Abstract:
Humankind is facing global ecological problems and resulting from these social issues, while continually destroying the ecosystems which are the life-support mechanisms of the planet and human civilization. The socio-economic system is largely influenced by top-down decision making. Political decisions are a high leverage in sustainability issues, but contemporarily they are conducted in the reductionist way, focusing on short-term profit and jeopardizing the planet and people in the long run. The thesis explores the ways of integrating more holistic approach into political decision making. The study describes the connection between cognitive processes (e.g. learning or decision making) and somatic experiences: human decisions are considered a dynamic product of interaction between the cognition, body and environment. The theory of deep learning helps to understand how decision making can be transformed, and embodied cognitive science explains what facilitates the process of deep learning. The study develops the concept of “body-environment dialogue” — the somatic and cognitive integration of an agent and the context through which the agent receives non-verbal information processed then into the agent’s inner knowledge. The way of processing the information, unlike analytical thinking, is grounded into mindfulness and reflection. It results in the holistic insight about the global socio-ecological system and its interconnections, awakes intrinsic values and causes the change in one’s decisions and actions. Embodied experiences and connection with natural environment are considered the ways to facilitate deep learning which, in turn, affects decision making. The empirical part of the research tests the possibility to affect decision making through embodied contact with nature and the local context. The experimental study project based on 3-day outdoor experiential course demonstrates a certain change in the participants’ decision making as well as illustrates the challenges and drawbacks of such approach.

Abstract:
Dopamine has an important role in normal cognition and reward processing, both of which are impaired in disorders involving dopamine dysfunction such as addiction, schizophrenia, and Parkinson's disease. However, our understanding of the interplay between different aspects of the dopamine system and reward-guided behavior in humans is limited. Food is an important type of reward that is critical for survival and impacts the decisions we make every day. Here, we characterize the relationship between two food-reward related phenotypes and dopamine synthesis capacity (related to tonic dopamine) as well as dopamine D1 and D2 receptor availability in healthy humans. First, we examined the link between dopamine synthesis and receptor availability and body mass regulation in 117 individuals with body mass index (BMI) values ranging from normal to obese. We found that current BMI was related to a pattern of increased dopamine synthesis in the hypothalamus, a region important for homeostatic control of appetite, but decreased dopamine D2 receptor availability in the midbrain, where D2 autoreceptors regulate dopamine release throughout the brain. This suggests that increased BMI is related to a dopamine imbalance between homeostatic drivers of appetite and reward system regulatory control mechanisms that could result in an overactive, unregulated intake of food. Building on this finding, we studied the link between dopamine synthesis capacity and receptor availability and an important food-reward related behavior, foraging. Fifty-seven healthy volunteers completed a computer-based foraging task where we measured their threshold for leaving one group of rewards to search for another in four different reward environments varying from a low to high rate of reward receipt. We found that two particular patterns of dopamine synthesis and receptor availability in the anterior cingulate cortex and basal ganglia were linked to the amount that individuals changed their threshold based on the reward rate of the environment. Finally, since the prefrontal cortex is known to be important for reward-guided behavior, we implemented two methodological advancements aimed to address limitations that make it difficult to measure cortical dopamine in humans with PET imaging. The first method involves partial volume correction and surface-based smoothing in order to increase the signal to noise in the cortex. The second method is a data-driven PET data parcellation and automated reference region selection algorithm to optimize the voxels included in the reference region. In conclusion, we have characterized the dopaminergic contribution of two different foodreward guided phenotypes and have developed two techniques that will aid future research on the role of cortical dopamine. Understanding the neural mechanisms underlying these rewardguided behaviors helps us to not only understand normal behavior, but also serves as a reference for comparison when studying related pathological states.

A main challenge in medicine concerns questions of how to integrate the context and values of patient perspectives with general conceptions of illness and treatment. With medicine increasingly focused on patient-centered and individualized care, approaches to medicine must find ways to gain access to and understand the patient in such a way that recognizes her story as real while at the same time maintaining the value of medicine as an objective practice. Adding to this is the reality that under current models of medicine and decision-making in medicine, healthcare disparities persist for persons belonging to marginalized and vulnerable populations, including racial and ethnic minorities, women, and LGBTQ persons, amongst others. I argue that an approach integrative of shared decision-making built upon a phenomenological framework is a good alternative on which to try and understand questions like these and begin to address disparities in healthcare.

Abstract:
Although the health benefits of mindfulness are clearly established, the question of the cognitive mechanisms underlying these benefits remains poorly understood in neuroscience research. Among the potential mechanisms, the quality of body awareness is central. Body awareness results from the processing and integration of interoceptive and exteroceptive information at the cerebral level. Our first two experiments focus on the physiological evaluation of body awareness. The initial step was to study the Heartbeat Evoked Potential (HEP). This electro-neurophysiological signal, which reflects the integration of the cardiac signal at the cerebral level, has been proposed as a marker of the quality of interoception. Our first study focused on evaluating relationships between HEP amplitude, the quality of interoception and trait mindfulness. The results showed that HEP amplitude is unrelated to trait mindfulness, and does not account for the high interoceptive sensitivity associated with it.The second step focused on the physiological, postural signal. Specifically, we addressed the following question: Does the analysis of the postural signal, particularly in the closed eyes condition where body awareness plays a determinant role in postural control, help us to evaluate trait mindfulness? We demonstrated that numerical models are able to estimate trait mindfulness based on the characteristics of the postural signal. These models are most accurate when they are developed from data collected with eyes closed. These results confirm that the body awareness mechanism plays a part in mindfulness, and that posture provides information about the level of mindfulness.Furthermore, data reported in the literature show that the processing of body information impacts how the individual interacts with the environment. In the third experiment reported in this thesis, we evaluated the effect of the variation in vestibular information on the cognitive functions of inhibition and decision-making. We observed that the perturbation of vestibular information degrades the inhibition function, and that this degradation is a function of the relevance of vestibular information. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the processing of exteroceptive body information accelerates the decision-making process, due to a less conservative decision threshold, which degrades cognitive performance.Overall, our findings suggest that exteroceptive bodily information, relative to the position of the body in the environment, is a key element in body-brain interactions and shapes the adaptation of the individual to changes in the environment. Moreover, our findings highlight that posture is a useful biomarker when assessing body awareness, and could guide interventions aimed at improving mindfulness and body awareness

Abstract:
The car body shop has become one of the most significant steps in the automobile value chain nowadays. The usage of a variety of different materials and configurations of current vehicle bodies in lightweight construction leads to new body concepts such as the multi-material design. However, the specific properties of individual materials lead to new challenges, especially in the joining technology where existing technologies face numerous restrictions. Therefore, new joining processes are required, which also results in an increased diversity of joining technologies and complexity of the decision-making. To date, the selection of a joining technology for a component is mostly based on the experience of the product development. The selection process of extant scientific approaches, however, is often limited to the economic assessment of joining technologies for individual joints. An integrated assessment approach, which already includes the aspects of joining technologies with regards to economic, ecological and technological factors for an entire assembly during the definition of material and design, does not exist. Due to the non-transparency of the overall monetary and non-monetary impact of the respective joining technology, the need for a methodological support for the selection process is derived. An essential part of this research work is the development of a multidimensional selection methodology to allow an optimized decision-making in the early stage of car body development.

Introduction: Studies have found that body image of women with breast cancer impacts relationship with their partners. Breast reconstruction helps women regain their pre-cancer appearance, alleviates body image problems and partner relationship. However, women still feel incomplete after post-mastectomy reconstructive surgery. Couple-based interventions have been validated to improve women’s relationship with partner. As a result, we suggest that the more dyadic involvement in decision making for breast reconstruction surgery, much better body image and less decision regret women report. Objectives: This study examines the relationship between dyadic involvements in decision making for receiving breast reconstruction and women’s body image as well as decision regret after breast reconstruction has taken place. Methods: Convenience sampling within a correlational study design was used. Women who had breast cancer without recurrence, finished all active treatment, and had commitment partners were recruited. The “Decision-Making Process Regarding Breast Reconstruction Scale” included medical information and perceived partner involvement domains, “Body Image Scale” and “Decision Regret Scale” were used to evaluate the relationship between dyadic decision involvement, women’s body image and decision regret. Results: Results showed that partner involvement was not related to women’s body image, though it was related to women’s decision regret. Additionally, the more medical information women’s partners understood, and the more partners’ involvement in decision making process, the less decision regret women reported (r = -0.33, & -0.21 respectively), Moreover, the more medical information women understood, the better body image reported (r = -0.22) and the less decision regret they experienced (r = -0.49). On the other hand, the greater the women’s perceived partner involvement was, the less decision regret they experienced (r = -0.27), though perceived partner involvement was not highly significant regarding body image. Path analysis showed that the amount of medical information women received directly had an impact on body image (-0.357), and body image directly affected decision regret (0.460). The amount of medical information also had a direct effect on decision regret (-0.345). Overall, dyadic involvement in decision making for receiving breast reconstruction and body image could explain 42.2% of women’s decision regret. Overall, this model had good fit(χ2(p) = 6.130 (0.294), SRMR = 0.0525 and RMSEA = 0.047). Conclusion: This study showed that the amount of medical information women understand directly affected their body image and decision regret, and their body image also directly influenced their decision regret. Women’s partners involved in breast reconstruction decision making can also reduce their decision regret. Therefore, it is recommended that the medical team should provide complete medical information, and women’s partners should be included in the decision-making process. By dyadic involvement and discussions, partners can help women with breast cancer make a more appropriate decision regarding breast reconstruction so as to improve the women's body image and reduce their degree of decision regret.

Abstract:
Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF EDUCATION In the Department of Educational Planning and Administration of the University of Zululand, 2004.
The objective to undertake this study determines whether and to what extent the parent component of the School Governing Body plays a role in decision-making in schools. The study conducted in Umzumbe Circuit schools, under the Port-Shepstone District in the Pietermaritzburg region of KwaZulu Natal Province. The research brings to the fore a distinction and overlap between governance and decision-making. It highlights the nature and importance of the involvement of the parent component in decision-making on school issues. The study demonstrates that school governance and decision-making entail the application of conceptual, technical and human relation skills. Based on findings emanating from the analysis and interpretation of data from the respondents, the study concludes that, ■* Some school principals do not effectively implement the directives portrayed in policy documents of the Department of Education. This situation hinders the participation of some parents in decision-making in schools; • Many parents do not have the necessary knowledge • about school governance in general and lack the necessary expertise required to enable them to participate effectively in decision-making on school issues; From the conclusions made, the study makes recommendations directed to school principals, schools, SGBs and district officials, SGBs and the Department of Education.

With the popularization of education and female employment increased, it riase woman self-consciousness. Women not only cared about outside beauty, but also focused on inner beauty. Lingerie was not just clothes to cover body, but a way to express personal taste and beauty. The population of mature women kept increased, however the population of young women kept decreased. The young generation was struggling in 22K salary, but mature women already had good financial assets. The different population structure and economic environment challenge to traditional lingerie market. Mature women don’t have much choice on lingerie products. We found that it is difficult to get the report for mature women’s decision- making about lingerie. This study analyses the mature women’s decision- making about lingerie through mature women lifestyle, body image and preference of products. According to the research, we divided 50-64 years mature women lifestyle as three market segmentations “Rational information Buyer", " Conscious Buyer” & ” Fashion Buyer”. The results of research: 1. For body image: There is partial significant. There is only “maintain appearance “ is significant 2. For preference of product attributes, demographics and consumer’s decision-making are significant. 3. For the preference lingerie style: Mature women all prefer soft-wire bra, but “rational information buyer” also preference non-wire bra. “Fashion Buyer” not only prefer soft-wire bra, but also prefer functional hard-wire bra. Based on the research findings, we provided recommendations for products, price, channels, advertisement and promotion strategies to the lingerie industrial reference.

Abstract:
In some schools in Gauteng the School Governing Bodies operate in such a way that some principals dominate them and impose rules upon teachers and pretend as if the directives are instructions from the SGBs whereas they are not. According to Heystek (in De Groof, Heystek, Malherbe and Squelch, 1997:152), in many cases, the true focus of power and authority remains where it has always been. This simply means that sometimes conflict will arise between the school principal and the School Governing Body (SGB) because some school principals will try by all means to cling to power even if the South African Schools Act tries to decentralise the power of school governance. The thesis focuses on aspects of the relationship between the school principals and the School Governing Bodies (SGBs), their duties and responsibilities, and the effects of their relationship on the learners, teachers and parents. A proper demarcation of duties and responsibilities of the School Governing Bodies and those of school principals will help them to govern and manage the schools harmoniously and effectively. The irony is that principals must empower and train their SGBs who are supposed to be their partners but who sometimes become their competitors and the contradiction is how can one empower his/her competitor.

Abstract:
Decision-making by the statutory body in the relation to the capital company's internal affairs Abstract This dissertation considers the issue of decision-making by the statutory body in relation to the internal affairs of a capital company. The second chapter analyses existing case law concerning the concept of business management and compares it with doctrinal sources. In this context, business management is distinguished from other areas of responsibility the statutory body has in relation to the company's internal affairs. It also assesses to what extent the designation of business management as an internal branch of power is truly appropriate. The subsequent chapter discusses the competencies of the general meeting which directly affect the area of making business decisions; namely the amendment of articles of association, the approval of substantial property transactions and the power of general meeting to lay down the basic principles of how the business is managed. The fourth chapter is about the boundaries arising from the very notion of business management as compared to doctrinal sources and the practice of the courts. It draws conclusions from own research as well. In the fifth part of the dissertation, the process of decision-making in regard to business management is analysed. In particular it...

Tsotetsi, Stephen Morena. "The training of school governing bodies in the Free State Province: an education management perspective." Thesis, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/2305.

Abstract:
The aim of the study was to investigate the training of school governing bodies in the Free State Province from an education management point of view. Since 1994 the South African government has adopted a number of policy documents aimed at democratizing education in the country. The transformation of education in the new South African context encompasses the idea of partnership in which participants - such as parents, educators, learners (in secondary schools) play an active role in taking decisions on behalf of the school. The State alone cannot control schools, but has to share its power with other stakeholders. However, this can only happen if participants in school governance are trained to have power and the capacity to decide on matters affecting their schools. Hence, training is the cornerstone of affirming governors in the execution of their roles and responsibilities. Since school governing bodies are composed of a cross section of people with different ideologies, expectations and levels of education - training is necessary to prepare then for co-operative governance. Without adequate and on-going in-service training, it is unlikely that school governing body members can make informed decisions. The empirical method, namely qualitative research, was successful in obtaining information from participants about the training offered to them. It also established how participants felt and thought about their experiences and perceptions about the training they received, whether it built capacity or not. A number of recommendations were made with regard to the research findings for stakeholders to note.

Feather, Wendy. "The emotional effects of sizing and fit on purchasing behaviour in women's clothing." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10321/775.

Abstract:
Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Master in Technology: Marketing, Durban University of Technology, 2011.
Satisfying consumers’ needs and wants has always been a primary goal of marketing. These are fulfilled when consumers make the right choices of products to purchase. The driving force behind such purchasing decisions is generally regarded as motivation and this varies between consumers, with each one having their own reasons for their respective choices. For the convenience of consumers, women’s clothing is displayed in stores according to the body sizes of the garments, as reflected on each of their labels. However, this practice can be confusing to consumers because manufacturers use differing sizing systems. The resultant sizing and fit problems in women’s clothing have been documented in many studies around the world. The aim of this study is to explore the emotional effects of sizing and fit on purchasing behaviour in women’s clothing. It looks at current literature regarding emotions in purchasing, consumer decision making and sizing and fit and focuses on sizing and fit problems encountered when women try on clothing in a store. Their emotions whilst going through this process are identified and the subsequent effects of these emotions on their purchasing behaviour are examined. The study firstly reveals that emotions are felt, in varying degrees, by women consumers arising from sizing and fit problems when trying on clothing in stores. The results show that positive emotions are not felt strongly. Secondly, the study identifies the influences which emotions have on purchasing behaviour. The results indicate that positive emotions have a significant influence on purchasing, whilst negative emotions have a lesser effect. Thirdly, the study reveals that in the relationship between satisfaction and the demographic profile, age played a significant role in the scoring of positive emotions when respondents experience inconsistency of sizes between stores.

Gwija, Mxhasi. "The role of parents in enhancing academic performance in secondary schools in the Metro-Central Education District, Western Cape." Diss., 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/21800.

Abstract:
The role of parents in their children’s education presents significant evidence in schools’ academic results, when parental roles in education are given priority. It is noted that parents play a significant role in improving a school’s academic results. The aim of this study was to investigate the techniques utilised by schoolteachers to involve parents in children’s education in selected secondary schools within the Metro-Central Education District, Western Cape. A qualitative research approach was utilised, employing research methods which included face-to-face interviews, reading school polices and going through parents’ meeting minutes. The investigation focused on two secondary schools that were purposefully selected to participate in the study. This investigation revealed that participants in the study overlooked the role of parents in their schools. Therefore, although they involve parents in some school activities, there is a need for training on how the school principals should optimally involve parents in school activities.
