Noe-Norman, Resa Jane. "Evaluating Behavioral Health Homes to Decrease Emergency Department Use." ScholarWorks, 2017. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/3361.

Full text
Abstract:
The Affordable Care Act of 2010 proposed a new integrated care model for individuals with chronic mental illness and multiple medical comorbidities by using Behavioral Health Homes (BHH). The purpose of this doctoral project was to evaluate the effectiveness of the BHH in reducing emergency department (ED) use in the community mental health outpatient setting. Guided by the American Association for Critical Care Nurses synergy model for patient care a cross-sectional, post-test only with comparison group quasi-experimental research design was used. A de-identified data set of 68 patient records in the BHH group and 73 patient records in non-BHH as a control group were analyzed using logistic regression. The analysis revealed that participants in the BHH were statistically less likely to visit the ED. Sensitivity was 16.2%, specificity was 95.2%, positive predictive value was 54.5%, and negative predictive value was 76.2%. The Homer-Lemeshow and omnibus test of model coefficients showed the model was a good fit (p=.726, p=.007). Participants in BHH were .225 less likely to visit the ED. For every year of reduction in age, the odds of visiting the ED increased by a factor of 1.0. Females had a 1.8 higher odds of visiting the ED than males. This study provides evidence for the effectiveness of the BHH in reducing visits to the ED. Standard measures to track ED use in BHH are essential to understanding reasons for ED use and reducing nonurgent use. The BHH has the potential to transform health care delivery toward an all-inclusive model of care. Providers can utilize the findings of this project to promote social change by targeting patients with serious mental illness and reducing health disparities by emphasizing preventive care and eliminating barriers to care.

Rittgers, Melissa. "An Evaluation of Resurgence in an Applied Setting: Teaching Multiple Responses to Decrease Resurgence." OpenSIUC, 2015. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/theses/1703.

Full text
Abstract:
Resurgence is the re-emergence of a previously extinguished response following the establishment and elimination of reinforcement for an alternative response. Resurgence has been evaluated with non-human animals (Epstien, 1983; Lieving & Lattal, 2003) as well as in translational and applied studies with humans (Bruzek & Thompson, 2006; Hoffman & Falcomata, 2014; Lieving et al., 2004). Mitigating resurgence can be an important clinical concern to address when the initially extinguished response (i.e., the one that resurges) is problem behavior. The current study sought to extend previous research from Carrasquillo (2014) related to the effect teaching multiple alternative responses might have on levels of resurgence. Three participants with developmental disabilities participated in the study. One participant’s behavior did not come under control of the contingencies, thus resurgence could not be evaluated. For the remaining two participants, some level of resurgence was noted following extinction of single alternative and multiple alternative responses. When resurgence occurred, it was less pronounced in the context associated with the multiple alternative responses. These results supported previous, similar findings. The results are discussed with respect to the implications for future research and clinical practice.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to expand on research by evaluating the effects of response interruption redirection and response cost alone to reduce vocal stereotypy and to evaluate whether response cost increases the effectiveness of response interruption redirection. Treatment phases included response interruption redirection, response cost, and response interruption redirection plus response cost. We saw high rates of vocal stereotypy during baseline, toy baseline, and pre-intervention phases. During all treatment phases, we saw substantial decreases in stereotypy. For two of the three participants response interruption redirection and response cost was a slightly more effective treatment suggesting that using response interruption redirection with an additive of response cost may further suppress stereotypy. These results were replicated across phases. For one participant response interruption redirection was the most effective treatment. All three treatments reduced vocal stereotypy to clinically acceptable levels for two participants. For one participant, there was only a slight decrease in stereotypy when RC was implemented. We discuss limitations and areas for future research.

Mutamiri, Farai. "A Critical historical evaluation of the Anglican Diocese of Harare's decade of turmoil, 2002-2012." Thesis, University of Pretoria, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/66354.

Full text
Abstract:
The Anglican Diocese of Harare found itself dragged through a decade of turmoil which ran from 2002 to 2012, by the actions of its sitting Bishop, Bishop Nolbert Kunonga who, for reasons, of which some are highlighted in this research, became intent on severing ties with the Church of the Province of Central Africa (CPCA). In the process Bishop Nolbert Kunonga formed his own Province called the Anglican Province of Zimbabwe (APZ) but, notwithstanding this, was determined to hold on to the properties that belonged to the CPCA. The build-up to the formation of the APZ, saw the Anglican Diocese of Harare clergy and laity being subjected to and witnessing the total disregard of the Constitution and Canons of the Province of Central Africa by Bishop Kunonga and some of those who were supporting him. This unusual development which did not conform to the often cited ‘quest for belonging’, caused a lot of bickering involving the Bishop, some clergy and some parishioners which culminated in an attempt to bring Bishop Kunonga before an ecclesiastical court on thirty-eight charges among them that of inciting murder. The second half of the decade of turmoil, the years 2008 to 2012, was characterised by the persecution of CPCA Anglicans in the Diocese of Harare as they fought to regain their properties. The ‘doctrinal’ reason for withdrawing the Diocese of Harare from CPCA, as cited by Bishop Kunonga, that the CPCA was condoning homosexuality drew the ire of the state. The fierce fighting between the two Provinces, that is the APZ and CPCA, over control of the properties belonging to the Anglican Diocese of Harare, saw the police and state intervening but seemingly taking sides with Bishop Kunonga. By so doing the Anglicans in the Diocese of Harare CPCA ended up appearing as if they were a political outfit fighting the state in the guise of fighting for their properties. The Supreme Court ruling of the 19th of November 2012 brought the matter to its finality when it ruled in favour of the CPCA and declared that Bishop Kunonga had no legal right to claim ownership or control of properties that belonged to an organisation (CPCA) which he had withdrawn from.

Netz, Johan. "First things first - think before you decide : The how, what and who of idea screening." Doctoral thesis, Karlstads universitet, Centrum för tjänsteforskning, 2017. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kau:diva-63719.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates decision-making activities leading to the initial selection of which new ideas should be selected for further development or rejected. This process, often referred to as idea screening, is described as being one of the most important, but also challenging, tasks to master during the entire innovation process. There are two main reasons for this: Firstly, not all ideas are good and secondly no firm has the resources to develop every single idea proposed to it. Thus, it is important to be careful when initially deciding which ideas are to be selected and developed into future possible innovations in order to eliminate weak ideas and retain those that have a substantial chance of becoming successful.  Two alternative decision-making approaches are explored in the thesis (the intuitive and rational approaches). In the thesis, the concept of intuition during the screening of product and service ideas is demystified. The empirical findings show that decision-makers utilize five main underlying criteria when intuitively assessing ideas. Of these, the findings indicate user-value to be the most important one, or at least the criterion that most assessors emphasize when making intuitive decisions. The findings presented in the thesis increase our understanding of the use of rational and holistic intuitive decision-making when screening ideas during the Front End Innovation phase, as well as questioning the traditional view of intuition, as a decision-making tool that is only reliable if applied by those with a vast amount of experience and expertise. The reported findings indicate that, for example, users with an understanding of the idea context are able to intuitively identify the ideas that decision-making experts identify as the top (best) ones. Hence, managers faced with a situation where they are being inundated with new ideas can turn to non-experts for help.

Abstract:
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to describe the experiences of science educators as they select and develop assessment methods for inquiry learning. Balancing preparations for standardized tests and authentic inquiry assessment experiences can be challenging for science educators. The review of literature revealed that current research focused on instructional methods and assessment, students' assessment experiences, and teachers' instructional methods experiences. There remains a gap in current literature regarding the experiences of science educators as they select and develop assessment methods for inquiry learning. This study filled the gap by providing a description of the experiences of science educators as they select and develop assessments for inquiry learning. The participants in this study were 16 fifth through eighth grade science teachers who participate in the Alabama Math, Science, and Technology Initiative (AMSTI) in northwest Alabama. A phenomenological research method was chosen in order to describe the experiences of AMSTI science teachers as they select and develop assessments for inquiry learning. Data were collected through interviews and focus group discussions. The data analysis used a modified Stevick-Colaizzi-Keen framework. The results showed AMSTI science teachers use a variety of assessment resources and methods, feel pressures to meet Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), and implement varying degrees of change in their assessment process due to No Child Left Behind (NCLB). Contributing a positive social change, this study's findings supplied science teachers with descriptions of successful inquiry classrooms and creative assessments that correspond to inquiry-based learning methods.

Rodgers, Rosemary W. "An evaluation of olive oil spray used nightly to decrease the accumulation of earwax in persons aged over 50 years." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2012. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.566285.

Full text
Abstract:
Management of earwax problems is inconsistent and under-researched with a paucity of evidence currently available to inform ear care strategy. This study aimed to determine if daily lubrication of the external ear canal with olive oil enhances the normal expulsion of earwax. The study comprised four components: • A pilot questionnaire survey of 55 ear care exhibition attendees • A cross-sectional ear survey of 483 people in Essex and South Yorkshire. • An experimental study of 50 people over 50 years old, presenting with bilateral occlusive earwax. Subjects instilled nightly measure of olive oil into one ear over 24 weeks, the untreated ear acting as control. • Pre- and post-experiment interviews with experimental subjects. A Visual measure of earwax accumulation throughout the experimental period demonstrated a greater increase in treated ears. This was confirmed by the mean weight of earwax removed from treated ears being 72.6% greater than control ears. All earwax was successfully removed before and after the experimental study without adverse effects, by a novel procedure using olive oil application immediately before earwax removal. The mass of earwax accumulated was much greater in males than females. A slower rate of earwax accumulation with increasing age was demonstrated. A history of prior earwax problems correlated with increased earwax accumulation. Interview data illuminated changes in personal ear care post 11 study and linked some earwax problems to the availability of General Practice care and treatment provided. It is concluded that normal expulsion of earwax from the ear canal is not enhanced by regular lubrication with olive oil: on the contrary the accumulating mass of earwax is increased. Olive oil is, however, beneficial in alleviating itchiness and dry ear skin and to aid earwax removal when applied immediately before this procedure. This study contributes new knowledge, which should encourage future studies and guide development of ear care practice. 12

Abstract:
Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) with over 400 million cases worldwide represents 90% of total diabetes cases. T2D is a degenerative disease associated with insulin resistance and pancreatic β-cells death linked to deposits of the amyloid protein hIAPP (also called amylin), that are observed in the pancreas of over 95% of the T2D patients. The treatments currently available are symptomatic and characterized either by significant side effects or low impact on the incidence of related pathologies and mortality reduction. Thus, to find an etiological treatment for T2D, targeting hIAPP has become a promising strategy to explore. To date, few classes of compounds have been proposed to inhibit hIAPP aggregation process. However, to the best of our knowledge, only very scarce examples of acyclic β-hairpin have been described. Since hIAPP aggregation is a highly complex and dynamic process, we hypothesized that flexible β-hairpins could better adapt to different hIAPP conformations formed during the aggregation process. Our design was based on flexible piperidine pyrrolidine β-turn inducers linked to two different arms inspired by the primary sequence of hIAPP peptide, with a peptidic self-recognition element (SRE) derived from the hIAPP amyloidogenic sequence facing to a peptidic or peptidomimetic blocking sequence. In order to confirm β-hairpin conformation of our inhibitors, our compounds were conformationally studied by NMR and in few cases by molecular dynamics. Then, their ability to interfere with hIAPP aggregation process was primarily evaluated by thioflavin-T fluorescence spectroscopy. The most promising compounds of the series were then investigated by other biophysical assays such as transmission electron microscopy (TEM), capillary electrophoresis (CE) and IMS-MS. The best compounds of the series were then studied to determine their ability to reduce hIAPP toxicity on rat INS-1 pancreatic cells.Having proved the possibility to modulate hIAPP aggregation process employing small acyclic β-hairpin mimics bearing both peptidic and peptidomimetic arms, we then focused our attention on the development of fluorinated hairpin peptidomimetics that, until now, have never been explored either as hIAPP aggregation inhibitors, nor, to our knowledge, more broadly in medicinal chemistry. The preparation of these fluorinated analogues had the double scope to investigate how fluorine, with its unique characteristics, could influence both the activity and the conformations of our inhibitors. In conclusion, the work presented in this thesis provides valuable insight for the development of new acyclic β-hairpin mimics as modulators of hIAPP and potentially new fluorinated tools to further investigate its aggregation process

Vanyan, Anna. "Extension and analysis of hybrid ARQ schemes in the context of cooperative relaying." Phd thesis, Université Paris Sud - Paris XI, 2014. http://tel.archives-ouvertes.fr/tel-01058051.

Full text
Abstract:
In the wireless channel, cooperative communications allow one or many relays to assist the communication between the source and the destination. The aim of this thesis is the development of tools for the analysis of cooperative systems, when HARQ techniques are employed to provide cross-layer error protection. The first chapter of the thesis gives background information on network coding in cooperative relay networks, and introduces the motivation for this work. The second chapter is devoted to the analysis of the energetic-fair performance evaluations of FEC, ARQ-STBC and HARQ schemes at the MAC and IP layers. New analytical framework is derived and applied to a point-to-point network scenario. This framework allows to make energetic fair comparisons between the schemes with and without retransmissions. We determine under which channel conditions the cross-layer error protection is energetically more efficient than the simple channel coding. In the third chapter of this thesis we study the cooperative deterministic protocols. The protocols that we consider differ based on the behaviour of the relay(s), source(s), and destination. We consider two major types of cooperative protocols: decode-and forward (DCF), and demodulate-and-forward (DMF). Each of these protocols in its turn is analysed with and without combining mechanisms at the destination. We derive the soft decoders at the destination side for each respective case, and compare the performances of these protocols at the MAC layer. The following quality of service metrics are evaluated: frame error rate, delay, efficiency, goodput. The analysis is done evaluating the steady-state, using finite state Markov chains and a combinatorial approach. The analysis, however, becomes very complex as the number of transmissions and/or nodes in the network increases. The fourth chapter introduces a class of probabilistic communication protocols, where the devices retransmit with a given probability. We prove the existence of an equivalent class of protocols, with the same performances as the deterministic class. Using proofs of concept it is shown that the probabilistic protocol class allows for tractable steady-state analysis, even for many nodes in the network. Based on this, we then derive the QoS metrics and evalute them also by simulations. The derived performance evaluation metrics are then optimized by constraining the frame error rate, and trying to find the most optimal transmissions number and code rates which maximize the goodput. It is furthermore shown, that the equivalent protocol has larger optimal region than the deterministic one.

Da, Veiga Reinaldo. "Evaluation of a permanent magnet to decrease scale formation in a tube." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10210/5793.

Full text
Abstract:
M.Ing.
Fouling and more specifically scaling is one of the most discussed and not yet well understood problems facing engineers. Scale formation which has enormous economic and environmental consequences does not only influence heat transfer characteristics and pressure drop through tubes, but influence the volumetric flow rate as well. To solve this problem Physical Water Treatment (PWT) devices have been developed which reportedly reduce scale formation. The efficiency of PWT devices is a controversial subject and many contradictions exits in the claimed effect. Researchers have been trying to prove the efficiency of PWT devices but in most cases the results are typically characterised by low reproducibility. An experimental measuring technique is thus required to measure scale formation and the influence PWT devices has on scaling. This technique must also produce reproducible results to clarify the questions surrounding PWT devices. This thesis is an experimental investigation in which an experimental setup and measuring technique is developed. It is used to evaluate a permanent magnet for the decrease of scale formation in tubes. The volumetric flow rate is used as the indicator of scale formation, which relies on the basic principle that the friction pressure drop increases if scaling takes place. The volumetric flow rate is monitored by measuring the time necessary to fill a container of known volume. The test section consists of three soft drawn copper tubes in which water with a velocity of ± 2 m/s flows. One of the tubes is used to evaluate the PWT device and the other two tubes are used as a control. The water temperature is kept at 53°C. The experiments are done in five phases in which the PWT device is placed onto one of the tubes in phase four and removed in phase five. It follows from the results obtained that a very sensitive experimental setup was designed and built which can be used to evaluate the efficiency of PWT devices. It follows from the variation in time necessary to fill the container in phase four and five that a clear conclusion can not be made. More experiments must be done in which reproducible results are obtained.

Abstract:
The focus of this thesis is on end-to-end (e2e) queueing performance evaluation and resource allocation in order to improve the performance of the relay-enhanced cellular networks. It is crucial to study both the performance of the data link layer and the physical layer issues. Therefore, we first consider end-to-end queueing performance evaluation and after that to consider physical layer issues, we present power allocation schemes, relay load balancing and relay assignment. First, we presented a framework for the link-level end-to-end queueing performance evaluation. Our system model consists of a base station, a relay, and multiple users. The e2e system is modeled as a probabilistic tandem of two finite queues. Using the decomposed model, radio link-level performance measures such as e2e packet loss rate, e2e delay and throughput are obtained analytically and compared with simulation results. A framework for power allocation for downlink transmissions in decode-and-forward relay networks is investigated. We consider a system with a single base station communicating with multiple users assisted by multiple relays. The relays have limited power which must be divided among the users they support in order to maximize the data rate of the whole network. Based on knapsack problem, the optimal power allocation is proposed. To consider fairness, weighted-based scheme is presented. Moreover, to utilize the power wisely, an efficient power reallocation scheme is proposed. Simulation results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed schemes. By applying the relay selection scheme, it may happen that some relays have more users connected to them than other relays, which results in having unbalanced load among the relays. In order to address this issue, a game theoretic approach is presented. Coalition formation game is proposed based on merge-and-split rule to form the optimal structure. The simulation results demonstrate the effect of applying game in proposed problem. Finally, the relay assignment procedure is studied. The optimal solution is found using Lagrangian Relaxation. Then, a lighter algorithm is proposed to efficiently carry out the relay assignment. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can achieve near optimal data rate, while it decreases the processing time significantly.

Jivaketu, Pattarasak. "An evaluation of teacher development in using technology during the first decade of Thai education reform 1999-2009." Thesis, 2015. https://hdl.handle.net/2144/15197.

Abstract:
This study is a historical analysis of teacher development for using instructional technology in Thailand beginning with the early origins of educational reform efforts through the National Education Reform Act of B.E. 2542 (1999) and for one decade of its implementation (1999-2009). Data sources for this study included both primary and secondary sources. These sources were historical records, government documents, newspaper and magazine articles, and scholarly books and articles. They were analyzed to determine which policies, proposals, and plans related to teacher development in using instructional technology and which of them promoted a constructivist or student-centered teaching environment. The findings indicated that many of the proposed reforms led to new instructional techniques that challenged the previous Thai education system, which had relied on a teacher-centered, top-down approach. Despite many government-sponsored teacher trainings, teachers were still uncomfortable with teaching in a student-centered environment. This study also focused on Thai methods of teacher training and identified problems with the quality of training courses, with the methods of training, with the effectiveness of the courses teachers were taught, and with the assessment of the follow-up and evaluation provided after a given course or workshop. The evidence showed that teachers resisted many aspects of the new approach. This dissertation proposes ways to help teachers out of their reluctance and resistance to reforms using instructional technology. This dissertation provides a number of recommendations to help Thai educators begin to use modern instructional technology. Among these are included a call for greater improvement of teacher education and the adoption of new concepts of teaching and learning to elevate the skill level of Thai teachers. Chief among these was treating Thai teachers as adult learners so that they would take responsibility for their development according to their specific learning needs and teaching situation. Thus, this dissertation provides a historical, methodological, and pedagogical approach to the issue of Thai teacher development in using instructional technology in a constructivist learning environment.

Krishnan, Akhilesh. "Evaluation of a Training Program (STRAP) Designed to Decrease Young Drivers Secondary Task Engagement in High Risk Scenarios." 2015. https://scholarworks.umass.edu/masters_theses_2/280.

Full text
Abstract:
Distracted driving involving secondary tasks is known to lead to an increased likelihood of being involved in motor vehicle crashes. Some secondary tasks are unnecessary and should never be performed. But other secondary tasks, e.g., operating the defroster, are critical to safe driving. Ideally, the driver should schedule when to perform the critical tasks such that the likelihood of a hazard materializing is relatively small during the performance of the secondary task. The current study evaluates a training program -- STRAP (Secondary Task Regulatory & Anticipatory Program) -- which is designed to make drivers aware of latent hazards in the hope that they regulate engagement in secondary tasks which they are performing at the time the latent hazard appears. The secondary tasks include both tasks that require drivers to take their eyes off the road (e.g., operating the defroster) and those which do not (e.g., cell phone use). Participants were assigned either to STRAP or placebo training. After training, the groups navigated eight different scenarios on a driving simulator and were instructed to engage during the drive in as many secondary tasks as possible as long as they felt safe to do so. Secondary task engagement was fully user paced. It is important to note that drivers receiving STRAP training were never instructed directly to either disengage from or not engage in secondary tasks when encountering latent hazards. The results show that STRAP trained drivers were more likely to detect latent hazards and associated clues than placebo trained drivers. With regards to secondary task engagement, STRAP trained drivers chose to limit their in-vehicle and cell phone task engagement by focusing on the forward roadway rather than the task at hand. STRAP training holds out the promise of providing individuals with the necessary skills and proactive awareness to make safe decisions regarding the non-performance or interruption of a secondary task in the presence of a potential latent hazard.

Objective: To understand what knowledge oral health care providers have to prevent and detect plaque-induced gingivitis. Methods: A questionnaire was developed with 16 multiple-choice questions and checkboxes answers, which was sent by email to all professionals responsible for school health in the Northern Region of Portugal. Results: Among 66 professionals responsible for the school health area of the northern region of Portugal, 30 answers (45.5%) were obtained. It was verified that, in the northern region, the promotion of oral health at school is carried out mainly by nurses. The study shows a lack of preparation from nurses relatively to the prevention of plaque-induced gingivitis. There is a possible lack of knowledge about the causal factor of the disease as well as its possible progression to periodontitis. Failure to prepare parents, educators and children for gingival inflammation symptoms and lack of knowledge of the advantages of using interdental brush and chlorhexidine-based mouthwash solutions are reported. Conclusion: The study shows the need for greater communication between dentists and nurses. It is necessary to prepare the latter in relation to the etiology of the disease, consequences of its progression, associated systemic diseases and appropriate oral hygiene techniques. It is important to train nurses so that they can instruct teachers, parents and children to acquire simple knowledge to prevent and detect gingivitis.

Baloyi, Hlengani Goldwin. "Learner performance disparities between former white and former black schools in Gauteng Province of South Africa after more than a decade of democracy." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10539/9829.

Abstract:
A Five-pillar conceptual framework -good social environment, focused instruction, well-trained and regularly supervised teachers, family background and language of learning and teaching- is used in this dissertation as a theoretical construct through which to make sense of persistent learner performance disparities between former white and former black schools in the South African public education system. This is a largely qualitative research project which employs a case study approach within a study area comprised of four purposive sample schools. The study is exploratory in nature in that it seeks to investigate why former white schools continue to perform better than former black schools despite massive educational changes made since 1994. I argue in this dissertation that teaching and learning processes between former white and former black schools are still fraught with huge inequalities, hence learner performance disparities. In other words, despite the investment, inputs and strategies since 1994, the education system in historically black schools is not working largely because of issues of classroom practice. A multi-method approach for data collection purposes was used in this study: testing, interviews, observations, intensive literature review and documentary analysis. Learner focus groups, maths teachers, teacher union representatives and school principals formed the backbone of research respondents in this project. The results show immense and unrelenting prevalence of inequalities and variations between former white and former black schools in terms of almost all aspects of teaching and learning processes. The essence of the results is that for the South African education system to achieve equitable learner performance across all schools, it must first achieve equity in terms of teaching and learning processes and needs.

Nikjah, Reza. "Performance evaluation and protocol design of fixed-rate and rateless coded relaying networks." Phd thesis, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10048/1674.

Full text
Abstract:
The importance of cooperative relaying communication in substituting for, or complementing, multiantenna systems is described, and a brief literature review is presented. Amplify-and-forward (AF) and decode-and-forward (DF) relaying are investigated and compared for a dual-hop relay channel. The optimal strategy, source and relay optimal power allocation, and maximum cooperative gain are determined for the relay channel. It is shown that while DF relaying is preferable to AF relaying for strong source-relay links, AF relaying leads to more gain for strong source-destination or relay-destination links. Superimposed and selection AF relaying are investigated for multirelay, dual-hop relaying. Selection AF relaying is shown to be globally strictly outage suboptimal. A necessary condition for the selection AF outage optimality, and an upper bound on the probability of this optimality are obtained. A near-optimal power allocation scheme is derived for superimposed AF relaying. The maximum instantaneous rates, outage probabilities, and average capacities of multirelay, dual-hop relaying schemes are obtained for superimposed, selection, and orthogonal DF relaying, each with parallel channel cooperation (PCC) or repetition-based cooperation (RC). It is observed that the PCC over RC gain can be as much as 4 dB for the outage probabilities and 8.5 dB for the average capacities. Increasing the number of relays deteriorates the capacity performance of orthogonal relaying, but improves the performances of the other schemes. The application of rateless codes to DF relaying networks is studied by investigating three single-relay protocols, one of which is new, and three novel, low complexity multirelay protocols for dual-hop networks. The maximum rate and minimum energy per bit and per symbol are derived for the single-relay protocols under a peak power and an average power constraint. The long-term average rate and energy per bit, and relay-to-source usage ratio (RSUR), a new performance measure, are evaluated for the single-relay and multirelay protocols. The new single-relay protocol is the most energy efficient single-relay scheme in most cases. All the multirelay protocols exhibit near-optimal rate performances, but are vastly different in the RSUR. Several future research directions for fixed-rate and rateless coded cooperative systems, and frameworks for comparing these systems, are suggested.
