Abstract:
In the first part of my dissertation I demonstrate that Rorty's neo-pragmatism and Der-rida's openness to the Other give rise, in their practical applications, to the same arbi-trariness as the one usually attributed to a society shaped by Hegelian dialectic. A prob-lem arises, in a deconstructive attitude in decision-making, when we notice that any need, desire and interest of the other is an expression of a preceding arbitrary allocation of wealth, occupations and economic potentialities. This makes such seemingly "spon-taneous" desires a reflection of constrained everyday life economic inte

This thesis is based primarily on work published in academic refereed journals between 1994 and 2003. Taken as a whole, the thesis explores and enacts an evolving methodology for curriculum inquiry which foregrounds the generativity of fiction in reading, writing and representing curriculum problems and issues. This methodology is informed by the narrative and textual 'turns' in the humanities and social sciences - especially poststructuralist and deconstructive approaches to literary and cultural criticism - and is performed as a series of narrative experiments and 'intertextual turns'. This thesis investigates law and analyses its representations in popular culture. Law is a powerful institution within western society with a regulatory role that is supported by a range of complementary discourses that accord with society's dominant cultural values. This thesis proposes that while such institutional hegemony is never stable as there is always an expectation of challenge or resistance, law is currently experiencing a series of challenges on numerous fronts. Legal commentators themselves acknowledge that law now faces a ‘crisis of confidence' that may affect its status and impa

The third chapter explains many of the implications of Derrida's thought in Of Grammatology. Some of the distinctions between humans and other animals are rethought. In the fourth chapter, Derrida opens Rousseau's conceptions of pity and justice to include nonhuman animals. Next, the decons

It suggests that people in LAT relationships creatively draw and re-draw the boundaries of family belonging in ways that involve emotionally subjective understandings of family life, and that also refer to normative constructions of what ‘family’ ought to be, as

Abstract This study is a comparative analysis of selected poems from Jacques Prévert’s Paroles (1946/1947). It is an application of a mainstreamed theoretical paradigm comprising deconstruction, hermeneutics and relevance. The overall aim is to show how each translator of Jacques Prévert derived latent and relatively obvious semantic possibilities from the ST. This objective is attained through a descriptive analysis of the translation process, and an attempt to interpret the findings thereby revealed, primarily according to the tenets of deconstruction, and according to the tenets of

In the interplay between protection of rights and majoritarianism, the court is the arena. This research focuses on the conflicting role of the court within a constitutional democracy and a contestation of the counter-majoritarian dilemma that emerges from such a role. The counter-majoritarian dilemma centres on the idea that judges overturning decisions of the legislature through judicial review undermines democracy by thwarting the will of the majority through a subjective reading of abstract constitutional principles.
