In 1978, only 24% of 8th grade students in the United States correctly answered whether 12/13+7/8 was closest to 1, 2, 19, or 21 (Carpenter, Corbitt, Kepner, Lindquist, & Reys, 1980). In 2014, only 27% of 8th grade students selected the correct answer to the same problem, despite the ensuing forty years of effort to improve students’ conceptual understanding (Lortie-Forgues, Tian, & Siegler, 2015).
