Full textLiterature has long preferred Ovid's hermaphrodite to PLato's androgyne ; but this tendency seems to change at the end of the nineteenth century. Analysing such evidence, the present thesis tries to understand the meaning of the emergence of a symbol in literature, which comes to supersede another one. .

The disenchanted profile of the bachelor and the imaginary related to it, illuminated with decadence : misogyny, misanthropy, reclusion, aestheticism, dandyism, generate a modification in the dreads of this type of literature as well as a variation of its themes, its motives, its poetics. .

Full textThe fin de siècle souls feel nostalgic for a more artistic world, try through their art to give consistency to their rejection of a society which is as a yoke. The character a veritable herald of social and moral tear, institutes a new link to reality by improving a kind of mental erethism. It is therefore a matter of improving the state of decadence through a provocative discourse. Baudelaire wrote « Anywhere but out of this world » This credo will be repeated over and over in the works of this followers who intend to undo reality in order to remake it. Rachilde's and Jean Lorrain's works, real pleas against the norm, link together upon two main lines which will determine their thematic and scriptural choices : perversion and subversion. Using major novels of both authors, this thesis intends firstly to analyse the semiology of a out of nature universe which thwarts the plans of reality transcription by the liberation of the heroes' and heroines' phantasmagoria and neurosis. Secondly, this thesis will bring out Eros' perversions which can be the expression of the desire transformation as a wish to « remake love ». This rewriting of codes, sexual in particular, leads up a trouble about gender and moreover, about the ego. Finally, we will examine the fevers of identity which lead to the endless fluctuations of speech between sense and nonsense, which will be shown to be symptomatic of an iconoclastic position. When the aesthetics become ethical, decadence is never very far

Full textThe etching works of Felicien Rops (1833-1898), Belgian artist whose career mainly took place in France, find a lot of their expressional and inspirational ways from various aspects of the fin de siècle literary fact. In addition to the fringing position Rops chose in the art field of his time, conceiving strategies, in order to strengthen the scarceness and oddness of etching works known for their eroticism and satanicism, Rops's esthetical creation is mostly built throughout the company of the literary circle and texts. Through the books Rops illustrates, the texts he use as legends or mottos on the very proves, through the works and characters in literature as well as in theological and mythical field with which he feeds his works, the picture gains such a legibility that it becomes a genuine visual discourse. The picture thus is caught as a theoretical and fictional resource for critics and writers of the time while Rops investigates amid his correspondence a literary style that enables him to broadcast via a private medium a singular esthetic thought and to create a substitute of literary works

Full textThere is a novelistic hybridity of “the narrative of murder” conducive to the late of the 19th century. Rested on several forms of crime’s fictions (it refers to decadents and naturalists works, novels, short stories, serials), I should explain its narrative forms. Analysis is at the very heart of this matter: inquest, psychological profile of the murderer and historical references participate to these narratives. A new kind of murderer comes out; criminal uses new skills as he evolves in a modern world. This evolution is header by the need to reach a wide audience for murder’s writing arouses such keen interest. If the press tends to change the journalist into a detective, assigning him the mission to keep the reader informed about urban mysteries surrounding, novelists draw their inspiration from the narrative of criminal investigation and portraits of criminals reported by newspapers. Besides, the notion of mystery is related to the one of murder’s narrative in so far these nightmarish writings oscillate between fantasy and reality. The aim is thus to explain the murder as an excessive act which goes beyond the simple idea of a thematic. Thanks to his study of social deviances, the writer tries to voice popular fears. Many influences must be taken into account: due to the turn of the century, a wave of pessimism sweeps through Europe. The third republic’s hesitant beginnings, the “Affaires” and the anarchist attacks make an unforgettable impression. The aim of this thesis will be to define the narrative of murder through the exhibition of its different forms, and its place in media environment

Full textAt the crossroads between two centuries, Salome plays the part of a mandatory commonplace in art and literature. Nevertheless, next to the femme fatale and just as unavoidable, stands a fragile and benevolent form of feminity, molded in the cast of the fairytale princess and theGothic novel heroine, but inspired above all by the Virgin and Martyr of the edifying novel, be it antique or contemporary. As it might be discrete enough to become unreadable, this archetype's benevolence cannot be legitimated without a sacrifice. The religious meaning of the scapegoat remains just as obvious and as efficient in the novels' narrative structure, as well as in the detailsthrough which such characters are built. Marial, magdalenian and farylike characters must undergo the same destruction trial, through which their edifying meaning becomes a litteral building-up up meaning, by juxtaposing dissimilar and yet efficien aesthetic elements which turn the character into an allegory of artistic creation. By linking mid-19th century and the 1920es and by weaving a link between the most famous of Baudelaire's heirs and the ones whose name is just merging out of oblivion, the purpose of this study is to analyse how much these representations of benevolent femininity must be seen as a permanence, as a monument – or as a monumentum – where late-19th century will not only gaze a the death of a declining era, but concentrate all what will be used to theorize idealist artistic movements on the edge of the 20th century
Chen, Xiaolin. "Le vieillissement dans l'oeuvre de Marguerite Duras." Thesis, Bordeaux 3, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020BOR30034.
Full textAging, an inevitable process that no creature on the earth could escape, is synonymous with living and an ongoing process throughout our existence. Despite the abundant studies on Marguerite Duras, the researches on the theme of aging seem rare. Being one theme related to the passage of time, aging is however omnipresent in the artistic universe of Duras as well as in the life of the writer, who towards the last years of her life transformed herself into a key figure in her works. In this thesis I suggest that there are three main aspects in dissecting the presence of aging in the world of Duras: the aging of the characters in her work; the aging of the author; and the aging of her writing. Based mainly on psychic, psychoanalytic and sociological approaches, my analysis of the aging of the characters focuses on the various symptoms of senility that affect the human beings as well as the writing, which is also inscribed in a process towards evanescence and disappearance. This evolution of writing, which increasingly thins out, becomes consistent with the aging of the characters and that of their author, as the author’s public image constantly changes to respond to the effects incurred by time in the author’s life and her writing. All these three aspects show that aging in the world of Marguerite Duras is an evolution towards disappearance. It is through this movement, even this “fall” gravitating towards the decline, that her writing on aging realise her dynamism. Contrary to the stereotypes, Duras does not praise aging as an advantage to reach the wisdom or the salvation, nor considers it as a punishment: the attitude of Duras concerning aging is characterized by resignation and passivity, but in a positive sense, marked by the deep reconciliation and the acceptance of the vanity of existence, and above all the wear and tear of time. Duras converts the decadence presented in the process of aging into a true motive of her writing and her own life

Full textA war does not stop when the treaties are signed between the various belligerents. Its remembrance perdure in collective memory, partly by the means of litterature. The franco-german conflict of 1870-1871 is, for this reason, particularly significant : during and after the war, the novelists seize the subject. A multitude of works is produced from 1870 to the First World War. Many are the authors who reject the french defeats to only describe heroic episodes. Recurrent and stereotyped characters abound in these novels : courageous francs-tireurs, martyred girls, spies working for Prussians, etc. The representation of the German, which was positive before the war, considerably moves : a new hereditary enemy appears. Other novelists, like Maupassant and Zola, choose to adopt a critic point of view. Finally, a minority of authors interpret the war as a religious event : The conflict and the defeat emane from a divine will. As many representations which contributed to fix the memory of the war and to transmit to generations born after 1870
