Abstract:
New major, minor, and trace element data for the Chakhla- Delakari sill and three nearby lava flows in the proximal area of Tamia are presented. Based on abundances of trace elements, it is inferred that the sill was the feeder of the two uppermost lava flows which tapped magmas from a LREE-, Rb-enriched source. The oldest (lowermost) flow shows greater affinity with the western Deccan lavas. The association of the feeder sill with a large network of parallel trending sills and dikes, and the elongate Satpura Dome, is taken to infer that a major locus of eruption of the Deccan Trap lavas exist

The 500,000 km2 of Deccan basalts are situated in Maharastra, India. The basalt flows are predominantly tholeiitic and were penetrated by post-depositional fluids from which zeolites, and associated secondary minerals, crystallised. The frequency of occurrence and distribution of the zeolite species in an area 15,000 km2 has been determined and does not support the zonal scheme proposed by earlier workers. Crystallization experiments were performed at one-atmosphere pressure and Quartz- Fayalite-Magnetite (QFM) buffer conditions on tholeiitic basalts from Ambenali and Bushe formations of the Deccan Traps. The sequence and chemistry of the experimentally produced phase assernblages are in general agreement with the observed petrographic and geochemical variation of the natural Ambenali samples. Detailed volcanostratigraphic logs of seven traverses up the lava sequence in the Western Ghats, Deccan Traps, India, are presented. The main study area, the Mahabaleshwar Plateau, was chosen because the lavas were emplaced around the time of the Cretaceous-Tertiary Boundary and because there is access to exposed lavas on three of its four sides, permitting investigation of the volcanic architecture in 3-D. Besides characteristics of the lava units, the logs include integrated geochemical and palaeomagnetic samples. The lava pile is dominated by pthoehoe sheet lobes and smaller lobes and toes.

The medium format photographs created in conjunction with my senior thesis exhibit, Everyday Decay, use texture, line, intimate framing, warm color palettes, and layering to explore an aspect of the everyday landscape that we interact with often but generally ignore. The choice of medium and subject of decay creates a sense of the past, aided by the warm tones that imply affinity and nostalgia.

Abstract:
The long time energy decay of vortices for several different initial flow scenarios is investigated both theoretically and numerically. The theoretical analysis is based on the energy method. Numerical calculations are done by solving the compressible Navier-Stokes equations using a high order stable finite difference method. The simulations verify the theoretical conclusion that vortices decay at a slow rate compared to other types of flows. Several Reynolds numbers and grid sizes in both two and three dimensions are considered.

Interactions between copper and chlorine disinfectants were examined from the perspective of disinfectant decay and copper pitting corrosion. Sparingly soluble cupric hydroxide catalyzed the rapid decay of free chlorine, which in turn, led to production of less soluble and more crystalline phases of cupric hydroxide. The catalytic activity of the cupric hydroxide was retained over multiple cycles of chlorine dosing.
