Abstract:
Carbon capture and sequestration are considered to be a temporary fix to the climate change global crisis. Following the noble gas tracers injection field experiment at Salt Creek in the state of Wyoming, USA, these tracers may be used to characterise the reservoir as a potential geological sequestration site for carbon dioxide. This study aims to investigate various thermodynamics properties of the five noble gases (Xe, Kr, Ar, Ne, and He) in n-decane at reservoir conditions (340 K – 460 K and 10 MPa – 200 MPa). The study utilises the SKS force field to describe n-decane and both Gibbs Ensemble Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics simulations were used to investigate the solubility, diffusivity, and vapour-liquid equilibrium of the five binary mixtures. The size of the noble gases was found to be important in these nonpolar mixtures where typical interactions are weak and short-ranged. The enthalpies of solvation were calculated and found to be directly correlated to the size of the solute where the energy required for the formation of a cavity to accommodate the solute is compensated by the nature of the intermolecular interaction between solvent and solute. The mixture of Ar + n-decane is of interest particularly because the sigma value for Ar is very similar to that of the CH3 group, resulting in the overall non-mononicity of several thermodynamics properties. Additionally, maxima in enthalpies of solvation were observed in Xe and Kr in n-decane solution at 200 MPa. While these maxima were observed in two different species at similar conditions, they are accommodated by unusually high uncertainties - further investigation is required before definitive conclusions can be drawn. The results from the vapour-liquid equilibrium study of the five noble gas + n-decane binary mixtures were in good agreement with the Peng-Robinson equation of state predictions. What is more, the diffusion coefficient ratios amongst the five noble gases in n-decane were investigated in light of Stoke-Einstein’s relation and Enskog’s hard-sphere relation. Three different radii of solute-solvent interaction were investigated and the best fit was observed when R =radius of solute + radius of gyration of n-decane. Additionally, the diffusion coefficients were utilised in the reservoir simulation to investigate the role of diffusion within the reservoir.

Abstract:

NMR methods have been designed and employed in studying ofcomplex liquids and solids formed by surfactants. PGSE NMRexperiments are easily biased by convection; this artifact canbe avoided by changing the sample holder and by usingconvection-compensated pulse sequences. The temperaturedistribution within samples was controlled using thetemperature dependent order parameter for CBr2H2dissolved in a thermotropic nematic solvent.Electronic ringing that often spoils accurate NMR experimentsfor broad lines was removed by the using composite pulses andquadrupole echo sequences with appropriate phase cycles.

Field-dependent81Br and35Cl NMR relaxation studies in micellar solutions ofC16TAX surfactants showed that the structure ordynamics of the hydration shell is more influenced by thesurfactant cation for bromide than for chloride, in agreementwith their position in the Hoffmeister series. The presence ofa small but significant frequency-dependent relaxation showedthat the lateral self diffusion of the anions may be reduced ascompared to its bulk value in diluted solutions but only with afactor of 1.0 - 2.5. The ions are clearly not "bound" to thesurface. A field-dependent2H NMR relaxation study on the CTABr-α-d2and benzene-d6showed an initial one-dimensional micellargrowth followed by the appearance of microemulsion droplets onaddition of benzene. The local mobility of the benzene wasreduced when solubilized in small amounts, consistent with aninitial average location of benzene at the micellar interface. The surfactant diffusion coefficients fromconvection-compensated PGSE NMR experiments in the C12E8-D2O system showed monotonous growth of the micellesupon increasing temperature. Emulsion droplets in the C12E5-decane-D2O system where shown to coarsen according to theOstwald ripening theory after being brought out of equilibriumby a temperature drop. X-ray scattering and2H NMR line-shape and relaxation experimentssuggested that complex solids formed by a partly-sulfatedpolysaccharide and CnTAB exhibit regular ordering at both microscopicand mesoscopic length scales.

Abstract:
Information on the density of hydrocarbons at high pressures and temperatures is of great importance in many fields, such as the study of ultra-deep reservoirs up to ~240 MPa and 250°C. However, density data at such high pressures and temperatures are often not available in the literature. In this study, experimental densities are reported for n-pentane, n-octane, 2,2,4-trimethylpentane, cyclooctane, n-decane, and toluene to ~280 MPa and ~250°C. These experimental densities are in good agreement with available literature data, although the literature data for many of these fluids do not extend to the pressures and temperatures utilized in this study.

Abstract:

Aromatic hydrocarbons are chemical compounds of great interest in the petrochemical industry. These are commonly derived from reformed naphtha, which are in multicomponent mixtures with aliphatic hydrocarbons. The separation of these components is realized, generally, the liquid-liquid extraction process. In this process, the sulfolane is the most widely used solvent. However, this has some disadvantages such as high cost. For this reason, many studies are developed by the academic community in order to propose alternative solvents to replace the exclusive use of sulfolane by compounds that are important features like good selectivity, easy recoverability and low costs. Given the above, this study main aims to determine liquid-liquid equilibrium data (LLE) to study the ability of solvents [diethylene glycol (DEG), triethylene glycol (TEG), glycerol and 2-hydroxyethyl amine format (2-HEAF)] in extracting aromatic mixtures with aliphatic. The physical properties also of great importance in the understanding of the behavior and interactions that occur in liquid mixtures. Thus, in this study were also studied the density and viscosity of solvent extractors aromatic. The experimental methodology for the determination of LLE data was initially validated by reproducing the literature, and the results showed good agreement between these data. After the method has been validated, solubility curves and tie-lines were constructed for systems containing decane + toluene + DEG (+ TEG, + glycerol, + 2-HEAF, + sulfolane) at T = (303.15 and 333.15) K. The composition data of tie-lines, obtained experimentally, were used to calculate the selectivity parameter and the distribution coefficient. With this data, it can be concluded that all the solvents studied have a good capacity for toluene extraction from mixtures with decane. However, the glycerol has presented as the most promising solvent for aromatics extraction. Finally, the experimental data were correlated through the thermodynamic activity coefficient models, NRTL and UNIQUAC. The results were considered satisfactory, noting that the NRTL was the model that presented minor deviations in compositions. Thus, best represented the LLE data for the systems studied.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis describes synthetic studies directed towards the total synthesis of the nakafuran and florlide marine natural products. Chapter One provides an overview of the importance of natural products to current medicinal chemistry and describes how the "supply issue" associated with these biologically derived compounds can be resolved through the process of total synthesis. Two families of marine natural products, the nakafurans and the florlides, are introduced as synthetic targets and strategies utilising a type II intramolecular Diels-Alder (IMDA) reaction to achieve their total synthesis are delineated. The efficient preparation of regio- and stereodefined vinyl coupling fragments via hydrostannylation and hydrohalogenation methodology is described in Chapter Two. The palladium-catalysed cross-coupling of these fragments, via Stille or Negishi coupling methodology, yielded dienes which were successfully advanced to IMDA triene precursors. Chapter Three describes investigation of the type II IMDA reaction to give bicyclo[4.3.1]decene carbocyclic skeletons. A facile acid-catalysed 6,7-alkene to 7,8-alkene olefinic isomerisation, via a proposed oxonium intermediate, and the inability to appropriately functionalise the desired adducts impeded progress along the synthetic route. Molecular modelling was conducted to investigate the causes of this unexpected reactivity. Investigations in Chapter Four describe the successful synthesis and cyclisation of homomethyl triene analogues prepared via application of enyne metathesis chemistry. The use of an exo-cyclopropylcarbinyl fragmentation was found to be unsuccessful as a means of installing the desired 6-methyl-bicyclo[4.3.1]decan-2-one core with a competing endo-ring expansion giving rise to a bicyclo[4.4.1]undecane ring system. Chapter 5 summarises the above results and gives a brief discussion of the future potential of this research to provide for a total synthesis of the nakafuran and florlide natural products.

Abstract:
To meet the current environmental challenges, breakthrough solutions compared to existing turbomachines are currently under development. They rely on the use of more efficient thermodynamic cycles. The objective of this thesis is to study experimentally the mechanisms of transition of combustion regime using a kerosene surrogate, n-decane.For this purpose, a deflagration is initiated in a closed chamber and compresses the fresh gases. The pressure and the temperature of the endgas increase until reaching the conditions favorable to the appearance of the autoignition in the chamber.3 successive combustion regimes are characterized in the combustion chamber by means of fast optical diagnostics. A first heat release, associated with the cool flame phenomenon, pre-oxidizes the fresh gases, it is followed by the Main Heat Release (MHR). For the highest initial temperatures, a detonation is observed at the end of the process. Two different transition paths are highlighted: the Deflagration-Autoignition Transition (DAIT) and the Deflagration-Autoignition-Detonation Transition (DAIDT).The sensitivity of regime transitions to the initial conditions of pressure, temperature and mixture composition was characterized by means of several parametric studies. For this purpose, the conditions of temperature, pressure and composition of the mixture are calculated at the onset of the different reactive fronts (cool flame, MHR and detonation). In particular, it has been observed that the successive heat releases of theauto-ignition start at the same temperatures (740 K for the cool flame and 1050 K for the MHR) whatever the initial conditions. The study, then, focused on the analysis of a particular operating point. During the study of this operating point different self-ignition front velocities were observed, highlighting the mechanism of SWACER during the transition.A regime transition criterion proposed by Zander et al. based on numerical studies has been tested in our experimental setup. A modified criterion has been developed to take into account compressibility effects in the reactive flow. The application of this criterion to all the dataset makes possible to predict the appearance of the detonation under the conditions where 0 and 100% of DAIDT are observed. The different regime transition domains have also been positioned on the Bradley diagram (ξ, ε). The modes of combustion predicted by the diagram are consistent with those reached in the chamber. The influence of the initial temperature distribution on the combustion modes achievable in the chamber has been studied. Three topologies of autoignition have been demonstrated for three initial temperature distributions in the chamber. These topologies are separated into two categories, those favoring a particular direction during sequential self-ignition and that exhibiting a three-dimensional behavior.Three-dimensional tests show a very high propensity for DAIDT but a slow spread of autoignition fronts. In this case, another mechanism of transition to detonation is evidenced: the self-ignition of an homogeneous gas pocket generates shock waves and triggers successive autoinflammations during their propagation. The shock coupling / reactive front causes the formation of the detonation. Different transition mechanisms to detonation have been observed and studied over a wide range of pressure, temperature, equivalence ratio and thermal gradient conditions. The obtained results will be useful to support the numerical studies carried out on the subject, which lacks experimental data in academic conditions

Abstract:
Soot particles (which are one kind of ultra-fine particles) can be produced and emitted in fuel rich combustion conditions. Sectors like road and air transportation, or industry are significant contributors to soot particles emissions. Soot particles are usually considered as a pollutant as their negative impact on health has been assessed. In some specific cases like nanomaterials production, they can be synthesized on purpose. In both cases, accurate understanding and prediction capability of the Particle Size Distribution (PSD) is needed, for a better combustors design. In this thesis, a novel numerical method is proposed to predict the Particle Size Distribution (PSD) evolution. It consists in a hybrid approach featuring stochastic particles representing a Probability Density Function (PDF), and fixed sections. The objective is to solve accurately for the surface growth/oxidation term, mitigating the problem of numerical diffusion encountered in some classical sectional methods. On the other hand, the proposed method is less expensive than a full Monte Carlo method. First, the context and motivation of the thesis are explained. Concepts and models for soot physical source terms are shortly reviewed. Then, the Population Balance Equation (PBE), which drives the evolution of the Particle Size Distribution (PSD), is presented as well as the different classes of numerical methods used for its resolution. Subsequently, the novel hybrid method is introduced. Its accuracy and efficiency are demonstrated on analytical test cases. Finally, the method is applied on a premixed ethylene sooting flame

Abstract:

Abstract:
Novelists have struggled to find forms of expression that would allow them to register the post-9/11 landscape. This thesis examines their tentative and sometimes faltering attempts to establish a critical distance from and create a convincing narrative and metaphorical lexicon for the historical, political and psychological realities of the terrorist attacks. I suggest that they have, at times, been distracted by the populist rhetoric of journalistic expression, by a retreat to American exceptional ism and by the demand for an immediate response. The Bush administration's statement that the state and politicians 'create our own reality' served to reinforce the difficulties that novelists faced in creating their own. Against the background of public commentary post-9/11 , and the politics of the subsequent 'War on Terror', the thesis considers the work of Richard Ford, Paul Auster, Kamila Shamsie, Nadeem Aslam, Don DeLillo, Mohsin Hamid and Amy Waldman. USing my own extended interviews with Ford, Waldman and Shamsie, the artist Eric Fischl, the journalist Kevin Marsh, and with the former Archbishop of Canterbury Dr. Rowan Williams (who is also a 9/11 survivor), I consider the aims and praxis of novelists working wilhin a variety of traditions, from Ford's realism and Auster's metafiction to the postcolonial perspectives of Hamid and Aslam, and, finally, the end-of-decade reflections of Waldman. My conclusion is that novelists are, finally, edging closer to methodologies adequate to the challenges of the post-9/11 world. Ford's admission that writers do not 'have an exact human vocabulary for the loss of a city' has given way to a new surety that the narrative and visual arts can define the unimaginable in important and expressive ways.

Abstract:
This thesis presents measurements of the branching fractions B(Ds -> lvl) and mea- surements of the pseudoscalar decay constant, fDs , using all the data acquired at the BaBar detector at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, which were collected from September 1999 to April 2007, and comprised 531 fb-1. The following mea- surements are made: B(Ds -> eve) = (6:11 +/-0:38 +/- 0:33) * 10-3, B(Ds -> tvt) = (5:06 +/- 0:34 +/- 0:50) * 10-2 , and a limit B(Ds -> eve) < 1:46 * 10-4 is obtained. Using these measurements a value of fDs = 252 +/- 6 +/- 7 +/- 1MeV is obtained, where the first uncertainties account for the statistical limitations of the data, the second uncertainties account for the systematic uncertainties, and the third uncertainties account for uncertainties associated with other physical constants (dominated by the lifetime of the Ds meson).

TANG, Shuk On Fiona. "Japan : regime change in the "lost decade"." Digital Commons @ Lingnan University, 2005. https://commons.ln.edu.hk/pol_etd/7.

Full text
Abstract:
The shift in both the political and economic situations of Japan in the post- 1993s caught the attention of observers because the abrupt changes were unparalleled in other Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries. Politically, a single conservative party had dominated Japan’s electoral and government spheres in a way unmatched in any other industrialized democracy two-to-one majorities over the next largest party; complete control of all cabinet posts; and a relatively large influence of government over the economy. Economically too, Japan’s rapid growth had also been without parallel and had put it at the head of the countries called the “Asian dragons”. The national growth rates of Japan were also double those of other OECD countries in the postwar period; labour productivity in manufacturing and industry was far greater; unemployment and inflation were dramatically lower; saving rates of people remained consistently higher; and overseas investments and holdings exploded more dramatically. All these successes had shocked the rest of the world. However, the loss of the dominance by the LDP and the end of the high growth of Japan's economy in the early 1990s contributed to what many Japanese have come to call the 'lost decade' and resulted in serious debates over the political and economic direction of Japan. This thesis uses a qualitative research methodology. A theoretical model of regime change will be used to analyze the political and economic shift of Japan.

Morrison, Kenneth E. "Wordsworth's Decline: Self-editing and Editing the Self." TopSCHOLAR®, 2010. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/220.

Full text
Abstract:
In critical discourse surrounding the poetry of William Wordsworth, it has become generally acceptable to describe the course of the poet’s career by means of a theory of “decline.” In its most common form, this theory argues that Wordsworth’s best poetry was written during one “Great Decade” (1798-1807)—an isolated epoch of prolificacy and genius. His subsequent works, it is argued, neither surpass nor equal his initial efforts; the course of his career after 1808 may be best described in terms of declivity, ebb, and decline. Due to its ideological complicity with the very texts it engages, and due to its construction as a “myth” of criticism, the theory of decline ultimately becomes a reductive premise that precludes understanding Wordsworth’s apparent downtrend as a complex but explicable process. This study therefore seeks to provide a critical explanation for the process of decline so often observed in Wordsworth’s poetry. In essence, I contend that the perceptible downtrend in Wordsworth’s verse is the direct consequence of continuous, career-long processes of revision or self-editing. This self-editing took two forms: First, the explicit form, whereby Wordsworth actually emended his poetry; and second, the implicit form, whereby Wordsworth sought, through his poetry, to amend his self-image by constructing an autobiography tailored to fit an idealized poetic identity. This analysis thus reveals and explicates Wordsworth’s possible motives for revision—the fluctuating demands made upon the poet by the poet himself. Because these demands represent the operative (if unstable) principle underlying specific textual changes, one may infer from their character the reasons why Wordsworth’s later poetry suffers in revision. By attending to the process whereby earlier verse was continually revised in order to fit a conceptual or poetic context for which it was not originally intended, I demonstrate how the actual substance of Wordsworth’s poetry was compromised or attenuated through a reductive (re)appropriation of its own materials. Unlike many critics, I do not treat Wordsworth’s revisions as the signifiers of some external change. Instead, my approach keys upon the conflict between Wordsworth’s efforts to realize a stable poetic identity and the representational and rhetorical limitations of poetic form, particularly with regards to autobiography. Drawing on the work of Susan Wolfson, Paul de Man, and Harold Bloom, I argue that Wordsworth’s revisionary practices are motivated by an agonistic process best described as “autobiographical anxiety” or the “‘anxiety of influence’ turned inward.” Ultimately, I conclude that Wordsworth’s decline was the consequence of an overarching ethic of composition which, because it privileged revision as a means of changing not only poetry but the poet himself, allowed self-consciousness to become a self-defeating agent.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the history and development of three Irish periodicals, published between 1904-1914, with emphasis placed upon the literary magazine as a distinct genre and the impact of this genre on the literary and cultural landscape of Ireland at a crucial time in its nascent development. My research considers the manner in which each magazine was established and run, with an emphasis on varying editorial personalities and their impact upon each periodical. Each chapter is dedicated to an individual magazine and is structured in chronological order, with the first focused upon Dana, the second dedicated to Uladh (both published from 1904-1905) and the final chapter focused upon The Irish Review (1911-1914). The aim is to provide an assessment of those journals, acknowledging how key figures of the period made use of their pages to promote their own views and the movements that they supported. This thesis will emphasise the significance of the literary magazine as a historical resource that reveals much about the period in which it was published. Until now the history of these literary periodicals has remained largely untold, as have the events surrounding the lives of their editors and contributors during their publication years. My primary purpose is to tell these stories in the detail they deserve.

Abstract:
One of the great superpowers in recent history experienced a tumultuous final decade, shining a light on several important policies of economic reform known as perestroika, championed by General Secretary of the USSR Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev. According to, for instance, Stuart and Gregory, the reforms aimed at renewing making the Soviet economy more efficient. In this essay, the impact of the reform on the economy is subject of analysis. The subject is approached the topic via literature research on the topic of 1980s USSR economic problems, combined with key aggregate data on economic conditions (i.e. grain yield production, GDP per capita pre- and post-perestroika, foreign trade, life expectant pre-and post-perestroika). The thesis concluded that perestroika was unable to salvage the USSR, in fact, conditions only worsened after its administration, following into the 1990s.

Abstract:
Many models of physics beyond the Standard Model include an extended Higgs sector, responsible for electroweak symmetry breaking, and predict the existence of additional Higgs bosons. The Type II Two-Higgs-Doublet Model (2HDM) is a particularly well motivated scenario and a suitable framework for phenomenological studies of extended Higgs sectors. Its low energy spectrum includes two CP-even Higgses h and H, one CP-odd Higgs A, and a pair of charged Higgses H±. We study the implication of the LHC Higgs search results on the Type II 2HDM and identify regions of parameter space which are consistent with all experimental and theoretical constraints and can accommodate the observed 125 GeV Higgs signal. This includes parameter space with a distinctive mass hierarchy which permit a sizable mass splitting between the undiscovered non-Standard Model Higgs states. If this mass splitting is large enough, exotic Higgs decay channels into either a Higgs plus a Standard Model gauge boson or two lighter Higgses open up. This can significantly weaken the reach of the conventional Higgs decay channels into Standard Model particles but also provide the additional opportunity to search for exotic Higgs decay channels. We provide benchmark planes to explore exotic Higgs decay scenarios and perform detailed collider analyses to study the exotic decay channels H/A -> AZ/HZ and H± -> AW/HW. We find that these exotic decays offer complementary discovery channels to the conventional modes for both neutral and charged Higgs searches and permit exclusion and discovery in large regions of parameter space.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the effects and impacts of the Employment Contracts Act 1991 on women in non-standard from 1991-1999 in New Zealand. It addresses the need for qualitative research that gives voice to the experiences of women in non-standard work. The research model developed in this thesis is informed by feminist methodology. It is argued that the traditional methods of recording employment statistics and of conducting survey interviews do not account for the personal experiences of the respondents. This study combines three techniques: analysis of published literature, analysis of employment statistics and in-depth qualitative interviews with six women in non-standard employment. Examination of the political context of the enactment of the Employment Contracts Act 1991 highlighted varied expectations of the legislation. Political parties, feminist researchers and interest groups differed in their assessment of the implications of the Act for women in non-standard work. The study compares these views with statistical data and the findings of interviews with women in non-standard work. It is argued that the Act has had a significant effect on women. The flexibility of employment created by the Act has enabled women with young children to work by lifting the constraints on time, as well as the responsibilities of child-care. However, flexible working hours imposed significant constraints on women's private time and the results of the interviews suggest that the affects of the Act are different for women who no longer require flexibility in work in order to work around child-care responsibilities. In conclusion, this discussion gives a new perspective to the study of the effects of the Employment Contracts Act 1991 by supplementing analysis of political debate and statistical records with opportunities for ordinary women workers to reflect on their experiences. This indicative study provides a basis for further research in this area.

Abdullahi, Leila Hussein. "Adolescent immunisation in Africa in the decade of vaccines." Doctoral thesis, Faculty of Health Sciences, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/30364.

Full text
Abstract:
Rationale: There are many public health benefits of targeting adolescent for immunisation. However, and in many settings, adolescents do not get optimal benefits from immunisation. In the decade of vaccines (2011-2020), adolescent immunisation is a topical subject. An up-to-date and synthesized research on adolescent immunisation is lacking. Overall purpose: The purpose of the PhD thesis was to characterize adolescent immunisation in the decade of vaccines. Research methods: First, we conducted a comprehensive narrative review of the literature (chapter 2) on adolescent immunisation. Then, we conducted systematic reviews (chapters 3 and 4). One of the systematic reviews assessed the strategies to improve uptake of vaccines among adolescents. The other systematic review assessed the knowledge, attitudes and practices of adolescents and their parents and teachers towards immunisation. Finally (chapter 5), we conducted a cross-sectional study to describe the challenges experienced, and lessons learnt during the introduction of national human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination programmes in Africa. Findings: Adolescents are an important group to target with primary, booster or catch up immunisation. Some global initiatives have advocated for adolescent immunisation. Multiple reasons, among them, lack of knowledge and access to immunisation services are barriers to adolescent immunisation. There exist multiple strategies to improve uptake of vaccines among adolescents. For example, health education, financial incentives, mandatory vaccination, and class-based school vaccine delivery. The evidence suggests that a combination of strategies may be more effective than one strategy alone in enhancing uptake of vaccines by adolescents. Knowledge of vaccines, immunisation and vaccine preventable diseases was found to be suboptimal among key stakeholders of adolescent immunisation in Africa. We found a disconnect between the level of knowledge on immunisation and the uptake of vaccines, an interesting finding that warrants further research in Africa. Six African countries shared the lessons learnt and experiences during the national introduction of HPV vaccination programmes that targeted adolescent girls. There were similarities in the results among the participating countries. The challenges included: logistical coordination, identification of the target population, obtaining political support, integration with other school programmes and stakeholder engagement. A lesson learnt was that schools are a convenient site to access and vaccinate adolescents. Conclusion: Adolescent immunisation is not routinely practiced in many countries. The introduction of HPV vaccines has created an ideal opportunity to build platforms for adolescent immunisation. Research on adolescent immunisation is limited, more so in low and middle-income countries. Existing research shows a combination of strategies can be used to enhance uptake of vaccines among adolescents. Strong advocacy programmes are required to drive the global agenda of adolescent immunisation, particularly in Africa.

Meredith, Ivan. "Opera in South Africa during the first democratic decade." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/26771.

Full text
Abstract:
The author set out to investigate operatic works that were written in South Africa between 1994 and 2004. Original works that included African elements were of interest as was their classification as operas, musical theatre or music drama. Their artistic merit and the process followed in writing successful works in this genre were investigated. Not only was the collaboration between composer and librettist scrutinised, but also the initial stage during which the conception for these theatrical works took shape. Due to the empirical nature of the research, data was collected mostly via interviews held with composers, librettists, directors and conductors of original works written and performed in the said period. The data is presented in six chapters, each one providing a full description of casting details, synopses and brief analyses of the works. In the Preface the premise upon which the research rests is discussed, while the Introduction serves to highlight various issues concerning modem opera and fusion works that have played an important role in providing the groundwork for contemporary ethnic opera in this country. Original works are discussed in each chapter, and a critical evaluation is presented in an Appendix. The author concludes that much effort was expended by pioneers in the fields of music, theatre and dance to create new works and organise performances. What emerged, furthermore, was that many of the works analysed could not be categorised as 'opera' but rather as 'musical theatre' or 'music drama'. It would also seem that uninitiated audiences first need to be made conscious of the aesthetic value of the genre before they may be able to appreciate it. Operatic production companies have always been at the forefront when it comes to decision - making regarding which and whose work shall be performed. Funding is crucial to the success of any production and plays an equally important role in eventually determining a positive outcome. This aspect has, therefore, also been included as part of the research project.

Hamilton, John E., and n/a. "The curriculum consultancy section, ACT Schools Authority : the first decade." University of Canberra. Education, 1985. http://erl.canberra.edu.au./public/adt-AUC20060714.154658.

Full text
Abstract:
The study presents a review of the establishment and operation of the Curriculum Consultancy Section of the ACT Schools Authority over the period of the first decade of its existence. It considers the move to establish a new and different education system; the important reports which gave impetus to that move; first the Currie Report (1967.), Report on an Independent Education Authority for the Australian Capital Territory and the three further reports which kept the spirit of the Currie Report alive, i.e. the Neal-Radford Report (1972.), the Campbell Report (1973.), and the Hughes Report (1973.). The study emphasises the haste with which the new system was finally established; that there was not time to develop a 'coherent, imaginative and suitable plan' (Currie, 1967, p.9.) and that staff resources were inadequate. As Beare (1978.) has noted, 'At no time in its first four years was the Schools Office given the manpower needed merely for maintenance functions let alone for development activities ... .' (p.80.) The curriculum issues that arose in planning this new system and the curriculum context within Australia are considered prior to a close examination of the development and operation of the section during the decade; the pressures which affected it and the changes which occurred This examination as the main body of the study falls easily into three periods; The First Years; The Middle Years of the First Decade; and the Final Years of the First Decade; each period coinciding with the period of tenure of one of the three principals the section has had in those ten years. Throughout this main body of the study the major recurring themes affecting the life of the section are closely followed, i.e. the conflict within the system, the diversity of demands and the difficulties of meeting those demands, the difficulty of defining role and function and the problems of leadership. In conclusion the study reflects on these recurring themes and examines the changes which have occurred over the decade, e.g. the changes in role and function, the shift in orientation to consultancy, the changes in selection and professional development of consultants, the concentration of consultants in priority areas and the developing cohesiveness of the consultancy section. Finally the study addresses the future; consideration is given to the stage in the life cycle of an organisation that the ACT Schools Authority is at currently and to the effect that this may possibly have upon the undoubtedly troubled future of the Curriculum Consultancy Section. The study draws on the documents available; on interviews with people who have worked in the area and also on the extensive body of literature which is available.

Abstract:
This thesis concerns the 2.0 decade, the decade when the social web started to develop. The main research objective is to contribute to our embedment in Internet technology in a conscious and livable way. The thesis is part of a general attempt to improve our understanding of the transformation taking place in the development of the web. We live in a time when knowledge contexts are moving from expert knowledge towards conversational knowledge. My research is mainly presented in the form of five essays. This thesis can be described as a conversational analysis of knowledge processes during the 2.0 decade. The 2.0 decade came to life in the wake of the information technology bubble in the end of the 1990s. The first decade of the 2000s was the decade when 'the Web' became 'Web 2.0' and the energy of the Internet switched from monetary speculations to conversations. Everyone wanted to start conversations and build digital technology, which induced conversations. Like the concept Web 2.0, this thesis came to life in the wake of the information technology bubble. It presupposes the knowledge relation between humans and our technology to be conversational rather than rational. This basically means that digital technology is not a tool but an integrated part in the person assemblage. There are many important thinkers embedded in this thesis. Some of them are more important than others, notably Gilles Deleuze and Donna Haraway. However, the thesis does not analyze the text of other thinkers, it involves them in the conversation. Important concepts as assemblage, rhizome (Deleuze) and cyborg (Haraway) are participants in the text rather than being its objectives. They are part of the general experience behind the essays, together with all the persons I have linked up to and the digital technology I have tried to become with. To become with (or develop together with) technology means to acknowledge the idea that technology is more than a tool. It is something within, not something external.

Roush, Edward W. (Edward Wesley). "The Emergence of Christian Television: the First Decade, 1949-1959." Thesis, University of North Texas, 1990. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc504286/.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to describe the relationship and to compare the programming of major Christian ministries during the first decade of Christian television. A historical perspective was the method used in identifying and explaining the events and activities that constituted Christian television from 1949 to 1959. The results of the research concluded that Christian television began at a time of social trauma, unrest, and confusion in America. Competition for a viewing audience was not a factor. Leading personalities presented themselves as independent thinkers who also saw themselves as "preachers" with a strong desire to succeed. Motivation was provided by a sense of "dominion" that emerged from the Great Awakenings within the churches of America that became a driving force in the first three decades of this century.
