However, there are several reasons why such plant model information would not be globally known. One reason could be that the designer wants the parameters of each local controller to only depend on local model

Many control systems of practical importance are multivariable. In such systems, each manipulated variable (input signal) may affect several controlled variables (output signals) causing interaction between the input/output loops. For this reason, control of multivariable systems is typically much more difficult compared to the single-input single-output case. It is therefore of great importance to quantify the degree of interaction so that proper input/output pairings that minimize the impact of the interaction can be formed. For this, dedicated interaction measures can be used. The first par

Abstract:
This thesis aims to develop control algorithms for irrigation canals in an experimental framework.
These water transport systems are difficult to manage and present low efficiencies in practice.
As a result, an important percentage of water is lost, maintenance costs increase and water users follow a rigid irrigation schedule.
All these problems can be reduced by automating the operation of irrigation canals.
In order to fulfil the objectives, a laboratory canal, called Canal PAC-UPC, was equipped and instrumented in parallel with the development of this thesis. Abstract:
Today society is facing numerous challenges associated with energy management system. The centralized power generation system is depending on the fossil fuels to generate energy which is harmful to the environment, and it is unable to fulfill the rising demand for electricity. The decentralized power generation system could easily be integrated with renewable energy sources which could satisfy the growing demand for electricity without damaging the environment. This thesis explores the proper energy distribution system (smart grid) which could be fully equipped with the digitalized technology

Aucamp, Christiaan Daniël. "Model predictive control of a magnetically suspended flywheel energy storage system / Christiaan Daniël Aucamp." Thesis, North-West University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/8601.

Abstract:
The goal of this dissertation is to evaluate the effectiveness of model predictive control (MPC) for a magnetically suspended flywheel energy storage uninterruptible power supply (FlyUPS). The reason this research topic was selected was to determine if an advanced control technique such as MPC could perform better than a classical control approach such as decentralised Proportional-plus-Differential (PD) control. Based on a literature study of the FlyUPS system and the MPC strategies available, two MPC strategies were used to design two possible MPC controllers were designed for the FlyUPS, na

Abstract:
In this thesis the telecommunication problem known as inter-cell interference is examined. Inter-cell interference originates from users in neighboring cells and affects the users in the own cell. The reason that inter-cell interference is interesting to study is that it affects the maximum data-rates achievable in the 3G network. By knowing the inter-cell interference, higher data-rates can be scheduled without risking cell-instability. An expression for the coupling between cells is derived using basic physical principles. Using the expression for the coupling factors a nonlinear model descr
