Abstract:
<strong>Background:</strong><strong> </strong>The deaf-dumb is a permanent disability, this group needs intensive efforts to find out how to solve their problems and provide for their needs also teachers have an active role in this. <strong>Objective: </strong>To assess the instruction ability of Teachers regarding Problems and Needs of students at the institutes of deaf and dumb in middle Euphrates cities. <strong>Methodology: </strong>A descriptive quantitative study was carried out in order to achieve the stated objective. Study Sample A non-probability Purposive sample of (28) teachers of deaf-dumb who working at deaf-dumb institutes in Cities. The study tools consist of two parts, (1( demographic characteristics; )2( ten question to assess deaf-dumb teachers performance toward instruction strategies. The SPSS version 24.0 application is used to analyze the study results. <strong>Results</strong>: The study results show that was found moderate level teachers performance towards deaf-mute students. <strong>Conclusions</strong>: Most of the study sample are within the fourth age group (45-49) years old and (75%) female. Also they have a moderate level performance towards guiding deaf-dumb students about instruction ability toward common problems and needs.

In ancient times, the Sign language system was developed to eradicate the problem in dumb and deaf people and make them gain knowledge for proper interaction with the world. Learning sign language involved creating sign language using fingers movement and movement in hand. It is been observed that dumb and deaf people feel themselves inferior to the society and do not interact much with other people. There are many projects tried to Develop to make things beneficial for them but still we are unable to create a better support for DnD people. There where a lot of projects developed but the costing of the project was very high which cannot be affordable at any scale. Projects developed by MIT students cost more than 2 lakh rupees and there where many other efforts made to help but all went in vain as the biggest problem raised was project being cost efficient and for a developing country like India creating a product that cause 2 lakh for a person is not at all possible. From the literature it is known that, in India it is true that computers have not reached even normal schools in the rural and remote areas. Therefore, providing computers for Dumb and deaf children to learn and use them seems certainly farfetched. Therefore, we got an idea to design and develop user-friendly, cost- effective learning aid for Dumb and deaf children. The project aims to design a learning aid for the Dumb and deaf people in English language which infuses a sense of playing while learning. The proposed idea is implemented on an Arduino Microcontroller interfaced with LCD, Gyroscope and mobile device as output devices. The proposed model develops a glove that can Convert sign language to human voice and which can be understandable by us and this will definitely build the bridge between us and make Dumb and Deaf people a part of our society and which can make better for mankind. The biggest challenge is to reduce the cost as much as possible and keep things more available for the society

Abstract:
College English refers to a type of English course offered to non-English majors at tertiary level in mainland China. In recent years, however, College English has been criticised as ‘deaf and dumb English’ (Wu, 2004; Zhang, 2002) because of Chinese students’ perceived weaknesses in listening and speaking. As Zhang (2002), Director of the Department of Higher Education in the Chinese Ministry of Education (MOE), explains, ‘Chinese university students can neither speak English nor understand it when they hear the language spoken’ (p. 4). To improve the situation, Zhang urges that ‘[w]hile reading has to be reduced properly, listening and speaking should be increased in College English textbooks’ (ibid.: 5). In other words, it is listening and speaking rather than reading that should be emphasised.

Abstract:
The Holy Quran encourages the functioning brain to reach the truth and understand this universe by using mental habits: “For the worst of beasts in the sight of Allah are the deaf and the dumb, - those who do not understand” (22:8). In contrast, science emphasizes the importance of mind habits in learning and applying it peacefully to humanity. However, recent studies have not investigated the distribution of Holy Quran verses in developing scientific habits of mind. This research aimed to assess the effect of pondering over the Holy Quran verses on the students’ scientific habits of mind. The study participants consist of 94 science students in grade 9 in from two schools in Oman. This study highlights the importance of subjects’ integration and enhances meaningful learning. This semi-experimental research adopted Solomon four groups and applied well-developed two tools, namely, habits of mind scale and semi-instructed interview. The results showed there is significant difference in the post-test mean scores of scientific habits of mind between non-pretested groups compared to the experimental group. The combination between science subject and Holy Quran verses related to science enhances students’ scientific habits of mind. Thus, activating verses in science classes should be encouraged in science curricula.

<strong>ABSTRACT</strong> The main reasons for climate change which are explained in this article are as follows: -Climate pollution by gases with CO2 emission and Greenhouse Effect; Climate contamination of viruses with viruses from nature by animals or glaciers when thawing or produced in Laboratories; Induced Climate Change due to meteorological weapons with high intensity radio waves to produce rains, hurricanes and possible induction of earthquakes; Climate pollution by radiation due wars with irreversible consequences in the climate and Nuclear Winter; Climate Change due the explosion of missiles and atomic weapons in the oceans; Climate Change due the natural cyclical phases of the Earth affected by the cyclical variations of the Earth&#39;s magnetic field lines which can be affected by the severe cyclical activity of the sun due storms and sunspot because of the combustion that occurs inside the Sun which is due to the gravitational instabilities produced by the planets of the solar system, asteroids or the Comet Planet; Climate Change due to the invading Comet Planet into the solar system that affects with its gravitational field to the sun with solar storms and the planets with variation of the magnetic field lines affecting the climate, earthquakes and activation of volcanoes and indeed with the entry of many meteors and asteroids to the Earth; Climate change due to the Arm of God Allah explaining all the above reasons being more evident in times of Tribulation. Thus, the organizations responsible for the proliferation of nuclear weapons (OIEA) have played an ineffective and passive (cover-up) role, which has caused the risk of a third nuclear world war to be imminent); Through the war against terror:&nbsp; however and actually, this is a false speech used to point to countries that oppose the control or directive of the powers and that have a culture or political structure different from that of the powers and later make conflict and war to later control them or usurp their resources (some Arab and Muslim countries, for example, US, Irak, Lybia and blaming an entire country for terrorism and occupying for years (Afganist&aacute;n)).&nbsp; In this way and actually, some countries have developed nuclear weapons (North Korea, Iran) to protect themselves in some way and thus, the same thing does not happen to them as to the countries mentioned above (Irak, Lybia) and that have been destroyed with the false discourse of the war against terror. In this way, the best thing is to have good relations with all the countries of the Earth which are again summed in the Bible [1] in a message: Love your brother (all human beings) as yourself! (Mt.22-39) (and not to go around the Earth pointing out terrorists to any country that opposes its guidelines).&nbsp; Therefore, it is possible to reduce the economic resources for the war against terror which can be used to reduce poverty and inequity in human beings; Through the war against drugs:&nbsp; there are many other substances and products consumed by humans that can be harmful to health and that are allowed and have not become a vice (when something is forbidden:&nbsp; this increases the interest in obtaining it explained from the beginning of creation in Genesis [1]: an apple from the tree of good and evil in the garden of Eden: Adam and Eve).&nbsp;&nbsp; In addition, many countries have allowed the use of certain types of drugs for medical purposes (Uruguay, Bolivia) where drug use has gone unnoticed in these countries; Through religi&oacute;n:&nbsp; with a structure of religion that tries to control the population through a guideline and speeches that obey the Vatican and the actual governments of each country (which is evident when there are countries such as Nicaragua that do not follow a guideline of the church and the elite and then, the religion surprisingly actively intervenes in politics): the conclusion is reached and to which many humans have reached, that religion is a power most actually used (along with political and economic power); Through political power by means of the false argument used by politicians to reduce inequity and poverty: &nbsp;where a large amount of resources and money have been allocated to the political powers and rulers of many countries for centuries by the respective organizations responsable (FMI BM) without any results and in many countries poverty and inequity have increased. Besides, the bureaucracy is a structure of order and rules of management and administration used within the governments of each country that contribute to the inefficiency and manipulation of the required procedures in human life that ultimately affect the life of each human being when they require formalities that end up being complicated and time-consuming.&nbsp; Then, this power structure in politics, economics, and religion for the control of the population is ineffective and obeys the interests of the dark who control humans on the Earth, and is used ineffectively by the rulers (governing) of the countries who come to power precisely with the false discourse of reducing poverty and inequity; Through the pretext of climate change:&nbsp; severe climate change due to the emission of CO2 and the greenhouse effect is a complete fallacy. The world organizations involved with the climate (ONU) try to make humanity believe that this is the reason for the severe climatic changes that the human being has experienced on the Earth to obtain economic resources and avoid mentioning God in control of the Earth and course the climate and to avoid mentioning the Omnipotence of God [1] in the control of the Earth and the climate: the severe climate change is frequently due to solar storms and variations in the magnetic field lines of the Earth because of gravitational variations in the solar system or due to the entry of an asteroid or Comet Planet what is controlled and all the Universe by God.&nbsp; Therefore, the climate change is controlled by the Eternal God (wich is explained in the Bibles with a lot of examples with Moses, Josue, Hezekiah) and thus, this is better to use the resources and money for so-called climate change to reduce poverty and inequity in the Earth and increase equity in humans: Human Beings must not believe everything said by the organizations and individuals that control the humans in the Earth and that obey the directions imposed within the matrix triangle of control of the Earth; Through the sport by means of the persuasive manipulation of observers or attendees at sporting events through commercials programs, commentators (hidden words and numbers in speech), players participating in the match: with gestures or sequence of plays, numbers, words or details in the players uniform, referees (make decisi&oacute;n of plays in favor of a team purposely: false bad arbitration) or leading organizers committing sports corruption not applying the rules or discriminating players (Serbian, Russian and Belarusian tennis players at tennis competitions due to some tennis organizations) or teams (Russian sports clubs and inclusive the Russian national team due FIFA decision) at convenience.&nbsp; discriminating and not allowing the participation of tennis players (including top tennis players), Football Countries and Sport Clubs in international competitions for reasons of restrictions due to the epidemic, conflict or war (including countries that organized previous World Cups: Russia) where the interest, quality and love for this sport has increased and&nbsp; that must be used to unite human beings and countries and not to not allow them to participate: which increases the division and conflict between countries or humans:&nbsp; This is important to highlight and value the position of the ATP for deciding that the ATP does not agree that athletes from certain countries (Russia and Belarus) cannot participate in international tournaments stating that this is against the principles of merit and non-discrimination:&nbsp; then, this is tremendously criticizable that the organization responsible of Football (FIFA UEFA) participates in armed conflicts or war with discriminatory decisions in Football, increasing the war by not allowing countries in conflict to participate in World Cup of Football:&nbsp; FIFA slogan of no to racism and some form of discrimination is a complete farce and used for convenience and interest (in the same style of all the other organizations (mainly ONU, OEA, FMI, BM, VATICAN) that control humans and that in 2000 years of the coming of the Envoy of God have not been able to solve iniquity and poverty), discrimination that has been evident in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine:&nbsp; Football is the main sport in the Earth and it is the one that can unite human beings the most and should be used as a source of union and not divisi&oacute;n; Through education:&nbsp; where this is used by many countries to induce and manipulate their inhabitants in a certain political direction through the dissemination of knowledge and even the textbooks of the students:&nbsp; many underdeveloped countries have increased illiteracy and degradation in education because this favors the politicians of the country&#39;s government: having an ignorant people who do not see what they do with the country&#39;s money and who cannot criticize them:&nbsp; the greatness of peoples depends on the education that gives the independence of individuals who are the ones that make the country advance; Through world organizations to control countries:&nbsp; ONU, OEA, Vatican, OTAN, UE:&nbsp; In addition, many countries have allowed the use of certain types of drugs for medical purposes (Uruguay, Bolivia) where drug use has gone unnoticed in these countries; Through religión: with a structure of religion that tries to control the population through a guideline and speeches that obey the Vatican and the actual governments of each country (which is evident when there are countries such as Nicaragua that do not follow a guideline of the church and the elite and then, the religion surprisingly actively intervenes in politics): the conclusion is reached and to which many humans have reached, that religion is a power most actually used (along with political and economic power); Through political power by means of the false argument used by politicians to reduce inequity and poverty: where a large amount of resources and money have been allocated to the political powers and rulers of many countries for centuries by the respective organizations responsable (FMI BM) without any results and in many countries poverty and inequity have increased. Besides, the bureaucracy is a structure of order and rules of management and administration used within the governments of each country that contribute to the inefficiency and manipulation of the required procedures in human life that ultimately affect the life of each human being when they require formalities that end up being complicated and time-consuming. Then, this power structure in politics, economics, and religion for the control of the population is ineffective and obeys the interests of the dark who control humans on the Earth, and is used ineffectively by the rulers (governing) of the countries who come to power precisely with the false discourse of reducing poverty and inequity; Through the pretext of climate change: severe climate change due to the emission of CO2 and the greenhouse effect is a complete fallacy. Abstract:
The objective of this study is to find out the disabilities students’ (deaf and dumb) understanding and acceptance towards counseling services. A case study qualitative approach was used using semi-structured interview. Studies carried out on eight deaf and dumb students at the special education school in the state of Kedah, Malaysia. The research sampels were given four counseling sessions by a registered trained counselor in using sign language during the counseling session. Video footage was used to analyse the process of counseling sessions and the semi-structured interviews. Results showed that the deaf and dumb student’s did not understand about counselling services when interviewed before the counseling was conducted. After going through four counseling sessions, all eight research sampels showed very positive acceptance towards the counseling services. Summary from the results shows that the deaf and dumb students positively accept counselling services when implemented using sign language.

Abstract:
Communication is the process through which one can interact with world. For a child with hearing loss, the biggest problem is learning to communicate. Because she/he cannot hear words clearly, it is much more difcult for her /him to learn to speak. So she/he has trouble both understanding what people want, and telling them what she/he wants. This can lead to loneliness, frequent disappointments and misunderstandings, both for the child and others. It is no surprise, then, that children with hearing loss sometimes are slow in learning to relate to other people, feel lonely or forgotten, or develops behaviour problems. Numerous studies shows that the development of deaf and hard of hearing students is faced with special challenges and there is increased prevalence of psychosocial problems in deaf and hard of hearing children. There is also incidence of declined cognitive function in deaf and dumb children to obstacles in learning and language development. Objectives: 1. To assess the cognitive problems of deaf and dumb children in selected deaf and dumb school at Kolhapur. 2. To assess the psychosocial behavioural problems of deaf and dumb children in selected deaf and dumb school at Kolhapur. 3. To nd correlation between cognitive problems and psychosocial behavioural problems among deaf and dumb children. 4.To nd the association between cognitive problems with selected socio demographic variables. 5. To nd association between psychosocial behavioural problems with selected socio demographic variables. Method: The research approach used for the study was Quantitative Descriptive Survey approach, A Quasi-experimental, Non Experimental Descriptive Research Design was used, which consisted a group of 87 samples who were selected by using Non Probability Purposive Sampling Technique. Data was collected by using Socio Demographic Variables, Cognitive Function Test Based on Raven's Matrices and Modied Conner's Teachers Rating Scale. Results revealed that majority of deaf and dumb chil Result: dren having cognitive as well as psychosocial behavioural problems and there is strong positive correlation between cognitive and psychosocial behavioural problems. There is association found between cognitive problems and selected socio demographic variables such as age, type of family and mode of communication. Also there is association found between psychosocial behavioural problems with selected socio demographic variables. The study Interpretation And Conclusion: revealed that majority of deaf and dumb children were having poor cognitive function i.e. having more cognitive problems, as well as most of the deaf and dumb children having high psychosocial behavioral problems.

Everybody is very much aware of the essentiality of the English language in the lives of 21st-century students for their further studies and successful careers. However, it’s found that society does not pay much attention to the language development of Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing (DHH) students and their future by neglecting them as dumb. The majority of people in the deaf community remain at the threshold, which indicates the least number of deaf in the mainstream. The inability to receptive language prevents them from acquiring natural language through communication. Several special schools exist in India for the deaf community, but their effectiveness in language teaching remains to be seen. Considering this fact, the researcher conducted a study to identify suitable English Language Teaching (ELT) approaches for DHH students, to test whether current methods are fruitful or are there any discrepancies, etc. The study was conducted at four special higher secondary level schools for DHH in South India. The data was collected quantitatively by conducting a survey. A writing assessment and a questionnaire were given. After analyzing the results, it was found that many Indian special schools are following oralism and the students are forced to follow lip-reading. Still, the teachers and the school authorities are not supporting Indian Sign Language (ISL), the first language of the Deaf. The study proposes a hybrid way of combining structural approaches with bilingualism and suggestopedia.

Communication is one of the basic requirements for living in the world. Deaf and dumb people convey through Sign Language but normal people have difficulty to understand their language. In order to provide a source of medium between normal and differently abled people, Sign Language Recognition System (SLR) is a solution . American Sign Language (ASL) has attracted many researchers’ attention but Indian Sign Language Recognition (ISLR) is significantly different from ASL due to different phonetic, grammar and hand movement. Designing a system for Indian Sign Language Recognition becomes a difficult task. ISLR system uses Indian Sign Language (ISL) dataset for recognition but suffers from problem of scaling, object orientation and lack of optimal feature set. In this paper to address these issues, Scale-Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) as a descriptor is used. It extracts the features that train the Feed Forward Back Propagation Neural Network (FFBPNN) and optimize it using Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) according to the fitness function. The dataset has been collected for alphabet from the video by extracting frames and for numbers it has been created manually from deaf and dumb students of NGO “Sarthak”. It has been shown through simulation results that there has been significant improvement in accurately identifying alphabets and numbers with an average accuracy of 99.43%

Background: Yoga is mind-body technique involving a set of physical exercises performed in synchronization with breathing, relaxation and meditation. ?Deaf and Dumb? is used to describe persons who are unable to hear the spoken words of others, and who, consequently, remain dumb. In this present study an attempt has been made to study the impact of selected yogic exercises on the visual perception, some health related fitness factors, alpha rhythm of cerebral cortex and attention bias in cerebellar hemisphere in the especially able female students. Methods: In this study we have taken 60 female subjects and they were divided into two group namely control and experimental with equal size i.e.30 subjects in each group. Various analyses were done according to the standard protocols. Results: The results of this present study showed that selected yogic exercises play an important role in development of some specific neuropsychological parameters in especially able female school children. Conclusion: It can be concluded from the study that improvement of specific neurological, neuropsychological functions and specific fitness components and their integration, remedial training, may focus upon one area where yogic exercises play an important role in specially able female school students.

Abstract:
The current research aims to reveal the level of mental health of the hearing impaired, and then compare the health levels of the two groups of hearing impaired (hearing impaired school-integrated and the hearing impaired not school-integrated). The research was based on the SCL-90-R (Symptoms Check List) by applying it to a sample of hearing-impaired children who were deliberately selected, as it consisted of 40 students from the deaf and dumb center in Ain Temouchent. They are divided into two groups (23 students who are included in ordinary schools) and (23 students who are not included). the results showed that there are differences in the level of mental health between the two groups of hearing impaired, which means that the group of hearing impaired people who are not included is characterized by a high level of mental health problems. Based on these results, a set of recommendations and suggestions were reached, such as the necessity of paying attention to the process of school integration through creating the school environment and proposing comprehensive survey studies on this category in society in general and the school in particular, as well as proposing treatment and other indicative programs to facilitate the school integration process.

Background Specially challenged children are more likely to be accompanied by dental oral eating problems spasticity and other muscular disorders and anxiety among caregivers.Aim To assess the health problems experienced by specially challenged school going children.Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in the schools meant for specially challenged children from urban area of Belagavi city in the month of August 2023. All the students from a randomly selected blind school n123 a deaf and dumb school n64 and a school for intellectually disabled n24 were included in the study. The basic information was collected from guardiansparents school records and by thorough clinical examination including few blood investigations. The Barthel Index was used to assess their dependency in Activities of Daily Living ADL.Results Out of total 211 specially challenged children included in the study majority 54.5 were females. About 64.4 of the subjects were aged 11 to 15 years. Based on age and gender specific body mass index BMI centiles 26.5 were found to be malnourished - overweight and obese 18.95 and undernourished 7.6. Almost one fourth of them 24.2 had dental caries and 16 7.6 showed pallor. Around 33 15.6 children reported similar disability in their families. One fifth of the children 20.4 were found to be dependent for activities of daily living as determined by Barthel index.Conclusion Specially challenged children are often excluded from health services though they are more prone to various health issues. The schools meant for such children need to effectively implement periodic health intervention programmes.

The Nigeria National Education Policy (6-3-3-4) is specific on physical education when it stated in paragraph 7 and 8 of section one of the National Policy on Education that physical education will be emphasized at all levels of the educational system. In an attempt to further confirm the attention given to sport in Nigeria, the federal government of Nigeria&rsquo;s Sports Development Policy documents (FRN, 1989) states that the Federal government accepts special responsibility for ensuring adequate level of funding for such programme as sports for the disabled. Very little efforts have been made in respect of proper funding for sports for the disabled in special schools in Nigeria. This paper discussed the impact of funding in the organization of sports for the disabled persons in special schools in Nigeria. The hypothesis stated in this paper was that funding has no significant impact in the organization of sport for the disabled persons in special schools in Nigeria. The population of this study consists of 5030 disabled students, 38 sports coordinators and 35 coaches of Special Schools in Nigeria. Proportionate sampling technique was used in selecting the number of respondents while simple random sampling technique was used to select the respondents from each of the special schools using the dip and pick method. A sample size of four hundred and eight (408) respondents made up of disabled persons in special schools, sports coordinators and coaches were used. A designed questionnaire for the deaf and dumb, the crippled were administered while the blind were equally administered with questionnaire which was interpreted into braille. The result in table 1 indicated the calculated chi-square value of 441.18 to be higher than the critical chi-square value of 34.17 at df 20 at 0.05 alpha level of significance. This shows that funding has significant impact in the organization of sports for the disabled persons in special schools in Nigeria. Therefore, the null hypothesis which states that funding has no significant impact in the organization of sports for the disabled persons in special schools in Nigeria is hereby rejected.

Introduction Films with deaf characters often do not focus on the condition of deafness at all. Rather, the characters seem to satisfy a role in the story that either furthers the plot or the audience’s understanding of other hearing characters. The deaf characters can be symbolic, for example as a metaphor for isolation representative of ‘those without a voice’ in a society. The deaf characters’ misunderstanding of auditory cues can lead to comic circumstances, and their knowledge can save them in the case of perilous ones. Sign language, because of its unique linguistic properties and its lack of comprehension by hearing people, can save the day in a story line. Deaf characters are shown in different eras and in different countries, providing a fictional window into their possible experiences. Films shape and reflect cultural attitudes and can serve as a potent force in influencing the attitudes and assumptions of those members of the hearing world who have had few, if any, encounters with deaf people. This article explores categories of literary function as identified by the author, providing examples and suggestions of other films for readers to explore. Searching for Deaf Characters in Film I am a sign language interpreter. Several years ago, I started noticing how deaf characters are used in films. I made a concerted effort to find as many as I could. I referred to John Shuchman’s exhaustive book about deaf actors and subject matter, Hollywood Speaks; I scouted video rental guides (key words were ‘deaf’ or ‘disabled’); and I also plugged in the key words ‘deaf in film’ on Google’s search engine. I decided to ignore the issue of whether or not the actors were actually deaf—a political hot potato in the Deaf community which has been discussed extensively. Similarly, the linguistic or cultural accuracy of the type of sign language used or super-human lip-reading talent did not concern me. What was I looking for? I noticed that few story lines involving deaf characters provide any discussion or plot information related to that character’s deafness. I was puzzled. Why is there signing in the elevator in Jerry Maguire? Why does the guy in Grand Canyon have a deaf daughter? Why would the psychosomatic response to a trauma—as in Psych Out—be deafness rather than blindness? I concluded that not being able to hear carried some special meaning or fulfilled a particular need intrinsic to the plot of the story. I also observed that the functions of deaf characters seem to fall into several categories. Some deaf characters fit into more than one category, serving two or more symbolic purposes at the same time. By viewing and analysing the representations of deafness and deaf characters in forty-six films, I have come up with the following classifications: Deafness as a plot device Deaf characters as protagonist informants Deaf characters as a parallel to the protagonist Sign language as ‘hero’ Stories about deaf/hearing relationships A-normal-guy-or-gal-who-just-happens-to-be-deaf Deafness as a psychosomatic response to trauma Deafness as metaphor Deafness as a symbolic commentary on society Let your fingers do the ‘talking’ Deafness as Plot Device Every element of a film is a device, but when the plot hinges on one character being deaf, the story succeeds because of that particular character having that particular condition. The limitations or advantages of a deaf person functioning within the hearing world establish the tension, the comedy, or the events which create the story. In Hear No Evil (1993), Jillian learns from her hearing boyfriend which mechanical devices cause ear-splitting noises (he has insomnia and every morning she accidentally wakes him in very loud ways, eg., she burns the toast, thus setting off the smoke detector; she drops a metal spoon down the garbage disposal unit). When she is pursued by a murderer she uses a fire alarm, an alarm/sprinkler system, and a stereo turned on full blast to mask the sounds of her movements as she attempts to hide. Jillian and her boyfriend survive, she learns about sound, her boyfriend learns about deafness, and she teaches him the sign for orgasm. Life is good! The potential comic aspects of deafness may seem in this day and age to be shockingly politically incorrect. While the slapstick aspect is often innocent and means no overt harm or insult to the Deaf as a population, deafness functions as the visual banana peel over which the characters figuratively stumble in the plot. The film, See No Evil, Hear No Evil (1989), pairing Gene Wilder with Richard Pryor as deaf and blind respectively, is a constant sight gag of lip-reading miscues and lack-of-sight gags. Wilder can speak, and is able to speech read almost perfectly, almost all of the time (a stereotype often perpetuated in films). It is mind-boggling to imagine the detail of the choreography required for the two actors to convince the audience of their authenticity. Other films in this category include: Suspect It’s a Wonderful Life Murder by Death Huck Finn One Flew over the Cuckoo’s NestThe Shop on Main StreetRead My Lips The Quiet Deaf Characters as Protagonist Informants Often a deaf character’s primary function to the story is to give the audience more information about, or form more of an affinity with, the hearing protagonist. The deaf character may be fascinating in his or her own right, but generally the deafness is a marginal point of interest. Audience attitudes about the hearing characters are affected because of their previous or present involvement with deaf individuals. This representation of deafness seems to provide a window into audience understanding and appreciation of the protagonist. More inferences can be made about the hearing person and provides one possible explanation for what ensues. It is a subtle, almost subliminal trick. There are several effective examples of this approach. In Gas, Food, Lodging (1992), Shade discovers that tough-guy Javier’s mother is deaf. He introduces Shade to his mother by simple signs and finger-spelling. They all proceed to visit and dance together (mom feels the vibrations on the floor). The audience is drawn to feel ‘Wow! Javier is a sensitive kid who has grown up with a beautiful, exotic, deaf mother!’ The 1977 film, Looking for Mr. Goodbar presents film-goers with Theresa, a confused young woman living a double life. By day, she is a teacher of deaf children. Her professor in the Teacher of the Deaf program even likens their vocation to ‘touching God’. But by night she cruises bars and engages in promiscuous sexual activity. The film shows how her fledgling use of signs begins to express her innermost desires, as well as her ability to communicate and reach out to her students. Other films in this category include: Miracle on 34th Street (1994 version)Nashville (1975, dir. Robert Altman)The Family StoneGrand CanyonThere Will Be Blood Deaf Characters as a Parallel to the Protagonist I Don’t Want to Talk about It (1993) from Argentina, uses a deaf character to establish an implied parallel story line to the main hearing character. Charlotte, a dwarf, is friends with Reanalde, who is deaf. The audience sees them in the first moments of the film when they are little girls together. Reanalde’s mother attempts to commiserate with Charlotte’s mother, establishing a simultaneous but unseen story line somewhere else in town over the course of the story. The setting is Argentina during the 1930s, and the viewer can assume that disability awareness is fairly minimal at the time. Without having seen Charlotte’s deaf counterpart, the audience still knows that her story has contained similar struggles for ‘normalcy’ and acceptance. Near the conclusion of the film, there is one more glimpse of Reanalde, when she catches the bridal bouquet at Charlotte’s wedding. While having been privy to Charlotte’s experiences all along, we can only conjecture as to what Reanalde’s life has been. Sign Language as ‘Hero’ The power of language, and one’s calculated use of language as a means of escape from a potentially deadly situation, is shown in The River Wild (1996). The reason that any of the hearing characters knows sign language is that Gail, the protagonist, has a deaf father. Victor appears primarily to allow the audience to see his daughter and grandson sign with him. The mother, father, and son are able to communicate surreptitiously and get themselves out of a dangerous predicament. Signing takes an iconic form when the signs BOAT, LEFT, I-LOVE-YOU are drawn on a log suspended over the river as a message to Gail so that she knows where to steer the boat, and that her husband is still alive. The unique nature of sign language saves the day– silently and subtly produced, right under the bad guys’ noses! Stories about Deaf/Hearing Relationships Because of increased awareness and acceptance of deafness, it may be tempting to assume that growing up deaf or having any kind of relationship with a deaf individual may not pose too much of a challenge. Captioning and subtitling are ubiquitous in the USA now, as is the inclusion of interpreters on stages at public events. Since the inception of USA Public Law 94-142 and section 504 in 1974, more deaf children are ‘mainstreamed’ into public schools than ever before. The Americans with Disabilities Act was passed in 1993, opening the doors in the US for more access, more job opportunities, more inclusion. These are the external manifestations of acceptance that most viewers with no personal exposure to deafness may see in the public domain. The nuts and bolts of growing up deaf, navigating through opposing philosophical theories regarding deaf education, and dealing with parents, siblings, and peers who can’t communicate, all serve to form foundational experiences which an audience rarely witnesses. Children of a Lesser God (1986), uses the character of James Leeds to provide simultaneous voiced translations of the deaf student Sarah’s comments. The audience is ushered into the world of disparate philosophies of deaf education, a controversy of which general audiences may not have been previously unaware. At the core of James and Sarah’s struggle is his inability to accept that she is complete as she is, as a signing not speaking deaf person. Whether a full reconciliation is possible remains to be seen. The esteemed teacher of the deaf must allow himself to be taught by the deaf. Other films in this category include: Johnny Belinda (1949, 1982)Mr. Holland’s OpusBeyond SilenceThe Good ShepherdCompensation A Normal Guy-or-Gal-Who-Just-Happens-to-Be-Deaf The greatest measure of equality is to be accepted on one's own merits, with no special attention to differences or deviations from whatever is deemed ‘the norm.’ In this category, the audience sees the seemingly incidental inclusion of a deaf or hearing-impaired person in the casting. A sleeper movie titled Crazy Moon (1986) is an effective example. Brooks is a shy, eccentric young hearing man who needs who needs to change his life. Vanessa is deaf and works as a clerk in a shop while takes speech lessons. She possesses a joie de vivre that Brooks admires and wishes to emulate. When comparing the way they interact with the world, it is apparent that Brooks is the one who is handicapped. Other films in this category include: Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (South Korea, 1992)Liar, LiarRequiem for a DreamKung Fu HustleBangkok DangerousThe Family StoneDeafness as a Psychosomatic Response to Trauma Literature about psychosomatic illnesses enumerates many disconcerting and disruptive physiological responses. However, rarely is there a PTSD response as profound as complete blockage of one of the five senses, ie; becoming deaf as a result of a traumatic incident. But it makes great copy, and provides a convenient explanation as to why an actor needn't learn sign language! The rock group The Who recorded Tommy in 1968, inaugurating an exciting and groundbreaking new musical genre – the rock opera. The film adaptation, directed by Ken Russell, was released in 1975. In an ironic twist for a rock extravaganza, the hero of the story is a ‘deaf, dumb, and blind kid.’ Tommy Johnson becomes deaf when he witnesses the murder of his father at the hands of his step-father and complicit mother. From that moment on, he is deaf and blind. When he grows up, he establishes a cult religion of inner vision and self-discovery. Another film in this category is Psych Out. Deafness as a Metaphor Hearing loss does not necessarily mean complete deafness and/or lack of vocalization. Yet, the general public tends to assume that there is utter silence, complete muteness, and the inability to verbalize anything at all. These assumptions provide a rich breeding ground for a deaf character to personify isolation, disenfranchisement, and/or avoidance of the harsher side of life. The deafness of a character can also serve as a hearing character’s nemesis. Mr. Holland’s Opus (1995) chronicles much of the adult life of a beleaguered man named Glenn Holland whose fondest dream is to compose a grand piece of orchestral music. To make ends meet he must teach band and orchestra to apparently disinterested and often untalented students in a public school. His golden son (named Cole, in honor of the jazz great John Coltrane) is discovered to be deaf. Glenn’s music can’t be born, and now his son is born without music. He will never be able to share his passion with his child. He learns just a little bit of sign, is dismissive of the boy’s dreams, and drifts further away from his family to settle into a puddle of bitterness, regrets, and unfulfilled desires. John Lennon’s death provides the catalyst for Cole’s confrontation with Glenn, forcing the father to understand that the gulf between them is an artificial one, perpetuated by the unwillingness to try. Any other disability could not have had the same effect in this story. Other films in this category include: Ramblin’ RoseBabelThe Heart Is a Lonely HunterA Code Unkown Deafness as a Symbolic Commentary on Society Sometimes films show deafness in a different country, during another era, and audiences receive a fictionalized representation of what life might have been like before these more enlightened times. The inability to hear and/or speak can also represent the more generalized powerlessness that a culture or a society’s disenfranchised experience. The Chinese masterpiece To Live (1994) provides historical and political reasons for Fenxi’s deafness—her father was a political prisoner whose prolonged absence brought hardship and untended illness. Later, the chaotic political situation which resulted in a lack of qualified doctors led to her death. In between these scenes the audience sees how her parents arrange a marriage with another ‘handicapped’ comrade of the town. Those citizens deemed to be crippled or outcast have different overt rights and treatment. The 1996 film Illtown presents the character of a very young teenage boy to represent the powerlessness of youth in America. David has absolutely no say in where he can live, with whom he can live, and the decisions made all around him. When he is apprehended after a stolen car chase, his frustration at his and all of his generation’s predicament in the face of a crumbling world is pounded out on the steering wheel as the police cars circle him. He is caged, and without the ability to communicate. Were he to have a voice, the overall sense of the film and his situation is that he would be misunderstood anyway. Other films in this category include: Stille Liebe (Germany)RidiculeIn the Company of Men Let Your Fingers Do the ‘Talking’ I use this heading to describe films where sign language is used by a deaf character to express something that a main hearing character can’t (or won’t) self-generate. It is a clever device which employs a silent language to create a communication symbiosis: Someone asks a hearing person who knows sign what that deaf person just said, and the hearing person must voice what he or she truly feels, and yet is unable to express voluntarily. The deaf person is capable of expressing the feeling, but must rely upon the hearing person to disseminate the message. And so, the words do emanate from the mouth of the person who means them, albeit self-consciously, unwillingly. Jerry Maguire (1996) provides a signed foreshadowing of character metamorphosis and development, which is then voiced for the hearing audience. Jerry and Dorothy have just met, resigned from their jobs in solidarity and rebellion, and then step into an elevator to begin a new phase of their lives. Their body language identifies them as separate, disconnected, and heavily emotionally fortified. An amorous deaf couple enters the elevator and Dorothy translates the deaf man’s signs as, ‘You complete me.’ The sentiment is strong and a glaring contrast to Jerry and Dorothy’s present dynamic. In the end, Jerry repeats this exact phrase to her, and means it with all his heart. We are all made aware of just how far they have traveled emotionally. They have become the couple in the elevator. Other films in this category include: Four Weddings and a FuneralKnowing Conclusion This has been a cursory glance at examining the narrative raison d’etre for the presence of a deaf character in story lines where no discussion of deafness is articulated. A film’s plot may necessitate hearing-impairment or deafness to successfully execute certain gimmickry, provide a sense of danger, or relational tension. The underlying themes and motifs may revolve around loneliness, alienation, or outwardly imposed solitude. The character may have a subconscious desire to literally shut out the world of sound. The properties of sign language itself can be exploited for subtle, undetectable conversations to assure the safety of hearing characters. Deaf people have lived during all times, in all places, and historical films can portray a slice of what their lives may have been like.
