Song, Gi Hye. "NABUCCO." Master's thesis, Akademie múzických umění v Praze.Divadelní fakulta. Knihovna, 2014. http://www.nusl.cz/ntk/nusl-178008.

Abstract:
My master's degree thesis is about the premiere held at La Scala Theatre in Milan, Italy of Nabucco by Giussepe Verdi. This thesis is made up of two parts: a theoretical part and a practical part. The theoretical part introduces the life of Verdi, the background of the "birth" of the Opera Nabucco, and the historical background of the time. This section will also discuss the history of the Babylon Captivity, which is the background of Nabucco. The history of Korea and Italy when (ruled over) will also be compared. Lastly Va Pensiero sull ali doroate, the very important aria of Nabucco, is examined. This thesis includes research on three different Nabuccos performed in the last two years in many different countries. The first is a collaboration by the Opera House of Royal Covent Garden of Britain and La Scala Theatre of Milano in 2013. This opera is very abstract and modernized, and presented with minimalist staging and costume. The second was held on Vlaamse Opera in Antwerp, Belgium in 2013. This was an opera with very modern and fancy staging and costume like a musical compared to the first Nabucco. Also the opera was an adaptation of many problems of the present society. The third was a Nabucco performed in Kennedy Center by the Washington National Opera of Washington, U.S. in 2012. Beside the former two operas, it showed the quintessence of classic opera with an elaborate and magnificent scale of the stage, equipment, and costume. The three different recreations of Nabucco with historical accounts enabled me to work freely and more creatively. In the practical part, the overall concept of the recreation of Nabucco is shown. The concept describes how and when the inspirations come from, moreover the balance to the historical background tried. Compared to other works, the key concept is the contrast between two ethnic groups rather to the contrast between each character in the opera, and the traditional visual features of Jewish people used, as well as Babylon's. The main concept is the combination of historical and contemporary aspects. For example, in the case of Babylon, luxurious and decadent costumes partially inspired by the gold color of the Ishtar Gate used and in the case of Babylonian forces, the symbols that reminds one of Babylon attached to the present uniforms of military forces. Nabucco and his two daughters have significant differences. Abigaille is a woman with charisma and power, whereas Fenena is very thrifty and her mind is pure. Lastly, Zacharias and Ismael appear with typical Jewish costumes. The dramatical characteristics of opera is combined with the harmony of history and contemporary parts over the whole concepts of Nabucco. The costumes show the fundamental parts of people from each ethnic group over artistic factors.

SOUKUP, Jiří. "Drobná próza české dekadence." Master's thesis, 2008. http://www.nusl.cz/ntk/nusl-47295.

Abstract:
The goal of the work advanced is to examine the problems of the Czech literary decadence, the term itself and the possible limits of its use. As a basic material we investigate a corpus of texts belonging mainly to the short story genre, also paying attention to the model of a decadent novel and being interested in the most significant decadent features. The problems of literary decadence do not belong to profoundly explored topics in the history of the Czech literature, incidentally conditioned by the preference of the symbolist and decadent poetry. That is why this work was to present some texts themselves, potentially representative for the model of a decadent short story genre and of certain artistic value. The text of this work consists of three main parts. The first presents the possibilities of progressive insight into the topic, its cultural and philosophical context, showing two model novels (Huysmans{\crq} A Rebours and Wilde{\crq}s The Picture of Dorian Gray) as different but relevant types of the decadent living scheme, the specific conception of life and the role of art in it. The second part applies several theoretical questions onto the topic, constructing the form. In the final part more than two tens of original Czech short stories are concerned and the thematic composition analysed, that at least some questions asked in the previous parts could be answered and certain theses postulated proved.

Abstract:
This M.A. thesis focuses on the problematic relationship between Henry James and Aestheticism and Decadence on the example of his two masterpieces-The Portrait of a Lady () and The Golden Bowl (). The main task is to document the evolution of this relationship and to point out that despite his lifelong preoccupation with these two artistic movements in his literary works, James refuses to assume a concrete stance toward them. Before the literary analysis of the two abovementioned novels, the author devotes the first chapter to a brief historical survey as to the nature and purpose of the work of art, to the development Aestheticism and Decadence in Europe and Britain, and to James's relationship with some of the proponents of British Aestheticism. The rest of the thesis is devoted to the literary analysis of the two novels through the optics of Aestheticism and Decadence. Lebedová, Anna. "Barbey d'Aurevilly mezi romantismem a dekadencí." Master's thesis, 2017. http://www.nusl.cz/ntk/nusl-369914.

Full text
Abstract:
(in English): The main objective of the thesis Jules Barbey d'Aurevilly between romanticism and decadence is not only to describe Barbey's novels Un Prêtre marié and L'Ensorcelée but specially to put these two works into context of decadent aesthetics. At the beginning of this work stood the question of whenever we can consider Jules Barbey d'Aurevilly (similarly to Charles Baudelaire) to be a pioneer of the decadent movement. We will be analysing generally universal themes, such as love, pride or revolt, but we will see them through the prism of decadence, allowing them to obtain new meanings. The same motive of love, standing for passion in a romantic work, attains in Barbey's universe a character of a pathological instinct. We have divided our work into three chapters. The first one represents a theoretical part, in which we had put Barbey's work into its literary-historical context, and we had shown the topics of the generation of "disenchanted" romantics preceding the generation of decadents. Consequently, we have arrived at the main motives of decadence par excellence. The second chapter, in which we focus on the novel Un Prêtre marié, is then the essential core of our work. Through character analysis we study motives such as hysteria, incest, pride, sadomasochism, sexuality and others,...

Summary: Mateiu I. Caragiale and Romanian literary decadence This statement deals especially with works by Mateiu I. Caragiale, who is the only one Romanian author of decadence prose. It contains the brief biographical chapter, because the certain biographical details are necessary for understanding of author's work. Further it deals gradually with all Caragiale's literary pieces and each is devoted to the separate chapter and they are sorted chronology by the period, when they were written (not published). It is observed mainly the unifying elements of all work and the gradual evolution as well. The second chapter is about author's poetry summarized to the collection The eagles (Pajere) and explores it from versological, language and thematic perspective. It also looks for the connections with the contemporary poetic lines as parnasism, symbolism, decadence and disproves the definite assignment this largely original and peculiar poetry to parnasism. Other chapters deal gradually with Caragiale's prosaic works: the story Remember, the top novel The kings fromthe old court (Craiide Curtea-Veche) and novel fraction Under the seal of secrecy (Sub pecetea tainei). All proses are observed from the following aspects:stylistic, narrative (here I obviously come out the conception F. K. Stanzel's, G. Genette's and S....

Vodička, Marek. "Pojmy dekadence a zdraví v Nietzscheho pozdní filosofii." Master's thesis, 2020. http://www.nusl.cz/ntk/nusl-435387.

Abstract:
The Concepts of Decadence and Health in Nietzsche's Late Philosophy The thesis deals with the concepts of decadence and health, which feature prominently in Nietzsche's late thinking. The core sources of the thesis are Nietzsche's works from 1888, namely The Case of Wagner, Twilight of the Idols, The Anti-Christ, Ecce Homo and Nietzsche contra Wagner, although earlier works are occasionally cited as well. The thesis aims to explore what the motives decadence and health mean in the context of late Nietzsche's thinking, what role they play in his grand philosophical project of the revaluation of all values, and how they interplay with each other. A consistent motive is applied throughout the thesis, that of decadence and health being opposites in terms of "amount" or "direction" of will to power manifesting itself through them - decadence, or bodily decay, is taken to represent a descending line of life characterized by a lack of will to power, and suffering from "a lack of life", while health is taken to represent an ascending line of life which is characterized as overflowing with life and suffering from it as well. The concepts of decadence and health are thus interpreted as physiological manifestations of these two directions, or, roughly said, "vectors" of will to power. The first chapter of the thesis...

Markiewicz, Zuzanna. "Mistyka upadku. Dekadenckie pragnienie transcendencji w filozofii XIX wieku." Phd diss., 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/11089/21918.

Full text
Abstract:
Decadence perceived as a cultural and esthetic phenomenon in the 19th Century is one of the most important philosophical problems of modernity. My analysis aims to show if decadence is an actual issue, as being the source of postmodernity, and to what extent terminology of that time is useful to describe the world now. At the same time one can notice that ours is still the time of decadance and we have never been pass the crisis of culture. It leads to the question whether any transgression is possible, and how to find new fundaments for cultural activity. In the time of devaluation of all former principles, is there still room for expectant ones, as the fall is already happening. Exploration of the 19th Century decadence is a way to examine the mechanisms of falling and to finding potential ways of building a new order. Description of the contemporary world from 19th-Century perspective may bring new view of current problems, unseen without the distance of time. The most important in my dissertation is the tension between esthetics and theology, strongly present in all artistic and literary activity of past ages. It is a sign of fascination, longing for the Absolute and Transcendency, and escapism from a despised world. The rise of interest in mysticisms, asceticism, and all kinds of spiritual movements and associations led to a crisis of old metaphysical system and to searching for new paths. The process of secularization brought in the problem of human constitution linked to the God and the new idea of sovereintgty in earthly life, but also a difficulty with finding new kind of sacrum, based not in transcendence but in culture. The dissertation bases on F. Nietzsche’s definition of decadence and S. Kierkegaard’s reference to religion. The thesis itself is divided into three chapters in the line of The Fall – Transgression – Mysticism, showing two directions of decadent pursuits. First chapter is concerned with the loss of old values and fundaments and disintegration of the Beauty, Goodnes, and Truth. Falling down with satanist practices and fascinations in evil (according to “Down there” of J.-K. Huysmans and poetry of Ch. Baudelaire). Second chapter is a presentation of R. Wagner’s idea of exceeding the decadence with the new project of music dramas and Bayreuth Festival as place of new religion. Wagner believed that art in opera as Gesamtkunstwerk, based in the roots of European tradition, can bring authentic experience of sacrum. The last chapter is about mysticism as a rescue from Catholicism and new perspective upon religion grounded in Kierkegaard’s idea and later continuations of Ch. Baudealire and J.-K. Huysmans. The conclusion shows that decadent thinking structure is based on religion and 19th Century thinkers can’t escape from it. At the end there is a question if transgression of decadence and building a new order of values is possible in the profane, postsecular world, that stays away from the religious paradigm.

Abstract:
The thesis aims to explore the artistic personality of Hunter S. Thompson, one of the most distinctive cultural figures of post-war America, and his genesis as an author, journalist, and a counterculture idol of the 1960s. The era is now widely regarded as a turning point in contemporary American history as its deep-rooted values and norms were, over the course of a decade, gradually transformed by the young generation of social and political activists toward allegedly a more tolerant and liberal kind of community. Crucial in such an endeavor was the role of the countercultural movement that produced some of the most capable intellectual minds of the time, including Thompson. The paper thus analyzes the role and nature of the alternative culture in America as perceived by one of its most observant participants. Also, the thesis focuses on the author's role in establishing a new genre called New Journalism which can be linked with the era's countercultural efforts as well. In general, Thompson, in his texts, examines various phenomena surrounding the counterculture and provides us with a distinctive portrayal of the era's zeitgeist. However, unlike some of his contemporaries, he also remembers to examine numerous flaws and fallacies existing within contemporary American society, the American Dream...

Abstract:
Félicien Rops in the context his works and time is a dissertation thesis dedicated to the life and work of one of the most important representatives of artistic decadence and symbolism of the 19th century. Félicien Rops (1833-1898) was a Belgian graphic artist, illustrator and painter, whose artwork significantly influenced how the sensual beauty of the female body, human sexuality and the darker sides of the human soul were interpreted. The dissertation thesis systematically describes and analytically interprets Rops's life and work in historical, social and cultural context. The first part of the dissertation thesis discusses the early phase of Rops's life, mentions his childhood, schooling and the beginnings of artwork from his time in Brussels until his arrival in Paris. Here I focus mainly on Rops's activities in art circles, his attempts at raising the status of Belgian art within the wider European movement and his activity related to founding satirical periodicals. This phase of Rops's life was defined by his political and social caricaturist work, and was heavily influenced by Flemish tradition and French modern art. I cannot omit Rops's landscape-painting and following the tradition of Flemish and Dutch painting. Special attention is paid to Rops's relation to travelling, sports and...

The thesis opens with providing a basic insight into the life and work of both authors. They were both influenced by decadence, which was not only an artistic trend, but also a specific spirit of the time that was reflected in the psychological and social roots and opinions of both authors. The thesis works with the basic assumption that the Czech decadent Breisky was significantly influenced by Wilde in his opinions and activities. The thesis sets up three areas to explore that mingle and influence each other: criticism, masque and mystification. The main similarities between Wilde and Breisky are analyzed in the thesis. Based on the comparison of individual motives, it is possible to trace how Breisky builds on Wilde's ideas and what, on the other hand, he invents newly or differently. Apart from the comparison of both authors, the thesis also provides a comprehensive overview of Breisky's opinions on literature and art at the theoretical level. The aim of this thesis is to define Jan Opolský′s prosaic works with emphasis put on his evident inspiration through fine arts. The work of Jan Opolský does not exceed limits of a short stories. It almost falls short of an action. The predominant feature would be reflexion and visual description. That is especially the case with voluminious parts devoted to the bright light and the color nuances - with their changing expresions and diverse shades reflected on the presented object of art. The whole momentum of his prosaic work tends to be included in exactly these parts of his ouvre. In his writing, Opolský uses his skills he earned as a craftsman and as an expert in various artistic fields. Because of his obsession with the world of art, he can be considered a good example of a decadent artist. Abstract:
This thesis concerns the similarities between Flann O'Brien's novel The Third Policeman and fin-de-siècle literature, more specifically decadent literature and literature of the early avant-garde. The fact that, apart from metafiction, O'Brien's novel does not deal with aesthetics (neither when it comes to the form nor when it comes to the topic) does not invalidate the presence of fin-de-siècle elements or strategies in it; the elements only change and thus adapt to their new environment. Many of them become ironic, other ones actively contribute to the metafictional scope of the novel. The first chapter explains the parallels between The Third Policeman and fin- de-siècle literature in general. It concentrates primarily on decadent literature and its central theme of "unnaturalness." Unnaturalness occurs in variegated forms, such as artifice, artificiality or make-believe. Unnaturalness can be detected also in the protagonists themselves and even (in compliance with the metafiction of the novel) in the form of O'Brien's hellish world where the narrator finds himself. Discovering and experiencing various forms of unnaturalness go hand in hand with sense perception which is what the chapter also refers to - The Third Policeman remarkably reflects descriptions of sense experiences known from...

The main task is to present a complex catalogue of motifs and images used by Czech decadents in their works and also to analyse the main methods and strategies they used - in particular interstatuality, also connected with the decadent effort to capture the uniqueness of each passing moment, and synaesthesia. The thesis also focuses on the radical individualism of decadent authors and its connection with both the motifs used and the symbolist style in itself - in the form of self-stylization of the decadent authors who tend to identify with their own works and become (even in real life) their own literal subjects. Because of the prominent visual aspect of decadent literature, the thesis also takes into consideration contemporary art works and the relations between words and images.

The aim is to present literary texts written by anarchists against a backdrop of other types of expression. Abstract:
Mgr. Magdalena Kučerová Dissertation work: Myth of Narcissus in French literature at the turn of the 20th century ABSTRACT: This dissertation thesis based on knowledge of French myth criticism deals with the issue of myths in literature, which is a specific manifestation of human symbolic imagination. In its most general level the work studies the definition of a myth and its social function as well as the matter of opposite notions regarding to the mythos and logos, which have gradually more and more differentiated along with the development of European thinking. The myth of Narcissus has probably been one of the oldest myths in European culture. In its most renowned and most comprehensive form, the myth first appeared in the third book of Metamorphoses by Ovid, which has served as an inspiration for remakes by many later authors. The story of a young man who fell in love with his own reflection on the surface of the water contains a great variety of semantically strong structures (mainly the motifs of a mirror, narcissistic love, passively superior character of a hero, or the final metamorphoses into a flower), which are analysed in this study. The author of this study outlines the interpretational evolution of the myth of Narcissus in French literary history...

Kolařík, Karel. "Věčné jinošství Jiřího Karáska ze Lvovic." Doctoral thesis, 2012. http://www.nusl.cz/ntk/nusl-307931.

Abstract:
The thesis attempts to describe the life and work of Jiří Karásek ze Lvovic through an analysis of his lifestyle, i.e. the way in which he organized, embellished and individualized his life. Karásek sought to shape his existence as an artwork, in accordance with the inspirational concepts of the contemporary and antecedent thinkers and artists (e.g. Oscar Wilde, Walter Pater and Maurice Maeterlinck). He accented its integrity and orientation towards beauty. In accord with his aesthetic vision (and his literary work) Karásek conditioned beauty with sadness and pain and attempted to emphasize melancholic beauty, unity in disunion. For that purpose he would accentuate particularly the disintegrative, critical elements, evoking the impression of unsuccessful, self-destructive endeavor to reach life's high ideal. This corresponded with his tragic concept of the artist immolating himself for his Art. I approach Karásek's lifestyle through the use of the terms youth and (eternal) boyhood, which Karásek himself employed as symbols of mournfully beautiful existence in his literary work. I define a youth - in accordance with the romantic and symbolist interpretation - as a person at odds with reality (contemporary truths, customs and rules), a solitary, unique being, trying to construct a new world - only...

Abstract:
The main aspiration of this thesis is to illustrate on several selected examples (or almost "cases" of clinical kind) from French, Russian, Polish, Italian (and in the second plan also German or English) writtings of the 19th and early 20th century the methods of application and presentation of the Withdrawnnes-motif in literature. And on the basis of them (after attempting to mapping out the network of their possible mutual influences, consequences, concurrency or filiations, in the interpretative part of the thesis, so on the II. to VI. chapter) try to define its final characteristics, periodisation, classification and his general definition. … and, moreover, or on the way to this purpose, perhaps to provide the reader a few other - perhaps more useful, or more interesting - information. Keywords: Autostylisation, Confusion of the dream and the reality, Decadence, Dreaming, Extreme mental states of mind, fin de siècle, Individualism, Literary motives, Modernism, Psychologism, Psychic naturalism, Solipsism, Transposition of identity, Withdrawnnes

ROLNÍKOVÁ, Eliška. "Klíčová motivika české dekadentní a parnasitní lyriky." Master's thesis, 2011. http://www.nusl.cz/ntk/nusl-55259.

Abstract:
The subject of this thesis is a characterisation of key motivic units in lyrical works of Jaroslav Vrchlický and Jiří Karásek ze Lvovic, thus it explores Czech parnassian and decadent poetry of the end of 19th century. It observes and traces literal, esthetical and thought shifts of both authors from the aspect of various motives usage. The thesis is divided into five chapters, each of them dealing with one specific motivic unit. The chapters are: 1. Motives of woman, body and sexuality. 2. Motives of dream, imaginary and escape. 3. Motives of dying, disease and decay. 4. Motives of depressiveness, grief, bitterness and vanity. 5. Motives of nature and landscape. Each chapter compares these motives, examines their usage by both authors and looks at how their form and expression undergo a process of certain changes. It also focuses on those motives that appear as completely new elements in their poetry. The conclusion provides with brief summaries of all chapters and a short look through frequency word dictionary of relevant volumes of poems.
