Abstract:
AbstractSince the second half of the twentieth century, globalization has transformed archaeology into a ‘geoculture’ (using Wallerstein’s words) defined by the increasing circulation of ideas within a worldwide scientific community. This change has not only affected the ways in which new paradigms and methods are transmitted, but it has also significantly broadened the geographical boundaries of archaeological research. The example of Palaeolithic rock art can be used to illustrate the various dimensions of this transformation. In Europe, Pleistocene cave art was considered a phenomenon with a ‘core’ firmly embedded in the Franco-Cantabrian region and a ‘periphery’ which included some neighbouring areas, such as Southern Spain and Italy. Despite some discoveries in Russia (1957) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (1973), this reductionist view remained unchallenged until the beginning of the twenty-first century. Non-European sites were often disregarded and reduced to the status of ‘outliers’ in relation to the central core area, resulting in the limitation, rather than invigoration, of research in these regions. However, the new millennium has witnessed a significant increase in the number of European countries with well-dated Paleolithic cave art sites, including the United Kingdom and Romania, among others. Nevertheless, the greatest shifts in the field of rock art studies globally have emerged during the last decade with: (1) the discovery of Paleolithic rock art in locations very distant from the traditional European ‘core’ (e.g., Australia and Indonesia), and (2) the development of systematic archaeological rock art surveys in areas outside of the ‘periphery’ (e.g., Southeast Europe). Today, it is evident that Paleolithic rock art is a widespread global phenomenon. Despite this, a vast majority of teams and specialists are still focused on the Franco-Cantabrian region, and they seldomly develop research in ‘new’ territories. Hence, globalization has led to an increasing awareness of the ‘Franco-Cantabrian bias,’ but has archaeological research changed accordingly?

Abstract:
On the middle terrace, the Communal building was half-buried in a circular pit with a diameter of 10 m (St 10), vertically cut 1.5 m deep on the north and 0.5 m deep on the south. The circle was indented to the northeast by a 3-m-wide entrance. Around the periphery, the floor rose about 70 cm, forming a low amphitheatre opening towards the entrance. It was surrounded by a thin cob wall set in a 30-cm-deep and -wide foundation trench, leaning against the vertical St 10 limits. The light roof was supported in the south by a peristyle of pairs of posts located 50-70 cm inside the perimeter wall, and in the north by two to four earthen pillars, in addition to the central post. The architectural model was determined by the N-S terrace slope and by the NE orientation of the entrance, opposite the prevailing winds. During the first phase (“Building 1”), there were earth benches along the north and probably also along the south sections of the perimeter wall. Several pits, a hearth and remarkable object caches were found in the central part, suggesting artisanal, ritual and storage activities. The St 10 fill revealed the superimposition of four successive Communal buildings separated by partial demolition phases, always following the same plan, except for a marked reduction of the entrance breadth between phases 1 and 2. These buildings share many characteristics with the Southwest Asian PPNA communal buildings, especially with those of the northern Levant. However, they are also more structurally fragile, which can be explained by the importance accorded to the ritual of destruction/reconstruction. This gave rise to building with lighter materials in order to save effort in both construction and demolition.

The Italian geologist Antonio Stoppani is a remarkable but little known figure in the history of science and the theoretical humanities. Recently, following debates about the Anthropo-cene initiated by the Dutch chemist Paul Crutzen, some scholars have returned to Stoppani’s writing for its eloquent argument regarding the appearance of human activity in the archive of deep time—the earth. Born in Lecco in 1824, the young Stoppani studied to become a priest of the order of the Rosminiani, and was ordained in 1848. In the same year, Stoppani partici-pated in the resistance during the Cinque giornate di Milano (Siege of Milan), where he both fought on the barricades and, fantastically, invented and fabricated aerostats that were used to communicate with the periphery and the provinces, sending revolutionary messages to the countryside from inside a barricaded Milano. In this endeavor, he was helped by the typographer Vincenzo Guglielmini, who worked with Stoppani to ensure that the aerostat balloons would travel from the Seminario Maggiore di Porta Orientale over the walls erected around the city (and the Austrians trying to shoot them from the sky) to encourage Italians to revolt against the Austrian Empire.

Abstract:
Abstract The effectiveness of cathodic protection on the exterior bottoms of aboveground storage tanks is best measured with permanent zinc or copper-copper sulfate reference electrodes placed under the tank bottom. The use of these electrodes is preferable to measurements taken at the periphery of the tank since peripheral measurements do not reflect the potentials deep under the tank. The asphalt storage tanks were maintained at a temperature of about 350F (175C) to keep the asphalt in a liquid state. The temperature of the soil at electrode depth was about 300F (150C), too hot for the use o

Abstract:
Abstract A close coupled mixed metal oxide (MMO) anode, grid or concentric ring, cathodic protection (CP) system is a state-of-the-art technique for corrosion prevention of the soil-side bottom of an aboveground storage tank (AST) resting on sand pads. The regulatory requirement of secondary containment for ASTs, especially with the use of polyethylene liners, has eliminated the use of traditional shallow anodes around the periphery or the deep well anode systems. Recent experiences with close coupled CP systems have shown that adequate corrosion protection is not achieved for ASTs and are sub

Abstract The corrosion behavior of X65 pipeline steel in solutions containing carbon dioxide (CO2), acetic acid (CH3COOH, abbreviated HAc) and 0.1-0.3 % sodium chloride (NaCl) was investigated on rotating cylinder specimens in glass cells. The tests were carried out at 25 °C (1 bar CO2) and 80 °C (0.5 bar CO2). The initial concentration of HAc was varied between 0 and 600 ppm (0-10 mM). The ferrous ion (Fe2+) concentration was in most of the tests held far below the iron carbonate (FeCO3) saturation limit. The electrode rotation rate was 1900 RPM, corresponding to ca. 1 m/s peripheral velocity

Review question / Objective: The purpose of this review is to determine the efficacy and safety of acupuncture on diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) pain compared with analgesics or sham acupuncture.Randomized controlled trials are the only types of studies included in this review. Condition being studied: Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is a common complication of type 1 and 2 diabetes. It is also the main cause of lower limb amputation and disability in patients with diabetes. Epidemiological evidence shows that up to 50% of patients with diabetes developed neuropathy during their lon
