AbstractWe present the first results of an extensive study of the stellar content and the ionized gas structure for a sample of BCGs. Deep broad (BVRI Johnson) and narrow (Hα) CCD images have been obtained for about 25 galaxies. For a subset of objects, selected on the basis of their apparent structure, long-slit spectroscopy has also been obtained in order to investigate the interaction between the underlying stellar population and the ionized gas.

Fg 1 (He 2–66) is a southern planetary nebula that presents an elliptical shape. Deep CCD imaging and long-slit spectroscopy have been obtained at Las Campanas Observatory of this object. The images were obtained in the light of Hα+[NII], [SII] λλ6716,6731, HeII λ4686 and in the broad-band Rgunn filter. The spectra were obtained oriented N-S, P.A. 90°, and P.A. 85°. The instrumental combination yields a spectral resolution of ∼ 2 Å FWHM, covering a spectral range ≃ λλ 6290–6805 Å.

AbstractUGC 12281 has been classified as having a pure disk and being a low surface brightness galaxy (LSBG), thus being an obvious member of the so-called superthin galaxies. At the same time it represents an extremely untypical type of LSBG due to its remarkable amount of current star formation and evidence for extraplanar ionized gas. This makes it become a perfect tool to investigate the triggering of star formation in LSB galaxies, located in an alleged isolated area. By means of deep photometry and long-slit spectroscopy we analyse the Hα halo and verify the existence of a potential dwar

Deep CCD imaging of HH 34 in H∝ shows that the HH-object has a bow shock-like structure, of which the wings can be traced over about 1 arcmin ( pc). A knotty jet is pointing towards the apex of the bow shock structure. Long-slit spectroscopy reveals that 1) the jet has approximately a constant radial velocity and electron density. 2). The spectrum of the jet is of a much lower excitation than that of HH 34. 3) HH 34 has a complex velocity and line excitation structure. The extended bow shock is interpreted by a jet of which the working surface is propagating with high velocity (≈ 200 km/s) thr

The Keck II Deep Imaging Multi-Object Spectrograph (DEIMOS) is a general purpose, faint object, multi-slit, double-beam spectrograph which offers wide spectral coverage, high spectral resolution, high throughput, and long slit length on the sky. This powerful instrument will be the principal optical spectrograph on the Keck II telescope. DEIMOS is optimized for faint-object spectroscopy of individual point sources, low-surface-brightness extended objects, or widely distributed samples of faint objects on the sky. The Virgo Environmental Survey Tracing Ionised Gas Emission (VESTIGE) is a blind narrow-band Hα + [NII] imaging survey carried out with MegaCam at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. During pilot observations taken in the spring of 2016 we observed NGC 4330, an intermediate mass (M* ≃ 109.8 M⊙) edge-on star forming spiral currently falling into the core of the Virgo cluster. While previous Hα observations showed a clumpy complex of ionised gas knots outside the galaxy disc, new deep observations revealed a low surface brightness ~10 kpc tail exhibiting a peculiar filamentary structure. AbstractWe present preliminary results of Hα near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy of 16 galaxies with redshifts in the range 0.8 ≤ z ≤ 1.0 drawn from the DEEP2 Galaxy Redshift Survey. The spectra were taken using the multi-slit mode of LIRIS (Long-slit Intermediate Resolution Infrared Spectrograph), installed at the 4.2-m WHT. Twelve out of 16 spectra yield robust (>5σ) Hα detections. We compare star formation rates (SFRs) from Hα luminosities to those derived from DEEP2 rest-frame UV measurements. This study is part of a larger program to obtain accurate Hα luminosities of about 50 star-formin

In order to study the putative enrichment within a PN, we have undertaken deep long-slit spectroscopic observations of selected targets in which we expected to find clear evidence of abundance gradients. The targets include NGC 3242: one of the PNs studied by Balick et al. (1994) in which they report N/H enhancements of ∼ 5 in each FLIER; M1-18, M1-8, M3-3, NGC 6537 and Hubble 5. The observations were obtained at the 5-m Hale Telescope of the Palomar Observatory.

Abstract:
Dark matter is now accepted as an integral part of our universe, and galaxy dynamics have long provided the most convincing observational evidence for dark matter. Spiral galaxies have traditionally been used for these studies because of their more simple kinematics, however elliptical galaxies need to be understood as well. In this dissertation I present deep long-slit spectroscopy from the University of Texas’ Hobby-Eberly Telescope for a sample of elliptical galaxies. For a subsample of galaxies I fit axisymmetric orbit-superposition models with a range of dark halo density profiles. I find
