McDonagh, D. C. "Empathic design : emerging design research methodologies." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2006. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/7785.

Full text
Abstract:
A new relationship between product designers and the users of products is emerging. It is now being realised that users have complex supra-functional needs, which include the emotional, spiritual, social, tribal aspects of the relationship between particular products and the user/consumer'. Users seek more than mere functionality. In order to meet these needs designers need to actively develop research methodologies that are specifically aimed at collecting design relevant data which includes the often difficult to grasp elements of the supra-functional. The comfort zone for many designers involves designing products for themselves (or people like themselves) when intuition and insight can be closely matched. In modern, international markets and with increasingly demanding consumers, such approaches are inadequate. However, it is possible for designers to become directly immersed in researching users' needs and experiences rather than rely on third party research which, whilst potentially valuable, does not enable the same intimacy and potential for growth of experience for the designer. This approach is termed empathic design research. It seeks to broaden designers' 'comfort zone' by expanding the number of people they can empathise with, broadening their 'empathic horizon'. This thesis presents a body of published work by the author that explores the position of design research in relation to the changing role of Industrial/Product designers. The thesis consists of an introductory paper that pulls together the various strands in the published work. Following this a set of ten journal papers, one refereed conference paper and three book chapters is presented. The work as a whole defines a number of research approaches that designers can employ to elicit and understand users' suprafunctional needs. The papers establish the evolving context of product design and the growing interest in User-centred Design in its various forms. They examine research approaches that extend beyond user observation, involvement and draw the designer into a more empathic contact with users to illuminate functional and supra-functional requirements. Designers must learn to 'get under the skin' of the user; to develop empathy with users from population groups very different from their own in terms of culture, age and ability. This empathic intimacy can result in data generation and insight with this evaluation becoming an integral part of the designing process. The changing role of the product designer, as well as the nature of the design research process, frames the argument for adopting an empathic design research model. Finally, the author explores the implications of this important paradigm shift for design education.

Mcguire-Adams, Tricia. "Anishinaabeg Women's Wellbeing: Decolonization through Physical Activity." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/37366.

Full text
Abstract:
Settler colonialism has detrimental effects on the health and wellbeing of Indigenous peoples, as seen, for example, in the disproportionately high rates of chronic diseases experienced among Indigenous peoples. Indigenous peoples in Canada experience higher levels of ill health related to obesity, diabetes, and other chronic conditions than non-Indigenous people. Indigenous women experience greater incidents of chronic disease than men and are thus particularly vulnerable to ill health. Current research has focussed on documenting the health disparities between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. While insightful, health disparity research reproduces settler colonial discourses of erasure and provides no meaningful or lasting solutions for addressing these disparities, thus demonstrating the need for Indigenous-led thinking regarding potential solutions. Therefore, the guiding research question for my dissertation was, “Can physical activity that encompasses a decolonization approach be a catalyst for regenerative wellbeing for Anishinaabeg women?” Using Indigenous feminist theory that is informed by Anishinaabeg gikendaasowin, I looked to the dibaajimowinan of Anishinaabeg women, Elders, and urban Indigenous women, which occurred in three stages of research and culminated in five publishable papers. In the first stage of research, I interviewed seven Anishinaabekweg who are exemplars of decolonized physical activity. In the second stage of research, I held a sharing circle with eight Elders from Naicatchewenin in Treaty #3 territory. In the last stage of research, I implemented Wiisokotaatiwin with 12 urban Indigenous women with the Odawa Native Friendship Centre, my community partner. The results of my research revealed that wellbeing for Indigenous women can be improved through decolonized physical activity, remembering Anishinaabeg stories, and building community in urban spaces. More specifically, these activities are important resistance tools that can lead to meaningful ways of addressing embodied settler colonialism and can also make strong contributions to Indigenous health research. Overall, my research showcased how Anishinaabeg gikendaasowin can be used as a foundation to improve Indigenous women’s health and wellbeing.

Achieng-Evensen, Charlotte. "Young, Urban, Professional, and Kenyan?: Conversations Surrounding Tribal Identity and Nationhood." Chapman University Digital Commons, 2016. http://digitalcommons.chapman.edu/ces_dissertations/9.

Full text
Abstract:
By asking the question “How do young, urban, professional Kenyans make connections between tribal identity, colonialism, and the lived experience of nationhood?,” the researcher engages with eight participants in exploring their relationships with their tribal groups. From this juncture the researcher, through a co-constructed process with participants, interrogates the idea of nationhood by querying their interpretations of the concepts of power and resistance within their multi-ethnic societies. The utility of KuPiga Hadithi as a cultural responsive methodology for data collection along with poetic analysis as part of the qualitative tools of examination allowed the researcher to identify five emergent and iterative themes: (1) colonial wounds, (2) power inequities, (3) tensions, (4) intersection, and (5) hope. Participant discussion of these themes suggests an impenetrable link between tribal identity and nationhood. Schooling, as first a colonial and then national construct, works to mediate that link. Therefore, there is the need for a re-conceptualization of the term ‘nation’ in the post-Independence era.

Heynes, Wynford Gustav. "Selection of multicriteria decision making methodologies in scenario based planning." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/14722.

Full text
Abstract:
Bibliography: leaves 131-136.
This dissertation investigates the application of Multicriteria Decision Making (MCDM) methodologies to the area of scenario based policy planning. We examine how the tools of MCDM can be used to develop a Decision Support System (DSS) that would allow management or policy planners to resolve conflicting goals and interests. Ideally, the resolution would be obtained by the various decision makers (DMs) in such a manner, that it satisfies all the relevant interest groupings at a maximum level of achievement for all concerned. This is not always possible and compromises need to be made that are fair and equitable to all the relevant interests. Stewart et al. (1993), in a report entitled: "Scenario Based Multicriteria Policy Planning for Water Management in South Africa", develop the principles of a procedure for implementing scenario based multicriteria policy planning. Their iterative procedure is illustrated in figure 2.1, chapter 2, of this paper. In this dissertation, we refine certain parts of this procedure and the two areas in particular that we have looked at are: (1) filtering a large set of policy scenarios (Background Set), that could be a continuum, to form a smaller set (Foreground Set), and (2) further reducing the smaller set to form a solution set of policy scenarios. (The generic terms "Background Set" and "Foreground Set" are defined in section 2.1 of chapter 2.) The main objectives of this study were therefore mainly twofold and are as follows: (1) to determine what MCDM methods are relevant to natural resources management (using water as a case study), and (2) to investigate how these methods need to be adopted for use in an interactive DSS. We address the first objective by surveying the literature in an attempt to identify potential MCDM approaches that are suitable to (i) reduce a large set of alternatives, analogous to the Background Set, to a more manageable smaller set, analogous to the Foreground Set of alternatives, and (ii) refine this Foreground Set in order to present the DMs with a solution set of alternatives from which University of Cape Town they will make their final selection. The literature has until now not dealt explicitly with these two issues and we had to adapt certain MCDM approaches, many of which have been developed in a linear programming context, to suit our purposes.

Abstract:
Microscopy based phenotypic analysis is a powerful technique for investigating biological mechanisms and molecular signalling networks. For effective analysis high throughput approaches are required to estimate the inherent variability of biological systems. Automated image analysis is essential for processing the large volumes of data involved in the assays. Image segmentation is a critical part of the image analysis but obtaining accurate and reliable automated segmentation remains a challenge. hi my research 1 have worked to address the problem of estimating the foreground of a fluorescent nucleus marker image by identifying relationships between clusters of pixels. This technique is proven to be more effective at identifying the image foregrounc than the standard approach of classifying pixels based upon intensity thresholds.

Abstract:
The aim of this PhD thesis was to produce research that could inform and benefit clinical practice by exploring the application of basic science and clinical research methodologies to disorders in obstetrics and gynaecology. Chapter 1’s investigation of endometriosis is the first to 1) report detailed genetic mapping of endometriosis-associated ovarian cancer, 2) report the existence of micro-LOH (loss of heterozygosity) in ovarian endometriosis through a SNP 100K DNA array. Chapter 2 explores the efficacy of interventions to treat menstrual abnormalities using clinical cohort studies. Furthermore, Chapter 2 highlights how negligence in female sterilization failure may be mathematically (Bayesian) modelled. Chapter 3 explores the value of systematic reviews for preventing preterm delivery and use of LNG-IUS (Mirena coil). The clinical guidelines published in Chapter 4 include: vaginal birth after previous caesarean, ectopic pregnancy, safe laparoscopic entry and minimising risk of sterilisation failure. The thesis concludes (Chapter 5) by suggesting strategies to augment the research methodological approaches evaluated in this thesis in order fulfill the aim of benefitting clinical practice. Work included in this PhD thesis has been orally presented at international conferences, published in peer-reviewed journals, and published as a national clinical guideline by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, UK (RCOG).

Abstract:
Many tools exist to assist law enforcement agencies in mitigating criminal activity. For centuries, academics used statistics in the study of crime and criminals, and more recently, police departments make use of spatial statistics and geographic information systems in that pursuit. Clustering and hot spot methods of analysis are popular in this application for their relative simplicity of interpretation and ease of process. With recent advancements in geospatial technology, it is easier than ever to publicly share data through visual communication tools like web applications and dashboards. Sharing data and results of analyses boosts transparency and the public image of police agencies, an image important to maintaining public trust in law enforcement and active participation in community safety.

Full text
Abstract:
Accounting for complexity is now a feature of health interventions research, but it is unclear how this might best be accomplished. As the number of methodologies to account for complexity expands, developing a coherent approach to intervention research has become more urgent and yet more difficult. This thesis aimed to address this challenge by examining methodologies used to design and evaluate complex interventions in global health. Four areas considered central to complex interventions research were explored – intervention design, evaluation of outcomes, assessment of causal mechanisms, and evaluation of context. In each of these areas, a different mixed method, statistical, or qualitative methodological approach was employed following available guidance. Data were drawn from the design and evaluation of the PRIME intervention, a complex health service intervention to improve care for malaria at health centres in rural Uganda. Conceptual and methodological challenges were encountered in each area of investigation. Opportunities for improving each methodological application are suggested alongside an overall recommendation for greater reflection on, and reporting of, the processes and investments necessary for conducting complex interventions research. Additionally, the evidence produced in each area of investigation revealed different, partial and incommensurable accounts of the intervention and its effects. This draws attention to the challenges that can arise when seeking to combine evidence of ‘what works’ with evidence from methodologies that employ different approaches to understanding how interventions are taken up and produce effects. Approaches to accounting for complexity in intervention research need to evolve from focusing on the narrow question of ‘what works’ towards emphasising a more dynamic and multi-perspective question of ‘what happens’. Such an approach may be particularly useful for understanding the multiple and varied effects of complex interventions and their role in improving health and wellbeing.

Lunt, Camille Cherie. "Segment and Intersection Crash Analysis Methodologies for Utah Highways." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2020. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/8732.

Full text
Abstract:
This research focuses on the Crash Analysis Methodology for Segments (CAMS) which provides a way for engineers at the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) to prioritize safety improvements on state-owned roadways. Unlike the Utah crash analysis methodologies that come before it, the CAMS focuses exclusively on segment-related crashes. The benefits of such an analysis can be found in identifying locations that have safety concerns unbiased from intersections and their related crashes. The CAMS uses UDOT data to create a spreadsheet of roadway segments and their associated crashes. Each segment is homogeneous with respect to five variables: Annual Average Daily Traffic (AADT), functional class, number of lanes, speed limit, and urban code. In the statistical analyses performed on the data, four years of crash data (2014-2017) are used to predict distributions of crashes for the most recent year of data (2018). Observed crash counts are compared to the predicted distributions and assigned a percentile value within the distributions, and segments are subsequently ranked in order of safety concern according to those percentiles. Two-page technical reports are created for segments that rank high in the state or UDOT Region. These reports consist of concise tables of roadway data and crash trends pertaining to each segment. Research analysts also add observations made in virtual site visits to the reports. In the end, the results and the reports are sent to UDOT where UDOT Region engineers may review and study identified segments in further detail. This research also includes modifications made to the Intersection Safety Analysis Methodology (ISAM) which focuses exclusively on intersection-related crashes. The modifications made to the ISAM mirror the abilities of the CAMS, thus allowing the pair of methodologies to analyze the entire state route network without overlapping any crash data.

Abstract:
This thesis stems from the author's interest in the practical application of Operational Research (OR) at the personal level and for the benefit of the human endeavours of individuals and small groups. The literature has devoted hardly any attention to this area, concentrating instead on the application of OR to large organisations. From the practical experience of applying OR to family financial decision making and planning situations, a realisation has grown that OR can be of benefit, not just financially but also in terms of fairness and satisfaction, to human decision making and planning more generally.

Abstract:
The title of this thesis is "The South African Research Landscape: the use of traditional and alternative methodologies in addressing information shortages". This thesis demonstrates the journey of a researcher working in and learning from the South African research landscape. The journey pays attention to the researcher's realisation that traditional research is insufficient and unable to address the information shortages suffered in a developing country. Although one does in no way imply the disregarding of traditional research, alternative methodologies need to be developed and deployed in providing a country such as South Africa with the information required to at least maintain the progress that has been made in the last years. Through this thesis the researcher therefore places two aspects on the table that can add to the success of South African businesses - firstly the optimisation of market oriented businesses through research insights gained using traditional research methodologies that are combined with customer lifestyle insights in under-developed markets gained from community-based participatory research projects.

Indigenous rights movements in Latin America are fighting to overturn the colonial hegemonies that continue to pervade contemporary life on the continent. The Guaraní people, for instance, have devised advanced strategies to decolonize mobile media services through local ownership. While most research on indigenous media focuses on the activities of organizations and the nature of media content, this thesis draws attention to the politics surrounding indigenous people's means of interpersonal communication and provides unprecedented evidence regarding the implications of decolonizing mobile media services. The results of this research, which adopts a critical, multi-sited approach that combines community-based collaboration with an analysis of the political economy, compel us to question the techno-optimism inherent to digital inclusion discourse and to further explore how inequalities shape civic influence on the media. Most significantly, this research ties together key factors that affect the individual agency of those at the so-called "digital margin" over their mobile media services.

Abstract:
Mainstream institutions have, historically, dismissed Indigenous worldviews, knowledges, and research approaches (Bowman-Farrell, 2015; Harrington & Pavel, 2013). However, in recent years, a literature has emerged articulating Indigenous research methodologies (IRMs), and their distinctiveness from Western, Eurocentric perspectives on inquiry (Denzin, Lincoln, & Smith, 2008; Kovach, 2009; Smith, 1999 & 2012; Wilson, 2008). This has coincided with increased need for IRM scholars and practitioners to secure extramural funds to support their activities. But questions remain as to how the U.S. federal grant making enterprise has accommodated Indigenous frameworks. This research explores synergies in the ways that grantees, grant makers, and other related stakeholders understand and navigate the federal funding enterprise in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and health (STEM-H) fields; and the impact of how, and to what extent, this space is successfully navigated. To align with Indigenous worldviews, I use triple theoretical lenses of Tribal Critical Race Theory (Brayboy, 2005), Storytelling, and Interstitial Spaces (Cram & Philips, 2011), and an indigenized case study design. Eleven participants from Tribal Colleges and Universities and tribal communities, federal funding agencies, and consulting firms participated in unstructured interviews to tell their views about Indigenous approaches in the federal funding environment. Coupled with document review, the analysis showed that perceptions of risk, evidence, and expertise were sources of tension, although there were also areas of real and lasting success. I suggest that despite policies to diversify STEM-H grant making, Indigenous perspectives have largely been excluded from these discourses. This may have the effect of compromising the integrity of the validity construct as used in the dominant research methodology literature. I offer a model, called Fifth Paradigm Grantsmanship, as one means to usher transformative change in grant making.

As the biomanufacturing (BioMAN) initiative within the MIT Center for Biomedical Innovation enters its third year of active research, the competitive landscape and sources of resources to support biomanufacturing research have rapidly changed. This research is an attempt to provide insight into the following primary questions: **What research strategies could BioMAN effectively employ moving forward? **What is a specific example of BioMAN research targeted towards new potential resource sources? **What are the details of the research approach for a project that would be of interest to both existing and new resource sources? By leveraging a competitive analysis framework, a recommendation was developed for BioMAN to pursue the market segment of system-based research-centric programs without offering training or custom projects. Specific potential resource sources and collaboration partners were identified towards meeting this target market. An example interdisciplinary research program proposal was constructed with the intent to submit to the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. Additionally, the details of planned approach to a project focused on biomanufacture location decisions were developed towards attracting support from both industrial partners and non-profit foundations.

Abstract:
There is a great deal of concern regarding teacher impacts on student achievement being used as a substantial portion of a teacher’s performance evaluation. This study investigated the degree of concordance and discordance between mathematics teacher ranking using value tables and covariate regression, which have both been used as measures for teacher effectiveness. The researcher examined teacher rankings, before and after the state recommended classification, using correlational techniques, comparison matrices, and visual examination for value-added scores derived from the value table versus the covariate regression approach. Examination demonstrated strong correlations between the initial rankings (r = .77 to .98) and a high concordance (γ = .96 to 1.0) once the recommended classifications were applied to the teachers rankings. The overall implications of this project are that more complex methods may parse the impact information out with higher statistical accuracy, however, once the recommended classification is applied to the methods there may be very little difference in the classification of teachers.

Abstract:
Abstract The main focus of this study is the identification of factors influencing the use and effectiveness of information system development methodologies (Le., systems development methodologies) in health information systems. In essence, it can be viewed as exploratory research, utilizing a conceptual research model to investigate the relationships among the hypothesised factors. More specifically, classified as behavioural science, it combines two theoretical models, namely the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology and the Expectancy Disconfirmation Theory. The main aim of behavioural science in information systems is to assist practitioners (Le., social actors) in improving business processes and competitiveness, thus the effective use of information systems. A wider view of behavioural science incorporates other social actors (e.g., end users) and organisational actors (e.g., executives). In health information systems, the effective use of information systems is especially relevant Health information systems are vital in the area of health care, since only by having access to pertinent health information, can the correct decisions relating to diagnostics and curative procedures be made. The use of systems development methodologies in health information systems development is therefore crucial, since they can make the development process more effective, while improving software quality. By empirically evaluating the conceptual research model, utilizing a survey as the main research method and structural equation modelling as the main statistical technique, meaningful results were obtained. Focussing on the factors influencing the individual's behavioural intent, it was found that the compatibility of systems development methodologies to the developer's pre-existing software development style is vital. Furthermore, performance expectancy, self-efficacy, organisational culture, policies, customer influence, voluntariness and facilitating conditions, all directly influenced the use of systems development methodologies, with policies and customer influence playing a significant role, especially in relation to health information systems. No significant direct effects or indirect effects could be established for the factors effort expectancy, personal innovativeness and social influence. It appears that individuals working in the health care software development discipline are more autonomous, less influenced by others. Also, the lack of support for the factor effort expectancy may indicate that systems development methodologies have entered a mature state, with less concern on the effort required for use. Furthermore, with regard to effectiveness and the continued use of information systems methodologies, satisfaction had a significant direct effect, with confirmation having a significant indirect effect. Keywords: behavioural science; conceptual research model; direct effect; exploratory research; Expectancy Disconfirmation Theory; indirect effect; Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology; structural equation modelling; survey; systems development methodologies.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine if an association exists between reading methodologies and reading achievement as measured by the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP) for sixth-grade students. The four reading methodology groups were: developmental reading, literature-based reading, Accelerated Reader program, and Accelerated Reader program with vocabulary study. The sample included 236 students in one middle school located in Northeast Tennessee during the 2004-2005 school year. Comparisons were made using TCAP criterion-referenced test reading/language arts scores, TCAP proficiency levels for content, meaning, and vocabulary categories for 2005, and pretest and posttest scores on the student assessment of reading. Data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). The findings indicated significant differences in the reading methodology groups. The developmental group performed much lower than the other three groups. The literature-based group performed much higher than the other groups. Even when the analysis of the gain scores showed no statistical difference among groups, the literature-based group had the largest gain. The students in this study exceeded the state's annual goal of scoring 80% proficient or higher. The literature-based group and both Accelerated Reader groups exceeded the goal by achieving 90% on proficiency levels, whereas the developmental group failed to meet the state's goal in content and meaning but met the goal for vocabulary. Overall, the Accelerated Reader and Accelerated Reader with vocabulary groups were similar across all dependent variables.

Abstract:
A comprehensive survey of more than 1,500 former participants in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) along with more than 300 semi-structured interviews with former WIC participants were designed and conducted in order to identify the barriers influencing eligible program participants to leave the program prematurely. Results from the two phases of data collection were used to determine why eligible families are leaving the WIC program, to better understand the program participation barriers cited by former program participants in order to facilitate the development of a typology of program â leavers,â and to identify the policy and organizational components that provide context for premature WIC program departure by participants. A narrative approach to organizational understanding and Symbolic Interactionism are utilized to provide a theoretical framework for highlighting program areas which may contribute to the participation barriers discovered in this research. Implications for public administration and policy evaluation are provided.

Henshall, Anthony Wilton. "An investigation into the possibility of using sociological research methodologies for the elicitation of tacit knowledge for building knowledge intensive systems." Thesis, University of Salford, 1995. http://usir.salford.ac.uk/14775/.

Full text
Abstract:
The research notes that deficiencies in knowledge acquisition are impeding the advancement of Knowledge Intensive Systems (KIS), such as Expert Systems (ES) and Decision Support Systems (DSS). Humphreys (1989) maintains the problem is not the quantity of knowledge collected but its quality. Humphreys (1989) contends that 'Knowledge' has too narrow a definition in knowledge acquisition dogma and a wider definition of 'knowledge' capable of handling 'procedural uncertainty' is required. 'Tacit knowledge' by which Polanyi (1967) contends individuals interpret the world appears a fruitful area to widen the definition of knowledge. The subjective nature of tacit knowledge makes its explication problematic, however, it is noted that tacit knowledge has a social aspect (interiorization) which appears amenable to sociological investigation. On the basis of the above it seemed prudent to focus the investigation down to the following research question, 'On the basis of its nature, is there a method whereby at least some tacit knowledge can be explicated for. a) building the knowledge base; b) more accurately predicting or planing for its usage and for setting expectations.' To test the thesis, a pilot investigation was undertaken at a local Housing Association in order to gain first hand experience of knowledge acquisition. Examples of how experts tacitally classify their domain were identified and methods of explicating this knowledge were tentatively formulated. The above resulted in the formulation of a new perspective: traditionally KBS has concerned itself with eliciting knowledge to be embodied in the knowledge base, whereas, IS has concerned itself in gaining the knowledge involved in the systems use/interpretation. Fieldwork was later conducted in the maternity units of two local hospitals in order to test the generalizability of these methods. Five methods for the explication of tacit knowledge were identified. 1) The analysis of the reification of existing systems and the rationality internal to these systems, can be used to explicate tacit knowledge. 2) More than one set of tacit knowledge can be present in one domain. Points where two sets of tacit knowledge interact expose contradictions which can be used as a tool to explicate the tacit knowledge of both groups. 3) The analysis of anecdotes revealed how domains were tacitally delimited and the 'criticality' of tasks within a domain. 4) Action research using a 'mock up' data base revealed tacitally held domain knowledge with implications for micro level criticality, of particular importance to interface design. 5) The thesis identified knowledge acquisition as a method of sociological investigation.

Abstract:
In the past, Maori experiences of research have been described by Jahnke and Taiapa (1999) as follows: "Contemporary Maori society has become increasingly focused on issues of self-sufficiency, self-determination and whanau, hapu and iwi development. Attempts to address these issues have highlighted a lack of satisfactory research in respect of these and other Maori concerns. Much of the research done on Maori in the past has proven to be of little benefit to Maori themselves, tending to emphasise negative statistics without attempting to provide the information necessary to effect positive change. As a consequence, many Maori treat research with a degree of suspicion, questioning both the motives of researches and the methodologies employed" (p.37). A number of tools have been used to define the public health of Maori, including Maori women. This dissertation aims to describe some of the methodologies and methods used in relation to analytical frameworks developed by leading Maori research academics such as Linda Tuhiwai Smith, in critiquing research undertaken defining the key public health issues for Maori women. Maori Health Researchers experiences of research, methodologies and methods used have also been determined based on qualitative interview techniques. There are currently significant gaps in both the information in determining the methodologies and methods used, particularly in research contributing to gains for Maori women.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis proposes a new way of thinking about conversation as a methodology and argues that conversation itself can be considered as an art practice. The practice research has been developed through a body of five artworks produced between 2012-14, each of which directly engaged with communities and residents of the city of Nottingham, UK, and emerged in relation to the specificity of this location. The doctoral research has been presented within the international contexts of art and social science through several seminars and conferences, including the researcher's co-founding and co-curation of InDialogue (2012 – present), a biannual interdisciplinary symposium. The research engages with existing work on conversation and the dialogic by Allan Kaprow, David Bohm, Mikhail Bakhtin, Grant H. Kester and Hubert Hermans, from which it develops a socio-artistic and philosophical framework to theoretically underpin a body of dialogic practice. For the purpose of this thesis, PhD stands for Practice in High Definition: the body of work produced has been tested and analysed to develop an original methodology, which has been termed APSSL, to describe its five key features: architactics, performativity, storyteller, social activism and legacy. The thesis sets out the framework for a performative and experiential approach, providing examples of the orchestration of space and the dialogic architectures of site and body. Conversation is considered as a methodological producer and as the instigator of practice. Aesthetic in approach, the methodology is recognised for its socializing power in terms of generating the opportunity for a public presentation of self and other, and for the mobility of voices in spaces. It establishes that there can be an artistry of conversation.

Full text
Abstract:
Background and objectives: It has been argued that the binary framework frequently adopted to analyse test accuracy does not represent the clinical reality of diagnostic practice, and the recognition of an intermediate category of test result could make the utility of diagnostic tests more transparent. The objective of this thesis is to explore the value of moving away from the binary framework when evaluating and interpreting quantitative diagnostic tests. Methods: This thesis starts with an overview of the key arguments against dichotomising quantitative test results and a summary of some of the alternative methods proposed. Four distinct studies are then reported: 1) a systematic review of the methods currently used to evaluate the accuracy of quantitative cancer biomarkers, 2) a survey of GPs exploring preferences for threshold guidance 3) an evaluation of existing methods for identifying an intermediate range of test values, and 4) an assessment of the feasibility of applying these methods to the results of a meta-analysis. Results: The binary framework remains the most common method for evaluating the accuracy of quantitative tests, despite the survey of GPs indicating that a single threshold interpretation is less helpful than identifying rule-in and rule-out thresholds. Existing methods for identifying an intermediate range of values require some adaptation to incorporate the cost trade-offs relating to different outcomes but, given complete reporting at the primary research, could be applied to the results of a meta-analysis. Conclusion: The 2 x 2 diagnostic framework frequently fails to capture many of the realities and complexities of clinical research questions. Standardised methods that facilitate complete reporting of test accuracy in primary diagnostic accuracy studies are required to allow for greater flexibility when producing threshold recommendations further down the evidence pathway.

Peret, Trevor, and Loyd Lee Glenn. "Psychometrics of a Member Check Instrument for Credibility and Generalizability Assessments in Qualitative Research." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2020. https://dc.etsu.edu/honors/533.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose was to evaluate the psychometric properties of an 8-item questionnaire instrument to support member checks in positivistic qualitative research. A sample of 1603 junior-level university nursing students (98.2% participation rate) a completed the questionnaire instrument which assessed how closely a written description of the lived experience of in-hospital training applied to their personal experience. The instrument had excellent psychometric properties, including high measurement reliability (α=0.94), strong concurrent validity (72.2%-77.4%), discriminant validity (p < 0.000001), a parametric score distribution with little kurtosis and no skew, and an average score (G score) was centered at midpoint of the scale (midpoint of 4 on a scale from 1 to 7). The experience match was at the level of “matches experience to high degree,” showing the transferability (generalizability) of the findings to the present sample. The instrument can be used to assess the credibility and transferability of findings from qualitative research, assist in finding negative cases, determine the degree of saturation and success of bracketing, and complement the constant comparative method. The instrument is recommended for general use in positivistic qualitative or naturalistic inquiry studies for any type of sample and any type of lived experience. This approach would magnify and empower the reach of the products of qualitative research.

This dissertation presents research on the relationship between children and the Internet, specifically their relationship with websites. It interviewed children living in a Vila Residencial (Residential Village) about their day-to-day lives in order to investigate how they used the websites they access. Researching private spaces where questions of friendship, authority and research methodology played a central role provided challenges that were present throughout the process; from field work to writing the results. An additional issue which goes beyond methodological discussions involved how to manage the roles of researcher and playmate when conducting research through games and play. The reflections on how to create an appropriate research methodology in private spaces received contributions from authors such as Nilda Alves, Mikhail Baktin, Marília Amorin, Angela Borba, Fabiana Marcello, and others. The questions about the childrens daily life were built mainly from the debate with Michel de Certeau. More specific reflections on the Internet emerged from the work in the field and with the children, and were assisted by André Lemos, Edméa Santos, Lucia Santaella, Marco Silva and others.

Abstract:

This research attempt, as its title witnesses, aims to build interdisciplinary approaches and to bridge gaps within management. Management and more specific, management of industrial organizations is a scientific discipline that consists of many different fields of interest. In industrial organizations, different parties of people, such as managers, engineers and workers are asked to communicate and collaborate towards common organizational targets and goals. This is were this research finds fertile ground, and tries to bridge the gaps between the quality management philosophy and corporate culture and the evolving, value adding functions and processes of logistics.

In particular, the gaps between quality management and logistics were bridged by a demonstration of the applicability of quality management practices –tools and methodologies- in a logistics context. This was conducted by an extensive exploratory research by means literature analysis of both management disciplines. The present situation, put in academic literature, was investigated and thoughtful reflections and suggestions for further use of quality management practices within logistics were provided.

All the quality management tools and methodologies examined were found, with one or another way, to be employed in logistics processes. Numerous examples demonstrating the universality of quality management concepts and techniques were identified. When it comes to the specific management area of logistics, eight quality management practices were found particularly useful, with three of them, namely Service Quality, SPC and Benchmarking to be well known, and to some extent, mature within logistics. However, empirical research, of qualitative and quantitative nature, is needed to confirm the trends recognized here.

The suggestions and reflections provided throughout this work indicate actions to be taken by logistics managers, in order to apply well known and widely accepted, cost saving and quality improvement, practices to their operations. In addition, these suggestions and their potential, constitute a challenging field for further research were new, applicable to logistics, quality management tools and methodologies can be found and ones that already exist can be enhanced.

The originality of this work can be found in that it thesis tries to bring conceptually closer two management areas that although have many values in common are not perceived as working on the same track, towards the same goals. This research adds value in the way that illustrates, in an extensive and formal way, that there should be no barriers within management.

Abstract:
This narrative articulates the advantages of long-term autoethnographic logotherapy. I explore how the practice of long-term autoethnographic logotherapy led me to the point where I was prepared for my father’s death, and how that allowed me to let him go before he actually died. I propose that long-term personal narrative and autoethnographic writing are not merely a form of therapy and healing. Rather, it is a practice aligned with existential psychologist Victor Frankl’s conception of logotherapy, literally “healing through meaning.” Using vignettes, I interrogate canonical narratives about father–son relationships, especially focusing on troubled relationships, and examine standard notions of bereavement.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between older women and contemporary dance in a choreographic project. I explore in what sense the participation in the project is of artistic value to these women and also what happens in the meeting between me as a researcher, the project itself and the women. The background of this study is a personal interest in age, body and dance as well as an ambition to change normative ideas about the dancer body through action. With a globally ageing population, I have an interest in highlighting an aging female body as a resource in the context of contemporary dance. The study is conducted on the basis of post-qualitative research and decolonizing methodology. The artistic practice is leading and is based on the experiences of the women who participate in the project. As a researcher, my participation in the practice is necessary. By articulating and visualizing the marginality of older women, dance discourses are deconstructed. With improvisation as a performative choreographic practice, transformative learning emerges among participants. The findings of the study show that older women are resourceful and have the capacity for change through dance. This can be achieved in interaction with others and can then be an artistic experience. The artistic and pedagogical values which are experienced by the women in relation to contemporary dance are self-determination, trust and a sense of community. Both individual and collective struggle emerge among me and the women as a force of action. I argue that age norms and bodily ideals in contemporary dance can be challenged by giving older women access to contemporary dance. By articulating and visualizing the experiences of a marginalized group, the meaning of the concepts of dance, body and age are deconstructed and new insights are created which challenge and broaden normative ideas about dance and the dancer body.

Abstract:
This dissertation set out to examine the meaning of music for First Nations childrenwith autism in BC, Canada. The research questions addressed were: How can thediagnosis of ASD be seen through a First Nations lens? How do the First Nationschildren with ASD use music? In which ways is music used in different domains? In which ways is music used to facilitate inclusion? How is traditional music used? The dissertation is based on four original articles that span over the issues of under-detection of autism among First Nations children in BC, ethnographic fieldwork, and the paradigmatic shift to Indigenist research methodologies, the role of music insocial inclusion and a First Nations lens on autism, the use of Indigenous music withFirst Nations children with autism, put in context with First Nations children’s rights.Material was collected during six week periods in two consecutive years, generatingdata from conversations, follow-up conversations, observations, video-filmed observations, and notes. Post-colonial BC, Canada is the context of the research, and issuesof social inclusion and children’s rights are addressed. During the research process,a journey that began with an ethnographic approach led to an Indigenist paradigm. It was found that colonial residue and effects of historical trauma can influenceFirst Nations children being under-detected for autism. The First Nations childrendiagnosed with autism in this study use music in similar ways to typically developingchildren and non-Indigenous individuals with autism. These uses include for communicationand relaxation, for security and happiness, to soothe oneself and whenstudying. However, music interventions in school settings are not culturally sensitive.Music as a tool for inclusion is overlooked and Indigenous music not utilizedoutside of optional Aboriginal classes. The most important lesson of the study wasthe significance of reciprocal experience, emphasized by the Indigenist paradigm. Itcan be suggested that carefully designed, culturally sensitive music interventions,in collaboration with traditional knowledge holders and Elders, would be beneficialfor the development of First Nations children with autism. Consequently, culturallysensitive music interventions could have potential to ensure that the children’s rightsare respected. For these interventions to be culturally adequate, specific IndigenousKnowledge must be the foundation.

Abstract:
International evidence clearly indicates that water shortages and the enhanced value attached to water and aquatic ecosystems are key concerns faced by many countries. International experience, since the mid-1980s, has emphasised the importance of addressing political, social, environmental and economic issues through active stakeholder participation in riverine and water resource management. These trends and issues are relevant to South Africa, where integrated water resource management (IWRM) is now a cornerstone of water resource policy and the National Water Act (NWA). Apartheid excluded communities in former homelands (racial reserves) from participation in IWRM. The research presented in this thesis was based on the search for philosophies and methods to involve the rural, former homeland people of the Kat River Valley in South Africa in IWRM. Post-modern, humanist and some logical positivist geographical philosophies were used during the research. This research applied Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) philosophy and methods and was influenced by the seminal work of Paolo Freire (1972). In addition, the use of innovative methods for engagement of the oppressed, using theatre methods developed by Augusto Boal (1995, 2000) was explored to add value to PRA. In addition, the application of Action Research ensured that community participants were actively involved in the research being conducted for this thesis. The applied research in the Kat River Valley in South Africa evolved through three key phases. In Phase One quantifiable data on the Kat River Valley and its residents was sought. This investigation did not empower the resident communities of Fairbairn and Hertzog – a lesson that influenced the move to more participatory methods in subsequent phases of the research. Lessons learned from using surveys encouraged exploration of participatory methods to enable participants to become “co-learners”. Phase Two of the research commenced with a series of feedback meetings, in which participants recognised that they faced an environmental crisis. Through a series of participatory workshops, residents came to acknowledge and affirm their environmental knowledge. Residents then committed themselves to gaining a deeper understanding of their environment and their lives. My role changed from that of a researcher to a facilitator. Phase Three of the research and the shift to Action Research commenced after local residents identified the need to personally take charge of their environmental challenges in the Kat River Valley and recognised the need to collaborate at a catchment scale for effective IWRM. This eventually led to the formation of a Water User Association and Catchment Forum. The key theoretical contribution of the thesis relates to the identified relationship between the development orientation and ecological paradigm, and an assessment of the impact this has on the inputs, processes, outputs and outcomes of IWRM. This theoretical contribution is equally valid in other countries, where the tradeoffs are essentially the same, but the framework for making the choices is different because of varying socio-economic and biophysical circumstances

This work is the result of the researcher’s participation in the Observatory-Network of the More Doctors Program (Rede-Observatório do Programa Mais Médicos), whose studies allowed me to encounter more than what the objectives of a project can prescribe. Composed by narratives, this work aims to make visible the knowledge evoked by the research experience which tend not to compose the final reports and which is not recognized as scientific production. It regards, therefore, to the visibility of the micropolitical dimension in research practices and the knowledge about the implementation of the Program, fragments of the act of researching and of the More Doctors Program itself. It is inspired by Brazilian productions in the field of Saúde Coletiva (Public Health), the cartography’s indications of methodological tracks, Lourau’s Institutional Analysis, Benjamin’s narrativity, Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s schizoanalysis, among other works and authors, pursuing disjunctions and interfaces between them, that this work builds its theoretical grounds. Wandering through Brasília, the interiors of university rooms or the immensity of the Amazon Forest, these narratives aim to indicate a detour from the majoritary in Science, liberating the production of knowledge from a subordination to the Cartesian.

Abstract:
Aim: This thesis reports the outcomes of a study designed to explore whether and how ethical and responsive interviewing of children in care with varying levels of sensitivity to topics that may threaten their felt security can be achieved. Background: Children come into care with a complex array of developmental challenges. They have often experienced maltreatment, loss and disrupted attachment relationships. Little is known about the effects of interviewing children in care with varying sensitivity to questioning strategies designed to measure felt security and their perceptions of being in care. Methods: The present study was iteratively designed using an exploratory mixed qualitative design. Children’s reports (N= 12) were collected using a series of iteratively designed interview methodologies supplemented by information provided by their kinship carers. Results: The following factors influence the comfort experiences of children in care: interviewer skill, interviewer and child role, child competence (perceived and real), child characteristics, external factors, ethical factors and the interview methods. The potential influence of mental health status and age were less clear. Factors related to felt insecurity were: relational, self-perceived competence and confidentiality related factors. The maintenance of the comfort experience of children in care when interviewing, cuts across many dimensions of the research context including relational, performance and methodological aspects. Children engaged in strategies to mediate their comfort, this was somewhat reliant on the methodologies and interviewer competency. Overall acceptable levels of comfort were reported to be maintained over the span of the research process. Conclusions: Children in care have vulnerabilities that need to be addressed when including them in research. Careful consideration to the design of studies and interview methodologies will ensure children in care can participate in protective research environments. The benefits to this are reflected in the gathering of quality data which can contribute to the timely provision of the appropriate services for children in care. The present study findings provide guidance for future research involving children in various types of alternate care.

In recent years, we can see a growing interest in using agile methodologies as a strategy to minimize the problems in software development. Nevertheless, little is known as requirements engineering is being conducted in conjunction with these methodologies. In this context, the objective of this research is to investigate how the requirements engineering and agile methodologies have been used jointly in practice in software development projects applied in the industry. For this, it was conducted a systematic literature mapping that found 24 relevant primary studies, whose data were extracted and synthesized. This mapping identified the most used techniques and process of requirements engineering and what are the main problems and limitations encountered in the context of agile development. After the execution of the mapping, it was found that lack of user involvement associated with the characteristics of current techniques used to specify requirements and their constant changes are the main challenges to overcome.
