Abstract:
This chapter discusses how the burgeoning civil rights fixated its glare upon Major League Baseball (MLB), whose owners and executives soon realized that eventually, they were going to have no choice but to accept integration. Although powerless to stop the onrushing tide, they were nevertheless able to control how the story of the game's integration was going to be told. The story they perpetuated is one of the most affirming morality tales in American history—the story of Branch Rickey, Jackie Robinson, and the integration of MLB in 1947. Because baseball in America had reflected the nation's racial practices for decades, the event was perceived as momentous and precipitous because here, baseball foreshadowed nationwide, federally imposed and endorsed desegregation, coming as it did before the Supreme Court's landmark decision in Brown v. Board of Education.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the practices with which intellectual humility is enmeshed in the Christian life: patience and gratitude, which are both manifested in prayer. The discussion recognizes that intellectual humility does not function in isolation, as a virtue in its own right, but is expressed through, and fed by, other practices within the life of faith, as the minds of believers are rightly ordered with respect to God. Patience and gratitude are not represented within the New Testament simply as dispositions, but as deliberate volitional activities, by which the lordship and the goodness of God are acknowledged and behaviours modified accordingly. The chapter traces the key ways in which faithful servants are represented as ‘waiting upon God’ and giving thanks to him, and considers the ways that that these practices are represented as bearing on the epistemic and volitional characteristics of those servants.

Abstract:
Although most adults believe that musical ability is a talent—an inherited gif—this chapter discusses how, in fact, musical ability is based on life experiences and hard work. It shows that the acquisition of excellence is almost always the result of deliberate practice, a set of behaviors consciously designed to promote long-term growth. The amounts of practice time of high-achieving and lower-achieving music students are compared. The factors of autonomy, mastery, and purpose are presented; learning how to learn and practice deliberately is itself a process that must be learned and practiced deliberately. A planning process for deliberate practice is presented, and a practice worksheet form is provided.

Abstract:
The Rome Statute was designed to largely align criminal norms with actual state practice based on the realities of warfare. Article 8 embodied notable new refinements (e.g. in relation to disproportionate attack under Article 8(2)(b)(iv)), but did so against a backdrop of pragmatic military practice. This chapter dissects the structure of war crimes under Rome Statute to demonstrate this deliberate intention of Article 8 and then describes the correlative considerations related to charging practices for the maturing institution, including command responsibility. When properly understood and applied in light of the Elements of Crimes, the Court’s charging decisions with respect to war crimes ought to reflect the paradox that its operative provisions are at once revolutionary yet broadly reflective of the actual practice of warfare.

Abstract:
The American medical system has room for improvement in the area of quality. Many systems-level approaches have been tried, but most have not yielded significant improvements in healthcare quality. This chapter focuses on strategies that mediate individual-level expert performance in a variety of domains. A central strategy underlying expert performance is deliberate practice. Deliberate practice is supported by having a learning orientation and “grit,” which is defined as long-term perseverance and passion for a goal, even if the goal is arduous. A general approach to performance improvement for individuals is also discussed. A reinvestment model for performance improvement proposes that individuals invest their time, effort, and cognitive resources, such as working memory capacity, in the design and implementation of deliberate practice for performance improvement.
