Froukh, Mohammed Lu’ay Jamal. "Decision-support system for domestic water demand forecasting and management." Thesis, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/413.

Full text
Abstract:
A generic but flexible decision-support system for domestic water demand forecasting and management (DFMS) has been developed as part of a highlyintegrated decision-support system for river-basin management. Its purpose is to provide water-resources planners with the facilities for estimating future water demand for any demand region and time period, having regard to the possibility of introducing demand-management measures. The system has the capability of predicting domestic-water demand by various methods according to the data availability, computing conservation effectiveness due to the implementation of various demand-management measures, forecasting the number of customers for different consumption units (person, household, water connection) and facilitating the development of demand-scenarios for eveluating various options. The system is designed in such a way that makes it easy to use for both novice and experienced users since it is driven by a menu system which relies on a mouse rather than the keyboard. Moreover, the communication between user and the system is by means of a user-friendly interface which makes extensive use of hypertext and colour graphics in presenting the results. Briefly, DFMS comprises the following components: a GIS that stores, displays and analyses all geo-coded information such as satellite imagery, urban areas, cities and towns, etc.; • a database which provides access to non-spatial data such as demand-area location and characteristics including top-level descriptors such as population, total demand, per-capita consumption, etc.; • an expert system which uses the rule-based inference for data entry and predicting values (quantitative or qualitative) of variables from the knowledgebase; . four methods of demand forecasting ranging from superficial to detailed, namely time extrapolation, econometric variables, end-uses variables and households classification; a multi-objective decision component which helps the user to determine the most appropriate forecasting method and conservation measures; • a set of mathematical models to provide the analytical capability for quantifying descriptors, producing multiple outputs etc.; • a user-interface with access to the various functional components of the system and the various help/explain files; • a set of pre- and post-processors which support editing of the inputs data and the visualisation or analysis of model output, in addition to handling scenarios for each of the models or variables; • a set of help files which are used to provide the user with the necessary assistance if for any reason, a more detailed explanation is required, based on a hypertext; In order to demonstrate the system capability, DFMS has been applied to the Swindon demand area of Thames Water Utilities Ltd.

Liou, Yihwa Irene. "The use of a group decision support system environment for knowledge acquisition." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/184717.

Full text
Abstract:
Knowledge acquisition is not only the most important but also most difficult task knowledge engineers face when they begin to develop expert systems. One of the first problems they encounter is the need to identify at least one individual with appropriate expertise who is able and willing to participate in the development project. They must also be able to use a variety of techniques to elicit the knowledge that they require. These include such traditional knowledge acquisition methods as interviewing, thinking-aloud protocol analysis, on-site observation, and repertory grid analysis. As expert system applications have become more complex, knowledge engineers have found that they must work with and tap the domain knowledge of not one but several individuals. They have also discovered that the traditional methods do not work well in eliciting the knowledge residing in a group of individuals. The complexity of the systems, the difficulties inherent in working with multiple experts, and the lack of appropriate tools have combined to make the knowledge acquisition task even more arduous and time consuming. Group Decision Support Systems (GDSS) have been proven to be useful tools for improving the efficiency and effectiveness of a multiplicity of group activities. It would appear that by bringing experts together in a GDSS environment and using computer-based tools to facilitate group interaction and information exchange, a knowledge engineer could eliminate many of these problems. This research was designed to explore the possibility of using a GDSS environment to facilitate knowledge acquisition from multiple experts. The primary research question was "Does A GDSS environment facilitate the acquisition of knowledge from multiple experts?" The principle contributions of this research are (1) demonstration of the first use of a GDSS environment to elicit knowledge from multiple experts; (2) establishment of a methodology for knowledge acquisition in a GDSS environment; (3) development of process models for acquiring knowledge; (4) development of guidelines for designing and evaluating group support tools; and (5) recognition of some implications of using a computer-supported cooperative approach to extract knowledge from a group of experts. Abstract:
Decision support systems will be an asset dealing with the complexity involved in many decision situations for companies, organizations and societies by integrating different aspects into a holistic pattern. That creates a close relationship to systems science since systems thinking promote holism as a profitable way to handle complexity. The ideal decision support system should not be used to make automatic decisions but to assist a human being in the decision process. That process is sometimes described as a model consisting of the phases, intelligence, design and choice. Intelligence is needed to understand the situation and find the information that is needed to continue the process. Design means designing different alternatives and in the last phase, choice, the alternatives are evaluated and the best alternative is chosen. A good decision support system should give the user assistance through the whole process. The main purpose of our research is identifying the process of building an efficient Decision Support System. The target groups are the people who are working with multinational companies that are specialized in constructing and delivering decision support systems to end users. The number of target companies involved in this study is only two and is limited Indian Multinational companies. The theoretical study helps in identifying the basic characteristics of a decision support system, exploring the types of decision support systems used in current organizations, resulting if there is any particular standard for constructing DSS today and signifying approach for constructing a user friendly decision support system by analyzing the existing literature related to DSS. At the same time, empirical study advances the research problem from a practical angle. The conclusion for this research is a comprehensive report in relation to the varieties of Decision Support Systems used in today’s organizations, qualities that a decision support system ought to possess and suggested process to be implemented for building an efficient decision support system.

Wei, Peng. "Web and knowledge-based decision support system for measurement uncertainty evaluation." Thesis, Brunel University, 2009. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/10114.

Full text
Abstract:
In metrology, measurement uncertainty is understood as a range in which the true value of the measurement is likely to fall in. The recent years have seen a rapid development in evaluation of measurement uncertainty. ISO Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement (GUM 1995) is the primary guiding document for measurement uncertainty. More recently, the Supplement 1 to the "Guide to the expression of uncertainty in measurement" – Propagation of distributions using a Monte Carlo method (GUM SP1) was published in November 2008. A number of software tools for measurement uncertainty have been developed and made available based on these two documents. The current software tools are mainly desktop applications utilising numeric computation with limited mathematical model handling capacity. A novel and generic web-based application, web-based Knowledge-Based Decision Support System (KB-DSS), has been proposed and developed in this research for measurement uncertainty evaluation. A Model-View-Controller architecture pattern is used for the proposed system. Under this general architecture, a web-based KB-DSS is developed based on an integration of the Expert System and Decision Support System approach. In the proposed uncertainty evaluation system, three knowledge bases as sub-systems are developed to implement the evaluation for measurement uncertainty. The first sub-system, the Measurement Modelling Knowledge Base (MMKB), assists the user in establishing the appropriate mathematical model for the measurand, a critical process for uncertainty evaluation. The second sub-system, GUM Framework Knowledge Base, carries out the uncertainty evaluation process based on the GUM Uncertainty Framework using symbolic computation, whilst the third sub-system, GUM SP1 MCM Framework Knowledge Base, conducts the uncertainty calculation according to the GUM SP1 Framework numerically based on Monte Carlo Method. The design and implementation of the proposed system and sub-systems are discussed in the thesis, supported by elaboration of the implementation steps and examples. Discussions and justifications on the technologies and approaches used for the sub-systems and their components are also presented. These include Drools, Oracle database, Java, JSP, Java Transfer Object, AJAX and Matlab. The proposed web-based KB-DSS has been evaluated through case studies and the performance of the system has been validated by the example results. As an established methodology and practical tool, the research will make valuable contributions to the field of measurement uncertainty evaluation.

Yoberd, Belmond. "An energy expert advisor and decision support system for aluminium melting and casting." Thesis, Kingston University, 1994. http://eprints.kingston.ac.uk/20580/.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this project was to develop and implement an expert advisor system to provide information for selecting and scheduling several items of small foundry plants using electric resistance bale-out furnaces, to optimise metal use and reduce energy costs. This involved study in formulating the procedures and developing a “foundry user friendly” expert system for giving advice to unskilled operatives in what was a complex multi- variable process. This system (FOES) included investigation and development of an advising system on the casting of a large numbers of different objects cast under different operating conditions and electricity tariffs. Knowledge elicitation techniques were developed and used during the complicated knowledge election process. Since this research programme intended to look at the complete process of melting, holding and pouring of the aluminium alloy, complex electricity tariffs were incorporated into the expert system in order to accurately calculate the energy cost of each process. A sub-section of the FOES system (DAD) could advise the unskilled foundry operative identify and eliminate the seven most common aluminium alloy casting defect by using a novel technique of incorporating actual defect photographs which were digitally scanned into the system.

Ahmad, Abdul-Rahim. "An Intelligent Expert System for Decision Analysis and Support in Multi-Attribute Layout Optimization." Thesis, University of Waterloo, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10012/785.

Full text
Abstract:
Layout Decision Analysis and Design is a ubiquitous problem in a variety of work domains that is important from both strategic and operational perspectives. It is largely a complex, vague, difficult, and ill-structured problem that requires intelligent and sophisticated decision analysis and design support.

Inadequate information availability, combinatorial complexity, subjective and uncertain preferences, and cognitive biases of decision makers often hamper the procurement of a superior layout configuration. Consequently, it is desirable to develop an intelligent decision support system for layout design that could deal with such challenging issues by providing efficient and effective means of generating, analyzing, enumerating, ranking, and manipulating superior alternative layouts.

We present a research framework and a functional prototype for an interactive Intelligent System for Decision Support and Expert Analysis in Multi-Attribute Layout Optimization (IDEAL) based on soft computing tools. A fundamental issue in layout design is efficient production of superior alternatives through the incorporation of subjective and uncertain design preferences. Consequently, we have developed an efficient and Intelligent Layout Design Generator (ILG) using a generic two-dimensional bin-packing formulation that utilizes multiple preference weights furnished by a fuzzy Preference Inferencing Agent (PIA). The sub-cognitive, intuitive, multi-facet, and dynamic nature of design preferences indicates that an automated Preference Discovery Agent (PDA) could be an important component of such a system. A user-friendly, interactive, and effective User Interface is deemed critical for the success of the system. The effectiveness of the proposed solution paradigm and the implemented prototype is demonstrated through examples and cases.

This research framework and prototype contribute to the field of layout decision analysis and design by enabling explicit representation of experts? knowledge, formal modeling of fuzzy user preferences, and swift generation and manipulation of superior layout alternatives. Such efforts are expected to afford efficient procurement of superior outcomes and to facilitate cognitive, ergonomic, and economic efficiency of layout designers as well as future research in related areas.

Applications of this research are broad ranging including facilities layout design, VLSI circuit layout design, newspaper layout design, cutting and packing, adaptive user interfaces, dynamic memory allocation, multi-processor scheduling, metacomputing, etc.

Bird, Simon N. "Decision problem structuring for selection of fixed firefighting systems." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2014. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/17409.

Full text
Abstract:
Active fire protection systems are an essential fire safety management tool, particularly in potentially high financial and risk consequence scenarios. In the UK and Europe over recent decades regulatory changes have been successful in creating an environment in which more innovation can take place. Increased numbers of fixed firefighting system types are now available to the user. However, not all systems offered are equal in terms of; suitability, cost, maturity of supporting knowledge, and overall performance or in-service reliability. Understanding of the systems performance and its limitations and how to match this to the assessed fire risk is incomplete among users. Experts are observing increasing numbers of what they consider to be poor fixed firefighting system choices leading to weaker fire safety designs, which is a cause of concern. Therefore the research aim is to verify that these concerns are founded and, that being the case, to develop a decision support system and related supporting resources to further this aspect of fire safety education and enable users to make better informed system selections. Thus, the focus of this research has been to develop a fixed firefighting system selection tool to complement existing legislation, which incorporates logic, rules and fire safety educational resources in a variety of formats to aid the fire safety design process. A variety of largely heuristic techniques have been used to aggregate data to form knowledge to underpin fixed firefighting system selection tool. In this form, the tool has been validated by experts as being a useful resource. The developed tool also provides ample opportunity for useful ongoing future development. The work recognises that cost and benefit are critical in the selection process. Supporting resources have been incorporated into the tool to assist users in evaluating the levels of reliability they might expect from a system in their circumstances. This tool has now been exposed to a wider audience of experts as part of an evaluation process. Findings include: that the tool is an innovative approach to promoting good fire safety designs, the tool efficiently provides useful fire safety education to users and the developed supporting resources which consider firefighting system reliability are helpful. This thesis and reference papers summarise the key stages of this research and tool development. The thesis concludes by outlining the progress achieved by this work and recommendations arising.

Abstract:
Over the past decade, two types of decision aids, i.e., decision support systems (DSS) and expert systems (ES), have been developed along parallel paths, showing some significant differences in their software architectures, capabilities, limitations, and other characteristics. The synergy of DSS and ES, however, has great potential for helping make possible a generalized approach to developing a decision aid that is powerful, intelligent, and friendly. This research establishes a framework for such decision aids in order to determine the elementary components and their interactions. Based on this framework, a generalized intelligent problem solving system (GIPSS) is deveolped as a decision aid generator. A relational model is designed to provide a unified logical view of each type of knowledge including factual data, modeling knowledge, and heuristic rules. In this knowledge model, a currently existing relational DBMS, with some extension, is utilized to manage each type of knowledge. For this purpose a relational resolution inference mechanism has been devised. A prototype GIPSS has been developed based on this framework. Two domain specific decision aids, COCOMO which estimates software development effort and cost, and CAPO which finds optimal process organization, have been implemented by using the GIPSS as a decision aid generator, demonstrating such features as its dynamic modeling capabilities and learning capabilities.

Abstract:
Finding a product with high quality and reasonable price online is a difficult task due to the fuzzy nature of data and queries. In order to handle the fuzzy problem, a new type-2 fuzzy reasoning based decision support system, the Web Shopping Expert for online users is proposed. In the Web Shopping Expert, an interval type-2 fuzzy logic system is used and a fuzzy output can be obtained using the up-low limit technique, which offers an opportunity to directly employ all the rules and methods of the type-1 fuzzy sets onto the type-2 fuzzy sets. To achieve the best performance the fuzzy inference system is optimized by the least square and numerical method. The key advantages of the least square method are the efficient use of samples and the simplicity of the implementation. The Web Shopping Expert based on the interval type-2 fuzzy inference system provides more reasonable conclusions for online users.

Abstract:
The activated sludge system is the most widely used technology for biological wastewater treatment in the world. Its successful performance relies on the correct operation of both the bioreactor and the secondary settler. When settleability deteriorates, the inefficient separation of biomass can affect the quality of the activated sludge effluent, implying on most occasions an impact on the receiving ecosystem. These kind of undesired situations, known as activated sludge solids separation problems, are one of the main causes of inefficiency in activated sludge systems. They include: filamentous bulking, non-filamentous bulking, biological foaming, dispersed growth, pin-point floc and rising sludge. The origin of solids separation problems is (except from rising sludge) an imbalance between the different microbiological communities responsible for the biomass settleability: the floc-forming bacteria and the filamentous bacteria. Due to this microbiological origin, their identification and control is a tough task for plant operators.
Knowledge-Based Decision Support Systems (KBDSS) are a group of tools from the Artificial Intelligence domain characterized by their capability to represent heuristic knowledge and to work with large amounts of data. The main objective of the present thesis is to develop and validate a KBDSS specially designed to support plant operators to handle solids separation problems of microbiological origin occurring in activated sludge systems. In order to achieve this objective, the developed KBDSS must accomplish with the following characteristics: (1) the implementation of the system must be viable and realistic in order to ensure its proper operation; (2) the reasoning process followed by the system must be dynamic and evolutive in order to match the necessities of the domain and (3) the reasoning must be also intelligent,.
First of all, in order to guarantee the feasibility of the system, a thorough study, at a local scale (Catalonia) has contributed to the determination of the most common parameters generally used to diagnose, monitor and control these problems as well as to the detection of the existing limitations that the suggested KBDSS should overcome.
The results obtained from past applications of KBDSS has demonstrated that the main bottleneck in developing KBDSS is the structure of the knowledge base (KB), where all the knowledge acquired from the domain is represented, together with the necessary reasoning processes. In our approach, the additional complexity and the corresponding necessities imposed by the dynamic nature of the domain exacerbate the limitations in developing a feasible system. In this case, a previous conceptualisation phase was considered in which a conceptual design of the system was set up. The Domino Model was suggested as a tool to conceptually design the system.
Finally, in order to efficiently fulfill its main tasks, the last main objective or characteristic that the KBDSS must accomplish is the use of intelligent reasoning. In our approach, an Expert system (based on expert knowledge) and a Case-Based Reasoning System (based on experiential knowledge) have been and integrated as the main intelligent tools to carry out the goals of the KBDSS. In chapter 5 the development of the dynamic ES is presented. In chapter 6, a new temporal approach for classical CBRS is depicted, the Episode-Based Reasoning System (EBRS). Next, in chapter 7 some details of the KBDSS implementation in the G2 environment are presented. After that, in chapter 8 the results obtained during the 11 months of validation are depicted, including the results regarding the accuracy, adequacy, usefulness and usability of the system, which have been validated both experimentally (before the implementation) and as a result of the system's implementation in the Girona WWTP. Finally, in chapter 9, the main conclusions derived from the present thesis are enumerated.

Abstract:
This thesis reports the research efforts conducted in order to develop the Dynamic Response Recovery Tool. The DRRT was developed as a decision support tool under a holistic approach considering both emergency management research and transportation studies. The proposed system was assessed by a series of case studies in order to identify its efficiency and suitability for roading organisations. Knowledge developed from two novel research approaches are comprehensively described throughout the thesis. Initially, we report on the observation of three emergency exercises and two real events in New Zealand. This set of activities indicated the complex and dynamic environment in which emergency management takes place as well as organisational settings and management structures implemented to better respond and recover from disasters events. Additionally, a secondary approach was designed to overcome limitations identified in the observation method. In this context, a game-based scenario simulation was developed and conducted with twelve participants. With a focus in resource deployment decisions during emergencies, the game simulated an earthquake scenario in which participants had to allocate physical resources to fix damage created in a road network. Simulations indicated that Naturalistic Decision-making processes were used to respond to the scenario. Thus, resource allocation followed planning priorities defined previously the simulation, which further considered individual experiences and knowledge. Taking advantage from the findings achieved and knowledge developed by the observations and game simulations, the DRRT was designed using the conceptual background identified in the literature review. The DRRT was conceptualised as a logistics sub-system as part of the broad field of Disaster Management. In particular, the DRRT was geared towards supporting decision-making by providing procedural recommendations and identifying optimum physical deployment strategies. In order to assess the proposed system, an Information Technology application was built according to the DRRT’s specifications. A series of eleven individual and three group simulations was performed in order to assess the DRRT. Data collected through the application indicated that the DRRT enhanced decision-making during extreme events. In specific, case study participants using the system at greater levels achieved better decision-making accuracy than those disregarding completely or partially the system. Case studies also indicated that emergency management knowledge was represented by the application and its logistics model provided participants with vital information to optimise resource allocation.

Abstract:
Decision support systems are used in uncertainty scenarios; normally a decision is choose using similar problems actions results. Decision support systems could incorporate specific knowledge; such systems are called expert systems. The specific knowledge is used for inference about the problem scenario. This work objective is the evaluation and modeling of decision support systems, we analyzed two distinct approaches for the same problem, one for detection, another for management. The management approach uses Bayesian networks for modeling the specific knowledge and the inference engine. The variables choice, the dependences relationship and the conditional probabilities were extracted from the scientific literature. The detection approach used images and feature extraction to perform a clustering and compare the output labels with a specialist classification. One application of expert systems is clinical, supporting diseases detection, diagnosis and treatment. Dental caries is a generalized problem that affects major part of the population, few systems exists for support the caries diagnostic process, the major part is deterministic, focusing only the detection problem. The caries management system developed here was shown to two odontology professionals, and they opinion encourage such approach to be applied in fields like odontology education and basic health. Beyond this, we used well-established cases to analyze the network output suggestions, the result obtained was coherent with the real decision making scenario. The caries detection approach resulted in a high accuracy, 96.88%, showing that methodology is promising. Besides the contribution for dental informatics field, the results obtained here shows that the extraction of the network structure from the literature could be used in problems similar with caries diagnoses. The project next steps are to analyze some points of systems modeling and Bayesian networks, like scalability and validation tests, both quantitative and qualitative, and including the development of computational effectives methods for the use of Monte Carlo methodology

Abstract: From the middle of the 20th century experts on genetics and producers had intensified the work to improve dairy production. Advances have appeared, however these results have not been followed by the improvement of cows legs and hooves. The intensification of herd¿s needs have been carried through housing modifications aiming at to adjust them as well as to become them more productive, leading into a larger concentration of animals per floor area, resulting in a higher volume of dejects, higher humidity, less hygiene, and difficulties of handling. In order to solve these problems a process of waterproofing for these constructions floors was started in order to reduce the humidity and to make easier the hygiene process. This are reinforced whith the free-stall housing systems constructions, where the dairy cows often stay most of the time standing on the concrete floor. This scenario results in the sprouting of hoof pathologies. This research considered the development of a computational system for preventive diagnosis of confined dairy cattle hoof pathologies in free-stall housing, for estimating the presence of diffuse aseptic pododermatitis, also known as laminitis, and has as target the public such as: veterinarians, producers, handlers, consultants, ration manufacturers, breeding lodging¿s designers and constructors. Clinical diagnosis of the laminitis is only possible by observing faulty locomotion; however when the symptoms are apparent, the pathology is already in an advanced stage demanding the immediate intervention of a veterinarian, incurring into economic losses and animal welfare restrains. A correlation with the nutritional factors of feed intake, the presence of more abrasive pavements, climatic changes and handling conditions has allowed the conversion of these data into linguistic terms, due to its advantages of using subjective concepts that provides a high degree certainty, and the application of Fuzzy Logic for the development of a inference algorithm based on a rule database to be used as the decision support process. The results showed that the expert system generates information of possible increase or decrease in the laminitis development possibilities and also supplies recommendations for producers¿ actions by making modifications in parameters regarding environmental conditions, feeding and handling management. The technology generated contributes for the reduction of the economic losses and leads to improvement in dairy cattle welfare

Abstract:
An expert system for the estimation of a prognosis was developed and evaluated which uses a new kind of valuation. Brainstem gliomas in the childhood were chosen as an example of a disease. HISTAGLI consists of an information component which gives an overview about the disease, a database in which all patient data is presented as text and graphics, and a prognosis creation component which creates a prognosis for newly inserted patients in six categories under consideration of different therapy pattern and explains the way towards the estimation of the prognosis. The knowledge base of the prognosis creation component was made out of the clinical and histopathological data of 23 children with brainstem gliomas halfautomaticly valued by an expert. There was a high correlation of 78,26% (with one category toleranz 86,96% ) accordance with the real prognosis of the patients. This result is only restricted transferable to new patients because of the number of cases which is too small for statistical evidence. Higher precision is expected with appropriate maintenance and an increasing number of cases.

Abstract:
This dissertation discusses three problems from different areas of medical research and their machine learning solutions. Each solution is a distinct type of decision support system. They show three common properties: personalized healthcare decision support, reduction of the use of medical resources, and improvement of outcomes. The first decision support system assists individual hospital selection. This system can help a user make the best decision in terms of the combination of mortality, complication, and travel distance. Both machine learning and optimization techniques are utilized in this type of decision support system. Machine learning methods, such as Support Vector Machines, learn a decision function. Next, the function is transformed into an objective function and then optimization methods are used to find the values of decision variables to reach the desired outcome with the most confidence. The second decision support system assists diagnostic decisions in a sequential decision-making setting by finding the most promising tests and suggesting a diagnosis. The system can speed up the diagnostic process, reduce overuse of medical tests, save costs, and improve the accuracy of diagnosis. In this study, the system finds the test most likely to confirm a diagnosis based on the pre-test probability computed from the patient's information including symptoms and the results of previous tests. If the patient's disease post-test probability is higher than the treatment threshold, a diagnostic decision will be made, and vice versa. Otherwise, the patient needs more tests to help make a decision. The system will then recommend the next optimal test and repeat the same process. The third decision support system recommends the best lifestyle changes for an individual to lower the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). As in the hospital recommendation system, machine learning and optimization are combined to capture the relationship between lifestyle and CVD, and then generate recommendations based on individual factors including preference and physical condition. The results demonstrate several recommendation strategies: a whole plan of lifestyle changes, a package of n lifestyle changes, and the compensatory plan (the plan that compensates for unwanted lifestyle changes or real-world limitations).

Keith, Robert Duncan Falconer. "Intelligent fetal monitoring and decision support in the management of labour." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 1993. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/339.

Full text
Abstract:
The condition of the fetus during labour is inferred from the continuous plot of fetal heart rate and uterine contractions (cardiotocogram, CTG). This can be _ difficult to interpret which results in both unnecessary intervention and a failure to intervene when necessary causing potentially preventable neurological damage and mortality. Conventional computing approaches have not been successful in addressing these problems. This is perhaps because the correct interpretation of fetal condition requires physiological knowledge, considerable practical experience and knowledge of the specific patient. The work described in this thesis is concerned with the investigation of artificial intelligence techniques to assist in the interpretation of fetal condition and advise on labour management. A fundamental investigation examined the performance of five types of scalp electrodes for obtaining the fetal electrocardiogram (ECG), from which heart rate is derived, and examined the factors which hamper fetal ECG data acquisition. New methods were developed to classify the important features from the CTG and included an investigation using neural networks. Other CTG features were classified using novel numerical algorithms developed closely with experts. An expert system, guided by a database of rules obtained from experts, was used to process and interpret changes in the CTG features by taking account of patient specific information. This hybrid approach was adopted to improve performance and reliability. After two internal evaluations had found the system obtained a performance comparable with local experts, an extensive external validation was undertaken. This study involved 17 experts from 16 leading centres within the UK. Each expert and the system reviewed 50 cases twice, at least one month apart which contained those considered most difficult to interpret selected from a database of 2400 high risk labours. A novel method was developed to present all the relevant clinical information in a way which approximated the clinical situation. The reviewers scored each 15 minutes of recording according to the concern they had for the fetus and the management they considered appropriate. In this respect, this is the first reported study to examine the performance of expert obstetricians in the management of labour. A new method was derived to measure the agreement between the scores obtained and is applicable to other areas where it is required to measure the similarity between time related sequences. This study found that the experts agreed well and were consistent in their management of the cases. The system was indistinguishable from the experts, except it was more consistent, even when used by an engineer with little knowledge of labour management. This study has shown that expertise in fetal monitoring is achievable in which case the current evidence suggests that this is not being adequately transferred to clinicians. The challenge remains to formulate a method to effectively transfer knowledge to the labour ward and thereby address the real and practical problems which face fetal monitoring today. This study demonstrates that intelligent systems could provide the vehicle to achieve this. I dedicate this work to the memory of my father, Bradley Kenneth Keith with a hope that he always believed it possible. I know he would have had some interesting comments to make and I sadly miss the opportunity of discussing them with him. I also dedicate this work to my mother for always being there, and to my wife Michelle for her unwavering support, patience and most of all her encouragement throughout this work.

International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 26-29, 1992 / Town and Country Hotel and Convention Center, San Diego, California
ASW-II (Advanced Satellite Workstation, Version II) has been developed and delivered as an operational prototype in support of the Ultra High Frequency (UHF) Follow-On satellite. It provides unified and coordinated real time reception and storage of satellite telemetry, display of both real time and stored telemetry, expert-system analysis of spacecraft status, and an information navigator system that stores and presents information about the spacecraft. The architecture is modular and reconfigurable, and it provides support for multiple analyst workstations. There are several unusual aspects of the design. The entire telemetry history of the satellite is regarded as a continuum by the user, with ASW-II automatically tracking and displaying contact periods. A "streams" mechanism organizes the telemetry in such a way that the user can interactively define new derived parameters and have them presented graphically. Both real time and archived data can be displayed simultaneously. The user has very flexible controls for all display interfaces using mouse and window technologies.

Abstract:
Australian agriculture is one area in which a number of intelligent support systems have been developed. It appears, however, that comparatively few of these systems are widely used or have the impact the developers might have wished. In this study a possible explanation for this state of affairs was investigated. The development process for 66 systems was examined. Particular attention was paid to the nature of user involvement, if any, during development and the relationship to system success. The issue is not only whether there was user involvement but rather the nature of the involvement, that is, the degree of influence users had during development. The patterns identified in the analysis suggest user influence is an important contributor to the success of a system. These results have theoretical significance in that they add to knowledge of the role of the user in the development of intelligent support systems. The study has drawn together work from three areas: Rogers’ diffusion theory, the technology acceptance model, and theories relating to user involvement in the development of information systems. Most prior research in the information systems area has investigated one or two of the above three areas in any one study. The study synthesizes this knowledge through applying it to the field of intelligent support systems in Australian agriculture. The results have considerable practical significance, as apparently developers of intelligent support systems in Australian agriculture do not recognize the importance of user participation, and continue to develop systems with less than optimum impact.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Effective resource management requires tools and decision aides to help determine users' needs and appropriate assignment. The goal of this research was to design, implement, and test technological tools that, even in a dynamic environment, effectively support the matching of users and resources. The context of the investigation is the Information Center, the structure used to manage and control the computing resources demanded by end users. The major contributions of the research lie in two areas: (1) the development and use of a knowledge acquisition called Resource Attribute Charts (RAC), which allow for the structured definition of the resources managed by the IC, and (2) the design, implementation, validation, and verification of the transportability of Information Center Expert, a system that supports the activities of the IC personnel. Prototyping, the system development methodology commonly used in software engineering, was used to design the general architecture of the knowledge acquisition tools, the knowledge maintenance tool, and the expert system itself. The knowledge acquisition tools, RAC, were used to build the knowledge base of ICE (Information Center Expert). ICE was installed at two corporate sites, its software recommendations were validated, and its transportability from one location to another was verified experimentally. The viability of a rule-based consultation system as a mechanism for bringing together knowledge about users, problems, and resources for the purpose of effective resource management was demonstrated.

Abstract:
It has been suggested 'expert systems' might have a significant role in the future through enabling many more people to access human experts. It is, therefore, important to understand how potential users interact with these computer systems. This study investigates the effect of extension agents' attitudes towards the features and use of an example expert system for rice disease diagnosis and management(POSOP). It also considers the effect of extension agents' personality traits and intelligence on their attitudes towards its use, and the agents' perception of control over using it. Answers to these questions lead to developing better systems and to increasing their adoption. Using structural equation modelling, two models - the extension agents' perceived usefulness of POSOP, and their attitude towards the use of POSOP, were developed (Models ATU and ATP). Two of POSOP's features (its value as a decision support tool, and its user interface), two personality traits (Openness (0) and Extraversion (E)), and the agents' intelligence, proved to be significant, and were evaluated. The agents' attitude towards POSOP's value had a substantial impact on their perceived usefulness and their attitude towards using it, and thus their intention to use POSOP. Their attitude towards POSOP's user interface also had an impact on their attitude towards its perceived usefulness, but had no impact on their attitude towards using it. However, the user interface did contribute to its value. In Model ATU, neither Openness (0) nor Extraversion (E) had an impact on the agents' perceived usefulness indicating POSOP was considered useful regardless of the agents' personality background. However, Extraversion (E) had a negative impact on their intention to use POSOP in Model ATP indicating that 'introverted' agents had a clear intention to use POSOP relative to the 'extroverted' agents. Extension agents' intelligence, in terms of their GPA, had neither an impact on their attitude, nor their subjective norm (expectation of 'others' beliefs), to the use of POSOP. It also had no association with any of the variables in both models. Both models explain and predict that it is likely that the agents will use POSOP. However, the availability of computers, particularly their capacity, are likely to impede its use. Although the agents believed using POSOP would not be difficult, they still believed training would be beneficial. To be a useful decision support tool, the expert system's value and user interface as well as its usefulness and ease of use, are all crucially important to the preliminary acceptance of a system. Most importantly, the users' problems and needs should be assessed and taken into account as a first priority in developing an expert system. Furthermore, the users should be involved in the system development. The results emphasise that the use of an expert system is not only determined by the system's value and its user interface, but also the agents' perceived usefulness, and their attitude towards using it. In addition, the agents' perception of control over using it is also a significant factor. The results suggested improvements to the system's value and its user interface would increase its potential use, and also providing suitable computers, coupled with training, would encourage its use.

Shesham, Sriharsha. "Integrating Expert System and Geographic Information System for Spatial Decision Making." TopSCHOLAR®, 2012. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/1216.

Abstract:
Spatial decision making is a process of providing an effective solution for a problem that encompasses semi-structured spatial data. It is a challenging task which involves various factors to consider. For example, in order to build a new industry, an appropriate site must be selected for which several factors have to be taken into consideration. Some of the factors, which can affect the decision in this particular case, are air pollution, noise pollution, and distance from living areas, which makes the decision difficult. The geographic information systems (GIS) and the expert systems (ES) have many advantages in solving problems in their prospective areas. Integrating these two systems will benefit in solving spatial decision making problems. In the past, many researchers have proposed integrating systems which extracts the data from the GIS and saves it in the database for decision making. Most of the frameworks which have been developed were system dependent and are not properly structured. So it is difficult to search the data. This thesis proposes a framework which extracts the GIS data and processes it with the help of ES decision making capabilities to solve the spatial decision making problem. This framework is named GeoFilter. This research classifies various types of mechanisms that can be used to integrate these two systems.

Abstract:
The savage essence and nature of sports means those who work on it hunt for the win. The sport enterprise is undergoing a gigantic digital transformation focused on imaging, real time and data analysis employed in the competitions. Conventional process methods in sports management such as fitness and health establishments, training, growth and match or game realisation are all being revolutionized by the sport digitization. In team sports it is well known that is needful an enough and simple digital methodology to organize and construct a feasible strategy. Digitization in sports is perpetually evolving and requires pervasive challenges. The sports and athletics digitization success is based on what is being done with collection of more data. Competitive advantages go to those who produce powerful operations using the data and acting on it in real time. The potential impact of these sport features in sport team operations is powerful. Data does not ride all decisions, but it empowers knowledgeable decisions. In these world circumstances, our vision with this system was born from a dream helping soccer sport management systems embrace and improve its contest success. Our perspective problem is how a decision support system for soccer coaches helps them to take enhancement decisions better. To face this problem we have created a soccer coach decision support system. This system is organised in two joined components; the first simulates the prediction of the soccer match winner through a data driven neural network. This component output activates the second to operate the logic rules learning and provides the stats, analysis, decision making and additionally plans improvements like drills and training procedures. This helps on the preparation towards upcoming matches as well as being aligned with their style and playing concepts. Future scalability and development, will analyse the mental and moral features of the teams by virtue of their athlete’s behavior changes.
