Motivation: The South-African deep level gold mining industry has adapted in many ways, as the pursuit for gold has led deep into the earth core, where rock face temperatures measure around 60°C. Ventilation adapted through engineering developments like refrigeration systems, creating cooler work environments to an extent. Despite these developments the risks of high ambient temperatures coupled with strenuous work and dehydration remains, leading to alternative methods of control that have to indicate whether employees have the necessary functional capacity to perform daily work tasks. Abstract:
This thesis concerns the application of different artificial neural network architectures on the classification of multivariate accelerometer time series data into activity classes such as sitting, lying down, running, or walking. There is a strong correlation between increased health risks in children and their amount of daily screen time (as reported in questionnaires). The dependency is not clearly understood, as there are no such dependencies reported when the sedentary (idle) time is measured objectively. Consequently, there is an interest from the medical side to be able to perform such

The sequestering CO2 in a suitable geological medium can be a feasible method to avoid the negative effects of CO2 emissions in the atmosphere. CO2 sequestration is the capture of, separation, and long-term storage of CO2 in underground geological environments. A case study was simulated regard

This master's thesis investigates how a state-of-the-art (SOTA) deep neural network (NN) model can be created for a specific natural language processing (NLP) dataset, the effects of using different dimensionality reduction techniques on common pre-trained word embeddings and how well this model generalize on a secondary dataset. The research is motivated by two factors. One is that the construction of a machine learning (ML) text classification (TC) model is typically done around a specific dataset and often requires a lot of manual intervention. It's therefore hard to know exactly what proce

Paraphrase generation refers to the task of automatically generating a paraphrase given an input sentence or text. Paraphrase generation is a fundamental yet challenging natural language processing (NLP) task and is utilized in a variety of applications such as question answering, information retrieval, conversational systems etc. In this study, we address the problem of paraphrase generation of questions in Swedish by evaluating two different deep generative models that have shown promising results on paraphrase generation of questions in English. The first model is a Conditional Variational

The Convolutional Neural Networks are getting more and more popular due to their applications in revolutionary technologies like Autonomous Driving, Biomedical Imaging, and Natural Language Processing. With this increase in adoption, the complexity of underlying algorithms is also increasing. This trend entails implications for the computation platforms as well, i.e. GPUs, FPGA, or ASIC based accelerators, especially for the Address Generation Unit (AGU), which is responsible for the memory access. Existing accelerators typically have Parametrizable Datapath AGUs, which have minimal adaptabili

Textual data is one of the most widespread forms of data and the amount of such data available in the world increases at a rapid rate. Text can be understood as either a sequence of characters or words, where the latter approach is the most common. With the breakthroughs within the area of applied artificial intelligence in recent years, more and more tasks are aided by automatic processing of text in various applications. The models introduced in the following sections rely on deep-learning sequence-processing in order to process and text to produce a regression algorithm for classification o
