Abstract:
Network Convergence or Divergence, what is it, and which are the most likely developments? Today, a much talked about area of telecommunications is the move toward the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), and with it the introduction of IP-based communication in both Public Land Mobile Networks and Public Switched Telephony Networks. This thesis attempts to show whether these two networks will converge with each other and with the Internet in the future - based upon the existence of a few important prerequisites in terms of standards and protocols, whilst divergence in the networks could result if technical and economical obstacles are difficult to circumvent or to exclude from future networks. The major drivers for convergence include the existence of standards for packet-based transmission over a wide variety of underlying networks, the existence of services that make use of these underlying networking protocols, and ultimately also the existence of devices that can use the new features of a converged network architecture. The focus is on the impact convergence services or offerings may have on handsets; specifically which protocols need to be supported, as well as those hardware and software requirements that need to be catered for to enable convergence in the handset sector. The thesis concludes with a summary of the most important factors for convergence in future mobile handsets.

Abstract:
With an increased amount of connected devices and the recent surge of artificial intelligence, the two technologies need more attention to fully bloom as a useful tool for creating new and exciting products. As machine learning traditionally is implemented on computers and online servers this thesis explores the possibility to extend machine learning to an embedded environment. This evaluation of existing machine learning in embedded systems with limited processing capa-bilities has been carried out in the specific context of an application involving classification of basic human movements. Previous research and implementations indicate that it is possible with some limitations, this thesis aims to answer which hardware limitation is affecting clas-sification and what classification accuracy the system can reach on an embedded device. The tests included human motion data from an existing dataset and included four different machine learning algorithms on three devices. Support Vector Machine (SVM) are found to be performing best com-pared to CART, Random Forest and AdaBoost. It reached a classification accuracy of 84,69% between six different included motions with a clas-sification time of 16,88 ms per classification on a Cortex M4 processor. This is the same classification accuracy as the one obtained on the host computer with more computational capabilities. Other hardware and machine learning algorithm combinations had a slight decrease in clas-sification accuracy and an increase in classification time. Conclusions could be drawn that memory on the embedded device affect which al-gorithms could be run and the complexity of data that can be extracted in form of features. Processing speed is mostly affecting classification time. Additionally the performance of the machine learning system is connected to the type of data that is to be observed, which means that the performance of different setups differ depending on the use case.

Abstract:
This research studies the security challenges in IoT devices. At first, security challenges have been described and then specifically the security of communication protocols in the IoT has been addressed. Finally, among different communication protocols, ZigBee and Z-Wave protocols have been chosen for this study. The criterion for choosing these two protocols is the level of security they provide for IoT devices to protect them against unauthorized access and hacking. Security, frequency, power consumption and data rate are the characteristics that have been discussed in the review of these two protocols. In the end, a comparison of the various features of these two protocols clarified that the security of IoT devices in each of these protocols depends on the type of the IoT device, the required range and other requirements, however, in most cases the ZigBee protocol showed more security than Z-Wave.

Bookwala, Avinash Turab. "Combined map personalisation algorithm for delivering preferred spatial features in a map to everyday mobile device users." AUT University, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10292/920.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis, we present an innovative and novel approach to personalise maps/geo-spatial services for mobile users. With the proposed map personalisation approach, only relevant data will be extracted from detailed maps/geo-spatial services on the fly, based on a user’s current location, preferences and requirements. This would result in dramatic improvements in the legibility of maps on mobile device screens, as well as significant reductions in the amount of data being transmitted; which, in turn, would reduce the download time and cost of transferring the required geo-spatial data across mobile networks. Furthermore, the proposed map personalisation approach has been implemented into a working system, based on a four-tier client server architecture, wherein fully detailed maps/services are stored on the server, and upon a user’s request personalised maps/services, extracted from the fully detailed maps/services based on the user’s current location, preferences, are sent to the user’s mobile device through mobile networks. By using open and standard system development tools, our system is open to everyday mobile devices rather than smart phones and Personal Digital Assistants (PDA) only, as is prevalent in most current map personalisation systems. The proposed map personalisation approach combines content-based information filtering and collaborative information filtering techniques into an algorithmic solution, wherein content-based information filtering is used for regular users having a user profile stored on the system, and collaborative information filtering is used for new/occasional users having no user profile stored on the system. Maps/geo-spatial services are personalised for regular users by analysing the user’s spatial feature preferences automatically collected and stored in their user profile from previous usages, whereas, map personalisation for new/occasional users is achieved through analysing the spatial feature preferences of like-minded users in the system in order to make an inference for the target user. Furthermore, with the use of association rule mining, an advanced inference technique, the spatial features retrieved for new/occasional users through collaborative filtering can be attained. The selection of spatial features through association rule mining is achieved by finding interesting and similar patterns in the spatial features most commonly retrieved by different user groups, based on their past transactions or usage sessions with the system.

The study of supra-segmental features has been an important matter for linguistic studies and the phonology area where intonation and stress patterns are involved in the understanding of connected speech during conversations. Historically, the interaction between illocutionary forces and locutionary forces has been analyzed in studies regarding humor, more specifically sarcasm and irony, however, the aim of this study is focused on indirect relations between locution and illocution in everyday speech. The aim of this study is to find the means by which illocutionary force is understood, and to disclose any intonation pattern in the relation between locutionary and illocutionary forces. An analysis of 4 episodes of the BBC’s programme Hard Talk was performed in order to obtain data of the use of locutionary and illocutionary forces by the host of the show, in a semi-structured interview where diverse guests were asked for specific topics regarding their regular activities and opinions. The presence of perlocutionary force could be analyzed by means of the interviewee’s responses during the communicative interaction of the subjects studied.

This thesis proposes IoTtalk that provides convenient access to cyber and physical devices through the web technology. In this way, the IoT applications can be accessed anywhere in the world through any computing device with a display and a browser without installing any mobile app. IoTtalk unifies the concepts of automatic creation of ‘‘mirror device features’’ (simulated counterpart) and talkPal device features, which are nicely demonstrated through several applications. The core application of IoTtalk is SmartPhoneTalk that allows other applications to be accessed by users through their smartphones without installing any mobile apps. We describe four IoTtalk applications, including MusicTalk, PingPongTalk, SkeletonTalk and MorSocket to demonstrate cyber and physical interaction with SmartPhoneTalk. After the IoT devices of these applications have been developed and are accommodated in IoTtalk, the users can use the IoTtalk GUI to connect them with various combinations for innovative applications without extra programming effort.

Abstract:
Mobile devices have advanced tremendously during the last ten years and have changed our daily life in various ways. Secure pairing of mobile devices has become a significant issue considering the huge quantity of active mobile device connections and mobile traffic. However, current commonly used file sharing mobile applications rely on servers completely that are always targeted by attackers. In this thesis work, an innovative mechanism is proposed to generate symmetric keys on both mobile devices independently from a shared movement in arbitrary pattern, which means no server needs to be involved and no data exchange needed. A secret wireless-communication channel can then be established with a particular network strategy.

Geographic information makes our lives easier through devices such as GPS or drones. Many technical improvements are coming up every day, but the interaction human-computer is sometimes limited. In particular, in the process of moving from the digital world to reality, how people understand this information. In this paper, I investigated what are the different features and relations of features that people include in sketch maps when they are asked to give route directions and what are the reasons for these differences. The research is based on people´s spatial knowledge using data collected among users sketch maps and spatial strategies tests. Our results show that there are differences in the features drawn and that they are related mostly due to environmental reasons. Not relevant differences are found in the spatial relation of features. From the results, it is extracted valuable information that can benefit future researchers and the creation of new navigation devices.

Abstract:
Internship Report presented as the partial requirement for obtaining a Master's degree in Data Science and Advanced Analytics
The telecommunication service providers seek an accurate insight into the devices that are connected within a home network, in order to provide a better in-home experience. In this way, the goal of the internship was to develop a machine learning model for fingerprinting of Amazon devices. This can be translated to a timeseries binary classification problem and assumes an exploration background of understanding the employment of bytes received by the router over time as an indicator of the internet usage to detect the Amazon devices. A feature-based analysis was conducted to make it possible to apply the most common and simple classifiers, which is relevant within a company context. The available data presented some challenges, namely a high imbalance and number of missing values. For this, it was studied several combinations of different techniques to increase the importance of the minority class and to impute the unknown values. In addition, multiple models were trained, whose results were evaluated and compared. The achieved performance of the best model was not considered satisfactory to correctly identify the Amazon devices, which lead to the conclusion that other approaches, algorithms and/or variable(s) need to be considered in a future iteration. The project contributed to a better understanding of the path to take on the identification of the devices and introduced new approaches and reasoning when dealing with similar data as the timeseries in analysis.

"Exploring the Use of Cohesive Devices Among Second-year through Fourth-year Learners of Chinese." Master's thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.17888.

Full text
Abstract:
abstract: Many researchers have pointed out that sentence complexity plays an important role in language maturity. Using cohesive devices is a critical method to composing complicated sentences. Several grammatical researchers give cohesive devices different definitions and categories in the perspective of pure linguistics, yet little is known about the Chinese learners' acquisition situations of cohesive devices in the field of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (TCFL). Combined with these definitions and pedagogical theories, the acquisition situations of four grammatical features of cohesive devices and eleven logical relations are discussed in this thesis. This thesis expects that through discovering different features of cohesive devices among different student levels, educators of Chinese will gain a more comprehensive understanding of the acquisition orders and features of conjunctive devices. In this study, I examine the teaching orders of cohesive devices in selected textbooks from first-year Chinese through fourth-year Chinese. Three groups of students were required to complete two essays based on the same topics and prompts. Twenty-eight valid writing samples are examined in total, including ten writing samples from fourth-year students, another ten from third-year students, and eight from second-year students. The results show that there are no obvious differences among the three levels of students in their use of certain grammatical features and logical relations of cohesive devices. Students in these three levels have difficulty understanding how to connect paragraphs together fluently and accurately in their compositions. Pedagogical implications include some suggestions about designing instructional writing assignments in order to give more clearly pedagogical instructions for teaching cohesive devices. In addition, comprehensible directions that explain which logical relations should be taught every academic year are proposed.

Figueiredo, Joana Sofia Campos. "Assistive locomotion strategies for active lower limb devices." Master's thesis, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1822/39613.

Abstract:
In order to actively aid or restore legged locomotion to individuals suffering from muscular impairments, weakness or neurologic injury, rehabilitation is recommended as a more appropriate way to achieve the ultimate goal of a continuous ambulatory monitoring. Also, the assistance with wearable robots (WRs) during daily living activities provides a more intensive and purposeful targeted therapeutic training, and also reduces the treatment cost and the number of health care personnel. Thus, it is crucial the development of locomotion strategies that recognize in real-time the locomotion mode of human-robot interaction in overground daily living activities. Thus, this thesis intends to develop two locomotion strategies which will be integrated in high level control of exoskeleton H2 (Exo-H2), the WR developed under the scope of BioMot project. The first locomotion strategy proposed and validated addresses online detection of events and gait phases uniquely through information from embedded sensors. This knowledge will allow determining in real-time the biomechanical parameters of assisted walking, and consequently to assess the progress of rehabilitation process by means of WR. The solution validation in different locomotion conditions (assisted walking by WR, walking of humanoid robot and walking of healthy subject) shows up that the proposed solution led to a robust and general tool for gait detection, which is also capable to detect more events and gait phases comparatively to the works presented in literature. Locomotion mode recognition is the second locomotion strategy developed in this thesis, which allows the recognition of different locomotion modes. Based on an exhaustive state of the art survey, a more robust and accurate procedure that leads to a more robust and accurate tool was delineated. According to the results achieved for offline scenario it was verified that the performance of the locomotion strategy increases by using different types of biomechanical parameters, which should be previously selected by means of multivariate statistic methods. Both binary and multiclass classification were addressed through support vector machine (SVM). The implementation of these methods led to a powerful and accurate tool of offline recognition of locomotion modes. Additionally, a strategy for online recognition was proposed. Further work will consist on the application of these locomotion strategies in real-time environment of gait rehabilitation.

Abstract:
A wide variety of aspects of Machaka's poetry was treated. His poetry which is meaningful when viewed against his traditional culture brings inspiration and a formal mode of literary expression. Death was never accepted by the Tlokwa as an end to life. Machaka has succeeded in blending the ancestral worship with Christian faith. He has used euphemism to modify pain. He makes use of imagery to execute cruelty and bluntness of death. Machaka's protest poetry echoes the same protest of those of other protesters. These refer to the injustice the Blacks experienced from the white regime prior to independence. From his love poems, it is noticed that Machaka is a great lover. When he is in love, he becomes a slave. Machaka uses traditional and modem praise poetry techniques. This made him manage to produce poetry which made a definite impact on Northern Sotho literature and contributed to its depth
