Abstract:
The effects of religion, population sub-division and geography on the prevalence of deaf-mutism were investigated using information collected in the 1921 Census of Punjab. The total sample size was 9·36 million, and comprised data on thirteen Hindu castes, seventeen Muslim biraderis and two Sikh castes. A two-way analysis of variance comparing males in Hindu castes in which consanguineous marriage was prohibited, with males in Muslim biraderis which favoured first cousin marriage, indicated major differences with respect to the patterns of deaf-mutism within each religion. Hearing loss is the most common sensory deficit and one of the most common congenital abnormalities. The estimated prevalence of moderate and severe hearing loss in a normal newborn is 0.1–0.3%, while the prevalence is 2–4% in newborns admitted to the newborn intensive care unit. Therefore, early detection and prompt treatment are of utmost importance in preventing the unwanted sequel of hearing loss on normal language development. The problem of congenital deafness is today addressed on the one hand with hearing screening at birth, on the other with the early (at around 3 months of age) appli

This chapter analyses how the protection of environmental defenders is conceived by UN and EU human rights mechanisms and what conflicts may arise in relation to conceptualizations in the European Green Deal. In particular, the chapter analyses whether the Taxonomy Regulation and the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive could contribute to un-muting powers and rights protection for environmental defenders in and by the EU.

Competition policy may in some instances hinder positive cooperation initiatives between competitors in the context of climate change. This “antitrust issue”, i.e. the Commission’s strict application of the “fair share to consumers” condition under Article 101 TFEU, arguably results in “muting” the environment or future generations as well as stakeholders of global value chains, who are not always the direct consumers of the products concerned. The Commission under the Green Deal revised its applicable guidelines, adding a new chapter on “sustainability agreements”, which marks a positive but

There is a communication lag between deaf-mutes and normal people. To overcomethat, we are providing information access and services to deaf-mute people in Indian Sign Language (ISL) and developing a flexible project that can be enlarged to capture the entire lexicon of Indian Sign Language via physical gestures like hand expressions and non-manual signs like facial expressions by developing and building a training model using machine learning algorithms. Sign language recognition uses image-based manual and non-manual gestures. Here we used figure recognition to identify manual and non-manual

This study aims to consider the significance of deciphering the Hebrew alphabet for the history of phonetic thought. Hermetic and Kabbalistic teachings endowed the Hebrew language with a divine meaning. Traditionally considered as given to Adam by God, this alphabet was called the Alphabet of Adam. The novelty and relevance of the current work are defined by the lack of a comprehensive description of the relationship between these traditional ideas and phonetics. The need for it is caused by the earlier observations about the possible influence of the 17th century concepts on the results of la

If we understand that every business requires money that would be further invested in the necessary equipment in order to develop it, the question arises: what should be done in case the entrepreneur lacks certain means to achieve the intended goal? One of the possible solutions is a loan, regardless of whether it is in the form of a bank loan or a loan from a "friend". The impression that loans have been present in civilized society since ancient times is justified - business transactions and the development of trade have existed "as long as the world and centuries", and thus a loan as a lega
