Abstract:
Armchair observers have long argued that the time of year at which a motion picture is released affects the movie's potential for gaining an Academy Award nomination. The introduction of consumers' videocassette recorders (VCRs) in 1975 had the potential to erase this bias. The month of release for 11 years of pre- and 11 years of post-VCR Best Picture nominees and winners was analyzed. A disproportionate number of the films were released during the last three months of the year, especially in December. No significant difference was found for the month of release between films released during

AbstractThe following article is based on a presentation given as part of Symposium X—Frontiers of Materials Research on December 4, 2002, at the 2002 Materials Research Society Fall Meeting. The cinema is just over 100 years old. From the beginning of motion pictures in the mid-1890s, the materials used for films have been at the heart of cinema technology. The material first used was cellulose nitrate film—unrivaled in its mechanical, physical, and aesthetic qualities, and also dangerously flammable. In the 1950s, cellulose nitrate was replaced, for safety reasons, by cellulose triacetate. T

One of the challenges that teachers face when they teach data analysis to their students is getting them to see the “big picture.” Using multiple representations is one way to help students make sense out of a large amount of data. For example, the data can be recorded in a table, graphed in a rectangular-coordinate system, and analyzed for an equation of best fit. These techniques are standard practice in data analysis. However, furnishing an interesting context for teaching these methods is sometimes difficult. One way to motivate students to see the big picture of data analysis is to explor

Preservation of ankle motion may improve quality of life as evidenced by patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs). However, some studies have shown a lack of improvement of ankle range of motion after the postoperative recovery period, despite satisfactory motion being observed intra-operatively. To me photography is about capturing a moment, a single moment in time, a single image. Most of us these days are amateur photographers with our camera phones. A picture tells a thousand words they say. A bride on her wedding day, a child killed by a bombing, a beautiful mountain range, a riot, boats , hurricanes...anything you take a photo of is a moment in time, a split second… then it is history.

So what role do

Abstract:
This paper explores the construction of multicultural identities in the postcolonial world in relation to nonresident Indian women depicted in mainstream cinema. The dissertation traces the distorted representation of Indian women from its colonial and diasporic origins to its contemporary neo-colonial evolution. The analysis of two films, directed by Gurinder Chadha, Bend It Like Beckham (2002) and Bride and Prejudice (2004), speaks back to Indian women‟s agency and ownership of multicultural identities. These film texts were chosen as they are both contemporary examples of Indian class, gend

Abstract:
The second recess began with the plan to resume the hearings in October after watching a series of films discussed during the investigation. However, the mounting criticism would make it difficult to predict a victory for the isolationist senators. Because the films had not yet been screened, and with the growing divide within the subcommittee with Senator Tobey’s antics on the last day, the Los Angeles Times predicted the end of the investigation was near. The Senate subcommittee on Motion Picture Propaganda was finally disbanded on December 18, 1941. The subcommittee would never reconvene as Hollywood, along with the rest of the country, had become wholeheartedly dedicated to the war effort. The isolationists had no choice but to go along for the ride. Those involved with the Senate investigation would continue to do their jobs and live their lives. Unlike other events in political history, this one would not have many ripple effects after December 7, 1941. The United States senators would see a mixed bag of career success.

Abstract:
Curtiz wooed Bess Meredyth, who became both his lover and his collaborator. A biographical profile of Meredyth is provided. A charter member of the Motion Picture Academy, who began with D. W. Griffith and who had a résumé that included The Red Lily (1924) and Ben Hur (1925), she insinuated Curtiz into her circle of high-powered intimates that included Louella Parsons, Frances Marion, and Gene Fowler. She also helped Curtiz master reading and speaking English, with mixed success. His lifelong struggle with English was eventually turned to his advantage by a clever PR campaign of “Curtiz spoken here.” The couple marriedon December 7, 1929.Curtiz inherited a stepson, John Meredyth Lucas, whose memoir is an invaluable resource about his formative years with the director-as-stepfather.As Curtiz settled into a comfortable social and professional life in Hollywood, Warner Bros. revolutionized the film industry with sound when The Jazz Singer premiered.Curtiz was in the vanguard of the transition with Tenderloin (1928), which included several talking Vitaphone sequences. He finally was given the green light by the Warners to make his epic Noah’s Ark.
