Design frequently involves a series of trade-offs to obtain the "optimal" solution to a design problem. Green roofs have many different characteristics based on a variety of variables. Designers typically weigh the impacts of these characteristics in an implicit process based on intuition or past experience. But since vegetated roofing is a relatively complex and comparatively new technology to many practitioners, a rational, explicit method to help organize and rank the trade-offs made during the design process is useful. Sometimes decisions imply trade-offs that force people to accept missing an opportunity in the past or in the future. It has not yet been clarified whether a past miss or a future miss elicits more regret. In a direct comparison, Shani, Danziger, and Zeelenberg found support for the greater impact of future misses. In an experimental design with 216 students, we replicated their study and tested the strength of the future miss in a separate evaluation and with different periods. The results show that future misses cause less regret than past misses do when evaluated separately. However,

In particular, we are interested in dynamic, time critical scenarios. This leads first of all to a novel process known as strategy regeneration, whereby the parameter values representing the users and the task at hand are refreshed periodically, in order to make ef
