Beuvelet, Olivier. "De la "finestra" à l'"image-fente" . Éthique et esthétique du cadre à partir du "Décalogue" de Krzysztof Kieslowski." Thesis, Paris 3, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012PA030111/document.

Abstract:
What is a frame? What is seeing? What is giving to see? Taking a sequence of Decalogue:VIII as a starting point and after having reminded the importance of the albertinian finestra model as origin of the image in painting, photography and cinema, the thesis explores its handling by Kieślowski in The Decalogue. To begin with, this is done by putting into relation the polyptych project with the Mosaic Decalogue. From there we follow the stake of the second commandment — as a ghost-commandment— to see how it makes up as the root-commandment. Camera Buff is dealt with and studied by means of this commandment being brought into play. Kieślowski’s Artist life is seen in the light of its cinematographic quest of the real inside the picture and of its ethical course. Next, I explore how the frame can be considered as a figure of the Letter. This is when a dialectic of the finestra and of the fessura crops up, where the visual expression of the conflict between the scopic drive and its ethical strain can be observed. I then set about a phenomenology of the image slit inside The Decalogue, taking the pattern ofthe slit to explore the image slit as a visual apparatus and then as a metadiscursive figure. It then becomes a heuristic concept about which I explore the opening structure and then its passage functionality to follow on with the measure of the relation to the origin and finally the primary object dimension. The heuristic concept of image slit may possibly have allowed to underline the unconscious desire of bonding with the origin which the albertinian finestra possesses within itself under the form of the fessura which haunts and distorts it

Abstract:
The topic of this work is the interpretation and disclosure aspects of Anthropological Decalogue aspects in religious education. The Old Testament’s legal texts are little known or hard to understand for a modern man. Decalogue is essential of the texts. Anthropological Decalogue’s interpretation and disclosure aspects are not enough revealed in religious education. The interpretation of Decalogue is actual not only in various religious education contexts but also it is essential for man’s religious sophistication. Most of the children, teenagers and adults have a negative opinion about Decalogue as being a negative, limiting freedom and taking away the joy of life. Such understanding of Decalogue is the obstacle for the positive image of God and authentic religious belief so it is necessary to change this view point by emphasizing the positive access to the Decalogue. This was revealed in this work.

Abstract:
Catholic Church talks about dependences and stimulates humans to think better about their future. Science, in order to solve dependences' problem, incessantly looks for new tools and ways of decision. However, the increasing number of various dependences leads more and more people, especially youngsters, towards a self-destruction. Unhappily, science and society forgets traditional Catholic Church's treasuries - especially the Decalogue - which helped to solve dependences' problem through ages. The relation between dependences and the Decalogue is still little examined in a science area. Many teenagers don't think too much about their future and more and more face dependences, which are harmful for their future and do not help them to build their life on a strong foundation, but contrary: dependences disturb to live a full-fledged life and demolish a future of a youngster. The Decalogue could be one of solutions in order to avoid dependences'. A wish to play internet games, gamble, use intoxicants etc. among youngsters still increases. This is one of the most painful problems in our society. Dependences such as use of drugs, alcoholism can lead to grave sins, such as a suicide or a murder. It is very important during religion and ethics lessons in schools, in order to prevent teenagers from permanent danger of dependences, to educate pupils about the danger of dependences and the truths of Decalogue. A cultivation of new methods and tools is necessary for that.

Moore, Andrew C. "Refugees in DeKalb County: A Capstone Project." Digital Archive @ GSU, 2010. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/iph_theses/86.

Full text
Abstract:
The refugee population within the United States is very dynamic, creating new challenges for county boards of health every day. To assist refugee groups in their transition to life in America, their needs must be thoroughly understood. County officials must also recognize their own limitations and be able to overcome them. Appropriate coordination with community resources relieves boards of health of some of the burden. However, county officials must also ensure that services provided in their domain are exceptional. This project aims to aid in this process for the DeKalb County Board of Health (DCBOH) and incoming refugees. A physician directory was created to improve the coordination between the DCBOH and community resources. In addition, a health manual geared towards informing refugees was updated and prepared for distribution.

Abstract:
This report concerns a thesis of 15 credits for the Bachelor programme industrial design engineering, targeting product development, at Luleå University of Technology. The work was created in collaboration with the client Dafo Brand AB with the goal to create language independent safety labels for their fire supression system, something requested by their clients. Dafos labels has always been primarily text-based, but with exports around the world, both for them and their customers, the administration work would make it easier with less different language labels. The desire was to create uniform decals that are user-friendly, especially for the end user; the vehicle driver, whom need to understand the labels regardless of language. To create these stickers a design process have been used, where phases like pre-study, theory research, creative methods and concept development has been completed in order to develop the concept into a useful product. The phases has included, among other things, questionnaires, interviews, market research and creative methods to take out three concept which has then been examined in usability testing to see which conecpts were the best for the final conecpt. The result was a total of 12 labels with symbols for the fire supression system. The symbols are primarly selected on the basis of the market survey, international standards and the survey responses from the vehicle drivers.

Abstract:
Due to the lack of comparative studies referring to so-called values among the Jewish and Christian faith, the following study examines various interpretations of the Decalogue in the Hebrew Bible. These expositions originate from the Roman Catholic, Jewish and Reformed Evangelical tradition. Since the Ten Commandments have been considered influential in several traditions, this study attempts to identify their authority, purpose and status based on the writings of three different theologians. The analysis does not take the whole tradition itself into account, but seeks to discover diverse perspectives, in order to promote a nuanced result. Hence, the results neither speak for the entire denomination nor its believers. Furthermore, the approach of the study is an analysis of ideas, a commonly used method regarding statements of all kind, principally political and religious commentaries. The method endeavors to describe in order to supply further information not explicitly mentioned by the material itself. Thus, the analysis proceeds from theoretical perspectives such as the Euthyphro dialogue, Biblical hermeneutics and covenant. The theologians agree that morality originates from God because of God’s will. Yet there is disagreement regarding its purpose among all three authors. The Roman Catholic and Jewish author emphasize the covenant as a reason to honor the Ten Commandments and have a liberal approach combined with a historical-critical perspective of the Bible, whereas the Reformed Evangelical author expresses a conservative view, equating the Bible with the actual word of God. The Decalogue enjoys a higher status among the Christian authors, although the Roman Catholic author values the Golden Rule significantly more. The issue regarding whether the Decalogue ought to be treated as being above every other law remains unclear based on the material, but is highly more focused than other commandments in the Hebrew Bible. Definitively the study identifies uniting differences from a wide range of beliefs in the theological area.

Abstract:
West African immigrants appear to carry a heavier burden of hypertensive heart disease than the native-born African Americans in the United States. In this study, I used the socioecological model theory as a guide to examine the association between perceived stress, length of stay in United States, smoking status, housing conditions, and the risk of hypertensive heart disease among West African immigrants, ages 18 - 54 years in DeKalb County, Georgia. In this quantitative, cross-sectional design, self-reported data were collected from a sample of West African immigrant (N=107) in the DeKalb County of Georgia, using a demographic data/screening sheet and the Perceived Stress Scale. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to determine the association between hypertensive heart disease and perceived stress, smoking status, length of stay in the United States, and housing condition, having adjusted for the modifying variables age and education. Results indicated that length of stay in the United States [p =.019, Phi =.331], housing condition [p=.156, R2 =.019], smoking status [p=.050, R2 =.036] and experienced perceived stress experienced [p=.312, R2=.010] are associated with risk of developing hypertensive heart disease. There was a statistically significant association between age [p=.002] and the development of hypertensive heart disease. The result of this study can contribute to positive social change by helping public health agencies to target some of the identified risk factors for hypertensive heart disease in foreign born African American population so as to mitigate the adverse health outcomes associated with hypertensive heart disease.

Abstract:
Introduction: This study was conducted to gain an ethnographic understanding of the Karen persons from Myanmar and their perceptions of tuberculosis (TB) as well as to provide the DeKalb County Board of Health (DCBoH) TB program with practical recommendations for serving this population. Methods: In-depth, open-ended interviews were conducted with 37 Karen-Burmese persons living in the U.S. Local bilingual, bicultural researchers conducted the interviews with respondents recruited from the DCBoH TB clinic and surrounding communities in DeKalb County, Georgia. Both qualitative and quantitative strategies were used to analyze the data. Results: We found that the levels of knowledge pertaining to TB varied greatly. There were few perceptions that were statistically significant among gender and recruitment sources. Also, misconceptions were common in regards to TB transmission and low perceptions of risk. The respondents did request TB education in various formats such as videos and television. Some reported difficulties at the DCBoH included lack of interpreters, limited transportation, and clinic hours. Conclusions: Some of the perceptions of the Karen-Burmese towards TB can be addressed through education. To begin this process it is recommended that the DCBoH TB program provide language-appropriate services that enable both clients and staff members to effectively focus on all concerns regarding TB. Extended clinic hours and transportation would also be helpful for Karen clients. It is important that the staff receives continuous training in cultural competency and an overview of potential misconceptions that this population may embrace.

Colvin, Renyea. "Investigating Potential Risk Factors of Childhood Asthma Re-Hospitalizations in DeKalb County, Georgia." Digital Archive @ GSU, 2008. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/iph_theses/34.

Full text
Abstract:
Asthma is a leading cause of hospitalizations among children in the United States. It accounts for millions of dollars in hospital charges at the national, state, and county levels. The prevention of these hospitalizations is an important public health issue given the financial costs of hospitalizations in an already overburdened healthcare system. This study addresses sociodemographic factors associated with hospitalizations for childhood asthma among children who reside in DeKalb County, Georgia. Results highlight the unequal burden of asthma in the southern portion of the county. Additional analysis suggests that changes to existing institution-level surveillance systems can be made to improve upon the quality of data available to researchers. This research calls for a state-wide asthma surveillance system that routinely collects information on the most common indicators of disease burden, thereby improving the ability of public health professionals to accurately determine and manage the needs of children with asthma.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this evaluation was to conduct a needs assessment for the DeKalb County Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) Program, which utilizes volunteers to advocate for the best interest of abused and neglected children who are in foster care. This assessment assisted the staff in developing a recruitment strategy targeting retired adults. This assessment evaluated the dependability, health and income of retired adults. For the purpose ofthis study dependability was measured by: (a) the number of hours volunteers spent on assigned cases per month, (b) the number of hearings attended and (c) the number of monthly advocacy reports that were completed and sent to volunteer’s advocacy supervisors between September 2004 and November 2004. Six, current, retired adult volunteers participated in the study. A convenience sample of six non-retired volunteers was used to compare dependability findings with those of retired adult volunteers. Income and health were qualitatively analyzed. Descriptive analysis was used describe dependability and volunteer demographics. This evaluation was relevant to DeKalb CASA because, as a program that is dependent upon volunteers to for its success, it is vital that the most advantageous volunteer be recruited and retained. Thus, this evaluation allowed staff to identify the benefit of recruiting this target population in regards to their level of dependabifity compared to non-retired volunteers, as well as, the potential challenges experienced by retired adults in regards to health related illnesses and limited income. Findings from this study concluded that retired adult volunteers are more dependable than non-retired volunteers. In addition, volunteering did contribute to increased feelings of better mental and physical health. Moreover, their limited income did not restrict their ability to volunteer.

Abstract:
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is preventable and reversible in the early stages with upstream strategies; however, the number of individuals diagnosed with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) is increasing annually. Although researchers have documented the physiological and psychological stressors associated with hemodialysis (HD), little is known about the effects of in-center HD on the recipients in DeKalb County, Georgia. This study described the experiences of 10 African American HD patients who dialyze in DeKalb County. Using a phenomenological approach, the interviews were transcribed and then analyzed for significant quotes and recurrent themes relevant to receiving HD in DeKalb County. The health belief model was used to identify the perceptions and susceptibilities that formed the lived experiences of the participants. Results showed that 70% of the patients had been diagnosed with hypertension and/or diabetes and that 50% had never heard of ESRD prior to diagnosis. All 10 patients reported never knowing that hypertension and/or diabetes was a major cause of ESRD. The study sought to find common themes related to the perceived threat of ESRD by the participants. This study can be used to implement positive social change by instituting upstream strategies to decrease the prevalence of ESRD or slow the progression of CKD in this population, heightening awareness of this disease in minority communities, and implementing a sustainable health behavior plan to decrease the prevalence of the disease.

Woods, Jamie. "Welcome to America: A Culturally-Appropriate Resource Manual for Karen Refugees in DeKalb County, Georgia." Digital Archive @ GSU, 2009. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/iph_theses/80.

Full text
Abstract:
Introduction: It is estimated that as many as 17,000 Burmese refugees will enter into the United States (U.S.) in 2009 (USDOS, 2009). Many of these refugees will arrive in Georgia, as many as 80% of which will resettle in DeKalb County. Majority of these refugees will be of Karen ethnicity, an ethnic minority comprising 7% of the Myanmar population. Myanmar’s economic struggles, history of civil war, social injustices, and political crisis have led many of its residents to flee persecution seeking refuge in the U.S. Conflict also impacts the health status of Myanmar. In the World Health Organization’s (WHO) ranking of the health status of individual countries, Myanmar ranked almost last. Due to the poor health outcomes of individuals living in Myanmar and the Refugee camps in Thailand, it can be expected that the refugees entering the U.S. will have significant health problems. Aim: The purpose of this capstone was to provide a resource for the Karen in DeKalb County so that they may have a link to necessary personal health services that may have otherwise been unavailable, and inform educate and empower these individuals about health issues that impact them. Methods: A needs assessment of the target population was conducted, and interviews of three trained health promoters from the Karen community in DeKalb County were used to gain insight into the needs of newly arriving refugees Results: Karen refugees often enter the U.S. with a host of health problems, but lack knowledge surrounding navigation of the U.S. healthcare system. Discussion: The findings of the review of literature and interviews of Karen refugees in the community supports the assumption that a resource manual is needed to assist the Karen refugees residing in DeKalb County, and has the potential to positively impact the resettlement process and improve health for these individuals. In addition, results suggest that categories of health chosen for inclusion in the manual were in line with the needs of the Karen refugees.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine the extent to which the following factors may differ between chronically tardy and non-tardy students: Parental attitudes, family structure, socioeconomic status, teacher attitudes, and schoolmates' influence. The population of this study was the students at an elementary school in the Dekalb County School System, Georgia. Thirty students participated in the study. The ages of the participants ranged from 8 through 13. The instrument used in this study is entitled The Home and School Environment Questionnaire. Of the five variables analyzed, only two proved to have significant differences as perceived by the two groups of students. The two variables were: (1) Family structure in terms of the presence of the father in the home, and (2) teacher attitude. Along with the findings, conclusions, and implications, it was recommended that the following initiatives be developed: (1) Parenting Workshops for the parents of those students identified as chronically tardy; (2) Schoolwide strategies that encourage students to arrive at school on time; (3) A Big Brother program in which male adult figures spend time with chronically tardy students; (4) A communication system that will inform parents of tardies on a daily basis; (5) Workshops to enhance positive teacher-student interactions that will improve students' perceptions of teachers; and (6) rewards for students and praise parents for maintaining good attendance records in school.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between effective school characteristics and student achievement after the first year of implementing a school improvement project. The intent of this study was to analyze what occurred in terms of processes and products and to compare changes in school characteristics and student changes achievement in the treatment schools in the control schools. The study posed the following questions: 1. Was there a difference in the treatment group and in the control group in changes in effective school characteristics: environment, goals, leadership, expectations, time-on-task, monitoring student progress, and home/school relations? 2. Was the treatment group more successful than the control group based on student achievement of the basic skills? 3. What was the relationship between effective school characteristics and student achievement? The study encompassed the use of an experimental design and employed techniques of ethnographic studies. Each group, treatment and control, consisted of three schools that were matched on socio-economic status and on student achievement. Six principals, 150 teachers, and 2,228 students were involved in the study. The treatment consisted of leadership training on effective school characteristics, the development and implementation of a school-based improvement plan, and staff development. The Connecticut · School Effectiveness Questionnaire, the California Achievement Test, and observed behavior were used as measurement tools. Data collected on thirty-five variables were subjected to t-tests, correlations, and factor analysis. The results of the study appear to warrant the following conclusions: 1. The DeKalb County school-based model was successful in improving effective school characteristics in the treatment group. The treatment was highly related to each of the following effective school characteristics: environment, goals, leadership, expectations, time-on task, monitoring student progress, and home/school relations. This finding was verified by observed behavior. The control group did not show significant ii improvement in any of the seven effective school characteristics. 2. There was no significant relationship between the treatment and student achievement gains in mathematics and in reading when gains were disaggregated by individual students. 3. There was a significant relationship between achievement gains in reading and in mathematics in the treatment group when gains were aggregated. 4. There was a moderately significant relationship between mathematics gain and reading gain. 5. The treatment group was successful in improving the achievement of students in each quartile. The control group was successful scores of students in quartiles, but was not in improving the first, successful the achievement second, and third in improving the achievement of students in the fourth quartile. 6. There was no significant relationship between student achievement and each of the following characteristics: environment, goals, leadership, expectations, time-on task, monitoring student progress, and home/school relations. 7. The characteristics impacted the most during the first year of implementation were leadership, time-on-task, monitoring student progress, and goals. 8. The pretest characteristics that showed high relationships with each of the posttest characteristics iii were environment, expectations, and home/ school relations. 9. A high relationship was evidenced between pretest achievement and posttest achievement in mathematics and in reading. Reading achievement was also related to mathematics achievement. 10. When socio-economic status, sex, and grade were controlled, no significant relationship existed with any of the other thirty-two variables used in this study.

Abstract:
The relationship between mental health and public health has been debated for decades. But when services are delivered through publically funded mental health clinics, it clearly becomes a public health endeavor. One of the latest trends in mental health service delivery is the recovery concept. Developed in the 1990’s, the recovery concept represents a paradigm shift where successful treatment is defined by self-awareness, self-care, and self-fulfillment. Furthermore, patients are encouraged to assess their own progress in the recovery process. There are currently nine unique assessment tools to measure recovery progress, including the Mental Health Recovery Measure (MHRM), which was used in this study. The current study followed the implementation of the recovery model in the DeKalb Community Service Board (DeKalb CSB). DeKalb CSB has 12 locations that serve 10,000 patients with mental illness, substance abuse, and developmental disabilities each year. Only patients with primary diagnoses of mental health or substance abuse disorders were considered for this study. Implementation of the MHRM began in December 2008 and included all DeKalb CSB patients, however only new DeKalb CSB patients were considered for this study. During 13 months of data collection 960 clients completed 2 assessments and 196 completed 3 assessments. A new consumer is defined as someone who has just completed the intake process and has no record of previous service at DeKalb CSB. The current study examined trends in MHRM data in the DeKalb CSB population; and offered recommendations for future implementation.

Abstract:
This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between the quality of school building maintenance and student achievement. Variables such as school age, size of campus, enrollment, and instructional configuration were examined. Additionally, the location of the school in DeKalb County, the board districts in which a school was located, and socioeconomic status of the school’s community were selected for study to determine if school location and demographics affected overall student achievement when grouped along with building condition. The Pearson Correlation of Coefficient tested twenty-seven variables for significance level. Twenty-one of the twenty-seven null hypotheses were accepted; six were rejected. A one-way analysis of variance was conducted on these six null hypotheses. These variables-socioeconomic status, school geographic area, school enrollment, board districts, portable units, and frequency of floors swept-were analyzed in relation to test scores using a multiple regression analysis. The conclusion of the study is that building condition is not related to student achievement for third grade students in DeKalb County. The data show that student achievement is more related to socioeconomic status, location, and enrollment than to maintenance issues.

Abstract:
The objective of this study was to establish the presence of a relationship between stress factors and the incidence of child abuse. The study was secondary analysis of descriptive statistics provided by the Georgia Department of Human Resources and the u.s. Department of Commerce. The sample consisted of seven-hundred, fifty identified Black perpetrators of child abuse and it was drawn from Fulton and DeKalb counties, State of Georgia. The null hypothesis presented in this study was that poverty was the best predictor of child abuse in Black families. The null hypothesis was rejected based on the fact that over 50% of the sample population was identified as being poor according to the national poverty line, which made poverty a negligible factor . The factors that are significant predictors of child abuse in Fulton and DeKalb counties, State of Georgia, in ranked order, are: l) marital status and 2) education. The study was designed to determine if there was a relationship between the incidence of child abuse in Black families and stress factors.

The efficacy of a nutritional program depends on knowledge about the bird's genetic potential for growth, since this is the rational way of calculating nutritional requirements and predicting food consumption. In this sense, the factorial models integrated the growth curves of birds assists in the establishment or evaluation of specific food programs. Because they are dynamic models, they make it possible to calculate the feed intake according to the growth pattern of the lineage over time. Traditionally the evaluation of the body composition is made by comparative slaughter, impossibility the quick access to the information and to study the variations of the characteristics studied in the course of time in the same animal. An alternative is the X-ray absorptiometry technique (DXA) that allows in vivo evaluation of the body composition of the birds without the need to sacrifice them reconciling social and scientific interests. Based on this, the objective of this work was to describe the growth potential of the body and body components of laying hens Dekalb and Lohmann (White and Brown) through of the Gompertz function, with the body composition taken by the DXA technique in the same birds during the growth. A total of 360 laying hens of the Lohmann and Dekalb strains were used in a completely randomized design, with four treatments (strains) and six replicates of 15 birds. The birds were housed in experimental shed with cages in pyramidal system and with automated temperature control. Diets were provides ad libitum and composed of five diets according to age formulated to meet the nutritional requirements of the strains, ensuring that there was no limiting nutrient. To describe the growth, one bird per experimental unit was randomly identified and evaluated from 1 to 126 days of age. In the ages 0, 14, 28, 56, 70, 77, 84, 98, 112 and 126 days, birds were scanned to estimate bone mineral content, lean and fat tissue by means of dual beam X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) using Hologic-QDR® model. At the same time, a study was performed to correlate composition data obtained by DXA and by chemical analysis of the feather free body (FFB). These data were submitted to analysis of variance (ANOVA), being verified differences in the quantification of the body composition by the different techniques. Due to these differences, regressions were adjusted for each chemical component of the body, thus generating correction equations of the data obtained by DXA in reference to the chemical method, using Dekalb Brown birds, following the same ages and procedures of the growth study. The Gompertz function was used to describe the growth of the body and chemical components for each strain. The measurement of body composition in the same birds over time by DXA assisted in the reduction of error in the evaluation of the growth of laying hens. The strains evaluated in this study showed differences in body growth, feathers and components among themselves. And the growth parameters described here are consistent with those found in the literature, and will aid in the improvement of models for calculating nutritional requirements, improving the effectiveness of feeding programs.

Abstract:
Rivers and streams are sensitive to alterations in their watersheds and one of the greatest disturbances is from urban development. An urban stream channel in the Atlanta metropolitan area in the Georgia Piedmont was studied to establish the nature of adjustment the channel form was experiencing. This study compared a degraded channel with a channel influenced by stabilization efforts in the same stream reach, in order to investigate the behavior of channel adjustments towards a greater stability. Measurements of the short-term changes in channel cross-sectional area and bed-material volume, following a series of threshold flow events, were taken in the reach and the variation in bed sediment texture was also investigated. Results showed that channel banks were stable compared to more mobile beds and that urban effects continued to dictate sedimentation. Rehabilitation measures were aggrading channels in their reaches and were likely perpetuating the instability of upstream channels.

Abstract:
This is a descriptive study of DeKaib County Department of Family and Children Services’ (DFCS) educational program and academic performance of foster children in their care. This study specifically examines the relationship between placement instability, school mobility, and interagency communication on the academic performance of these children as measured by their Grade Point Average (GPA). The results of the study suggest that there is a significant statistical relationship between school mobility and academic performance and interagency communication and academic performance based on a 0.05 level of probability between the variables. However, a statistically significant relationship between placement instability and academic performance was not found. This study and similar studies can assist DeKaib DFCS and other DFCS agencies in Georgia in developing effective programs that better target educational services for children entering foster care.

Abstract:
This study examines how the American educational system has affected African American students and institutions since desegregation. The research is designed as a comparative study. It analyzes and interprets data relating to the success and hardships experienced by African-American students and teachers in educational institutions. Historical information was used to chronicle the policies and factors which contributed to the status of African Americans in the American educational system. Data was collected from both urban and suburban school systems. Results were compared then analyzed in order to determine if there was a difference in experiences and success rates for African-American students and teachers in both settings. Discipline records were examined, and national test scores of African-American students and institutions were compared. Data collected during this research can be used to increase the awareness of the disadvantages which many African Americans face when it comes to education. The conclusions drawn from these findings support the fact that African Americans have and continue to achieve despite a lack of resources or the intuition which they attend.

Abstract:
This quantitative study described the perceptions of teachers and school administrators related to six variables in the Dekalb County School System. The study involved a population of 200 teachers and 75 school administrators employed in a large metropolitan school system in Georgia. The respondents from the population of 200 teachers and 75 school administrators consisted of 202 total subjects. The sample of the population was analyzed during the 1998-99 academic school year. There were a total of six variables in the study. The statistical procedures involved a t-test for Equality of Means and a Pearson Correlation Analysis. There were six significant findings according to the t-test results. The statistical review of the survey data revealed that teachers and school administrators had significantly different perceptions on all six variables. The overall mean scores were consistently higher for school administrators showing that they were more likely to agree on the tested variables than teachers. According to the Pearson test, all of the variables had a ( r ) value less than .397. The Pearson Analysis produced a weak but significant relationship between teachers and school administrators on all of the variables, thereby supporting the ttest analysis and rejecting all six hypotheses.

Abstract:
This study discusses true and false conversions and the use of the Ten Commandments in evangelism, viewed from the starting point of a Christian ethical perspective. The use of the Ten Commandments in Evangelism is affirmed by Jesus Himself and also by Jesus’ apostles after His ascension to heaven. The validity of the Ten Commandments is eternal. The modern evangelist has been caught by the snares of Satan with regards to the Ten Commandments. The power of the Ten Commandments in evoking a true sense of sin is being undermined by a sly plan of Satan that causes enmity between the Law and grace. It has basically brought about two schools of thought: those who use the Ten Commandments, and those who reject it. Those who use the Ten Commandments, however, run the risk of using the law in an illegitimate way, and this is termed as “legalism”. On the other hand, those who reject the Ten Commandments are guilty of “Antinomianism”, that literally means “anti-law”. Consequently, all the underlying principles, which God had laid down for the use of the Ten Commandments, are being blatantly disregarded. Instead, the workings and efficacy of the Ten Commandments are exclusively replaced by love and grace. False conversions are the result in both cases. Satan achieves his goal. In opposition to this is the legitimate use of the Ten Commandments as the only means of preventing false conversions. God designed the Ten Commandments in such a way as to firstly reveal His holiness as the only standard that a sinner must meet. As the standard requires absolute holiness and perfection, it brings about a sense of sin. This is because no person can fulfill the standard. Without a true sense of sin, no person can be saved. Within the framework of the Ten Commandments, evidence of the person’s love towards God is comprised through the upholding of the Ten Commandments. The Ten Commandments cannot save anyone, but if the person loves Jesus, they will keep His commandments; a sign of true conversion. The goal of this study was to determine whether any guidelines can be composed to help Evangelists prevent or minimize false conversions, in a Biblically justified manner. The research indicates that without the use of the Ten Commandments during evangelism, many false conversions will ensue. The conclusion of this research is that false conversions can be prevented or minimized through the legitimate use of the Ten Commandments during evangelism.

The general objective of this research was to evaluate the welfare of laying hens in two different systems: Enriched Cage (EC) and Alternative System (AS) and the quality of these systems in relation of behavioral, physiological and productive aspects. The experiment was conducted in a climatic chamber of LaCRA - Laboratory of Rural Constructions and Ambience, in the Federal University of Campina Grande - Paraíba State, Brazil. The research consisted of three experimental periods of 28 days each one. It was used 72 birds of lineage Dekalb White at 27 weeks of age. The light regime was set at 16 hours light and 8 hours of darkness. The experimental design was completely randomized in 2x3 factorial (two creation systems and three environmental conditions: 20 °C, 26 °C and 32 °C) with six replicates and relative humidity of 60%. This research analyzed different parameters: production; physiological aspects; zootechnical performance; egg quality and thermography. Processing techniques and image analysis may come to contribute to the search for information contained in images of confined animais. Both creation systems used in this study showed no large differences in the variables analyzed. Both systems may be compatible in performance and quality of eggs produced.

Chan, Sydney. "Analysis of Data Collected in Pilot Study of Residential Radon in DeKalb County in 2015." 2016. http://scholarworks.gsu.edu/iph_theses/460.

Full text
Abstract:
Dajun DaiRadon is a colorless, odorless, naturally occurring gas. It is currently the second leading cause of lung cancer and the number one cause of lung cancer to non-smokers in the United States. DeKalb County offers free screening for radon for residents. However, screening rates vary across the county. This pilot study focused on 14 selected tracts within DeKalb County with relatively low levels of radon screening. Over 200 households were recruited and homes were tested for indoor radon concentrations on the lowest livable floor over an 8-week period from March – May 2016. Tract-level characteristics were examined to understand the varitations of race, income, education, and poverty status between the 14 selected tracts and all of DeKalb County. The 14 selected tracts were comparable to all of DeKalb County in most factors besides race. Radon was detected in 73% of the homes sample and 4% had levels above the EPA guideline of 4 pCi/L. Multi-variate linear regression was used to compare all housing construction characteristics with radon concentrations and suggested that having a basement was the strongest predictive factor for detectable and/or hazardous levels of radon. Radon screening can identify problems and spur home owners to remediate but low screening rates may impact the potential health impact of free screening programs. More research should be done to identify why screening rates vary in order to identify ways to enhance screening and reduce radon exposure in DeKalb County.

Ahmad, Maryam. "Tuberculosis (TB) Trends Among Refugee, Other Foreign-Born, and US-Born Cases in DeKalb County During 2004-2015." 2016. http://scholarworks.gsu.edu/iph_theses/474.

Abstract:
BACKGROUND: On World TB Day 2016, CDC reported an increase in number of US tuberculosis (TB) cases in 2015, the first time in 23 years. TB is the largest cause of mortality from any bacterial disease worldwide, with 95% of cases and deaths in low and middle-income countries, where it remains endemic. The recent increase in US TB cases highlights the fact that TB is a global issue, thus requiring a global effort to achieve elimination, with particular focus on active TB and Latent TB Infection (LTBI) identification and treatment among populations at high risk. The refugee population requires particular attention, considering TB disproportionately afflicts refugees and there are more refugees worldwide today than in the past 20 years. Georgia is among the top 10 US states for refugee arrivals, with majority resettling in DeKalb County, approximately 90% in 2010. There is a lack of data on TB rates among these populations and effects of implementation of the 2007 expanded CDC Technical Instructions on imported TB and LTBI reactivation. OBJECTIVES: (1) Estimate and compare TB disease incidence rates among refugee, other foreign-born, and US-born populations in DeKalb County from 2004 to 2015 (2) Determine refugee TB case contribution to total DeKalb County TB case burden (3) Examine possible trends in number of cases diagnosed ≤ 6 months of US entry, among refugee and other foreign-born persons screened overseas before and after implementation of 2007 expanded CDC Technical Instructions. METHODS: Retrospective study on all new TB cases diagnosed in DeKalb County during 2004-2015. Due to the lack of data on refugee population estimates along with the dynamic nature of this population, three different annual incidence rates were calculated for refugees and other FB. Participant characteristics were compared using chi-square tests and univariate analyses to identify significant differences between groups. Logistic regression was used to model change in number of TB diagnoses ≤ 6 months of US entry against implementation status (pre vs. post) and immigration status (refugee vs. other-FB). RESULTS: From 2004 to 2015, a total of 898 active TB cases were diagnosed in DeKalb County; 569 total foreign-born (144 refugees and 425 other foreign-born) and 329 US-born. Age, race/ethnicity, TB verification type, HIV status, and previous TB diagnosis were found to have significant differences between groups (p < 0.05). Throughout the study period, the highest TB incidence rate was among refugees followed by other FB, and drastically lower rates among US-born. There were significantly more diagnoses ≤ 6 months of US entry among post vs pre-implementation, OR: 2.784 (95% CI: 1.683 – 4.606). Refugee vs. other-FB, OR: 5.103 (95% CI: 3.085 – 8.442). Majority of cases with prior B1 classification (83.6%) were diagnosed ≤ 6 of US entry, which is considered to be possible imported TB, While (90.9%) persons with Class B2, although few, were diagnosed ≤ 6 months of US entry, which suggests possible LTBI reactivation. DISCUSSION: Although TB cases and rates have decreased in DeKalb County over the years, particularly among US-born persons, the foreign-born population remains disproportionately afflicted, with majority of county disease burden, over 70% in 2015. Refugee TB rates in DeKalb County are more comparable to rates in high TB incidence low and middle-income countries rather than US rates. Imported TB and LTBI activation may be major factors involved in the stagnation of progression towards TB elimination. Efforts need to refocus on LTBI identification and treatment to tackle the global issue of TB.

Abstract:
Title: Chiral recognition by mass spectrometry Author: Bc. Lenka Kosíková Department: Department of Organic Chemistry Supervisor: doc. Mgr. Jana Roithová, Ph.D. This work is focused on the use of mass spectrometry as the analytical method for chiral recognition in the gas phase. We have examined formation of complexes (S and R) isomers [dimethyl-2,2'-dihydroxy-1,1'binaphthalene-3,3'-dicarboxylate] with sodium. Chiral effect for the fomation of sodium dimers is 1,34±0,06 and that for formation of trimers 2,38±0,22 in favor of the formation of homochiral complexes. Part of the work is devoted to the preparation of isotopically labeled ester [(R)-(−)- di(D3-methyl)-2,2'-dihydroxy-1,1'binaphthalene-3,3'-dicarboxylate]. Mixing of equimolar amounts of D3-(R) and unlabeled (S) isomers leads to the artificial racemate, while we can still distinguish the enantiomers using mass spectrometry. Another part represents the study of the complex formation between (S and R) isomers of [dimethyl-2,2'-dihydroxy-1,1'binaphthalene-3,3'-dicarboxylate] with the metal complex [(S,S)-1,5-diaza-cis-decalin]Cu(OH)I depending on the molar ratios in the solution. I have showed that the molar concetration of the catalyst in the solution plays an important role in the complex formation and that the ESI source spectra of...
