Abstract:
In two studies we aimed at developing the Attitude towards Italian Mafias Scale (AIMS). In study 1 (N = 292) we used an Exploratory Factor Analysis to reduce the number of the items and explore their latent constructs. In study 2 (N = 393) we performed a Confirmatory Factor Analysis on the resulting 18-item questionnaire, whose latent structure was best identified by a general factor Mafia Attitude and three specific factors related to Behaviors, Cognitions and Emotions-Cognitions towards mafias. Moreover, we showed that the AIMS has (i) discriminant validity compared to a measure of attitudes towards crime, (ii) predictive validity of donation behavior to an association against mafias, (iii) internal consistency, and (iv) invariance for people of the five deep-rooted mafia regions of Southern Italy and those from the rest of Italy. Finally, we observed a difference between the participants from the five deep-rooted mafia regions (i.e., Apulia, Basilicata, Calabria, Campania, Sicily) and the rest of Italy, with the former having surprisingly more negative attitudes towards mafias compared to the latter. The AIMS might help to reliably survey people’s sentiment towards Italian mafias and promote targeted and effective law-related education interventions.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT - The study and knowledge of diseases affecting wild species has become increasingly more important, not only for maintaining a good health status of these populations but also for their zoonotic potential. The research was composed by monitoring the deer (n = 17) and wild boars (n = 9) hunting and faeces sampling collecting of red deer populations (n = 1), fallow deer (n = 7) and wild boar (n = 3) during the period of one year. In the hunted animals was performed a collection of ectoparasites and gastrointestinal, pulmonary and liver endoparasites, as well as coprology. In populations Willis flotation, McMaster and faecal cultures for gastrointestinal nematodes, simple sedimentation and modified McMaster to Fasciola hepatica, fecal smears for Cryptosporidium in cervids and Baerman for determination of lung nematodes were conducted. The species detected in hunted deer were Oesophagostomum venulosum (12,5%) and Oe. radiatum (6,25%), Spiculoteragia asymmetrica (11,76%), S. mathevossiani (5,88%), Spiculopteragia spp. (5,88%), Fasciola hepatica (76,47%) and Ixodes ricinus (88,24%). The species detected in hunted wild boars were Ascarops strongylina (22,22%), Oesophagostomum spp. (12,5%), Metastrongylus spp. (11,11%), M. pudendotectus (11,11%), M. salmi (44,44%), M. elongatus (11,11%), Fasciola hepatica (55,56%), Hyalomma lusitanicum (77,78%) and Rhipicephalus sanguineus (11,11%). In the red deer were collected two specimens of Trichuris spp. In faecal analysis the presence of gastrointestinal nematode in all populations was confirmed; however there was not an evidence of an annual dynamic for egg shedding excretion as found in domestic animals. In fallow deer, the Baerman test detected L1 of Dictyocaulus, Protostrongylus and Muellerius in all populations except G3 where were identified only the last two mentioned genus. The last genus was reported for the first time in fallow deer in Europe. In wild boars eggs with L1 larvae of Metastrongylus were observed. Cryptosporidium was positive in only two population samples (2,5% os total samples) being one of red deer and the other of fallow deer revealing a very sharp decrease since the previous study conducted in the Tapada Nacional de Mafra (TNM) by Bruno de Sousa in 2001. Fasciola hepatica remains the biggest health concern in the TNM ungulates, because it is present in all populations, however having greater relevance in fallow deer. The combination of simple sedimentation technique with the modified McMaster helped in better diagnosis of Fasciola hepatica, and allowed a better quantification of the egg shedding.

Abstract:
In this work we study the behavior of excavated small-diameter props to the executed compression in sedimentary soil at the Experimental testing site of Geotechnical Engineering at UFSM(CEEG/UFSM). In geotechnical engineering the projects of superficial and deep foundations are limited by the load capacity and by the permissible stress. In the region of Saint Maria geotechnical workmanships and the projects of foundations present an eminently empirical character. Therefore, the research developed at the CEEG/UFSM comes to supply this deficiency of the regional knowledge, by means of studies and research destined to the forecast of the behavior of various foundations of current use in the region. The CEEG has already implemented this with the preliminary inquiries of the subsoil investigation, characterization and geotechnical assays already carried out by Emmer (2004). The current phase consists of the project and execution of foundations that will undergo behavior verification. For such six props of 0,20m of diameter with changeable depths going from 3.0 to 5.3 meters had been executed and submitted to static load tests with slow loads where different criteria of arched interpretation had been applied to the load-displacement curve to define rupture. The estimates of bearing capacity are obtained by means of correlation methods with standard penetration tests (SPT) and by theoretical methods, being these forecasts later compared with the loads of rupture gotten in the assays and interpreted according to the Brazilian Norm. The comparison between the results of the load tests and the values of load capacity calculated by the studied methods, show that, for the props situated in the sandy-clay layer, these methods underestimate the values of the total load capacity and overestimate the values of the total load capacity for the piles supported over sandy layer.

Smith, Yvonne Joy. "Brightness Under Our Shoes: the Redress of the Poetic Imagination in the Poetry and Prose of David Malouf, 1960-1982." University of Sydney, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/5139.

Full text
Abstract:
Doctor of Philosophy(PhD)
This study investigates the poetic foundation of David Malouf’s poetry and prose published from 1960 to 1982. Its purpose is to extend reading strategies so that the nature of his poetic and its formative influence are more fully appreciated. Its thesis is that Malouf explores and tests with increasing confidence and daring a poetic imagination that he believes must meet the demands of the times. Malouf’s work is placed in relation to Wallace Stevens’ belief that the poetic imagination should “push back against the pressure of reality”, a view discussed by Seamus Heaney in “The Redress of Poetry”. The surprise of the poetic as “unpredicted aesthetic value” (García-Berrio, 1989) is significant to his purposes and techniques, as it creates idea-images and feeling-values (Jung, 1921) that bring together apparently opposite ways of knowing the world. In seeking to represent the meeting of inner and outer perceptions, Malouf’s work shows the influence not only of Stevens but also Rilke and contemporary American poetry of “deep image”. The Australian context of Malouf’s work is considered in relation to Judith Wright’s essay “The Writer and the Crisis” and the poetry of Malouf’s contemporaries. Details of the manuscript development of his first four novels show Malouf’s steps towards a clearer representation of his holistic, post-romantic vision. His correspondence with the poet Judith Rodriguez provides useful insights into his purposes. Theories and research about brain functions, the nature of intelligence and learning provide an important international context in the 1960s and 1970s, given Malouf’s interest in how meaning forms from perception and experience. Jean Piaget’s view of intelligence and David Kolb’s theory of experiential learning (1984) offer frameworks for reading Malouf that have not yet been considered. The thesis offers a model of poetic learning that highlights the interplay of dialectically opposed ways of forming meaning and points to the importance for Malouf of holding diverse states of mind together through the poetic imaginary.

Abstract:
In this chapter, I enter into a conversation with Rainer Maria Rilke, a German poet born in 1875. Using Rilke’s advice to Kappus and Rilke’s very personal reflections on his own writing processes as basis, I reflect on my own history of writing, my processes, and my discomfort with feelings of self-doubt when comparing myself with my peers, or worst still, when I am compared to my peers. And while I embrace this inner compulsion to write, this exhilaration and joy to be curious and reflect, the total madness of researcher rankings and quantification of outputs compels me to listen to Rilke, go deep inside me and discover that I have no choice, I must write. Like Rilke, I see my writings as “beloved possessions,” making audience responses and critical reviews a dark trap; and on the other hand, confirmations that I do get it right, sometimes. Being in conversation with Rilke allowed me to confront my demons and embrace the darkness that has become a companion; and to be in awe of life and death, and the greatness and splendour of both.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses three concepts: separatism, organized crime, and the relation between the two. It begins by drawing on social scientific insights to dispel some common misconceptions about, in turn, separatist movements and mafias. By bridging two compartmentalized subfields, one discovers just how natural the connections between them are. Organized crime scholarship typically neglects separatist cases altogether or confounds them with nonseparatist ones. Yet today's globalized mafias have deep structural reasons to flourish, especially in torn states. Organized crime is notoriously embedded in extant community relations: patriarchal, occupational, residential, and above all, ethnic. The chapter then delineates two tools — a Simmelian triadic model of state-separatist-mafia relations, and typology of mafias across three regions — for explaining the phenomenon.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the historical context and dynamics of religious stigmatization, focusing on events involving Alevis in Turkey. It begins with the 1996 Susurluk traffic accident, which exposed a corrupt network involving politicians, security forces, and mafia during a counterinsurgency campaign against the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). The government's dismissive response to civil society protests using the derogatory “snuffing out candles” smear reflects deep-rooted historical stigmatization of Alevis, which dates back to Ottoman times. The chapter argues that the stigmatization of Alevis was pivotal in later violent episodes, where ordinary people participated in mass violence against Alevis. It critiques scholarly and public discourse for hesitancy in attributing ordinary Sunni Muslims' roles in the massacres and highlights the enduring appeal and centrality of religious mobilization in fomenting communal violence.

This chapter recounts how Lydia Maria Child had taken Amelia Norman to her home to live with her as an intimate of her family after she won the trial. It notes how Lydia kept track of Amelia during the months that she lived with her in the spring of 1844, getting to know her better than she had been able to when Amelia was a prisoner at the Tombs. It also mentions Lydia's belief that Amelia's strong deep feelings were what drove her to the verge of madness. The chapter refers to Maria Lowell, wife of poet and diplomat James Russell Lowell, to whom Lydia recommended Norman for a job as a personal maid. It highlights Lydia's publication of “Letter from New York No. V” while Amelia was living with her, which was a jeremiad against the failure of the law to protect women and the men who made the law.

Abstract:
The shoshonitic-type rocks are scarce in volcanic arcs (<3 vol.%), typically associated with mafic volcanism, and both suites are commonly connected to extensional tectonics and deep lithospheric magmatic source zones. The Michoacán Guanajuato Volcanic Field (MGVF), located at the central sector of the Transmexican Volcanic Belt (TMVB), has over 1400 volcanoes, mainly mafic-andesitic calc-alkaline type. Through a holistic approach, including morphostructural, volcano morphometry, petrography, geochemistry and geochronology data, this work presents a detailed study of Cahulote Graben (CG) in the Jorullo-Tacámbaro volcanic region. We have divided the CG into three morphostructural domains containing 116 volcanoes of several types. Morphostructural domains were developed by the interaction of four extensional and transtensional brittle deformation systems: NE-SW, NW-SE, E-W and NNW-SSE. CG is an extensional-transtensional NE-SW tectonic system. Three magmatic calc-alkaline,shoshonitic and intra-plate-like plumbing systems were arranged during the Quaternary (<2 Ma). Petrographic, major and trace elements support relatively fast ascent and different stages of magma stagnation from deep reservoirs. Comparison of Zr/Al and Ti/Al ratios and Nd–Sr isotopic signatures of CG shoshonites with others reported in the TMVB supports the hypothesis of the contrasting depth of source magmas and strongly suggests an extensive tectonic regime for these shoshonites. A volcanotectonic model is proposed to explain the emplacement mechanism of shoshonitic magmatism.

Abstract:
Late Precambrian mafic rocks form dike swarms of various directions up to 200-300 km long and several tens of km wide on the Anabar Shield. According to U-Pb dating data, three main directions of dike belts of different ages were identified: the Chieress swarm of a northwestern direction with an age of 1385 Ma: Kuonamka swarm of sublatitudinal dikes - 1500 Ma and north-northwestern dikes of the East Anabar swarm - 1774-1750 Ma. In terms of geochemical features, the Anabar Precambrian mafic rocks correspond to intraplate basalts. In the dolerites of the Kengede and East Anabar belts, manifestations with disseminated veinlet and nodular sulfide Cu-Ni mineralization were established. The main minerals in sulfide ore occurrences are pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite; pentlandite, siegenite, gersdorffite, galena, sphalerite and other small unidentified phases are less common. Also found are segregations consisting of close intergrowths of many melted amoeboid titanomagnetite individuals, which are associated with drop-shaped pyrrhotite and prismatic apatite crystals. Rounded formations of sulfide nodules indicate their segregation nature, when, already at the early magmatic stage, a sulfide melt enriched in Cu and Ni is separated from the sulfur-saturated mafic magma. The presence in mafic rocks of apatite-sulfide-magnetite segregations with melted rounded forms of sulfides and magnetite also indicates the segregation nature of the separation of highly phosphate sulfide-oxide liquids. Thus, with the differentiation of large volumes of Precambrian mafic melts in deep intermediate chambers, magmatic PGE-Au-Cu-Ni sulfide and phosphate-iron phoscorite deposits can be formed. Such deposits are one of the potential sources of areal complex placers in the Leno-Anabar province.

Abstract:
The article concerns the last phase of poetic production of father David Maria Turoldo, notably the last collection published when he was still alive – the Final Chants. In his very long work or religious poet, liturgist, and essayist, he treated a number of topics, incl. social themes and current affairs. In his last phase of his poetic, he doesn’t speak to the society, to the poor, and to marginalised people like in the past, but he addresses God directly – by forming an intense dialogue with the Absolute. In this poetical and mystical dialogue, he interrogates God about the most impenetrable mysteries for human understanding. These mysteries overwhelmed theologians and mystics of all times. Here, we shall focus notably on the topic of God being far from His creation – which is manifested through the divine silence. God seems not to hear the invocations of the faithful; it looks as though He doesn’t care about the problem of suffering (especially of the weakest persons) that remains apparently unrelieved by divine intervention. We shall present some meaningful short examples of such deep and complex issues, in order to introduce the reader to the knowledge of the peculiar Turoldian approach, by providing a possible interpretative key.

Abstract:
Introduction: Parkinson’s disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease, its prevalence increases exponentially with age, generating a series of physical, cognitive and emotional non-motor symptoms that disrupt functionality and interfere with quality of life. Surgical treatment with a deep brain stimulator (DBS) implant is an established method for treating these patients. Objectives: To describe the complications in DBS surgery for Parkinson’s. Methods: A literature review was performed using the SciELO, MEDLINE/ PubMed, Virtual Health Library and LILACS platforms, with the descriptors: “Parkinson”, “Deep brain stimulation”, “Subthalamic nucleus” and “surgery”. and “complicações” in Portuguese and English, in the last five years. In the end, 11 articles entered the review. Results: Motor impairment in activities of daily living has been described as post-surgical complications, even if it is minor compared to psychobehavioral manifestations. With regard to the most reported psychiatric symptoms, impulsivity, delirium, mania, depressive states, aggression, hallucinations and delusions, were the complications found after DBS implementation. Decline in verbal fluency and postoperative confusion were evidenced in several studies. Conclusion: Deep brain stimulation for Parkinson’s disease is an established advanced therapy that addresses motor symptoms and improves quality of life, however, it has been associated with numerous neuropsychiatric symptoms, these symptoms can be distressing, requiring intervention psychiatric. In short, the studies found in the selected articles indicate that it is necessary to direct and reprogram the devices to reduce the postoperative neuropsychiatric impairment, thus allowing the anticipation and prevention of these neuropsychiatric complications, improving the safety and tolerability of these patients.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: Long-term deep sequestration of CO2-rich brine in deep formations of ultramafic rock (e.g. Oman serpentinized harzburgite) will be feasible only if a network of hydraulic cracks could be produced and made to grow for years and decades. Fraccing of gas- or oil-bearing shales has a similar objective. The following points are planned to be made in the presentation in Golden. 1) A branching of fracture can be analyzed only if the fracture is modeled by a band with triaxial tensorial damage, for which the new smooth Lagrangian crack band model is effective. 2) To achieve a progressive growth of the fracture network one will need to manipulate the osmotic pressure gradients by changing alkali metal ion concentration in pore fluid. 3) A standardized experimental framework to measure rock permeability at various ion concentrations and various osmotic pressure gradients is needed, and will be presented. 1 INTRODUCTION Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by human activities is the largest contributor to global warming; therefore, effective carbon sequestration technologies attract great amount of interest. One emerging and promising technology for storing CO2 in the subsurface permanently is through carbon mineralization in mafic and ultramafic rock (Kelemen and Matter, 2008). Despite the abundance of these types of rock in the Earth's upper crust (Matter et al., 2016), the rate of this process in nature is too slow to reduce CO2 emissions effectively (Seifritz, 1990). One of the key challenges to achieve a sustainable and large-scale storage of CO2 by mineralization is to engineer a progressive growth of a fracture network conveying water with dissolved CO2 to reach a gradually increasing volume of the mafic rock formation. The CO2 rich water often cannot penetrate the tight matrix of silica-rich serpentinized harzburgites because under high concentrations of CO2, the wetting angle of CO2 -bearing water-rock-rock interface exceeds the critical value of 60 degrees. Therefore, the presence of a family of cracks is the only means by which CO2 -bearing fluids can interact with matrix of ultramafic rock (Bruce Watson and Brenan, 1987). Lateral fracture branching from a major fracture provides a sustainable fluid pathway and therefore is essential for continued rock-water geochemical reactions that lead to mineralization of carbonate minerals. Realistic computational modeling of hydraulic fractures in peridotite or basalt must involve lateral fracture branching and account for stress distribution changes between solid and fluid phases under constant tectonic stress, triggered by pore exposure to fluid pressure in hydraulic cracks.

Abstract:
This article summarized the exploration ideas and methods for a closer look at the Mesozoic hydrocarbon potential in the Banggai Basin, offshore Matindok, Eastern Arm of Sulawesi. The area is one of the Pertamina EP’s working area which located in the frontier basin that has an acreage exceeding 10,000 sqkm. A major portion of the Mesozoic play in the basin is still under explored, whilst/whereas the existence of an active Cenozoic petroleum system in the offshore Matindok has been confirmed by Tiaka Producing Field. The main challenge in exploring the Mesozoic section in the Matindok Block is imaging it below the ophiolite complex / ultra-mafic layer of the Batui thrust, as well as the thick Neogene carbonate. These barriers inhibit the penetration of seismic energy that resulted in low-quality seismic data beneath the thrust. In order to generate its play concept, massive exploration efforts have been conducted in the Matindok Block since 2017. It consists of onshore geological fieldwork, high-resolution satellite data processing, and the new acquisition of shallow-marine transition 2D seismic data. Potential mature source rocks of the Triassic Tokala marine shale was found in the outcrops nearby the Batui thrust. In the seismic interpretation, the equivalent Jurassic to Cretaceous outcrops that dominated by the fluvio-deltaic sandstones, have been interpreted as pinched-out features along the margin of half graben structures. This area was compressed during the Late Miocene to Plio-Pleistocene shortening events, and intensively imbricated the Cenozoic to present-day sediments on the Batui thrust, but put the Paleozoic - Mesozoic half-grabens beneath the Batui thrust decollement. Finally, the finding of this study is able to demonstrate the petroleum-system risks assessment of the Mesozoic hydrocarbon potential.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT One way to mitigate global warming is to withdraw CO2 from the atmosphere and inject it into deep formations of porous basalt to form carbonate minerals that can bind large quantities of CO2. Such formations are found in many places in the world. The process is to some extent similar to frac. It requires hydraulic fracturing of the basalt to create a sufficient crack surface area needed for penetration of CO2 into basalt. The success further depends on the permeability of basalt, possibly assisted or hindered by gradients of osmotic pressure due to gradients of concentration of sodium and other ions. These diffusion and osmotic effects generally decay with the square of spacing of adjacent parallel cracks. Poromechanical effects such as the gradual transfer of tectonic stress from the fluid phase to the solid phase in the basalt enter the picture, too. An analytical continuum model of the combined interacting effects of fracturing, diffusion, osmosis, poromechanics and crystal growth under stress is a big challenge. The purpose of the conference presentation is to briefly review ways to model these problems physically and computationally and to point out the diverse obstacles faced by the new multi-university-lab project. HISTORICAL LESSON Many of the challenges of the Center for Interacting Geoprocesses in Mineral Carbon Storage, a newly funded EFRC collaborative, multi-university-lab project of University of Minnesota, Northwestern University, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), University of Southampton and Georgia Tech, are similar to those of the 1970s project Hot-Dry-Rock Geothermal Energy project funded by RANN (Research Applied to National Needs, 1974-78), The RANN project involved six mechanics faculty members at Northwestern (led by Johannes Weertmann), three senior researchers at LANL (LASL at that time) and a drilling team (the total cost was about $30 million in today's dollars). Unfortunately, the conclusion of that project came out to be negative but the US is currently investing in this concept (now called Enhanced Geothermal Systems or EGS), most prominently at the Frontier Observatory for Research in Geothermal Energy or FORGE in Utah, inspired by successes in Europe at Soultz-sous-Forêts and Rittershoffen Geothermal Plants. In any case, the lessons are today valuable for deep CO2 sequestration (Kelemen & Matter, 2008), as well as for frac (hydraulic fracturing, or fracking) of gas or oil shale (Z. P. Bažant et al., 2014; Rahimi-Aghdam et al., 2019). Modern frac technology, with horizontal drilling and sand proppants, is applied at FORGE. The objective of the EFRC is to use fracture mechanics to enhance the mineralization of injected CO2 in mafic (basalt) and ultramafic (peridotite) rocks. As with EGS and shale gas, these rocks are relatively impermeable and success will require hydraulic fracturing and the development of a dense fracture network that exposes abundant fracture surface area for chemical reactions.

Abstract:
Aeromagnetic and ground gravity data for the Canadian Superior Province, filtered to extract long wavelength components and converted to pseudo-gravity, highlight deep, N-S trending regional-scale, rectilinear faults and margins to discrete, competent mafic or felsic granulite blocks (i.e. at high angles to most regional mapped structures and sub-province boundaries) with little to no surface expression that are spatially associated with lode ('orogenic') Au and Ni-Cu-PGE-Cr occurrences. Statistical and machine learning analysis of the Red Lake-Stormy Lake region in the W Superior Province confirms visual inspection for a greater correlation between Au deposits and these deep N-S structures than with mapped surface to upper crustal, generally E-W trending, faults and shear zones. Porphyry Au, Ni, Mo and U-Th showings are also located above these deep transverse faults. Several well defined concentric circular to elliptical structures identified in the Oxford Stull and Island Lake domains along the S boundary of the N Superior proto-craton, intersected by N- to NNW striking extensional fractures and/or faults that transect the W Superior Province, again with little to no direct surface or upper crustal expression, are spatially associated with magmatic Ni-Cu-PGE-Cr and related mineralization and Au occurrences. The McFaulds Lake greenstone belt, aka. 'Ring of Fire', constitutes only a small, crescent-shaped belt within one of these concentric features above which 2736-2733 Ma mafic-ultramafic intrusions bodies were intruded. The Big Trout Lake igneous complex that hosts Cr-Pt-Pd-Rh mineralization west of the Ring of Fire lies within a smaller concentrically ringed feature at depth and, near the Ontario-Manitoba border, the Lingman Lake Au deposit, numerous Au occurrences and minor Ni showings, are similarly located on concentric structures. Preliminary magnetotelluric (MT) interpretations suggest that these concentric structures appear to also have an expression in the subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) and that lithospheric mantle resistivity features trend N-S as well as E-W. With diameters between ca. 90 km to 185 km, elliptical structures are similar in size and internal geometry to coronae on Venus which geomorphological, radar, and gravity interpretations suggest formed above mantle upwellings. Emplacement of mafic-ultramafic bodies hosting Ni-Cr-PGE mineralization along these ringlike structures at their intersection with coeval deep transverse, ca. N-S faults (viz. phi structures), along with their location along the margin to the N Superior proto-craton, are consistent with secondary mantle upwellings portrayed in numerical models of a mantle plume beneath a craton with a deep lithospheric keel within a regional N-S compressional regime. Early, regional ca. N-S faults in the W Superior were reactivated as dilatational antithetic (secondary Riedel/R') sinistral shears during dextral transpression and as extensional fractures and/or normal faults during N-S shortening. The Kapuskasing structural zone or uplift likely represents Proterozoic reactivation of a similar deep transverse structure. Preservation of discrete faults in the deep crust beneath zones of distributed Neoarchean dextral transcurrent to transpressional shear zones in the present-day upper crust suggests a 'millefeuille' lithospheric strength profile, with competent SCLM, mid- to deep, and upper crustal layers. Mechanically strong deep crustal felsic and mafic granulite layers are attributed to dehydration and melt extraction. Intra-crustal decoupling along a ductile décollement in the W Superior led to the preservation of early-formed deep structures that acted as conduits for magma transport into the overlying crust and focussed hydrothermal fluid flow during regional deformation. Increase in the thickness of semi-brittle layers in the lower crust during regional metamorphism would result in an increase in fracturing and faulting in the lower crust, facilitating hydrothermal and carbonic fluid flow in pathways linking SCLM to the upper crust, a factor explaining the late timing for most orogenic Au. Results provide an important new dataset for regional prospectively mapping, especially with machine learning, and exploration targeting for Au and Ni-Cr-Cu-PGE mineralization. Results also furnish evidence for parautochthonous development of the S Superior Province during plume-related rifting and cannot be explained by conventional subduction and arc-accretion models.

Abstract:
A complete suite of bulk major- and trace-elements measurements combined with macroscopic/microscopic observations and mineralogy guided by scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM-EDS) analyses were applied on Nekuashu (2.55 Ga) and Pelland (2.32 Ga) intrusions in northern Canada, near the Strange Lake rare earth elements (REE) deposit, to evaluate their magmatic evolution and possible relations to the Mesoproterozoic Strange Lake Peralkaline Complex (SLPC). These Neoarchean to earliest-Paleoproterozoic intrusions, part of the Core Zone in southeastern Churchill Province, comprise mainly hypersolvus suites, including hornblendite, gabbro, monzogabbro/monzodiorite, monzonite, syenite/augite-syenite, granodiorite, and mafic diabase/dyke. However, the linkage of the suites and their petrogenesis are poorly understood. Geochemical evidence suggests a combination of 'intra-crustal multi-stage differentiation', mainly controlled by fractional crystallization (to generate mafic to felsic suites), and 'accumulation' (to form hornblendite suite) was involved in the evolution history of this system. Our model proposes that hornblendite and mafic to felsic intrusive rocks of both intrusions share a similar basaltic parent magma, generated from melting of a hydrous metasomatized mantle source that triggered an initial REE and incompatible element enrichment that prepared the ground for the subsequent enrichment in the SLPC. Geochemical signature of the hornblendite suite is consistent with a cumulate origin and its formation during the early stages of the magma evolution, however, the remaining suites were mainly controlled by 'continued fractional crystallization' processes, producing more evolved suites: gabbronorite/hornblende-gabbro ? monzogabbro/monzodiorite ? monzonite ? syenite/augite-syenite. In this proposed model, the hydrous mantle-derived basaltic magma was partly solidified to form the mafic suites (gabbronorite/hornblende-gabbro) by early-stage plagioclase-pyroxene-amphibole fractionation in the deep crust while settling of the early crystallized hornblende (+pyroxene) led to the formation of the hornblendite cumulates. The subsequent fractionation of plagioclase, pyroxene, and amphibole from the residual melt produced the more intermediate suites of monzogabbro/monzodiorite. The evolved magma ascended upward into the shallow crust to form monzonite by K-feldspar fractionation. The residual melt then intruded at shallower depth to form syenite/augite-syenite with abundant microcline crystals. The granodiorite suite was probably generated from lower crustal melts associated with the mafic end members. Later mafic diabase/dykes were likely generated by further partial melting of the same source at depth that were injected into the other suites.

Abstract:
Seton Lake is a freshwater fiord located in southwestern British Columbia, roughly 4 km west of Lillooet and 250 km north-northeast of Vancouver. Located in the Coast Mountains, it is an alpine lake about 22-km long and roughly 1-1.5 km wide. It is separated from nearby Anderson Lake, located to the west, by a large pre-historic rock avalanche deposit at Seton Portage. The lake stands at about 243 m above sea level and is up to about 150 m deep (BC gov., 1953). Water level is controlled by a hydroelectric dam (i.e., Seton dam) located at the eastern end of the lake. Here, the lake drains east into Seton Canal, a 5 km diversion of the flow of the Seton River, which begins at the Seton dam. The Seton Canal pushes water to the Seton Powerhouse, a hydroelectric generating station at the Fraser River, just south of the community of Sekw'el'was and confluence of the Seton River, which drains into the Fraser River at Lillooet. Seton Portage, Shalatlh, South Shalatlh, Tsal'alh (Shalath), Sekw'el'was (Cayoosh Creek), and T'it'q'et (Lillooet) are communities that surround the lake. Surrounded by mountainous terrain, the lake is flanked at mid-slope by glacial and colluvial sediments deposited during the last glacial and deglacial periods (Clague, 1989; Jakob, 2018). The bedrock consists mainly of mafic to ultramafic volcanic rocks with minor carbonate and argillite from the Carboniferous to Middle Jurassic periods (Journeay and Monger, 1994). As part of the Public Safety Geoscience Program at the Geological Survey of Canada (Natural Resources Canada), our goal is to provide baseline geoscience information to nearby communities, stakeholders and decision-makers. Our objective was to see what kind of sediments were deposited and specifically if we could identify underwater landslide deposits. Thus, we surveyed the lake using a Pinger SBP sub bottom profiler made by Knudsen Engineering Ltd., with dual 3.5 / 200 kHz transducers mounted to a small boat (see photo). This instrument transmits sound energy down through the water column that reflects off the lake bottom surface and underlying sediment layers. At the lake surface, the reflected sound energy is received by the profiler, recorded on a laptop computer, and integrated with GPS data. These data are processed to generate a two-dimensional image (or profile) showing the character of the lake bottom and underlying sediments along the route that the boat passed over. Our survey in 2022 recorded 98 profiles along Seton Lake. The red transect lines show the locations of the 20 profiles displayed on the poster. The types of sediments observed are mostly fine-grained glaciolacustrine sediments that are horizontally bedded with a subtle transition between glaciolacustrine to lacustrine (e.g., profiles A-A'; C-C'; F-F'; S-S'). Profile S-S' displays this transition zone. The glaciolacustrine sediments probably were deposited as the Cordilleran Ice Sheet retreated from the local area (~13,000-11,000 years ago; Clague, 2017) and the lacustrine sediments, after the ice receded to present-day conditions. Some of the parallel reflections are interrupted, suggesting abrupt sedimentation by deposits that are not horizontally bedded; these are interpreted as landslide deposits (see pink or blue deposits on profiles). The deposits that show disturbance in the sedimentation found within the horizontal beds are thought to be older landslides (e.g., blue arrows/deposits in profiles C-C'; E-E'; F-F'; G-G'; I-I'; J-J'; K-K'; N-N'; P-P'; Q-Q'; R-R'; T-T'; U-U'), but the ones that are found on top of the horizontally laminated sediments (red arrows/pink deposits), and close to the lake wall, are interpreted to be younger (e.g., profiles B-B'; C-C'; H-H'; K-K'; M-M'; O-O'; P-P'; Q-Q'). At the fan delta just west of Seton dam, where there was no acoustic signal penetration, it is interpreted that the delta failed and brought down coarser deposits at the bottom of the lake (e.g., profiles H-H'; M-M'; and perhaps K-K'). However, these could be glacial deposits, bedrock, or other coarser deposits. Some of the deposits that reflect poor penetration of the acoustic signal, below the glaciolacustrine sediments, could represent glacial deposits, old landslide deposits, or perhaps the presence of gas (orange arrows; e.g, B-B'; D-D'; J-J'; O-O', T-T'). The preliminary results from sub bottom profiling reveal that there are underwater landslides deposits of widely varying ages buried in the bottom of the lake. However, the exact timing of these is not known. Hence our preliminary survey gives an overview of the distribution of landslides where there seems to be a larger number of landslides recorded in the narrower eastern portion of the lake.
