Abstract:
The article is devoted to the little-known literary work of the American cartoonist Jay Norwood Darling. The current study was conducted on the travelogues “Ding Goes to Russia” (1932) and “The Cruise of the Bouncing Betsy. A Trailer Travelogue” (1937). This article aims to reveal and contextualize the features of J.N. Darling’s travel texts as peripheral genres. The main objective of this work is to analyze the deep structures of the travelogues chronotope, based on which the hypothesis will be put forward. Its essence is that the intensity of the crisis time experience in different spaces and through these spaces modifies the involved genre clichés, giving rise to a tragic (for Soviet space) and optimistic (for American space) premonition. The research methodology is based on the study of the interaction between the centre and periphery of the literary system, in particular, the concept of “semiosphere” formulated by Yu. Lotman. Genre analysis includes comparative and contextual methods of studying texts. The cultural-historical method deepens the understanding of the context of Darling’s literary work. Particularly, it is used to discover the historical and social factors that impact the peculiarities of others and one’s own world perception and image reconstruction. Genre analysis of travelogues with various graphic components, including caricatures, involves an intermedia method of studying the semantic connections between visual and verbal in travelogues. The examination of Darling’s travelogues “Ding Goes to Russia” and “The Cruise of the Bouncing Betsy. A Trailer Travelogue”, which inherited different genre traditions, revealed their conceptual and poetic affinities. In both texts, the author investigates the common issues of civilization and its advancement, as well as the significance of technological progress for a human being. The features of the unmanifested future or hidden phenomena of the present are felt more strongly at a distance from the centre, at the intersection of transit paths. Geography in these travels is perceived through anthropological optics, implemented, among other things, through the concepts of the mutual influence of society and space in an unstable world. The experience of alienation is constructed through images of places displayed identically in both travelogues. In Darling’s travelogues, places outside of symbolic meaning come to the fore of the spatio-temporal structure. According to the concept of M. Auger, their features can be attributed to non-places. The key features of the chronotope of both travelogues are the peripheralization of space, the transformation of places into space, and the related process, the representation of non-places. The caricaturists’ texts exhibit genre peripherality through the dual nature of their poetic codes. Behind the secondary nature of the genre constructions of both texts, one cannot help but see individual searches reflected in the unique role and methods of spatial metaphors and imaginary topoi explication. Their semantic and visual density force us to recall and re-estimate the factual writing of the cartoonist in the context of future genre development.

Abstract:
AIM: To observe and compare the statistical significance of superficial and deep vascular leakage in the pathological changes of the diabetic rats retina after the Evans blue (EB) perfusion, and utilize the modified whole-retina spreading method to make the slides while protecting the periphery of the retina. METHODS: The Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were randomly divided into 6 groups. Each group named as the normal groups for 4, 8, and 12wk and the diabetic groups for 4, 8, and 12wk. The EB was injected into the cardiovascular system of the rats at the different time points. The retina of each group was obtained for observation. RESULTS: The superficial vascular leakage was found in all 6 groups. The size of leakage area of superficial retinal blood vessels was (0.54±0.23)%, (0.65±0.11)%, and (0.58±0.10)% in normal group. No notable leakage was found in the deep blood vessels [(0.03±0.04)%, (0.03±0.05)%, and (0.03±0.05)%]. The deep retinal vascular leakage was found in the peripheral retina of diabetic rats. The size of leakage area of superficial retinal blood vessels in diabetic group were (0.53±0.22)%, (0.69±0.16)%, and (0.52±0.11)%. The leakage areas of deep blood vessels were (0.54±0.50)%, (1.42±0.16)%, and (1.80±0.07)% at 4, 8, and 12wk, respectively. There was a statistically difference of the leakage area between the 8th week and the 4th week of diabetes group (P=0.003). The statistically significant difference between the diabetes and the control groups was noted at 4wk and 8wk (P<0.001). CONCLUSION: The main retinal pathological changes of early-stage diabetic rats are the vascular leakage of the periphery of deep retina. Diabetic rats modeled after 8wk have semi-quantitative statistical difference compared with the normal rats, thus early intervention treatment research can start at this time point.

Abstract:
Deep-sea colonial Scleractinia (Anthozoa: Hexacorallia) are indicator species of vulnerable marine ecosystems known as deep-sea coral reefs. The number of species of deep-sea community-forming colonial Scleractinia is small and specimens of good preservation, especially those collected in a live state, can be easily identified to the species level. Identification of fragments, especially those of the basal part of colonies, can be difficult. We have shown that X-ray examination can effectively distinguish colony fragments of the widespread deep-sea community-forming scleractinian corals Desmophyllum pertusum and Solenosmilia variabilis (Caryophylliidae). The skeleton of S. variabilis is considerably denser and less X-ray permeable compared to D. pertusum. The calyx cavities of the corallites of S. variabilis are visible only at the periphery of the fragment and practically do not extend to the outside. In D. pertusum, the cavities of the corallites can be deeply traced in the fragment body, they have a conical shape and considerably expand to the periphery. The proposed method of identification is inexpensive, does not require special sample preparation, and allows rapid identification of bulk material.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the consideration of center-periphery relations at the present stage and in historical retrospect. It is shown that modernization in non-Western regions was carried out in the process of one-sided pro-Western-oriented globalization, the growing desire of the West, the Center to dominate over the periphery and semi-periphery. It is found that this aspiration has deep historical, economic, political and civilizational roots. The mutual conflict between Russia and Ukraine in February 2022, largely inspired by the West, led to a cardinal aggravation and reformatting in the international space. An important place in the analysis of these issues is occupied by tracing the trend towards shaping polycentrism, equality of national and civilizational communities, and democratism in the world order.

Summary The results of radiography and ultrasonography were compared on 56 horses and cows with lower respiratory tract disease. Ultrasonography was more sensitive than radiography for the detection of small pleural effusions and consolidations in large animals. The side of the thorax affected and the character of the pleural fluid and lung in large animals with pleural effusion can be evaluated ultrasonographically. The periphery of the lung must be affected to characterize pulmonary lesions ultrasonographically. Radiography is the best technique to characterize lesions deep within the lung when the periphery of the lung is normal.

Abstract:
A possible explanation for the difficulties encountered in curing deep fibrin-embedded infections is that antibiotic diffusion inside the infected fibrin matrix is not homogeneous and is insufficient to neutralize the pathogen. To evaluate this conjecture, the differential pharmacodynamics of daptomycin in fibrin clots infected with methicillin-susceptible and -resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis was estimated. Daptomycin (20 or 50 mg/kg of body weight) was infused over 30 min. Fibrin clots and blood samples were evaluated from 0.5 to 42 h after the injections. The half-lives of daptomycin in serum and fibrin clot were close to identical after the two doses and averaged 5.4 and 22 h, respectively. The mean areas under the concentration-time curves from 0 to 42 h (AUC0-infinity) for daptomycin concentrations in serum and infected clots were 575 +/- 36.7 and 215 +/- 6.2 micrograms/g/h after administration of 20 mg/kg and 1,089 +/- 39.9 and 326 +/- 16.8 micrograms/g/h after administration of 50 mg/kg. A concentration gradient from the periphery to the core of the clots was observed in many clots up to 18 h after treatment. Mean peak concentrations in the core of the clots reached 60% of the peripheral values (P &lt; 0.05) and were delayed for at least 3 h compared with the peripheral peak concentrations. AUC0-42 h of daptomycin concentration in the periphery and the core of clots were significantly different (P &lt; 0.01). Survival of microorganisms was better in the core than in the periphery, with as much as a 3 log10 CFU/g difference between the center and the surface of the clot. Bacterial examination by transmission electron microscopy also showed noticeable differences in ultrastructural changes between those in the periphery and those in the core of the clots. In conclusion, the pharmacokinetics of daptomycin are significantly different at the periphery and within the core of fibrin clots, which may have led to the higher bacterial survival in the core of clots. Limited diffusion of daptomycin in fibrin, an essential component of the vegetation in bacterial endocarditis, could explain at least in part some of the treatment failures.

Abstract:
Aim. To reveal the deep meanings of the ethnonymous adjective russisch, which are not recorded in modern German lexicographic sources as separate meanings.Methodology. The five most authoritative authentic definition dictionaries of the German language served as the material for the study. To analyze the linguistic material, the method of componentanalysis was used, which was combined with the method of determining qualia structures (agentive, constitutive, formal and telic).Results. The revealed values of the qualia structure are divided into nuclear, subnuclear and peripheral. The meaning represented in all five dictionaries form the core. It has been established that nuclear semes implement only agentive attributes of objects. The subnuclear zone includes formal and constitutive meanings. Meanings with no correspondences in dictionary definitions that were identified during the analysis of the dictionary entries examples form the periphery of the field of lexicographic meanings of an ethnonymous adjective. Such meanings are manifested by the telic attributes of the qualia structure.Research implications. The developed method for revealing deep meanings, taking into account the qualia structure, will help reveal the hidden meanings of words that are based on stereotypical perceptions of recipients and are not recorded in modern lexicographic sources.

Abstract:
The diversity of organisms inhabiting deep-sea ecosystems, such as seamounts, has hitherto remained under-studied. In this study, we report on the faunal diversity in the water column adjacent to the summit and periphery of two seamounts (SMS2 and SMS3) and an oxygen minimum zone site located away from the seamounts in the southeast Arabian Sea. Environmental DNA (eDNA) in the water column was metabarcoded using the Cytochrome Oxidase C subunit I (COI) gene marker and Oxford Nanopore sequencing technology. Hydrographic conditions revealed that the summits of the seamounts intersect with the core oxygen minimum zone between depths of 300 and 600 m. Comparisons of COI gene sequences with those in available databases, MIDORI and BOLD, indicated the existence of a diverse group of novel organisms in the study area. Crustaceans dominated (75–95%) in the summit and periphery of the SMS2 and the OMZ site, while Cnidaria (56–63%) and Chordata (55%), respectively, dominated the summit and periphery of SMS3. Overall, the current study highlights the broad diversity of organisms living in the water column around the seamounts and underscores the potential of eDNA for exploring them.

Abstract:
In most species, survival relies on the hypothalamic control of endocrine axes that regulate critical functions such as reproduction, growth, and metabolism. For decades, the complexity and inaccessibility of the hypothalamic–pituitary axis has prevented researchers from elucidating the relationship between the activity of endocrine hypothalamic neurons and pituitary hormone secretion. Indeed, the study of central control of endocrine function has been largely dominated by ‘traditional’ techniques that consist of studying in vitro or ex vivo isolated cell types without taking into account the complexity of regulatory mechanisms at the level of the brain, pituitary and periphery. Nowadays, by exploiting modern neuronal transfection and imaging techniques, it is possible to study hypothalamic neuron activity in situ, in real time, and in conscious animals. Deep-brain imaging of calcium activity can be performed through gradient-index lenses that are chronically implanted and offer a ‘window into the brain’ to image multiple neurons at single-cell resolution. With this review, we aim to highlight deep-brain imaging techniques that enable the study of neuroendocrine neurons in awake animals whilst maintaining the integrity of regulatory loops between the brain, pituitary and peripheral glands. Furthermore, to assist researchers in setting up these techniques, we discuss the equipment required and include a practical step-by-step guide to performing these deep-brain imaging studies.

Abstract:
In grinding process, a stiff air layer is generated around the wheel periphery due to high surface speed of the porous grinding wheel. This stiff air layer restricts grinding fluid to reach deep inside the grinding zone. The formation of stiff air layer has been studied experimentally by obtaining the variation of air pressure around the wheel periphery under different wheel speeds. With the help of the experimental data, a mathematical model has been developed to predict the pressure of the stiff layer of air under different wheel speed. From the model it is found that at close proximity to the wheel, air pressure obtained is very high, and this establishes quantitatively the formation of stiff air layer around the grinding wheel.

Abstract:
Noninvasive in situ temperature measurement (thermometry) is an attractive means of mapping the region of thermal damage during thermal ablation treatments. Existing methods of ultrasound thermometry are ineffective beyond 50 °C due to multiple physical limitations, including a non-monotonic relationship between temperature and sound speed that reaches a plateau around 60 °C, tissue phase transitions and deformation. An ultrasound-based technology that can monitor treatment over the entire therapeutic temperature range is desirable clinically. This paper describes a deep learning-based approach that uses thermometry data from the periphery of the heating zone (where temperatures are less than 50 °C) to infer temperature throughout the treatment zone. Spatiotemporal 2D temperature maps from 3–12 s HIFU heating exposures (in 0.5 s increments) were generated (using COMSOL) with a subset used for training the network and the rest for testing. Peripheral temperature values (excluding the first 5 mm closest to the axial focus), scalar time values, and a binary flag indicating heating/cooling were inputs to the network, and the temperature profile axially through the HIFU focus was predicted. The temperature prediction accuracy was better than 0.5 °C during heating and cooling. This paper will also address robustness to noise in the input temperature measurements and discuss future directions including experiments with ultrasound backscatter data and strategies to explicitly incorporate heat diffusion physics into the learning paradigm.

Abstract:
For Ireland – along with Spain, Portugal and Greece – membership of ‘Europe’ was seen as an opportunity to escape their historical legacy of ‘underdevelopment’ and become fully integrated into core positions in the global system. Each of these states, and especially Ireland experienced significant growth in the European Union but once the global financial crisis struck, they suffered a deep economic and social crisis, and came to be categorised once again as ‘peripheral’ to Europe. This acute recurrence of a core-periphery divide in the European Union has been accompanied by a rapid diminution of democracy in the EU and its transformation into an increasingly coercive formation. The deprivation programmes imposed by the EU on the peripheral societies has not only damaged growth in the European economy, they have hugely diminished the legitimacy of the European integration project. The essay explores the roots of Europe’s changing power structures and assesses the implications of the Eurozone crisis for the future of the European integration project.

Abstract:
Modulation of lymphocyte flow in the lymphatic compartment of the lymph node may serve, in part, to promote lymphocyte sensitization during an antigenic challenge. This study was undertaken to show where this might occur by examining the structural relationships of the intranodal lymphatic pathways, blood vessels, and connective tissue support with respect to lymphocyte and lymph flow. Differently stained plastic resins were injected into the blood vessels and lymphatics of the submandibular lymph node and visualized with a confocal laser scanning microscope. The specimens were corroded to study the three-dimensional cast structures by scanning electron microscopy. Alkali digestion was also used to prepare the reticular fiber network in the lymph node for scanning electron microscopic examination. At the hilus of the node, two to three arteries gave off arterioles running in medullary cords towards the cortex. The medullary cords, the periphery of the deep cortex, and the perifollicular zones had dense capillary networks. In contrast, the center of the follicle and the center of the deep cortex were less highly vascularized. High-endothelial venules were restricted to the perifollicular zone and the periphery of the deep cortex. At the cortico-medullary boundary, they abruptly transformed into medullary venules with a normal endothelium. The marginal sinus of the lymph node was crossed by thick reticular fibers that arose from the inner sheets of the capsule. The lymph pathway went through the marginal sinus, into the trabecular sinus, to the cortical perifollicular sinus, the dense lymphatic sinus around the deep cortex, and finally into the medullary sinus. At present, the exact functional significance of the complex lymph node lymphatic architecture is not clear. However, the highly organized structural organization may play a significant role in regulating and directing lymphocyte flow to facilitate antigen presentation.

Abstract:
The central part of Gdansk Deep experienced summer-autumn dissolved oxygen minima within 2021–2023, while along the periphery of the Deep no seasonality was detected. Intrusions of transformed North Sea waters with a low oxygen content can partially aerate the bottom layer and cause anoxic waters to detach from the bottom. In the near-slope southeastern part of the Deep, in autumn-winter storm conditions, amplitude vertical fluctuations in oxygen concentration can occur – from the rise of hypoxic waters above the halocline, to the complete elimination of hypoxia as a result of near-slope downwelling, which acts as an “oxygen pump”. The hydrological and hydrochemical characteristics of intrusions of transformed North Sea waters penetrating into the Gdansk Basin and influencing the dynamics of the nepheloid layer of biogeochemical origin, arising at the boundary of oxidizing and reducing conditions, have been clarified.

Abstract:
Ullrich congenital muscular dystrophy (UCMD) is a severe form of muscular dystrophy caused by the loss of function of collagen VI, a critical component of the muscle-tendon matrix. Magnetic resonance imaging of UCMD patients’ muscles shows a peculiar rim of abnormal signal at the periphery of each muscle, and a relative sparing of the internal part. The mechanism/s involved in the early fat substitution of muscle fiber at the periphery of muscles remain elusive. We studied a muscle biopsy of the rectus femoris/deep fascia (DF) of a 3-year-old UCMD patient, with a homozygous mutation in the COL6A2 gene. By immunohistochemical and ultrastructural analysis, we found a marked fatty infiltration at the interface of the muscle with the epimysium/DF and an atrophic phenotype, primarily in fast-twitch fibers, which has never been reported before. An unexpected finding was the widespread increase of interstitial cells with long cytoplasmic processes, consistent with the telocyte phenotype. Our study documents for the first time in a muscle biopsy the peculiar pattern of outside-in muscle degeneration followed by fat substitution as already shown by muscle imaging, and an increase of telocytes in the interstitium of the deep fascia, which highlights a potential involvement of this structure in the pathogenesis of UCMD.

Abstract:
Regardless of the direction of development and changes in the energy sector, the Worlds economies will rely primarily on natural resources for at least the next 20 years and very likely beyond. Actually, the resources of hydrocarbons in place in comparison with consumption are almost inexhaustible, so the question is only in the cost of production. For this reason, the exploration for new commercial fields that can withstand price volatility over a long period of time will play a critical role. At the same time, one of the most promising areas is the exploration of the new super-deep (more than 6000 m.) oil and gas accumulations.&#x0D; The information presently accumulated by geologists allows a high probability of finding profitable reserves, including liquid hydrocarbons, in ultra-deep horizons that were previously considered non-perspective due to extremely adverse thermobaric conditions. Commercial oil and gas potential of various sedimentary formations in such conditions is established for more than 70 basins around the world. There are large and giant gas, gas condensate, oil and mixed phase-heterogeneous fields, of which more than 1,200 are already being developed. Over the past 10 years, the most significant success has been achieved in the Gulf of Mexico (USA, Mexico), the Tarim and Sichuan basins (China), the South Caspian basin (Azerbaijan, Russia and Kazakhstan), the Santos basin (Brazil), and the Arab basin (Middle East). More than 120 hydrocarbon fields were discovered and most of them have yet to prove their commerciality.&#x0D; Pre Caspian basin is one of the most prospective regions, where deep horizons are poorly explored. For a better understanding of its potential, statistics on 106 clastic and 36 carbonate fields was collected, and 22 Paleozoic basins were considered as analogs. Data from 15084 documents with varying degrees of significance was taken into consideration; and elements of Artificial Intelligence (AI) processing were applied. Their simultaneous interactive analysis allowed to identify several possible analogues for Pre-Caspian basin and to justify the exceptionally high perspectives of its ultra-deep horizons.&#x0D; Many analysts identify three strategic directions for EP activities. The first type includes new perspective horizons in new basins, the second direction is associated with new reservoirs in already known oil and gas basins, and the last, third type includes prospects in already known productive sections of previously explored basins. Pre Caspian basin to some extent, corresponds to all three groups, but mainly to the second and third. Main interest is associated with well-studied Devonian reservoirs on the periphery, rapidly dropping towards the center of the basin, or with almost unexplored to date lower Paleozoic horizons. This article opens a series of publications devoted to the topic of discovery and development of ultra-deep hydrocarbons.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT The peripheral areas of deep-sea hydrothermal vents are often inhabited by an assemblage of animals distinct to those living close to vent chimneys. For many such taxa, it is considered that peak abundances in the vent periphery relate to the availability of hard substrate as well as the increased concentrations of organic matter generated at vents, compared to background areas. However, the peripheries of vents are less well-studied than the assemblages of vent-endemic taxa, and the mechanisms through which peripheral fauna may benefit from vent environments are generally unknown. Understanding this is crucial for evaluating the sphere of influence of hydrothermal vents and managing the impacts of future human activity within these environments, as well as offering insights into the processes of metazoan adaptation to vents. In this study, we explored the evolutionary histories, microbiomes and nutritional sources of two distantly-related sponge types living at the periphery of active hydrothermal vents in two different geological settings (<em>Cladorhiza</em>&nbsp;from the E2 vent site on the East Scotia Ridge, Southern Ocean, and&nbsp;<em>Spinularia</em>&nbsp;from the Endeavour vent site on the Juan de Fuca Ridge, North-East Pacific) to examine their relationship to nearby venting. Our results uncovered a close sister relationship between the majority of our E2&nbsp;<em>Cladorhiza</em>&nbsp;specimens and the species&nbsp;<em>Cladorhiza methanophila</em>, known to harbor and obtain nutrition from methanotrophic symbionts at cold seeps. Our microbiome analyses demonstrated that both E2&nbsp;<em>Cladorhiza</em>&nbsp;and Endeavour&nbsp;<em>Spinularia</em>&nbsp;sp. are associated with putative chemosynthetic Gammaproteobacteria, including Thioglobaceae (present in both sponge types) and Methylomonaceae (present in&nbsp;<em>Spinularia</em>&nbsp;sp.). These bacteria are closely related to chemoautotrophic symbionts of bathymodiolin mussels. Both vent-peripheral sponges demonstrate carbon and nitrogen isotopic signatures consistent with contributions to nutrition from chemosynthesis. This study expands the number of known associations between metazoans and potentially chemosynthetic Gammaproteobacteria, indicating that they can be incredibly widespread and also occur away from the immediate vicinity of chemosynthetic environments in the vent-periphery, where these sponges may be adapted to benefit from dispersed vent fluids.

Abstract:
The understanding of the ways in which the pioneer of Serbian archaeology Miloje M. Vasić explained cultural changes is important for the archaeological tradition we work in. Consequently, the aim here is to detect the weak spots in the epistemological foundations of the Serbian archaeology and to enable the improvement of the conceptual tools we use. Vasić’s entire interpretive concept of the praehistoric Danubian valley periphery was constructed before the World War I, and stated that it was decisively influenced by the religious ideas from the cult centres of the Aegean, and by the direct contact with the Greek colonists as well. Searching for the explanations for the then unknown material culture of Vinča, he chose cult objects because he believed these objects preserved conservative practices and reflected conservative tendencies of communities. The conclusions founded upon cult objects Vasić transformed into generalizations related to all other phenomena. Having chosen his sample, he used specific methods for analysis of archaeological material, developing a complex mechanism to explain how in the periphery these original ideas were transformed beyond recognition. He used stylistic analysis and method of groups, proceeding to the Kopienkritik method, developed by his teacher Adolf Furtwangler. Just like written sources are valorised by their place in the chain of reproduction form the original, in the same manner certain objects represent forms whose distance from the centre can be estimated. However, Vasić further complicated his equation, by introducing at least one more force operating upon the degeneration of objects on the periphery – the influence of deep substrate levels of the peripheral cultures. This intersection of forces may be labelled as Vasić’s “law of periphery”, according to which the corruption of material culture in the periphery is influenced by the distance from the centre and the conservatism of the deeper popular layers. Although he linked this profound traditionalism of population to the survivals, in Vasić’s interpretive key these in fact represent the mutated form of the concept of survivals, borrowed from unilineal evolutionism, and are more linked to substrate, according to which continuity is supposed to be monitored, than to evolutionary phases of development. He identified this mutated concept of survivals and substrate in folk customs, the most famous being the recognition of the Dionysian ritual in the ethnographic present of his time. This manner of chronologically and spatially unlimited analogical reasoning inevitably led to erroneous interpretations, with long-lasting epistemological consequences in Serbian archaeology.

Abstract The Baiyun gold deposits in the Qingchengzi ore concentration area have significant deep exploration potential. Transient electromagnetic (TEM) exploration is conducted to identify ore-bearing strata and ore-controlling structures in the mining area’s periphery. Previous tests have revealed that it is challenging to penetrate the conductive layer to obtain deep information using a conventional in-loop TEM method with an induction coil. Field data are acquired using a high-temperature superconductor (HTS) superconductive quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometer with a fixed-loop configuration. The exploration results indicate that the SQUID TEM system can detect the distribution of ore-bearing strata, and the ore-control structures within deep formations. The paper explores two extension areas in the east and west of the Baiyun thrust nappe structural belt. The inversion results reveal that the Baiyun gold deposit is significantly compressed, with noticeable thrusts and faults. Since the thrust fault zone extends to the south stably, the lower section has a gentle dip angle favorable area for deep prospecting.

The deformation and nonlinear gradual failure characteristics of circular roadway in deep rock mass as well as the displacement and the stress variation of the key position in the periphery of the roadway were analyzed, When λ&gt;1, the plastic area was large-scale, but deflection more little , when λ&lt;1, the plastic area was little-scale, but deflection increase. The study indicates that the stress concentration occurs in the periphery of the roadway after evacuation and plastic deformation zone engenders under the persisting stress of the surrounding rock, then the cracks appears and expands continuously, the broken rock zone appears at last and the intensity of the stress concentration decreases as well as the stress field shifts beyond.

Abstract There is little data available on the zoobenthos of the Baikal region’s eastern periphery water bodies in low-water years. The taxonomic diversity of zoobenthos of the littoral zone of a deep lake (Arakhley, Transbaikalia) was studied in an extremely low-water year, 2017. The zoobenthos of the lake littoral zone was represented by 44 taxa. Chironomids accounted for 41% of the zoobenthos taxonomic diversity, 14% each – gastropods and leeches. The taxonomic diversity of the littoral zoobenthos in different parts of the lake varied from 19 to 24 taxa and averaged 22.3 ± 1.97 taxa. The relationship between taxonomic diversity and depth in Lake Arakhley is described by polynomial dependence. Deviations from the relationship identified at the periphery of vegetation thickets were due to the ecotone effect. Obtained data shows the state of zoobenthos taxonomic diversity under conditions of climate aridization and the reduction of littoral sandy habitats.

AbstractShale lithofacies identification and prediction are of great importance for the successful shale gas and oil exploration. Based on the well and seismic fine calibration, extraction, and optimization of seismic attributes, root mean square (RMS) amplitude analysis is used to predict the spatial–temporal distribution of various lithofacies in the fifth organic-matter-rich interval, and the prediction results are confirmed by the logging data and geological background. The results indicate that in the early expansion system tract, dolomitic shale and calcareous shale were widely developed and argillaceous shale, silty shale, and argillaceous siltstone only developed in the periphery of deep depression. With the lake level rising, argillaceous shale and calcareous shale were well-developed, and argillaceous shale interbedded with silty shale or argillaceous siltstone developed in deep or semi-deep lake. In the late expansion system tract, argillaceous shale was widely deposited in the deepest sag; calcareous shale presented in eastern sag with belt distribution.

Abstract:
The article provides an overview of the current situation of China’s northern periphery — the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, regarding its economic dynamics, demographic parameters and current agenda. What is new is the consideration of the “strategic positioning” approach, when the region’s mission is defined in close connection with national interests. The author reveals the essence of the “five great tasks” assigned to the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region by Xi Jinping: the creation of “two barriers”, “two bases” and “one bridgehead”. The first task — creating an “ecological barrier in the north of the country” — emphasizes the unique role of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in the national environmental protection system. The second task — ensuring a barrier of security and stability — is based on the importance of maintaining national unity and tranquility on the northern borders. The third task — creating a national base of energy and strategically important resources — is associated with advanced practices in the production and supply of electricity, as well as deep processing of rare earth metals. The fourth task is aimed at creating a base for the production of agricultural products to ensure China’s food security. And the fifth task is to build a "bridgehead for opening up to the North", stimulating close cooperation with northern neighbors. Understanding the internal processes in adjacent to Russian regions China’s Inner Mongolia is extremely important for building international ties. Particular attention should be paid to the task of "openness to the North", which is gaining new impetus with the activation of Russia's "turn to the East". The counter movement of these strategies, coupled with the Mongolian "New Revival Policy", create favorable conditions for the construction of the China-Mongolia-Russia Economic Corridor.

Abstract:
Background: Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are mesenchymal tumors and have some malignant potential. Mitotic count is important for predicting the malignant potential of GISTs. Proper treatment of GISTs requires accurate pathological diagnosis. In general, endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration and deep biopsy are used for pathological diagnosis of GIST before making decisions about surgery. This study sought to evaluate the pathological uniformity of gastric GISTs for mitotic index of the center and periphery of the GIST. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the data of 37 gastric GIST patients who underwent wedge resection at Hanyang University Hospital. We used Armed Forces Institute of Pathology criteria to classify gastric GISTs. To determine the pathological uniformity of gastric GISTs, we compared GIST risk stratification between the center and periphery of GISTs. Results: The mean size of GISTs was 3.56 ± 2.10 cm. Three lesions were located in the antrum, 11 in the fundus, 9 in the cardia, and 14 in the body. The mean age of patients was 58.65 ± 9.44 years; 18 patients were male and 19 were female. Thirty-five patients (94.6%) showed the same level of risk stratification between the center and periphery of gastric GISTs, while two patients (5.4%) presented different levels of risk between the two sites. No significant difference in mitotic count was observed between the two sites (kappa value = 0.863; p = 0.001). Conclusions: Mitotic index category (either more than five mitoses per high-power field or five or fewer mitoses per high-power field) of GISTs showed good concurrence between the center and periphery.

Abstract The hydrogeochemical and stable isotopes of water (δD and δ18O) were combined to investigate the deep groundwater recharge processes in the geologically complex intermountain basin (Kathmandu Valley). Results of the stable isotopic composition of the deep groundwater compared with global and local meteoric water lines and d-excess showed the deep groundwater as a meteoric water origin which is insignificantly affected by evaporation. The analysis suggests the deep groundwater was recharged during high rainfall periods (wet season). Additionally, the control of seasonal variation was absent in the deep groundwater and in the spring water samples. The large range of isotopic composition distribution was due to the altitude affect, whereas variations are from the various geological settings of the infiltration encountered during the recharge processes. The tri-linear diagram showed Na-K-HCO3 and Ca-Mg-HCO3 as the two major water types. The distribution of water types in this intermountain basin was found to be unique compared to other basins. Ionic concentration of the samples was found to be higher in the central part than in the periphery due to the ion exchange processes. This study determines the spatial distribution of various recharge processes that depends upon the environment during rainfall and the geological settings.

The haemodynamics of CL during natural and induced luteolysis was studied in crossbred cattle using colour Doppler ultrasonography. In natural cycle, penetration of Doppler signals deep into the CL was observed during Day 15 – 17 coinciding with the initiation of luteolysis. When PG was administered in the early luteal phase (Day 4), there was an increase in blood flow intensity in the periphery of CL, but when PG was administered in the mid luteal phase (Day 10), the intensified Doppler signals penetrated deep into the luteal parenchyma within two hours. There were no significant differences in velocity parameters and RI values between the treatment groups. Thus it was concluded that the characteristic difference in the intensity and nature of vascular perfusion was the determining factor for the initiation of luteolytic process in cattle.

Abstract:
In the current era of globalization, a paradox has developed in the field of criminology. In the context of the increasingly global nature of crime, there has been a firm recognition among criminologists of the need for comparative, transnational research; particularly that which moves beyond knowledge created in the global North. However, production of this knowledge remains clustered in a relatively narrow range of geographical sites—and understandings of crime and criminology in the South too often defined through the lens of the North. As processes of globalization confound and disrupt the traditional dualisms of East/West and North/South, there is a pressing need for an expansion of criminology’s world-map. This article explores the conceptual possibilities of one particular methodology—ethnography—as a means of explicating the deep-seated tensions, fragmented realities and hybridized identities that emerge from the margins of globalization. Drawing on cogent debates from the fields of sociology and anthropology, I argue that ethnographically informed ‘theory from the South’ can at once enrich the criminological imagination and provoke a more cosmopolitan global imaginary.

Abstract:
The activity of 132 neurons in the caudal part of the ventral posterior lateral nucleus (VPLc) of the thalamus was recorded from 23 anesthetized monkeys. All single thalamic units that could be excited by electrical search stimuli applied to the contralateral sciatic nerve were investigated. Responses of these cells to mechanical, thermal, and electrical stimuli applied in the periphery indicated that at least half of the sampled cells were nociceptive. Based on responses to graded mechanical stimuli applied to the periphery, 110 of the sampled cells that received a predominant input from cutaneous receptive fields were classified. There were 56 low-threshold, 39 wide dynamic range, and 15 high-threshold cells. The same neurons were also classified into five mechanical types based on a cluster analysis: types 1-5 contained 25, 34, 17, 10, and 24 cells, respectively. The fact that about half the population of cells belonged to either the wide dynamic or the high threshold group (or mechanical types 3-5) suggested that a large population of VPLc neurons respond to mechanical nociceptive stimuli either exclusively or preferentially. Responses of 63 thalamic neurons were tested to noxious heat pulses applied to their cutaneous receptive fields with a contact thermostimulator. Of these, 47 cells were excited, whereas only 16 cells did not respond. The peripheral nerve that innervated the receptive field of each of 82 thalamic neurons was stimulated with graded strengths to activate A fibers only or both A and C fibers. All tested cells responded to peripheral A fiber volleys. In addition, 42 of these cells responded to peripheral C fiber volleys. The C fiber responses could be either short lasting (a few hundreds of milliseconds) or long lasting (up to several seconds). The recording sites of 80 cells were reconstructed. Of these, 78 were in the VPLc nucleus and the remaining two were in the reticular nucleus of the thalamus. No obvious relationship between the response characteristics and the locations of the cells within the VPLc nucleus was found. Sampled thalamic units had a variety of sources of input from the periphery, including both cutaneous and/or deep tissue receptive fields. The majority of the cells, however, had exclusively cutaneous receptive fields. The sizes of the cutaneous receptive fields were often very small, so that nearly half (41%) of the receptive fields of cells sampled occupied an area of skin smaller than half the foot.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

Abstract:
The study is an addition to a series of articles on the results of monitoring studies on the impact of tectonic knots on the state of the environment in the region. The knots of tectonic dislocations are a link between the abiotic (geological) and biotic environments, and have a significant impact on the state of vegetation cover, both at the macro and micro levels. This article shows the regularity of the content of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) in blueberries and cowberries, depending on their spatial location within the tectonic knot. It was revealed that the concentrations of vitamin C in berries selected in the center and on the periphery of tectonic knots differ. For example, its content in blueberries from the center of the Kholmogory tectonic knot is 37% higher than in berries from the periphery of the same knot. In the fruits of blueberries from the center of the Plesetsk tectonic knot – by 59%, and in cowberries – by 62% more, compared with the periphery. In the fruits of cowberries from the center of the Velsko-Ustyansky tectonic knot – 58% more. These knots differ from each other in geomorphometric, geological, tectonic factors, etc., which allows us to conclude that deep factors influence the state of the environment in general and the concentration of vitamin C in blueberries and cowberries in particular.

Hampton's hump, also called sign, is a radiologic sign which consists of a shallow wedge-shaped opacity in the periphery of the lung with its base against the pleural surface. It is named after Aubrey Otis Hampton, who first described it in 1940. A juxtapleural pulmonary soft tissue density on a chest radiograph, convex toward the hilum, usually at the costophrenic angle; described as a manifestation of pulmonary infarction, due to pulmonary embolism. In most cases, pulmonary embolism is caused by a blood clot in the leg that breaks loose and travels to the lungs. A blood clot in a vein close to the skin is not likely to cause problems. But having blood clots in deep veins (deep vein thrombosis) can lead to pulmonary embolism. More than 300,000 people each year have deep vein thrombosis or a pulmonary embolism. Other things can block an artery, such as tumors, air bubbles, amniotic fluid, or fat that is released into the blood vessels when a bone is broken. But these are rare and uncommon.

Abstract:
Abstract The Freiberg district hosts one of the largest series of epithermal polymetallic vein deposits in Europe. The availability of a systematic collection of historical samples provides an excellent opportunity to study the anatomy of these epithermal systems. Detailed petrographic investigations, geochemical analyses, and fluid inclusion studies were conducted on several vertical profiles within the Freiberg district to decipher mineralogical and geochemical zoning patterns. Six distinctive mineral associations have been recognized within the Freiberg epithermal veins; sphalerite-pyrite-quartz and galena-quartz±carbonate associations are most abundant in the central sector, as well as in the deepest sections of veins on the periphery of the district. A high-grade sphalerite-Ag-sulfides-carbonate association occurs laterally between the central and peripheral sectors and at intermediate depth in veins on the periphery. Shallow and peripheral zones are dominated by an exceptionally Ag-rich Ag-sulfides-quartz association, whereas the shallowest veins locally comprise Ag-poor stibnite-quartz and quartz-carbonate associations. Fluid inclusion assemblages returned low salinities (&amp;lt;6.0 wt % NaCl equiv), and homogenization temperatures successively decrease from ~320°C associated with the proximal and deep sphalerite-pyrite-quartz association, to ~170°C related to the distal and shallow Ag-sulfides-quartz association. The architecture of the Freiberg district is related to the temporal and spatial evolution of magmatic-hydrothermal fluid systems, including boiling and concomitant cooling, as well as CO2 loss. Constraints on the paleodepth indicate that the veins formed between 200 and 1,800 m below the paleowater table. High-grade Ag ore occurs over a vertical interval of at least 500 m and is bracketed by shallower stibnite-quartz and barren quartz, and deeper base metal-sulfide-quartz zones.

Abstract:
Purpose is to assess changes in the stress-strain state of walls along the whole periphery of a super-deep open pit while optimizing its current and final boundaries for the complete ore excavation. Methods. Finite element 3D analysis of stress-strain state (SSS) of the soil and rock mass relies upon the models varying in their scales. Macrolevel model includes the full pit helping perform initial evaluation of its stability depending upon changes in the general wall slope along the pit periphery. Then, the macromodel is separated into sectoral models with smaller scales oriented radially in such a way to include potentially unstable wall areas. The sectoral models make it possible to show the complex bench line in more detail after the peripheries were optimized in terms of economic factor and simulate layered structure of the rock mass. Elastoplastic model of the medium as well as Mohr-Coulomb strength criterion has been implemented using RS3 (Rocscience) program codes. Findings. An indicator of wall strength (safety factor) distribution along the pit periphery has been identified; potential sliding surfaces within each of the separated open pit sectors have been localized based upon the shear strength reduction (SSR) procedure. Influence by the general wall slope as well as by the indicator of the ore excavation completeness on the stripping ratio has been demonstrated. Originality. For the first time, two-level modelling has shown difference in a safety factor depending upon a model scale and a reflection degree of the soil-rock mass structure. In the context of the actual mining and geological conditions of Kacharsky open pit, changes in the safety factor along the pit periphery have been identified depending on the general slope of the wall. Practical implications. Based upon the pit wall stability along the whole periphery, the possibility has been substantiated to optimize its design boundaries for the excavation of those amenable ore reserves, occurred near them, inclusive of ore, occurring in a bottom, which mining is impossible due to inaccessibility.

SummaryAngiopoietin-2 (Ang-2) antagonises the maturing effect of angiopoietin-1 (Ang-1) on blood vessels, and cooperates with VEGF to induce neovascularisation. In knockout mice,Ang-2 displayed a specific role in postnatal angiogenic remodelling. Here, we demonstrate that mice deficient in Ang-2 fail to form a proper spatial retinal vascular network. The retinal vasculature was characterised by reduced large vessel numbers and defects forming the superficial periphery mostly on the arteriolar site, and the secondary and tertiary deep capillary network. Hypoxia in the retinal periphery induced a four-fold VEGF upregulation and active endothelial proliferation for up to 60 days. Concomitantly, retinal digest preparations showed increased arteriolar (+33%) and capillary diameters (+90%), and fluorescein angiograms revealed leakiness of neovascular front. At one year of age, persistent preretinal vessels were non-leaky in accordance with a relative increase in the ratio of Ang-1 to VEGF.Taken together, the data suggest that Ang-2 has an important function in the spatial configuration of the three-dimensional retinal vasculature. Secondarily, prolonged VEGF activity results in a model of persistent proliferative retinopathy.

Abstract:
We discuss an attentional model for simultaneous object tracking and recognition that is driven by gaze data. Motivated by theories of perception, the model consists of two interacting pathways, identity and control, intended to mirror the what and where pathways in neuroscience models. The identity pathway models object appearance and performs classification using deep (factored)-restricted Boltzmann machines. At each point in time, the observations consist of foveated images, with decaying resolution toward the periphery of the gaze. The control pathway models the location, orientation, scale, and speed of the attended object. The posterior distribution of these states is estimated with particle filtering. Deeper in the control pathway, we encounter an attentional mechanism that learns to select gazes so as to minimize tracking uncertainty. Unlike in our previous work, we introduce gaze selection strategies that operate in the presence of partial information and on a continuous action space. We show that a straightforward extension of the existing approach to the partial information setting results in poor performance, and we propose an alternative method based on modeling the reward surface as a gaussian process. This approach gives good performance in the presence of partial information and allows us to expand the action space from a small, discrete set of fixation points to a continuous domain.

Abstract:
Enabling Foveated Rendering for VR devices displays is fundamental when dealing with real-time ray tracing. Combining traditional methods with Neural based strategies, such as NeRFs and 3D Gaussian Splatting, may impact on leveraging performance even more. In this work we enhance and validate how well our traditional Instant-NeRF reconstructs common ray-traced effects through user metrics and quality metrics. We also show that 3D Gaussian Splatting used in the periphery vision area presents better results than the perceptual quality achieved through NeRFs. We present a deep human perception experiment through different global illumination light effects.

Abstract:
(1) Background: To evaluate superficial capillary plexus (SCP), deep capillary plexus (DCP), choriocapillaris (CC), perfusion density (PD), and vessel length density (VLD) in macular and near/mid periphery regions in patients with retinitis pigmentosa (RP) using widefield swept source optical coherence tomography angiography (WSS-OCTA). (2) Methods: Twelve RP patients (20 eyes) and 20 age-matched subjects (20 eyes) were imaged with the SS-OCTA system (PLEX Elite 9000, Carl Zeiss Meditec Inc., Dublin, CA, USA). Quantitative analysis was performed in the macular and peripheral regions. The main outcome measures were SCP, DCP, CC, PD, and VLD in central and peripheral areas. (3) Results: Mean visual acuity, central macular thickness, and microperimetry were significantly reduced in RP patients compared to normal subjects (p &lt; 0.05). The perfusion density and VLD of SCP, DCP, and CC were significantly reduced in RP patients compared to normal controls both in the central and peripheral retina (p &lt; 0.05). A significant direct correlation was found in RP patients between PD of the 1.5 mm central retina both in DCP and CC and microperimetry at 4° and 8°. (4) Conclusions: Widefield SS-OCTA shows an impairment of retinal and choroidal perfusion density and vessel length density in central and peripheral retina of RP patients. The reduction of flow features correlates with the macular function.

Abstract:
The Early Mesozoic Baga-Khentey pluton is the fragment of the Dauria-Khentey batholith, which could have formed due by the mantle plume action on lower horizons of the continental crust within the zone of collisional compression by closing of the Mongol-Okhotsk ocean. The batholith and their peripheral zones possibly formed from the mantle and crustal sources of magma. The Ikh-Narotin-Khid Massif is located on the border of the rifting zones on periphery of the Late Mesozoic area. The petrographic and geochemical affinity of granitoids of the Ikh-Narotin-Khid massif and composition of gneisses from the country rocks might indicate that this was the substratum in formation of palingenic granites of the calc-alkali series. The distinctions in rock composition of the large plutons consist in minor differentiation of the Baga-Khentey Massif rocks probably related to the anatexis conditions and origin of melts in the collisional compression setting. The granites of the Ikh-Narotin-Khid Massif formed in the extension setting favorable for deep differentiation of magmatic melts.

Abstract:
Abstract Telomere anchoring to nuclear envelope (NE) is a key feature of nuclear genome architecture. Peripheral localization of telomeres is important for chromatin silencing, telomere replication and for the control of inappropriate recombination. Here, we report that fission yeast quiescent cells harbor predominantly a single telomeric cluster anchored to the NE. Telomere cluster association to the NE relies on Rap1–Bqt4 interaction, which is impacted by the length of telomeric sequences. In quiescent cells, reducing telomere length or deleting bqt4, both result in an increase in transcription of the telomeric repeat-containing RNA (TERRA). In the absence of Bqt4, telomere shortening leads to deep increase in TERRA level and the concomitant formation of subtelomeric rearrangements (STEEx) that accumulate massively in quiescent cells. Taken together, our data demonstrate that Rap1–Bqt4-dependent telomere association to NE preserves telomere integrity in post-mitotic cells, preventing telomeric transcription and recombination. This defines the nuclear periphery as an area where recombination is restricted, creating a safe zone for telomeres of post-mitotic cells.

Abstract:
Afterdrop, the continued fall of deep body temperatures during rewarming after hypothermia, is thought to endanger the heart by further cooling from cold blood presumed to be returning from the periphery. However, afterdrop is not always observed, depending on the circumstances. To explore this phenomenon, mild hypothermia was induced quantitatively with a suit calorimeter, using several patterns of cooling and rewarming. When cooling was rapid and followed immediately by rewarming, there were typical afterdrops in the temperatures measured in the rectum, auditory canal, and esophagus. However, when rewarming was delayed, or when cooling had been slow and prolonged, afterdrop was not seen. Afterdrops were then observed in two physical models that had no circulation: a bag of gelatin and a leg of beef. Central layers continued to give up heat as long as the surrounding layer was cooler. These results, together with recent findings by others that peripheral blood flow is low until afterdrop is complete, make this circulatory explanation of afterdrop improbable. Alternatively, afterdrop can be explained by the way heat moves through a mass of tissue.

Abstract:
Impressionism has been studied in the context of the procedural nature of European culture and the peculiarities of its development in the final intentional formation period. Cultural, comparative and analytical methods of analysis are used. The article emphasizes: since the beginning of European culture, its artistic development has determined the desire to express images of the world in their real and objective perspective. It achieves this in the 19th century. The analysis gives grounds for the following conclusion. At the turn of the 19th – 20 th centuries the vector of observation of images of the world changes. Culture forms an intentional reflection, which determines its cultural and artistic development. The object perspective loses its relevance, but the movement from the (specific) object towards the periphery and the deep dimension of phenomena becomes decisive for art. Impressionism expresses only one aspect of such movement and it is directed towards the deep sphere of the object. Impressionism is characterized by the phenomenological principle of artistic representation.

Abstract:
The process of spinning and machining for heavy plates has the problems of a large amount of machining, large springback, and easy cracking. Aiming to address these issues, we proposed a deep drawing forming method for a plate with differential thickness to manufacture an integral ellipsoid component with a thin zone in the middle and a thick zone in the periphery. The plate with a differential thickness was initially produced through machining, followed by the execution of deep drawing deformation. During the deformation process of plates with differential thickness, the thin zone is prone to rupture defects. Therefore, a hydroforming method utilizing an elastic auxiliary plate was adopted to solve this problem. Through mechanical analysis and deep drawing experiments, the influences of hydraulic pressure and elastic auxiliary plate on the distributions of thickness and strain were studied, and the influence of friction on hydroforming was analyzed. The results indicate that increasing the hydraulic pressure and setting elastic auxiliary plates can increase the interfacial friction, reduce the thickness thinning rate, and improve the thickness distribution and deformation uniformity within the thin zone. When the hydraulic pressure is 5.2 MPa and the thickness of the elastic plate is 5 mm, the maximum thickness thinning rate of the ellipsoid shell is 8.8%, which is 34% lower than that of the ellipsoid shell obtained via conventional deep drawing.

Abstract:
The Lower Paleozoic of the Awati Sag and its periphery is a region with relatively low levels of exploration and stands as a frontier for ultra-deep hydrocarbon exploration. Based on outcrop and core samples, this study integrated organic geochemical analysis, total organic carbon (TOC) logging interpretation, and one-dimensional and two-dimensional hydrocarbon accumulation simulations, to clarify the primary source rock of the Lower Paleozoic and its characteristics, as well as its hydrocarbon accumulation mode. The findings indicate the following: (1) The Lower Paleozoic features two sets of industrial source rocks. The Yuertusi Formation, with its considerable thickness (approximately 200 m), widespread distribution, and elevated TOC (averaging approximately 5% from experimental data and logging interpretation), stands out as the Lower Paleozoic’s most pivotal source rock. (2) The Yuertusi and Saergan Formations are in a high-to-over-mature stage, with the Yuertusi initiating oil generation in the early Silurian and transitioning to gas by the late Permian. The Saergan began producing oil in the Carboniferous, followed by gas in the late Permian. (3) The potential ultra-deep gas reservoirs in the Awati Sag are mainly distributed in the structural traps closer to the deep faults in five potential target formations. Deep natural gas typically exhibits mixed-source signatures, with the mixing notably pronounced along the Shajingzi Fault Belt due to influential basin-controlling faults.
