investigate the reasons behind the establishment and practice of this cult.

Rodgers, Rob. "Staff development to embed inclusive learning for profoundly deaf learners in further education." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2007. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/10309/.

Full text
Abstract:
Inclusive learning for pupils and learners with Special Educational Needs (SEN) is being championed widely within the education sector, both in the compulsory and the post-compulsory stages. The context for this thesis is an exploration of how staff in the further education sector can be best prepared through staff development to support profoundly deaf learners. The thesis concentrates on the subject specialist who has the skills and experience to deliver their own subject but may not have the skills to deliver the subject to deaf learners. The exploration of staff development is done after undertaking an overview of the historical context and development of deaf education. Each of these historical phases has had an impact on deaf education and has implications for staff working with deaf learners. The politicised nature of deaf education is highlighted and reference made to the often entrenched views of professionals working in this area. Their vested interests can raise conflicts within the area and I suggest the need to remove the barriers to achievement caused by this clash. The thesis considered a range of staff development theories and selected two main models (Showers et al (1987) and Brockbank and McGill (1998)) to inform a possible model of staff development work. The staff development sessions and interviews provided data to refine understanding around this specialised area of work. The research has been undertaken using an action research approach with aspects of modified grounded theory. The research has involved colleagues from a variety of further education settings. Three main research themes emerged: first, finding the most suitable model of staff development to train subject specialists who will work with deaf learners; second, resolving some of the tensions between subject and communication specialists; third, offering suggestions about the content of staff development. Key features of staff development are identified and discussed and implications for staff development activity outlined. The thesis draws distinctions between deaf awareness and deaf equality and argues that this distinction plays a crucial role in staff development for inclusive learning. Two of the key players in supporting deaf students are the communication specialist and the subject specialist. The communication specialist is the professional who supports the access to the curriculum through appropriate communication. The subject specialist is the professional who delivers the curriculum and isn't normally able to present the curriculum using accessible communication. The thesis presents the exploration of the relationship between the two roles from the perspective of the subject specialist.

Abstract:
Guided and influenced by a famous follow-up study in criminology focused on desistance from crime, this dissertation studies desistance from crime, homelessness, and substance abuse. In the early 1990s, The New Orleans Homeless Substance Abusers Project (NOHSAP) was founded as an experiment funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) to uncover optimal treatment strategies for homeless alcoholics and drug addicts. The program ran for three years (1991-1993) and in those years, 670 homeless New Orleans men and women were admitted into treatment. Some of the original clients were followed for as long as 18 months, but none of them had been re-contacted since the mid-1990s. This dissertation involves finding these individuals and re-interviewing them, to discover what life trajectories they have taken some 17-19 years later. Guided by social bonding theory, this project shows what baseline factors and conditions explain variability in life outcomes. The methodology for this study consists of three main parts: 1) a quantitative analysis of mortality data; 2) a historical analysis of criminal histories and 3) in-depth interviews. Nested logistic regression models explained differences among those who have died (n = 91) and those still living. The same method was used to explain differences among those currently incarcerated (n = 56). Follow-up interviews were conducted with 32 individuals in a variety of settings including at their homes and in prisons. Findings from the quantitative results show that social bonding theory seems to be a weak explanation scheme among this population. Results from the qualitative data, however, are contrary and show social bonds to be crucial in the desistance process. Like Laub and Sampson's study, marriage and employment were strong predictors of desistance. Individuals interviewed tended to be sober, but disaffiliated with twelve-step meetings.; Other themes from the interviews involve presentation of self, the importance of religion, and a process of aging out of crime. Policy implications from these results focus on the importance of choosing a good life partner, the reduction of alcohol and drug use among abusers, and emphasizing stable employment.

Abstract:
>Magister Scientiae - MSc
This thesis describes a multi-disciplinary collaboration towards iterative development of a mobile communication tool to support a Deaf person in understanding usage directions for medication dispensed at a pharmacy. We are improving usability and correctness of the user interface. The tool translates medicine instruction given in English text to South African Sign Language videos, which are relayed to a Deaf user on a mobile phone. Communication between pharmacists and Deaf patients were studied to extract relevant exchanges between the two users. We incorporated the common elements of these dialogues to represent content in a veri able manner to ensure that the mobile tool relays the correct information to the Deaf user. Instructions are made available for a Deaf patient in sign language videos on a mobile device. A pharmacy setup was created to conduct trials of the tool with groups of end users, in order to collect usability data with recorded participant observation, questionnaires and focus group discussions. Subsequently, pre-recorded sign language videos, stored on a phone's memory card, were tested for correctness. Lastly we discuss the results and implications of the study and provide a conclusion to our research.

The coitus interruptus it is a worldwide practice, with estimated prevalence about 38 million couples per year. Deaf people confront a communicative barrier, which hinders access their knowledge about sexual and reproductive health. Dissemination of accessible information on the subjects is one of the elements that contribute to reviewed some taboos and, consequently, its exercise being possible, healthy and safe. Nursing has used assistive technologies for this public to promote health actions in the various educational settings. The objective was to construct accessible educational video roadmap for deaf people about the using of coitus interruptus, as well to validate a validation instrument of educational content. It is an assistive technology development study, elaborate in the period from February to December 2016, in the Laboratory of Communication in Health of the Nursing Department of the Federal University of CearÃ. Five content experts, three video education instructional technicians participated, eleven in health and education area for validation measurement instruments. Data obtained were organized in Excel and analyzed by SPSS software. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used through absolute, relative and intraclass correlation coefficients. Study approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Federal University of Cearà under opinion 1,520,285. About the overall rating of the video roadmap, was considered valid by all experts. It can be seen that both content experts and technicians have approved with modifications. Among the modifications suggested, there was an increase of updated and complete information about the proposed theme; replacement of technical terms by colloquial language; modification of script title; reduction of explanatory, expositive scenes and, consequently, an increase in the dynamism of the dialogues; and removal of reportage scenes. With regard to the Instrument of Validation of Educational Content, composed of three domains, namely objectives, structure and presentation and relevance, it was considered validated (ICC 0.877, p <0.001). In addition, the total instrument items presented good internal reliability regarding their domains. Thus, an Educational Content Validation Tool was considered a valid tool to be used in processes to guide the elaboration and validation of educational contents reliably. It is concluded that the construction of educational video roadmap as an assistive technology for the deaf contributes to the understanding of the coitus interruptus, being feasible and necessary to this population.

Abstract:
Genetic research has increasing power to analyse old biological remains. Biological traces of well-known historical persons can reveal personal information. The aim of this thesis is to investigate ethical concerns for the dead, within the biological, historical and archaeological sciences. In philosophy there is a long-running discussion on whether or not the dead can be wronged. The good name is proposed as a candidate of a posthumous interest. It is first of all argued that slandering per se can be wrong regardless of posthumous wronging of the dead. Secondly, the concept of change is investigated. It is argued that the property of having a reputation is a relational property. Hence a change in public opinion of a dead person, is also a change in the dead person’s reputation. The third contribution of this thesis is a constructive proposal for how a posthumous identity could be understood using narrative theory. Understanding identity through the life-story opens up the possibility of a gradual loss of identity after death, rather than absolute loss at the moment of death. Fragments of a person‘s narrative identity can persist in other peoples’ narratives, and for some historical persons, their narratives can be found long after their death. Finally, the implications of a remaining narrative identity for the dead are investigated in the area of archaeology and museumology. In the past 30 years, there has been increasing critique about present and past discriminatory handling of old human remains by archaeologists, in museums and in other institutions. Increasing numbers of requests have been made for repatriation or reburial of old human remains. Following an analysis of three current ethical guidelines in handling old human remains, changes to these guidelines are proposed based on a narrative method to a hypothetical claim of reburial.

Abstract:
This study investigated the hypothesis that delayed first language acquisition impedes syntactic learning in a second language. English syntactic skills of two deaf groups and one control group were investigated. One group of deaf subjects acquired a first language on schedule in early childhood, American Sign Language (ASL), and commenced learning English at school age. The other deaf group had significantly delayed first language acquisition, and began learning both ASL and English at school. Two English tasks were administered, grammatical judgement and syntactic comprehension. The stimuli were grammatical and ungrammatical exemplars of six types of syntactic structure ranging from simple to complex. The results supported the hypothesis and were consistent across all tasks. The delayed, first language learners were significantly less accurate in grammatical judgement and comprehension and significantly slower in response latency. These findings indicate that early first language acquisition is critical for successful second language syntactic learning.

Moosage, Riedwaan. "Missing-ness, history and apartheid-era disappearances: The figuring of Siphiwo Mthimkulu, Tobekile ‘Topsy’ Madaka and Sizwe Kondile as missing dead persons." University of the Western Cape, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/11394/6640.

Full text
Abstract:
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD
The argument of this dissertation calls for an abiding by missing-ness as it relates to apartheid-era disappearances. I am concerned with the ways in which the category missing is articulated in histories of apartheid-era disappearances through histories seeking to account for apartheid and how that category is enabled and /or constrained through mediating practices, processes and discourses such as that of forensics and history itself. My deployment of a notion of missing-ness therefore is put to work in underscoring notions of history and its relation to a category of missing persons in South Africa as they emerge and are figured through various discursive strategies constituted by and through apartheid’s violence and iterations thereof. I focus specifically on the enforced disappearances of Siphiwo Mthimkulu, Tobekile ‘Topsy’ Madaka and Sizwe Kondile and the vicarious ways in which they have been produced and (re)figured in a postapartheid present. Mthimkulu and Madaka were abducted, tortured, interrogated, killed and their bodies disposed through burning by apartheid’s security police in 1982. In 2007 South Africa’s Missing Persons Task Team exhumed commingled burnt human fragments at a farm, Post Chalmers. After two years of forensic examinations, those remains were identified as most likely those of Mthimkulu and Madaka. Their commingled remains were reburied in 2009 during an official government sanctioned Provincial re-burial. Kondile was similarly abducted in 1981 and after being imprisoned, tortured, interrogated and killed, his physical remains were burnt. The MPTT has been unsuccessful in locating and thus exhuming his remains for re-burial. Sizwe Kondile remains missing. Missing-ness as I evoke it serves to signal the lack and excess as potentiality and instability of histories accounting for the condition and symptom of being missing. The productivity of deploying missing-ness and an abidance to it in the ways I argue is precisely in not explicitly naming it, but rather by holding onto its elusiveness by marking the contours of discourses on absence-presence, those which it simultaneously touches upon and is constitutive of. Articulating it thus is to affirm missing-ness as a question that I argue, be put to work and abided by.

Kleinschmidt, Timothy Paul. "The employment requirements of disabled persons : a study of the development of state supported employment provision." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/772.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis deals with the historical background concerning the development of disability-related employment measures and the employment exclusion experienced by disabled persons. In particular, the enquiry focuses upon the early post-war period up until the introduction in 1997 of the New Deal for Disabled Persons. The thesis postulates that: 1. major policy shifts within the Employment Service Disability Services (ESDS) in the early 1990s did not sufficiently reflect the employment integration needs of disabled persons; in spite of a major social values shift, to welfare-to-work measures for disabled persons these measures proved to be problematic; problems existed because of the following three inter-related negative social factors; 3.1 lack of adequate neeeds assessment and response to disabled persons labour-market requirements; 3.2 lack of support for work capability enhancement; and 3.3 lack of suitable work-integrated environments, accessible jobs and adequate socially 'adjusted' working conditions. Although the study was carried out prior to the New Deal for Disabled Persons (NDDP), the main concerns raised by this study, regarding disabled persons labour market integration needs, would still appear to prevail. However, the post- NDDP developments and implications for the employment of disabled persons under the NDDP would require further research that is beyond the ambit of the present study which terminated prior to the introduction of the New Deal. The study examined national developments of disability policy of the Employment Service (ES), in the light of transitions within service philosophy during the 1990s. This took the form of a major shift on the part of policy makers of the 'position' of disabled persons to mainstream labour markets. Prior to the early 1990s, the position of disabled persons was largely one of relative labour-market marginality. Many disabled persons experienced social alienation, denoting exclusion from or restricted entry into employment, on terms that were often significant of a position of exploitative 'integration'. With the collapse in the 1980s and 1990s of the Keynes-Beveridge Welfare State, the outcome for disabled persons was a reconceptuality of their relationship to labour markets. This factor was driven by rising state-benefit dependency and decommodification. The perspective of the New Right, with its anti-statedependency ideology, ushered in a new regime wherein disabled persons were to be exposed to similar labour-market rigours as the non-disabled. While the two tier disability-employment regulatory system, set in place by Tomlinson (1942), remained relatively intact, the new requirements of what has been described as a 'Schumpeterian Workfare State' (Jessop, 1992,1994), ensured that the ES, Disability Service, faced a need for radical reform. It is the framework and conception of this revised approach, to disabled persons labour-market involvement, that constitutes the basis of the present study. The research ' contribution to disability and employment lies in the presentation of employment service users' own perceptions of the suitability of the ESDS. However debate presented, maintains that the fundamental relationship of disabled persons to employment, without corresponding change towards the social values perceptions of disabled persons, ensures that employment associated alienation will remain intact.

Rose, Petra M. "The Effects of Family and Education Backgrounds on the Self-Identification of Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Persons in Utah." DigitalCommons@USU, 2000. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/4815.

Abstract:
This study examined the effects of family and educational background factors on three dimensions of social identity among 35 deaf and hard-of-hearing respondents in Utah. Three dimensions of social identity-were distinguished: self-definition (i.e., the degree to which a respondent defined himself or herself as deaf), self-evaluation (i.e., the degree to which a respondent attached value and emotional significance to identifying himself or herself as deaf), and group introjection (i.e., the degree of commitment, belonging, and loyalty a respondent attached to membership in the Deaf community). Semi-structured, videotaped interviews were conducted with 35 deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals in Utah. Respondents were recruited via snowball sampling techniques. The results of the qualitative data analysis showed that the respondents identified themselves as: (a) non-deaf (i.e., little identification with a Deaf identity or with the Deaf community), (b) marginalized (i.e., identifying with neither a hearing identity nor with a Deaf identity), and (c) big "D" Deaf (i.e., strong identification with a Deaf identity and the Deaf community). Strong family support, for example, family members who used sign language, was associated with strong self-identification as Deaf, positive self-evaluation, and strong group introjection. Similarly, supportive educational experiences, for example, attendance at a residential school for deaf students, were associated with strong self-identification as Deaf, positive self-evaluation, and strong group introjection. Policy implications regarding parent education, school teacher in-service training, and medIcal services were discussed.

Abstract:
Developmental Sentence Scoring (DSS) and the Language Assessment, Remediation, and Screening Procedure (LARSP) are among the more common analyses for syntax and morphology, and automated versions of these analyses have been shown to be effective. This study measured the accuracy of automated DSS and LARSP on the written English output of six prelingually deaf young adults, ranging in age from 18 to 32 years. The samples were analyzed using the DSS and LARSP programs on Computerized Profiling; manual analysis was then performed on the samples. Point-by-point accuracy for DSS and for each level of LARSP was reported. Characteristics of the participants' language at the clause, phrase, and word levels were described and discussed, including the implications for clinicians working with this population.

Deaf individuals experience significant obstacles to participating in behavioral health research when careful consideration is not given to accessibility in the design of study methodology. To inform such considerations, we conducted a secondary analysis of a mixed-methods study that explored 16 Deaf trauma survivors’ help-seeking experiences. Our objective was to identify key findings and qualitative themes from consumers' own words that can be applied to the design of behavioral clinical trials methodology. In many ways, the themes that emerged are what we would expect of any research participant, Deaf or hearing – a need for communication access, empathy, respect, strict confidentiality procedures, trust, and transparency of the research process. However, additional considerations must be made to better recruit, retain, and engage Deaf trauma survivors. We summarize our findings in a “Checklist for Designing Deaf Behavioral Clinical Trials” to operationalize the steps researchers should take to apply Deaf-friendly approaches in their empirical work.

This study aimed at checking pedagogic practices used in the process of teaching the written language in special class for deaf pupils. The research was carried out in an elementary school special class, with nine deaf pupils, in a school of the Public Municipal Network that has an explicit schooling policy for these children. For much, data were collected in the academic year of 2005, through video recording of Portuguese Language classes in October, from the material produced by the pupils in the literacy activities developed in classroom and the records of the two-monthly evaluations done by the teacher. Data analysis was carried based on the contributions of Ferreiro (1986 and 1991), in which refers to the distinction between oral language and / or signs language and written language, and of Vygotsky (2002), concerning the interpersonal nature of the initial acquisition of written language, through interactions that must be rich in meanings. In addition to these authors, for the specific field of deaf persons literacy, this study is supported substantially on Soares (1999 and 2004), in addition to Bueno (2001 and 2004). The main findings in the research were: the developed activities took as a principle the perspective of writing as transcription of the signs language; centralizing the teaching of writing through nominations of objects and events; restriction to the copy, when writing does is not presented based on the language of signs or the digital alphabet, indicating that the fact that the pupils copy texts seems, for the teacher, to be sufficient so that they may acquire writing. To the extent that the production of writing was so deprived of its characteristics, on one hand, in terms of appropriation of its basic elements and, on the other hand, by the facilitation of the responses through the transcription of the digital alphabet, where it will be verified that, in fact, the pupil is not being taught to write, but, on the contrary, writing serves more for they to fix and incorporate the language of signs.

Abstract:
In this study we aimed to investigate the process through which players of video games situate, and form an understanding of their presence within the virtual game environment. This study specifically investigates this process in games played through a first person perspective with the intention of minimising the amount of visual information provided the participants. For this purpose we created two scenarios within a videogame environment specifically design for the study. A total of thirteen participants took part in the study, and after each season a semi structured interview was performed. In a qualitative content analysis we identified patterns and commonalities ascertaining to our line of questioning, and conclude that while the player-presence relationship would appear to be largely dependent on the individual’s type of play, the varying focus on either narratology or ludology in our two scenarios did indeed influence the participants to approach this relationship similarly within the separate groups. Finally we defined four types of player-presence relationship, and how they can be said to relate to the varying ludonarrative dynamics within the two specified genres, as well as the varying types of play observed amongst the participants in our study.

Abstract:
The aim of this dissertation project is to describe the ways people experience parenting a deaf child who uses a cochlear implant. Within a framework of social science studies of disability this is done by combining approaches using ethnographic and netnographic methods of participant observation with an interview study. Interpretations are based on the first-person perspective of 19 parents against the background of their related networks of social encounters of everyday life. The netnographic study is presented in composite conversations building on exchanges in 10 social media groups, which investigates the parents’ meaning-making in interaction with other parents with similar living conditions. Ideas about language, technology, deafness, disability, and activism are explored. Lived parenting refers to the analysis of accounts of orientation and what 'gets done' in respect to these ideas in situations where people utilize the senses differently. In the results, dilemmas surrounding language, communication and cochlear implantation are identified and explored. The dilemmas extend from if and when to implant, to decisions about communication modes, intervention approaches, and schools. An important finding concerns the parents’ orientations within the dilemmas, where most parents come up against antagonistic conflicts. There are also examples found of a development process in parenting based on lived, in-depth experiences of disability and uncertainty which enables parents to transcend the conflictive atmosphere. This process is analyzed in terms of a social literacy of dis/ability.

Abstract:
During the Great Depression of the 1930s, millions of Americans suffered from long term unemployment and subsistence poverty while the federal government's New Deal attempted to address the problems of poverty. But the rural poor were affected by a kind of chronic poverty that would prove more difficult to address with government-run relief efforts. Because traditional methods of relief from poverty were embedded in the socioeconomic culture of rural America, it was not always possible to apply the same federal relief methods in the countryside as in the urban areas of the nation. The rural poor stood to benefit from modern social relief services and, for a brief period, it seemed as if those services would become available for their benefit. However, as I argue in this dissertation, economic conservatism hindered the potential effectiveness of the two-year federal emergency relief program. From 1933 to 1935, the United States federal government backed the unprecedented expenditure of billions of dollars in direct emergency relief. Abiding the advice of prominent social workers, the government created an emergency relief program to address the alarming needs of impoverished Americans. These programs affected those who suffered the effects of long term unemployment and those trapped in rural poverty. The federal government created social welfare policies that had the power to ease the misery of those forced to subsist at the bottom. Government benefits and impoverished beneficiaries met through social work. For a brief span of time, the New Deal emergency relief period of early 1933 to mid-1935 offered an opportunity for social workers to promote a nationalized system of social welfare. This is an understudied aspect of American history, and is the focus of this dissertation.

Abstract:
This work represents the reflection and the knowledge researched and built over what happened when a communicator decided to develop an audiovisual communication project within a community – the deaf community - whose the communication with the outsiders is such a barrier for them. To get there with 'my' project, believing that would be good 'for them' was pure pretension. The development of the project - its time, its way, its expression, its language – would have to be a way that could not be set by me. To recover me from the impact of this obvious and almost ingenuous evidence, I looked for orientation on the concepts about culture of Clifford Geertz, about identity of Stuart Hall, about thought and language of Vygotsky, about history of Peter Burke, about narratives with Hayden White and Eclea Bosi, on the exemplar and inspiring histories of Oliver Sacks, on the communication Sign Language learning and, mainly, on the companionship with the deaf community. More observing and being observed than proposing interventions that could 'disarrange' a culture built with meaningful difficulties. The main part descript in this work was the process that guided me to the experience I’ve been living today, 'invited' to build new conquests, now WITH the community. The audiovisual result was a video made with pictures of the Deaf Association of Sao Paulo, with no sound, limited by dates: the Association 50-year party’s, and the delivery of my dissertation´s. The absence of sound doesn’t represent only to press the 'mute' bottom of the remote control, but another way of communication and perceiving the world. My work, indeed, is beginning now.

Abstract:
This thesis is an analysis of the use of combined concepts of covenant and priesthood in some late Second Temple period Jewish and Jewish-Christian texts. In this thesis I investigate 1 and 2 Maccabees, Dead Sea Scrolls, and Hebrews, to see the various ways in which these Second Temple compositions have articulated the combined concepts of covenant and priesthood on the basis of their treatment of various biblical and extra-biblical traditions. The elaborate articulations of the combined concepts of covenant and priesthood in these texts partly reflect the concern of the Second Temple Jewish authors: how significant the priestly institutions and priesthood were, not only in terms of cultic matters, but also in terms of political and identity concerns. By means of this study, I hope to demonstrate that the combined concept of covenant and priesthood is necessary for a better understanding of some Second Temple texts.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to analyze the distribution, forms, and function(s) of iron amulets deposited in the late Iron Age gravefields of Lovö, with the goal of ascertaining how (and so far as possible why) these objects were utilized in rituals carried out during and after burials. Particular emphasis is given to re-interpreting the largest group of iron amulets, the iron amulet rings, in a more relational and practice-focused way than has heretofore been attempted. By framing burial analyses, questions of typology, and evidence of ritualized actions in comparison with what is known of other cult sites in Mälardalen specifically– and theorized about the cognitive landscape(s) of late Iron Age Scandinavia generally– a picture of iron amulets as inscribed objects made to act as catalytic, protective, and mediating agents is brought to light.

Abstract:
Earlier studies of persons with deafness (D) and/or deafblindness (DB) have primarily focused on the mobility and communication problems. The purpose of the present study was to develop technology for monitoring aids to improve the ability of persons with D and/or DB to detect, identify, and perceive direction of events that produce sounds in their surroundings. The purpose was achieved stepwise in four studies. In Study I, the focus was on hearing aids for persons with residual low frequency hearing. In Study II-IV, the focus was on vibratory aids for persons with total D. In Study I, six signal processing algorithms (calculation methods) based on two principles, transposition and modulation, were developed and evaluated regarding auditory identification of environmental sounds. Twenty persons with normal hearing listened to 45 environmental sounds processed with the six different algorithms and identified them in three experiments. In Exp. 1, the sounds were unknown and the subjects had to identify them freely. In Exp. 2 and 3, the sounds were known and the subjects had to identify them by choosing one of 45 sounds. The transposing algorithms showed better results (median value in Exp. 3, 64%-69%) than the modulating algorithms (40%-52%) did, and they were good candidates for implementing in a hearing aid for persons with residual low frequency hearing. In Study II, eight algorithms were developed based on three principles, transposition, modulation, and filtration – in addition to No Processing as reference, and evaluated for vibratory identification of environmental sounds. The transposing algorithms and the modulating algorithms were also adapted to the vibratory thresholds of the skin. Nineteen persons with profound D tested the algorithms using a stationary, wideband vibrator and identified them by choosing one of 10 randomly selected from the list of 45 sounds. One transposing algorithm and two modulating algorithms showed better (p<0.05) scores than did the No Processing method. Two transposing and three modulating algorithms showed better (p<0.05) scores than did the filtering algorithm. Adaptation to the vibratory thresholds of the skin did not improve the vibratory identification results. In Study III, the two transposing algorithms and the three modulating algorithms with the best identification scores in Study II, plus their adapted alternative, were evaluated in a laboratory study. Five persons from Study II with profound D tested the algorithms using a portable narrowband vibrator and identified the sounds by choosing one of 45 sounds in three experiments (Exp. 1, 2, and 3). In Exp. 1, the sounds were pre-processed and directly fed to the vibrator. In Exp. 2 and 3, the sounds were presented in an acoustic test room, without or with background noise (SNR=+5 dB), and processed in real time. Five of the algorithms had acceptable results (27%-41%) in the three experiments and constitute candidates for a miniaturized vibratory aid (VA). The algorithms had the same rank order in both tests in the acoustic room (Exp. 2, and 3), and the noise did not worsen the identification results. In Study IV, the portable vibrotactile monitoring aid (with stationary processor) for detection, identification and directional perception of environmental sounds was evaluated in a field study. The same five persons with profound D as in Study III tested the aid using a randomly chosen algorithm, drawn from the five with the best results in Study III, in a home and in a traffic environment. The persons identified 12 events at home and five events in a traffic environment when they were inexperienced (the events were unknown) and later when they were experienced (the events were known). The VA consistently improved the ability with regard to detection, identification and directional perception of environmental sounds for all five persons. It is concluded that the selected algorithms improve the ability to detect, and identify sound emitting events. In future, the algorithms will be implemented in a low frequency hearing aid for persons with low frequency residual hearing or in a fully portable vibratory monitoring aid, for persons with profound D or DB to improve their ability to sense the environment.

Lebret, Audrey. "Prélèvements d’organes et droits fondamentaux aux États-Unis et en Europe." Thesis, Paris 2, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019PA020046.

Full text
Abstract:
The removal of organs for the purpose of transplantation involves damaging a human body in order to save another person. This intervention calls for an analysis of the interactions between the donor and the awaiting patient’s fundamental rights within organ donation norms. Born at the same time in the United States and in Europe, organ transplantation has to deal with the same challenges nowadays, in spaces based on the free movement of persons and goods. The objective is to identify and compare the fundamental rigts of the living and deceased organ donor, in Europe and in the United States, and to analyze their interactions with the potential recipient’s rights. The thesis argues that living organ donation norms ensure a convergence of those rights by promoting a solidarian autonomy, despite some limitations. On the other hand, deceased organ donation norms have a hard time to ensure a balance of rights, either because some rights cannot be the objet of a compromise or because the rights are shared between the deceased person, the State and the deceased’s relatives

Introduction: Paraplegia may be caused by physical deficiency as a result of a spinal cord injury, often being necessary the use of wheelchair for locomotion by the injured person. On top of reduced mobility and other clinical consequences, people with spinal cord injury might have to deal with emotional and social impacts. Epidemiological studies show that most of spinal cord injury patients are young male adults, what makes returning to work an extremely important topic. Furthermore, the relevance of this study is justified/highlighted by the recent movement for inclusion of handicapped people in the work environment, as outlined in the quote law in Brazil. Reduced mobility, as well as some environmental barriers (physical barriers and society s atittudes) may be risk factors that could negatively affect the development of these young adults, once they could alter their roles in their families and in the society (socially and professionally). There comes the importance of studying these people s resilience which involves the ability to cope and positively adapt when dealing with adversities, and their capacity to learn from these situations. Returning to work might represent the re-start of their personal development after the spinal cord injury has occurred. Objectives: to collect social-demographics and resilience characteristics of 60 participants with spinal cord injury, to compare these characteristics between 30 worker with 30 nonworker participants, and to collect the psychological aspects of this study sample from the resilience results. Method: A Social-Demographic Questionnaire and the Questionário de Resiliência Adulto Reivich-Shatté/Barbosa were used to collect the data. The data statistical analysis showed the social-demographic and resilience characteristics of the study sample, as well as the comparison of these characteristics between the two groups. From the data analysis, it was possible to collect some psychological aspects of the study sample. Results: the study sample showed similar characteristics to the epidemiological studies done with spinal cord injury population as it relates to sex, age and how the spinal cord injury was acquired. When comparing the two groups, no significant differences were found for the resilience factors. However, the data showed that environmental factors (physical barriers and society s attitude), and the difficulty to have autonomy are factors that could make it more challenging for people with spinal cord injury to return to work. It also was possible to collect some psychological aspects of the sample based on the resilience factors results. That showed the importance of the psychologists in helping people with spinal cord injury to deal with their emotions and to better develop their resilience factors. This would allow them to return to their personal development, including their capacity to rebuild a new professional identity

Abstract:
The Papyrus Vatican inv. No 38603 is a hieratic Book of the Dead dated of the late period, coming probably from the city of Thebes and containing a number of textual and iconographic peculiarities. His comprehensive study is undertaken using a detailed presentation, a complete translation, a commentary on each of its component texts, a contextualization within the late documentation of the type and a paleography. These elements can highlight various aspects of Egyptian funerary beliefs of that time. On the other hand, they allow for closer dating of papyrus around 300 BC. and put the document in a specific context in strong relationship with religion and cults of Osiris that develop at Thebes since the Third Intermediate Period

Abstract:
The economic disaster known as the Great Depression struck Grayson County, Texas, in 1929, and full economic recovery did not come until the close of World War II. However, the people of Grayson benefited greatly between 1933 and 1946 from the myriad spending programs of the New Deal, the building of the Denison Dam that created Lake Texoma, and the establishment of Perrin Army Air Field. Utilizing statistical data from the United States Census and the Texas Almanac, this thesis analyzes the role of government spending‐federal, state, and local‐in the economic recovery in Grayson County.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the execution of alimony in Family Law, through an organized and current view of the institute. The co-existence of several law provisions which rule or affect the execution of alimony justifies the necessity of this study, to put in order the provisions in a way that all of them are made usefull to grant the execution being as effective as possible. Another justification is the arising, over the last years, of legal renovation, as well as the promulgation of new legal Statutes, making necessary a review of the concepts regarding the topic. Every hypothesis of the execution of alimony in Family Law is analyzed, investigating its singularities and controversies, always searching for a systematic coherency and for the effectiveness of the process. The method used is the doctrinal and jurisprudential research, constantly investigating the set of problems, using, when possible and relevant, data from judicial practice. Such method allows the study to reach its purpose, giving a current and systematic view of the execution on alimony

Abstract:
An exploratory study was undertaken to research the effect of hearing impairment on employment and socialisation of black hearing impaired persons and the role of social workers and job placement officers in supporting these hearing impaired persons in their work situation. The Council and Affiliates should disseminiate information on the effect of deafness on employment to the public and also embark on social work services to Deaf employees. Future socio-demographic data with a central register of interpreters and post-lingually hearing impaired employees should be embarked on by the Council as well as the effect of preparation of the hearing impaired for the open labour market and environmental barriers on their employment opportunities.

Everyone is unique. No one has an absolutely same life story with others. This qualitative study is chiefly concerned with the life story of a deaf person. Semi-structured interviews with sigh language were held in this research. It’s really not an easy mission to piece up her life story. The story was not only gathered from the research participant, but also from her mother and her sister (the researcher of this study). It will show us how special or ordinary she is. There are some things found out in this study: 1. Deaf persons depend on their hands to talk, to work, to do anything whole their life, the pair of hands are so important for anyone of them. 2. A deaf person can enjoy her/his deaf life without hurt or predicaments in Taiwan, so can their parents. 3. Deaf children’s future depends on the decision of their parents. So the decision should be made as possible as cautiously. 4. Parents of deaf children need all options for their reference to make an important decision for their deaf kid. The information needs to be provided completely with benefit and defects. 5. Deaf persons have demand of communicating with hearing people. They also have demand to be accepted and understood, too. According to the above conclusions, there are some suggestions for the researchers who want to interview deaf people, the parents of deaf children, and the government.

Lovitt, Sean. "The book, the mirror, and the living dead : necromancy and the early modern period." Thesis, 2009. http://spectrum.library.concordia.ca/976589/1/MR63081.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
In early modem England, necromancy was a general term applied to the practice of black magic. Manuals for summoning demons, the dead, and other reprobate apparitions were available to the practitioners of this art, and descriptions of necromancy appeared in other genres ranging from theory to fiction. What the necromancer practiced in secret became a popular narrative made up of elements gleaned from the writings of supporters and detractors of magic. Orthodox Christians, Occultists, and skeptics all denounced the activities of necromancers by publishing descriptive accounts. These divergent bodies of literature inadvertently diffused a legend of the necromancer into public discourse. This thesis explores the curiosity and wonder that these narratives of necromancy provoked as they were staged in the theater. I examine Christopher Marlowe's Doctor Faustus as the culmination of public concepts of necromancy and, in turn, I elucidate what this play has to say about the necromantic characteristics--specifically, taboo interests and excessive accumulation--of the surrounding culture. Likewise, I investigate the presence of necromancy in William Shakespeare's Hamlet in order to analyze the fantastic characteristics of the Ghost and its influence on Hamlet's actions in the play. The fantasy of necromancy--of delving into taboo subjects and bringing forth aberrant apparitions--materializes in drama, articulating curiosity and wonder as affects rather than as the technical instruments of epistemology.

Abstract:
South Africa has a dearth of deaf appropriate assistive resources – giving rise to deaf adolescents leaving school early and poor adult outcomes. These factors are negatively influenced by the interaction of other elements such as the inadequate cultural and social nurturing and lack of support. Approached from a bio-ecological model, to pro-actively address the support needed by deaf and hard-of-hearing persons to empower them to develop the capacity to withstand the challenges they have to endure, to stand up to and resist the negative ideas about what they are capable of. In this study, major risk factors were identified as communication deprivation and unpreparedness of parents to raise a deaf child appropriately where mediating factors were identified as social-emotional competence and deaf teaching assistants at South African Schools for the Deaf. The main findings of this study were that the need for early training of parents, access to Sign Language, deaf role models and social-emotional training in SA schools for the Deaf are proposed pathways to well-being.

Bibby, Mary Ann W. "Teachers’ perspectives of giftedness among students who are deaf or hard of hearing." Thesis, 1993. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/1819.

Full text
Abstract:
This qualitative, exploratory study describes and interprets the perspectives of giftedness of twelve teachers who work with Deaf and hard of hearing students in a variety of educational settings across Canada. Using in-depth interviews, the resulting twenty-five hours of audio tapes were transcribed and analyzed line by line using procedures suggested by Giorgi and Marton. The supporting literature came from four major areas: (a) the construct of giftedness; (b) giftedness among the disabled population; (c) giftedness among the Deaf and hard of hearing population; and (d) theory related to teachers' knowledge and perspectives. Analysis of the data resulted in presentation of the findings from two perspectives: teachers' understandings of the meanings of giftedness and the process through which these teachers appeared to have gained their knowledge. Teachers' practical knowledge was portrayed in detailed stories of forty-three hard of hearing or Deaf students whom they believed to be gifted and in the way they described the students' achieving, learning and behaving in classroom interactions. The teachers' conceptually oriented knowledge was described as they reflected upon the meanings they associated with giftedness. The teachers' knowledge of giftedness was compared to that found in the gifted literature at both the practical and theoretical levels. Through interpretations derived from daily interactions with students and drawing on knowledge gained from personal experience, these teachers constructed perspectives of giftedness. The process that emerged illustrated the teachers' use of comparison groups as ways of gaining insight about the students and teachers' ideas about the use of labeling. The teachers' perspectives suggest that Deaf and hard of hearing students are gifted in ways similar but not identical to hearing students. The abilities of these students appear to be different from others in the "handicapped-gifted" literature and their needs are unique. The teachers' more conceptually oriented ideas also appeared to be similar but not identical to theoretical definitions of giftedness. The findings support collaboration between teachers and researchers to explore ways in which teachers come to recognize and understand gifted students. Future research must also explore the special educational needs of students who are dealing with the effects of having a hearing loss and being gifted.
