Abstract:
This essay in both literary criticism and negative theology treats three widely diverse cases of women who “had the nerve to enter a zone of absolute spiritual daring.” The three cases are of the poet Sappho (in seventh-century Greek antiquity), the mystic Margarite Porete (in fourteenth-century France), and the philosopher Simone Weil (in twentieth-century France). Each of them underwent “an experience of decreation, or so she tells us.” Decreation, which is Simone Weil’s coinage, is here defined as “an undoing of the creature in us—that creature enclosed in self and defined by self. Abstract This article explores how the notion of decreation manifests itself in the signifying strategies of Anne Carson’s Decreation: Poetry, Essays, Opera (2005). By revisiting Carson’s stereoscopic poetics and Wolfgang Iser’s branch of reader-response criticism, the article conceptualises these signification strategies, which include generic hybridity and multimodality, as guiding devices that usher the reader’s perspective towards a stereoscopic vision of sameness-in-otherness. These strategies can evoke a sense of ‘decreation’ by drawing the reader’s attention to the boundary between (app

AbstractReligious answers to the question of how the world has come into being fall roughly into two categories: mythical narratives and doctrinal formulations based on cosmogonical mythology. In explaining how the world has come into being, such myths and doctrines also tell us something about the conditions before the world was created. David Herbst's "co-genetic" logic is used to explain why we are prone to think that if the world is a spatio-temporal entity, there has to be a "not-world" before and beyond it. Abstract:
The concept of compassion has recently held a controversial role in political thought. Critics have tied it with the condescension and latent self-interest of pity, while proponents have asserted it as the ethical posture from which to approach the suffering of others. This thesis looks at the role of compassion in the political sphere, arguing that political compassion involves a decentring of oneself as the primary subject of political action, looking instead to forego one’s own desire and to replace it with the desire of another. It pays particular attention to the thought of Hannah Arendt,

If Weil was an early subject of Agamben’s intellectual curiosity, it would appear – judging from his published works – that her influence upon him has been neither central nor lasting.1 Leland de la Durantaye argues that Weil’s work has left a mark on Agamben’s philosophy of potentiality, largely in his discussion of the concept of decreation; but de la Durantaye does not make much of Weil’s influence here, determining that her theory of d

Abstract:
This chapter examines the decreative aim of obligation through the contrasting poles of destitution and extravagance in the context of Simone Weil’s personal experiences. It argues that the ethical relationship between oneself and the other presumes a love that seeks to fulfill itself in the form of a withdrawal that entails the renunciation of the “I” and its egological claims to centrality and plenitude. Accordingly, decreating the “I” implies a kind of destitution that, however contradictory, underwrites one’s love of the other. Weil’s account of withdrawal in her own life – particularly in her “spiritual autobiography” which affirms impersonal being – nonetheless reinscribes the self at the scene of its depersonalization. The problematic pursued in this chapter, then, is the antinomy through which decreation unfolds.

Abstract:
This chapter shows how the last letters of Simone Weil reveal a tension between an imperative to speak and preserving an essential emptiness through silence. Through a discussion of “the perfect demand” which asks for what already, infallibly exists, this chapter demonstrates the outward incongruity of the completeness of the object of one’s certitude (which exists independently of its being realized) and the narrative incompletion of positing such an object. In this context, the chapter considers Weil’s unheeded demand to be made use of in a Resistance mission in view of the decreative obligation to preserve the other from harm. What can we say about this responsibility to the other at the crux of her petitions – one that in its articulation is enacted without being fulfilled? The chapter suggests that it is an exercise of articulation that brings into view the reality of existence and the fundamentally empty petition of decreation.
