Full textThe treatment process of liquid waste containing heavy metals by metal hydroxyde precipitation is the most commonly employed. At the present time, the sludge are an ultimate waste wich are stored in landfilling. In a first time, the objective is the inertizing of heavy metal like zinc. The principle of transformation of leaching forms containing heavy metal in metallic sulfides slightly soluble appears like a way to explore. The present work confirms that a sulfurization of mineralogic form of zinc containing in sludge is faisable from polysulfides solutions. The performance of this process is confirmed in the case of real sample stemming from industry. In a second time, we studied the possibility of the selective extraction method by leaching of zinc-bearing phases. Chemical leaching of ZnO and Zn(OH)2 with a solution of inorganic ligand as thiosulphate and organic ligand such as polyethylene-polyamine appeared to be an efficient method. This detoxication method has been validated using these reagents on the real hydroxyde sludge stemming from industry. The result confirms that this treatment led to the extraction of the potential polluting zinc fraction contained in the waste. The last method studied the possibility of selective precipitation of heavy metal contained in liquid waste before classical physicochemical treatment. The reducing power of polysulfides and the formation possibility of metallic sulfides slighthly soluble bring about the selective precipitation of zinc sulfide and nickel in mixte solution of fer-zinc-nickel. The treatment of liquid waste containing heavy metal is possible. The final-products are a sulfur-metallic sulfur heavy metal mixture and an hydroxie ferric cake. The use of this products as new materials in different industries is actually under study

Full textMorocco experiences many problems due to dangerous industrial waste The damages done to the citizens and natural resources have been serious because no adequate means have been but forward to overcome such problems. The reasons for this lack are of social, political, economical, technical and legal nature. The household rubbish has been the only waste that held the attention of the Moroccan legislator who handed over the responsibility of rubbish collection to the communes. This district approach does not make the coordination task easier among the different administrations. Nor does it favour reconciliation among the different interests that are at stake. There's no law to organise the collection, recycling and disposal of toxic and dangerous wastes. The law project relating to the management of waste goes back to the classified legislation of institutions dated since 25th August 1914. This latter law needs reviewing. On the other hand, delegating, the management of waste the Ministry of interior is likely to be a handicap. It is desired to create a specialized institution to hand waste. The general public awareness is likely to be beneficial for both the environment and the future generations

Full textResearch works carried out on the toxicity towards aquatic organisms of micropolluants found in industrial waste. The toxicity of the water-extractable fraction of 12 solid industrial wastes from various origins has been studied. In the same way, the study of the toxicity of landfill leachates and runoff waters around the site has been performed. Chemical analyses in accordance with the waste management regulations have been carried out simultaneously. The toxicity has been assessed with a battery of non redundant tests using several organisms representative of different trophic levels in aquatic ecosystems and allowing evaluation of acute toxicity (Photobacterium phosphoreum luminescence inhibition assay, Daphnia magna immobilization assay) and chronic toxicity (Raphidocelis subcapitata growth inhibition assay, Daphnia magna reproduction inhibition assay) including genotoxicity (salmonella typhimurium his mutagenicity test). The main conclusions of the study are as follow : leaching of some wastes may lead to a non negligeable removal of toxic substances. The solidification/stabilization processes can drastically reduce the toxic water extractable fraction: it is the case with the cement-stabilized refuse from the treatment of smokes from the incineration of domestic wastes, toxicity can be hardly predicted from the results of the chemical analyses ; it is all the more difficult since the concentrations of pollutants are low, toxic effects may be observed in the short and/or in the long term ; in all cases, chronic toxicity cannot be evaluated from results of acute toxicity tests. The whole results argue for the association of biogical criteria to the chemical criteria used in waste management, specially to check the efficiency of security barriers implemented on landfills

Full textThe purpose of this report is to promote the implementation of a general method in respect of the environmental, safety and management systems for the pharmaceutical industry and more specifically for the industrial site for the Abbott laboratory. After giving an outline of the already existing environment, safety and hygiene management systems, we would develop the method and tools chosen to implement the management system for the Abbott site. Based on numerous examples we would also evaluate the results achieved by the new system. Eventually, we would analyse all sociological constraints and limits that held back the implementation of this environment, safety and hygiene management system that was chosen for the industrial site
Le, Hesran Corentin. "Integrating waste minimization concerns in operations scheduling." Thesis, Lyon, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019LYSEI111.
Full textFaced with growing environmental and economic concerns, the industrial world needs to adapt in order to tackle these issues. Industrial production is responsible for 83% of the global solid waste production and 40% of worldwide energy consumption. Operations scheduling appears to be a promising tool to address both the environmental and economic aspects of this problem. A literature review shows that numerous studies have been focusing on reducing energy consumption. This dissertation focuses on a relatively nascent field, namely the topic of waste generation minimization through operations scheduling. The motivating research question can be formulated as: How to integrate waste minimization into operations scheduling? A state-of-the-art on the subject shows a heterogeneous field with a disparate terminology, and a classification scheme is proposed to help unify research on this topic. To answer the research question, a methodology combining flow assessment tools and scheduling parameters is proposed, which enables the identification of waste-minimizing scheduling opportunities in a production system and the characterization of the corresponding scheduling problem. A case study is carried out and validates the applicability of this methodology and the interest of the results it provides. Based on those results, a single-machine waste-minimizing scheduling problem with reentrance in a make-to-order context is modeled using linear programming. Two solving approaches – one exact and one metaheuristic – are compared, and highlight the potential of operations scheduling to reduce industrial waste. Alternative solutions provide relevant trade-offs to decision-makers, offering significant waste reduction in return for a limited increase in inventory. As this methodology focuses on waste, it paves the way for the integration of new environmental aspects such as energy consumption and atmospheric emissions, as well as the social criteria in order to fully encompass the triple bottom line of sustainable development

Full textCurrently, the essential part of the money invested by the industrialist is for the water treatment. In France, most of the 20 billions francs per year devoted to the water treatment is used for the industrial activity. The global management of effluents favour the integration of clean technologies (optimisation, change and modification of the production process) in order to reduce the pollution problem at its source. Our study aims at the introduction of clean technologies in the metal workshops (consumer and generator of water and chemicals) by the development of two data management methods, which lead to two decision support systems. The aim of the first one is to minimise both the water consumption and the wastewater disposal by optimising the production process (optimum yield and efficiency of the rinsing baths. The second one concerns the choice of valorisation techniques considering the valorisation objectives, the effluents characteristics and the parameters limiting the use of the techniques. Our approach fits into a global management method for the metal finishing industry wastewater. Its aim is to limit the quantity of wastewater generated, to valorise effluents and by this way to develop the clean technologies

Full textAccording to Québec’s Règlement sur les matières dangereuses, wood residues containing resin are likely to be toxic residual dangerous matters because of their formaldehyde content. The management of these residues is problematic for the secondary board manufacturers because the majority might not operate a combustion boiler with high enough power to burn board residues in conformity with regulatory requirements. The recovery of these residues could be possible, but no decision can be taken without knowing the nature of the residues. The objective of this study is to characterize the residues coming from the secondary board manufacturers in the province of Québec in order to find opportunities for recuperating, recycling or disposing of these residues. A survey of secondary board processing plants has been conducted to draw a picture of the disposal of residues. A mail questionnaire was sent to a sample of plants within each industrial sector. The five points of contact method was applied, yielding a response rate of 32%. A quantification of the residues was made and the data was used to extrapolate the results to the whole of Québec industry. A segmentation of the results according to the size of the plant or to the industrial sector was made and significant differences were found between classes regarding the management, the use and the contamination of the residues. The majority of secondary board manufacturers send their board residues to landfill sites. This is the case of most small size mills. The survey indicates that 30 percent of the mills have experienced serious problem in managing these residues and they have already tried to find a better solution to dispose of them.

Full textRecycling is a complex activity with very long process and sometimes little known to be developed. It uses technologies from different application domains. While this emerging sector is characterized by a lack of structuring data, information and knowledge on the one hand, and by a lack of management tools and sharing of these elements between the various stakeholders in the sector of other. These players may not use the same language and have different perceptions about the product. In this thesis we propose an organizational model and information system for optimal recycling. Therefore, we have previously defined a reference model for product recycling, shared design, uses and recycling, before including it in an architecture of collaborative work. The architecture proposed in this work is based on the PPO model, a meta-model that incorporates three sub-models product-process-organization, defined for the collaborative design by the lead authors. This meta-model incorporates the multiple views of actors for better collaboration, and will have an overview on the product from the design stage. The information system platform dedicated to the recycling process for manufactured products is then developed from the proposed model. Architecture is an object model based on the UML standard and its implementation is done in Java / UML with a case of application in the automotive industry that we presented at the end of the thesis

Full textBiofuels become, in more and more countries, the environmentally friendly solution against the prospect of the reduction fossil fuels. Nevertheless, one must know that the production of ethanol generates an important amount of highly concentrated organic liquid wastes. We examine different options of waste management. Then, we focus on deep-well injection as a possible solution in the case of the Distillery of Savanna, located at Bois Rouge, La Réunion, Indian Ocean. Under 80m of silty alluviums, the confined volcanic aquifer as target for injection is relevant. We find that clogging appears, due to suspended solids and to biological activity. We suggest that leakance explain the lack of influence on the observation wells. We also show that aquifer's characteristics have a transient behaviour, depending on the flow rate. Numerical simulations give a travel time of 4 years until the discharge into the ocean, where ecological surveys attest a highly positive influence on benthic fauna

Full textDespite the precautions taken by Europe through numerous regulatory texts, the current management of industrial wastewater shows various problems. The achievement of water bodies quality targets set for 2015 will go through a real ownership of the issues by every actor in order to implement customized treatment processes. In the current framework of industrial ecology, waste becomes product; we therefore explored the possibilities of using quality management principles prescribed by the ISO 9000 for industrial wastewater management, with potential customers such as industries (reuse), communal wastewater treatment plants, but also ecosystem receptors. The consideration of ecosystems as customers nevertheless raises sensitive issues such as the assessment of their needs. The complexity of this evaluation led us to consider the territory in terms of ecosystem services (that is to say, services provided ecosystems that contribute to human well-being) to identify human targets able to express their needs concerning their environment. These needs are then converted, according to local and regulatory data, in qualitative requirements for liquid emissions. This approach was materialized as a tool for industrials or other actors with no particular competence in the field of water management. The contribution of this thesis is the analysis of local environmental issues to contribute to the specification of the treatment processes of industrial aqueous effluents by setting release thresholds

Full textThis thesis aims at examining the ethical, social and political issues raised by waste management of industrialized societies. Philosophical analyses of waste management generally adopt a symbolic approach that tends, in one hand, to ignore political and social issues and, on the other hand, to disregard the human-nature relation since environmental issues of waste management are limited to technical sphere. Yet, I suggest that this dual approach must be criticized and question the idea that technicians should deal with the waste treatment while philosophers (or sociologists) should only considerer the symbolic significance. This work argues that waste management of industrialized societies is not only a technical issue since its continuously in relation with the social sphere and among other things raises issues of justice. In this regard, I support that the environmental issue caused by waste management can only be grasped if we assume a conception of nature as community: when wastes affect (unevenly) the environment in which people live, wastes also have an impact on the populations because people nurture interdependent relationship with their environment. Once this has been established, I demonstrate that a cultural vision of environmental inequalities should be defended in order to identify and determine normative principles of waste justice

Full textEfficient use of by-products is essential as natural ressources are increasingly scarce. Industrial strategies to adress this issue are more efficient when they are developed on a system-based level, such as with regional industrial symbioses, rather then with individual or isolated approaches.Regional industrial symbiosis projects involve different industrial activities based on a territory and that are to be engaged collectively in order to make structural changes within the regional metabolism. This kind of project might be promoted by individuals or organisations legitimated by the whole of industrial symbiosis'actors. A facilitator group initiates the project, catalysing changes, based on a plausible promise of benefits. Those considered changes are gradually adapted and refined by the involved actors. In such a way, plausible benefits must match to their model of choice that comprises environmental, among others, dimensions. While methods and tools dedicated to environmental assessment of product were developped under strong research effort, the issue of environmental assessment fo regional industrial symbioses so far as has been weakly studied. For that purpose Life-cycle assessment (LCA) is presented as an ultimate environmental assessment method. However, LCA was not elaborated in oder to account for individual environmental perspective, nor to address structural system changes induced consequently to the implementation of a regional industrial sysbiosis nore its temporal effects on the environment, but instead LCA addresses global environmental issues related to a product. Starting from this analysis, and dealing with outcomes from social sciences, we propose to adopt an anthropocentric conception of the environment, as a system of complex subject-object relationships, for which we identify key elements of the perception of environemental consequences. Those key elements enable to build a logical basis composed of three environments that enable to cover, and thus to consider, actors' perception of environmental consequences related to the project. We present a participatory method that embeds this logical basis and suggests successively to 1) identify the environmental phenomena of interest related to the project, 2) design corresponding indicators considering concomitantly available data about the biophysical characteristics and scientific knowledge about the impact chains, 3) assess the environmental consequences. We illustrate the method and its epistemological foundations with a case study: a project that aims to recycle organic residues in agriculture in Réunion Island

Full textThe subject of the thesis is the history of oeec's first joint undertaking, which associated 13 european countries. It is esentially based on the company's archives. It comprises five parts. The first four parts follow the different steps of the live of the company, and every part ends with a detailed chronology of events in civil nuclear development. The last part is made up of two thematical essays. The first prat shows how the chemical processing, which was originally linked with the plutonium bomb acquisition programs, was demilitarized and entered the field of the technical european cooperation projects developped at the oeec. It tells how this cooperation lead to the signature of an international convention in 1957. The second part is devoted to the organization of european cooperation, as well on political as on technical levels. This cooperation resulted in teh building of a laboratory for applied research and development and of a plant, both located at mol in belgium. The reprocessing plant was inaugurated in 1966. The third part relates the ten years of reprocessing activities in the plant. It examines the very concrete condtions of starting and improving these activities, evokes the difficulties in cooperation at the beginning of the 70's and ends with a global balance of eurochemic's reprocessing years. The fourth part describes the fifteen years separating the end of reprocessing at mol from the dissolution of the company. During this period a complete program of various radioactive waste processing was fulfilled and the dismantling of the reprocessing plant began. Full textMarginal materials and lands (brownfields, byproducts, inert wastes), the management of which causes significant environmental impacts, can be valorized through soil construction in order to grow nonfood biomass (e.g. fiber, energy). This may reduce their volume and increase use of renewable resources without direct or indirect competition with food crops or biodiversity. This thesis assesses the sustainability of such supply chains with Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), considered one of the most pertinent existing methods. This thesis introduces indicators complementary to current use, in order to improve LCA’s exhaustivity and its taking into account of marginal lands’ specificities. It prioritizes impacts with respect to planetary boundaries (i.e. maximum impacts levels acceptable to avoid ecosystem disruption), average impacts in studied geographic context and added value of the supply chains. Most of these suggestions are applied to the study of a soil construction process using inert and organic wastes (LORVER). The high diversity of materials and alternative management strategies and the most certain tradeoffs and critical parameters are assessed combining uncertainty and multidimensional analysis tools. Constructed soil’s ability to stabilize carbon and pollutants is demonstrated to be its major condition for sustainability. For other impacts (ecosystem services, air quality, resources), LORVER is even less pertinent when the need for material transportation increases, and more importantly if those materials could have otherwise been used to replace commodities polluting to produce. These results highlight when LORVER can be seen as sustainable
