Abstract:
Living wills regulate medical decisions in emergency situations. Those who create a living will can have it registered voluntarily in the Central Register of Lasting Powers of Attorney. Little is known about the general prevalence of living wills. Methods: The German Ageing Survey is an ongoing, population-representative study. 4,185 people aged 50 and older were surveyed about living wills in 2020/2021.Results: 44.8 % of people aged 50 and older have a living will, women more often than men (50.1 % vs. 39.2 %), older people more often than middle-aged people. Educational differences do not exist. Conclusions: Living wills increase the autonomy in medical emergency situations because the patient's wishes are specified in written form. People of all age groups should inform themselves about the significance of living wills and should seek advice about the contents, for example from the general practitioner or one's own health insurance.

Abstract:
Previous research was not able to identify an effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on family care-givers' wellbeing due to cross-sectional data structures, care-giver-specific samples or non-probability sampling designs. In this article, by drawing on longitudinal data from a random and representative sample of the German population aged 40 and older,&nbsp;<strong>the German Ageing Survey (DEAS) 2017 and 2020/21</strong>, we overcome methodological limitations of previous research. We examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the wellbeing (life satisfaction, depressive symptoms, loneliness) of different groups of family care-givers (new care-givers, continuous care-givers, past care-givers) and non-care-givers in Germany. We derived a balanced sample of n = 3,875 individuals aged 43&ndash;97 (mean = 66.5 years, standard deviation = 10.2 years) from the German Ageing Survey (DEAS) to explore changes in wellbeing between 2017 (pre-pandemic) and June/July 2020 (pandemic). Using a first-difference approach, we found that the pandemic has a negative impact on both non-care-givers' and family care-givers' wellbeing, with increased levels of depressive symptoms and loneliness compared to pre-pandemic times. Changes in depressive symptoms of family care-givers did not significantly deviate from non-care-givers. However, continuous care-givers showed more pronounced increases in loneliness compared to non-care-givers. Our results suggest that family care-givers' wellbeing merits particular attention when considering the long-term consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic on individuals' wellbeing. &nbsp;

Abstract:
This study investigates whether the association between supplementary grandchild care and grandparents&rsquo; subjective well-being&mdash;measured as life satisfaction, perceived stress, and loneliness&mdash;is moderated by the contextual environment. We use the Covid-19 pandemic as an example for contextual differences. Drawing on role theory, we argue that the costs and benefits of grandparenting may have differed between pandemic and pre-pandemic times. On the one hand, providing grandchild care during the pandemic may have been particularly stressful, prompting more negative effects on well-being. On the other hand, grandchild care may have been particularly relevant for enhancing well-being, as it protected grandparents from social isolation. Moreover, the association between grandparenting and well-being may have differed by gender.Using unbalanced panel data from the German Ageing Survey (DEAS) 2014 (n = 3,619), 2017 (n = 2,458), and 2020 (n = 2,021), we applied maximum likelihood structural equation modeling (ML-SEM)&mdash;a method that combines dynamic panel modeling with fixed-effects analysis&mdash;to examine whether there were differences in the relationship between grandchild care and grandparents&rsquo; well-being when comparing pandemic and pre-pandemic times and by grandparents&rsquo; gender.Grandchild care was associated with lower loneliness for both grandmothers and grandfathers. For grandfathers, this association was even stronger during the pandemic. Grandmothers experienced higher life satisfaction when taking care of grandchildren during the pandemic, but there was no evidence that grandchild care increased perceived stress for either grandmothers or grandfathers. In line with role enhancement theory, this study highlights that supplementary grand child care can be beneficial for grandparents&rsquo; well-being. Moreover, the context in which grandchild care takes place shapes the costs and rewards associated with it. Our results suggest that supportive policies and programs facilitating grandchild care can enhance grandparents' well-being, especially in challenging contexts.

Loneliness refers to the subjective perception of a mismatch between a person's social needs and their actual personal relationships. In this paper, the prevalence of loneliness in the older population was examined based on current data. Methods: The German Ageing Survey is an ongoing, population-representative study. A total of 4,261 people 50 years of age and older were surveyed in 2020/2021 with regard to their experience of loneliness. Results: Overall, 8.3 % of the population 50 years of age and older feel lonely. The findings showed no differences between different age groups over 50 years of age, nor are there gender or educational differences. Conclusions: There was no evidence that older individuals living in private households experience loneliness more commonly than middle-aged individuals. Data from nursing home residents indicate that there may be a higher risk of loneliness.

This article covers key developments in EU merger control in 2021 and 2022. These include the publication of the EC’s Guidance on the Article 22 EUMR referral mechanism and the developments in the Illumina/GRAIL case. There were also important CJEU judgments, including on competitive assessment of transactions by the EC as well as breaches of the standstill obligations by the merger parties. In 2021 and 2022, the EC adopted six Phase II conditional merger clearances, most of which were based on structural, rather than behavioural, remedies. The EC also prohibited two transactions, and a number of deals were abandoned in particular because of issues identified by the EC. Other main developments include the EC’s decision on Hungary’s violation of Article 21 EUMR as well the publication of the draft revised Market Definition Notice.

Gualco, Elena. Thesis, Paris 10, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015PA100087.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the development of the issue of age discrimination in the EU context and in the Court of Justice leading cases. On the one side, the paper underlines the weaknesses of this specific ground of discrimination due to three main elements: i) the variability and universal impact of the “age factor”; ii) the existence of some provisions (such as art. 6, Council Directive 2000/78/EC) which seem to be unable in ensuring a complete protection in this field; iii) the role of age as an intrinsic criteria of labour market legislation, meaning that, in some circumstances, differences in treatment may be justified under legitimate aims. On the other side, the analysis of recent ECJ case law addresses other reflections concerning, first of all, the horizontal direct effect given to non-discrimination on ground of age as a general principle of EU law; then, the role and the importance of the European Charter of Fundamental Rights and its provisions on age discrimination; furthermore, the necessity to balance the protection of this fundamental right with Member States discretion concerning employment policies

Abstract:
The paper deals with the concept of territoriality of intellectual property rights in its three meanings: international, substantive and conflict of laws. The principle of territoriality is contrasted by the author with the principle of universality, which is manifested in some approaches to cross-border copyright issues. The author then discusses the connecting factor lex loci protectionis (Sec. 80 Czech Act on International Private Law), which represents the projection of the territoriality principle into conflict of laws. The author discusses different approaches to the scope of application of the lex loci protectionis, in particular the question of the initial ownership and the transferability of rights. In the concluding part, the author defends the traditional concept of lex loci protectionis and provides contra-arguments to the solutions of the so-called universalists who propose that the question of the primary owner and transferability of rights should be governed by the law of the state of the origin of the work (lex originis).

Abstract:
Abstract“That they all may be one” (Jn 17:21) … Does, after more than 2000 years of church history full of conflict and contestation, this famous prayer of Jesus not rather seem like a pipe dream that further broadens the gap between aspirations and reality? Is ecumenism just a utopian attempt to ‘uncrack’ the egg that has got broken more and more by each new church division? Or is there more to dissent, to conflict and contestation from a theological angle than just the alarmed hushing up of dissenting voices by streamlined, objection-shunning ecclesial authorities? Given the controversy stories of Jesus in the gospels, is contestation indeed an ‘extraordinary’ phenomenon not befitting a church that professes to be ‘one, holy, catholic, and apostolic’? Is it possible to make conflict and disagreement the point of departure for creative theological reflection and sturdy ecumenical progress? What are the fruits that might be harvested from acknowledging and creatively engaging with the Christian legacy of conflict? This presentation takes as its point of departure the Protestant Reformation in the sixteenth century, when conflict was blazing up on different levels in theology, church, and state governance as well as society at large, at times resulting in physical aggression and religiously instigated violence and warfare. It cannot be denied that at the time conflict was playing a prominent role in the theological realm. Which are the theological lessons to be learnt today from this time of fierce conflict? As a result, the period of confessionalisation followed which led to clearly distinct ecclesial identities developing into the Lutheran Church, the Reformed Church, and the Roman Catholic Church. Each of them had become a new delimited community. Although there were attempts at reconciliation at the time, the differences and contradictions prevailed and ecclesial unity in the West was lost.If we understand ecumenism as an attempt of the different churches involved to overcome the contradiction of their opposed communal identities, this helps with assessing the role of conflict and dissent among those churches. On the one hand, this interpretation explains why only the modern ecumenical movement as a broad attempt at ‘concerted action’ yielded some success, although it never achieved the goal of “visible unity”—as the Constitution of the World Council of Churches (WCC) actually formulates the primary purpose of the WCC as an ecumenical institution. On the other hand, this interpretation clarifies why the modern ecumenical movement can function as a laboratory for devising innovative hermeneutical instruments. These instruments are designed for coping with controversy and conflict as well as for enhancing unity. Particularly the ‘differentiated’ or ‘differentiating consensus’, a hermeneutical tool developed in the International Lutheran–Roman Catholic Dialogue (since 1967) and for the first time fully fleshed out in the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification (1999) merits closer analysis as an instrument to manage conflict and to harvest from dissent, but also as a tool to foster mutual understanding and enable encounter and cooperation between the two Christian World Communions involved. On the basis of the insights gained, the theological role of conflict and dissent becomes more clearly perceivable and it can be asked: how can conflicts become loci theologici, hallmarks of theological differentiation and discernment; how can they, by taking the shape of various forms of prophetic resistance, function as catalysts; and how can they have formative effects teaching to take seriously the differences of the other, but also to appreciate all the more the commonalities. If these points can be clarified sufficiently, conflict can enable true encounter, while an attitude is adopted that Pope Francis once labelled “the third way” to deal with conflict (EG 227).

Abstract:
Hoßfel u. a. 2024). (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Broadleaved forest distribution in Europe and in Latvia is relatively small. Small-leaved lime Tilia cordata Mill. stands are even rarer, so it is important to study and protect them, as well as to assess their biodiversity and future potential. The aim of research is to investigate and assess the vegetation in lime forest stands. In total, 12 plots have been established for long-term monitoring of lime stands. In the sample plots, the survey of growing trees, dead wood, the inventory of vegetation species and the determination of the projective cover were carried out. The natural regeneration of lime was also investigated. During the research it was found out that stock of growing trees does not differ significantly by research objects. It varies from 169 to 446 m3 ha-1. The amount of dead wood in the objects is 0.06 to 56.6 m3 ha-1. The objects mainly contain debris of the II and III degrees of decomposition. The number of vegetation species found in the research objects varies from 21 to 35 species. A total of 26 species characteristic of European broad-leaved forests can be found in the objects. The projective cover of the tree, shrub and herb layers does not differ significantly from measurements in 2018. Small-leaved lime stands are stable and have continuous regeneration of lime trees under forest canopy.

Abstract:
Today, humanity must deal with the consequences of ongoing climate change. The most observed manifestations of climate change include increasing temperatures, as well as increasing monthly and annual average temperatures. In the present work, the change in the number of days with temperatures between 30 and 35 degrees Celsius and above 35 degrees Celsius was compared. Meteorological data from 21 climatic stations on the territory of the Kosice and Presov self-governing regions (Slovakia) were provided by the Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute in Bratislava. The data covered the period 1961 - 2020. Based on these data, we determined the forecast of the development for the period 2031-2040 and 2051-2060. The results show that in the last 20 years there has been a huge increase in the number of tropical days in the warmest regions of Slovakia. In the Somotor area, this increase is at the level of about 200 days compared to the cold period of 1971 - 1980. In terms of super tropical days (above 35 degrees Celsius), the number of super tropical days increased approximately fourfold during 1961 - 2010. The largest increase is in the last decade 2011-2020. Some places now experience 50 or more super tropical days per year. Looking at the 2031 - 2040 and 2051 - 2060 projections, the numbers of tropical and super tropical days can be expected to increase in the future.

Abstract:
"In this article, we focus on the intended development of digital literacy of pupils in all schools, which is presented in the Strategy of the Education Policy in the Czech Republic until 2030+, issued by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports in the year 2020. The use of information technologies needs to be integrated into the methods and content of various subjects. From this point of view, we consider the training of future mathematics teachers. How to use digital technology in teaching mathematics? We deal with a questionnaire survey conducted among students of mathematics teaching at the Faculty of Education, Palacký University in Olomouc in 2021. The objectives of the research were to determine the current readiness of future mathematics teachers to use digital technologies, their awareness of the benefits of digital technology in mathematics in teaching, their view on appropriate use of digital technologies in teaching and their attitude to mastering the basics of programming and the subsequent use of this skill in teaching mathematics. We analyze and process the data obtained from the questionnaire using standard statistical methods. These findings are very beneficial for 21st century teacher educators. The ability to properly use digital technologies in teaching mathematics has an undeniable pedagogical benefit for the education of a new generation of students. The results of the survey show that students, who are mostly 19 to 21 years old, are acutely aware of the importance of digital technologies today."

Abstract:
Deep hashing methods have shown great retrieval accuracy and efficiency in large-scale image retrieval. How to optimize discrete hash bits is always the focus in deep hashing methods. A common strategy in these methods is to adopt an activation function, e.g. sigmoid() or tanh(), and minimize a quantization loss to approximate discrete values. However, this paradigm may make more and more hash bits stuck into the wrong saturated area of the activation functions and never escaped. We call this problem "Dead Bits Problem (DBP)". Besides, the existing quantization loss will aggravate DBP as well. In this paper, we propose a simple but effective gradient amplifier which acts before activation functions to alleviate DBP. Moreover, we devise an error-aware quantization loss to further alleviate DBP. It avoids the negative effect of quantization loss based on the similarity between two images. The proposed gradient amplifier and error-aware quantization loss are compatible with a variety of deep hashing methods. Experimental results on three datasets demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed gradient amplifier and the error-aware quantization loss.

Abstract:
The world’s elderly population has soared since the 21 st century. In the COVID-19 epidemic in 2020, more than 30% of deaths worldwide are among the elderly. One of the important reasons for the formation of these diseases is the lack of outdoor exercise, and one of the key influencing factors is the fitness of activity environment. Therefore, it is of theoretical significance and practical value to spatial and temporal environment characteristics of outdoor activities of th elderly. In this study, Dezhou of Shandong province, China, was selected as the research city, where the elderly population ratio was significant. In this study, a questionnaire was compiled, including basic information of the elderly, spatial characteristics of activities, and environmental cognition of community activities, with a total of 30 questions. Data acquisition is conducted both online and offline. In the trial research stage, a total of 100 questionnaires were collected. The statistical results show that: the elderly generally pay attention to outdoor activities and their activity are generally with regularity; activity willingness is restricted by underlying diseases; the activity environment is under weak support; the reconstruction of the activity environment involves distance, facilities, health and epidemic prevention and space innovation.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Karatuna, Işıl, Sandra Jönsson, and Tuija Muhonen. Nurses’ experiences of workplace bullying: A qualitative cross-cultural study. Malmö University, 2025. https://doi.org/10.24834/isbn.9789178776146.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Workplace bullying is a severe and widespread occupational problem that negatively affects individuals, organizations, and societies. Studies have shown that national culture influences the way bullying is understood and experienced across different countries. However, our understanding of the cross-cultural variations in workplace bullying is still lacking. This study aimed to compare nurses’ experiences of workplace bullying in two culturally distinct countries: Turkey and Sweden. Methods: Using a qualitative design, semi-structured interviews were conducted with nurses (21 Turkish, 16 Swedish) who identified themselves as targets and/or bystanders of workplace bullying. Data were collected during 2019/2020 and analyzed using the deductive content analysis method. Results: There were many similarities between the Turkish and Swedish nurses in their reports of the most common types, antecedents, effects of, and target responses to workplace bullying. Differences were observed between countries concerning the source of bullying and in bystander responses. Conclusion: The findings emphasize that workplace bullying is a serious problem in the nursing profession across cultures and attention should be paid to cultural factors in understanding the varying bullying-related experiences of nurses. Healthcare organizations should therefore consider developing tailor-made interventions that fit their local cultural contexts to deal with workplace bullying in a more effective way.
