A collection of stories that explore the lives of men and women struggling with love, friendship, growing up and facing the world; all through the lens of Indian culture. Some of these characters are recent immigrants, some have lived in America for years. Regardless, they struggle with issues that are both connected to and separate from their status as Indian Americans. Here we have missed connections and realities. A desire to know as well as a desire to remain in the dark

Wilson, Eleanor. "A delicate equilibrium : living with Huntington's disease." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2013. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/13487/.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: People with Huntington’s disease (HD) can be affected by motor, cognitive and behavioural symptoms. The length of the illness trajectory can result in patients receiving care at home for extended periods during which the contribution from family caregivers is invaluable. There has been little research into patient or carer perspectives on needs or how these should be met, and how these correspond to professional viewpoints. Objectives: To gain an understanding of living with, caring for and working in the field of HD. Study design: A collective case study approach was used to gather data from the person with HD, their family carer and a nominated healthcare professional to build 15 cases involving 33 individuals and 115 interactions (68 interviews and 47 observations) over three years of study participation. Findings: Living with HD requires continued readjustment to maintain balance between increasing disability, diminishing cognition and living well at home. Patients and carers were challenged to cope with: the diagnosis; an impulse to secrecy and a duty to share knowledge; autonomy and decision making; the transformation of homes to hospitals; and a shift in the burden of care when the patient moved to a residential care home. Examination of services showed how multidisciplinary working, a keyworker approach, disease, person and service specific knowledge alongside continuity of staffing contribute to quality care. Conclusion: This is the first qualitative study of living with HD incorporating multiple perspectives over time. It explored the complexity of living with HD and the ways in which care can be provided in the community. The study identified a number of daily challenges for both family and professional carers when changes in capacity occur slowly over time. Holistic, multidisciplinary and flexible care is shown to be essential for those trying to balance the delicate equilibrium of living with HD. nb. McPhillips, Rebecca. "Challenging and delicate communication in the Gender Identity Clinic." Thesis, University of Manchester, 2014. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.618090.

Full text
Abstract:
Working at the intersection of medical sociology and the psychology of health, language and communication, in this PhD I use thematic analysis (TA) and conversation analysis (CA) to provide an insight into various aspects of doctor-patient communication that may be considered, or are constructed as, challenging and/or delicate for either the patient, doctor or both at a Gender Identity Clinic (GIC) in the UK. This project involves the secondary analysis of two existing data-sets: (i) 21 recorded telephone interviews between my PhD supervisor and transsexual patients who attended the GIC; (ii) 156 transcribed audio-recordings and 38 video-recordings (total = 194) of psychiatrist-patient consultations in the GIC. The first original research paper uses TA to investigate the views and experiences of transsexual patients regarding their communication with psychiatrists at the GIC. An important finding was that patients actually appreciated being challenged in this setting, subsequently the implications of this are considered with regards to the achievability and desirability of patient centred communication. The second research paper uses CA to consider how patients overtly challenge psychiatrists in the GIC in ways that have not been shown in conversation analytic research on medical interactions to date. Analysis of the data corpus revealed that there were three common ways in which patients challenged psychiatrists at the GIC, which are (1) by problematising their questions; (2) by disagreeing with statements that are made regarding their treatment; (3) and by initiating complaints. The findings of this study are considered in relation to the implications that they have for clinicians and for the persistence and desirability of asymmetry in clinical interaction in light of the current debates surrounding the concept of patient-centeredness. The final research paper also uses CA, in this instance to study how the topic of weight, which is often constructed and orientated towards as delicate in talk-in-interaction, is occasioned and discussed by psychiatrists and patients at the GIC. Whereas previous CA research on this topic has focused on how this is constructed by speakers as a moral issue, this paper is concerned with focusing on how psychiatrists (1) establish with patients that their weight is an issue, (2) encourage patients to lose weight by informing them that this is their responsibility and (3) offer advice on the behavior changes associated with weight loss. The results of this paper are discussed with regards to the implications that they have for clinicians who discuss the potentially delicate topic of weight with patients in a number of different settings. This project contributes towards the growing debates regarding the achievability and desirability of patient centred communication and the persistence of asymmetry in clinical interaction. It also contributes to medical conversation analytic literature to date on asymmetry and talk about weight in clinical interactions.

Dechaine, Andrew Chase. "Phenology, impact, and rearing of Lycorma delicatula (White) (Spotted Lanternfly) in Virginia." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/102930.

Full text
Abstract:
The spotted lanternfly, Lycorma delicatula (White) (Hemiptera: Fulgoridae), is a new invasive insect from Asia that is currently spreading in the Mid-Atlantic region of the US, where it has become a pest of economic concern for many industries in their invaded range. The purpose of this research was to document L. delicatula phenology in Virginia, their feeding impact to trees, and to test a rearing protocol in quarantine laboratory conditions. First, using field plots and weekly observational surveys, L. delicatula phenology was documented in 2019 and 2020 in Winchester, Virginia. I showed that L. delicatula were active from late April into November for each sampling year, and that the timing of life stage events varied only slightly between years. I also calculated cumulative average growing degree days for each life stage event using a lower developmental threshold of 10°C. Additionally, I confirmed that the host range of L. delicatula narrows as they progress through development. These results will help growers and land managers develop integrated pest management plans targeting L. delicatula. Second, dendrochronological methods were used to quantify L. delicatula feeding injury to Ailanthus altissima (Miller) Swingle (Sapindales: Simaroubaceae), Juglans nigra L. (Fagales: Juglandaceae), and Liriodendron tulipifera L. (Magnoliales: Magnoliaceae). Two sites in Pennsylvania that have experienced high populations and heavy feeding pressure from L. delicatula since 2016 were used to collect tree cores for analysis. I found evidence suggesting L. delicatula is capable of reducing the growth of A. altissima, but did not find the same evidence in the wood of the other tree species tested. Additionally, I found evidence that systemic insecticide treatments may reduce or prevent damage to A. altissima fed on by L. delicatula. Additional dendrochronological studies on the damage inflicted by L. delicatula feeding could shed light on the long-term impact of this new invasive tree pest. Lastly, a protocol for rearing L. delicatula was tested inside Virginia Tech's Insect Quarantine Laboratory. Three different cuttings of A. altissima (apical meristems, epicormic shoots, and field collected foliage) were tested to determine the best food source for L. delicatula in quarantine laboratory conditions. Overall, I did not find a significant difference between food treatments, however a greater proportion of third instars developed into fourth instars in the apical meristem treatment. I suggest future L. delicatula rearing research include the use of potted plants and/or multiple species. Though I had low success in rearing adult L. delicatula to produce egg masses, this method may prove useful for rearing early instars from eggs or sustaining field collected specimens for short durations. Research expanding our knowledge of L. delicatula will help us reach our goal of more effectively managing this pest species in the future.
Master of Science in Life Sciences
The spotted lanternfly, Lycorma delicatula (White), is a new invasive pest species impacting the eastern and northeastern regions of the United States. This insect uses its straw-like mouth parts to feed on the sap of many different plants including fruit trees, grapes, and several important ornamental and timber trees. Though they do not bite or sting, feeding can result in wilting, the growth of sooty mold, and sometimes plant mortality, making them an economic and nuisance pest in their invaded range. This research primarily focused on studying the timing of the spotted lanternfly's life cycle, feeding impact to trees, and a method for raising them in the laboratory for research purposes. The life-cycle of the spotted lanternfly was documented over two growing seasons in Winchester, VA and the timing of each life stage was shown to be similar between years. Additionally, it was confirmed that the spotted lanternfly feeds on fewer host species as it develops into an adult. Tree-ring analysis was used to identify spotted lanternfly feeding injury to tree-of-heaven, black walnut, and tulip poplar. I found evidence suggesting spotted lanternfly feeding can cause reduced growth in tree-of-heaven, but did not find similar evidence in the other species tested. A laboratory colony of spotted lanternflies would prove beneficial for additional research on this insect. I tested three different types of branches cut from the tree-of-heaven to identify the best food source for spotted lanternfly in laboratory conditions. The findings of this research will help develop pest management strategies to reduce the impact of this new pest in the US.

In the present study, six families of sulfated polysaccharides were obtained from seaweed Dictyopteris delicatula (Lamouroux, 1809) and their anticoagulant, antioxidant and antitumor activities were evaluated. All fractions showed anticoagulant activity on aPTT assay, but not on PT assay. Fractions also exhibited total antioxidant activity, superoxide radical scavenging capacity and ferric chelating property. Thus, six fractions (F0.5v, F0.7v, F1.0v, F1.3v, F1.5v e F2.0v) we obtained by proteolytic digestion, followed by acetone fractionation and molecular sieving on Sephadex G-100. Chemical analyses demonstrated that all polysaccharides contain heterofucans composed mainly of fucose, xylose, glucose, galactose, uronic acid, and sulfate. Any fractions changed the PT. However, all fractions were able on double the aPPT on a dose-dependent manner. The heterofucans F0.7v and F1.0v showed low anticoagulant activity while F1.5v presented the most prominent anticoagulant activity .When compared to Clexane?, a low molecular weight heparin, at same concentration F1.5v presented similar anticoagulant activity. The fucans F0.5v and F0.7v at 1.0 mg/mL showed high ferric chelating activity (~45%), whereas fucans F1.3v (0.5 mg/mL) showed considerable reducing power, about 53.2% of the activity of vitamin C. The fucan F1.5v presented the most prominent anticoagulant activity. The best antiproliferative activity was found with fucans F1.3v and F0.7v. However, F1.3v activity was much higher than F0.7v inhibiting almost 100% of HeLa cell proliferation. These fucans have been selected for further studies on structural characterization as well as in vivo experiments, which are already in progress

Palmquist, Helena. "Hazardous substances in wastewater systems : a delicate issue for wastewater management." Licentiate thesis, Luleå tekniska universitet, 2001. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:ltu:diva-17510.

Abstract:
Many substances derived from human activity end up in wastewater systems at some point. A large number of different substances - up to 30,000 - are present in wastewater. Some of them are valuable, such as nitrogen and phosphorus, but there are also hazardous substances such as heavy metals and anthropogenic organic substances. To be able to utilise the wastewater nutrients on arable land (agriculture, forestry or other alternatives), it is of great importance to investigate the sources of hazardous substances in wastewater and the human activities and attitudes that brings these different substances into the wastewater systems. For management of wastewater residues it is therefore important to be able to assess both the benefits and the risks from such products. Residues from wastewater are complex mixtures of substances, which demand a multi-sided approach for solving the problem as a whole.

Buckingham, Jay T. "Delicate nets, faint recollections : a study of partially connected associative network memories." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/20351.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores partially connected networks in associative memory tasks. The storage capacity of the fully connected associative net is reviewed. Simulation results demonstrate that the performance of this architecture was worse than that predicted by earlier analyses. New analysis is presented that accurately describes the behaviour of this net. A characterization of the storage capacity and information efficiency of the partially connected associative net is presented. In partially connected nets, one of the key problems is how to set the unit thresholds in such a way that the units which should not fire are quiet and those that should fire do so. New thresholding strategies are developed which enable this architecture to function well as an associative content-addressable memory. An important result is that the best thresholding strategies are functions of the firing history of an output unit and the number of active inputs impinging on it. Analysis is presented that predicts the behaviour of single and multi-layer partially connected nets using the best thresholding strategy. It shows that for a large range of parameters values the information efficiency of the partially connected net is greater than that of both the fully connected associative net and simple competitive nets.

Casey, Sarah Marie. "Drawing the delicate : an investigation of values of delicacy in contemporary fine art drawing." Thesis, Lancaster University, 2012. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.601347.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is part of a critical exploration of what it means to say a drawing is 'delicate' . Delicacy is one of the poetic, aesthetic and psychological qualities closely allied with the history and practice of drawing. Despite these widespread associations, and the increasing prominence of this sensibility in contemporary fin e art practice, delicacy as an aesthetic and critical phenomenon in drawing remains critically underexplored. The research project; of which this thesis is part, examines qualities of delicacy in detail through practice as research - the making of art works- and a scholarly investigation of contemporary concerns in drawing. The aim has been to enrich our understanding of graphic encounters, sharpen and refine our language and add substance and definition to what we understand to be delicacy. The project uses comparative material drawn from case studies in costume conservation, archaeology and medicine in order to identify shared practices in negotiating the delicate, an approach which has bought into focus values of delicacy in drawing. As a result, new forms of drawing have been developed to expand existing graphic languages, which negotiate the poetic and intellectual understandings of delicacy. In doing so they give form and definition to what may be considered as a specific aesthetic category of delicacy. The study argues that delicacy is a hermeneutic and ethical concern, both a quality of certain objects and a phenomenal, experiential quality of life which describes our uncertain and intimate concerns. The forms of drawing developed have the ability to make this palpable. As a result, drawing is presented as useful and transferrable re search tool for accessing and analysing particular qualities of lived experience

Casselden, Biddy. "A delicate balancing act : an investigation of volunteer use and stakeholder perspectives in public libraries." Thesis, Northumbria University, 2016. http://nrl.northumbria.ac.uk/30232/.

Full text
Abstract:
This research aims to investigate current volunteer use in public libraries in England. Volunteer use is not a new phenomenon, and has been an integral part of public library provision for many years. However recent Government policies, together with greater financial austerity, have resulted in a change in public service delivery. There has been a dramatic increase in the number of volunteers involved within the public library service, and the growth of community run libraries, resulting in much public and professional concern. An interpretivist research approach was used to investigate stakeholder opinions regarding volunteer use, and involved a two phase process. Initially a Delphi survey explored attitudes of 15 English public library service managers, followed by in-depth investigation of two case study library authorities, located in the North-East of England. Surveys, interviews and focus groups, helped to build a rich picture of volunteer use amongst the groups of stakeholders. Findings clearly indicated that volunteer use has moved from additionality to replacement of staff, and is increasingly being used by local authorities as a solution to budget reductions required as a result of economic austerity. A hybrid approach to library service provision has developed, using a combination of paid staff and volunteers, which indicates a fundamental culture shift within public libraries. Research results identified concerns relating to the long term viability of a hybrid approach, and how this impacted on the wider community in terms of service provision. Key concerns were raised concerning advocacy, sensitivity, the fragility of relationships, and the provision of an accountable and high quality service. Formal and informal control mechanisms need to be employed by library service managers to ensure that they reap the benefits of volunteer use, thereby avoiding social exclusion, clarifying stakeholder boundaries, and delivering a high quality accountable service. Training library managers in new volunteer management skills, and adopting a volunteer relationship management approach may help to ensure that this new arrangement is mutually beneficial for all concerned.

Abstract:
This paper describes a practice- based research project in which physical and emotional comfort and discomfort is experienced by the human body. A variety of different Comfort Zones are presented. All of them deal with the relationship between filling material and cover, in which knitted structures and materials play a central role in order to create comfort. The elasticity of the knit is challenged when creating volume and emphasizes the idea that comfort is elastic in material/physical way, as well as well in emotions. The use of filling materials gives a new dimension, sensitivity and offers new opportunities. This form exploration discusses the potential of knit to serve as a cover and decorative element, but most importantly the possibility of a textile to create its own filling. By rolling up a knitted tube, volume is built up layer by layer; a torus appears and captures a void in the center of the form, required by the tube, the fundament. Hints of discomfort are given and emphasized by either surface/structure, volume or garments on the body.

Alginate is a linear polymer compound of D-mannuronic acid(M) linked (1 ? 4) at its epimer in C-5 of L-guluronic acid (G). An alginate was isolated and partially purified from brown seaweed D. delicatula (DYN). DYN was chemically sufated (DYS). DYS showed 22% of sulfation and the rate of total sugars was around 66 and 59% for DYN and DYS respectively. DYN DYS and showed a ratio M G of 0.86 and 1.1, respectively. IR signals at 1221cm-1 confirmed the sulfation of DYS. DYN presented anticoagulant activity about intrinsic coagulation pathway, while DYS did not alter the clotting times for aPTT and PT. DYN and DYS also showed antioxidant properties especially ferric chelation where DYN reached about 97% and the OH sequestration where both averaged 85%. In 3T3 cells, DYN indicated proliferation in 24h and 48h of incubation and no cytotoxicity. For tumor lines HeLa and b16, and DYN and DYS decreased significantly the cell viability, especially after 48 hours (about 71% of inhibition). Given the results obtained in this study, it is clear that the sulfation is not decisive for the activity of D. delicatula alginate. In general, DYS and DYN shown as potential compounds to be used pharmacologically, and also in the food industry for revealing be great antioxidant.
Marine algae are rich sources of various structural compounds which recently has been increasingly studied as a new source of bioactive substances. The alginate, as come as fucans, are considered the main acidic polysaccharides found in brown seaweed. This molecule consists a linear natural polysaccharide, non-sulfated, and presents monosaccharides: acid ?-D-mannuronic (M) and ?-L-guluronic acid (G); in a vast amount compositions and threads. Alginate has been widely applied in food and pharmaceutical industries because of its ability to retain water, forming films and gels as well as thickening, stabilizing and form emulsions. In this work we aimed to extract, structurally characterize, compare and analyze the possible pharmacological activities of native alginate molecule obtained from brown seaweed Dyctiopteris delicatula (DYN), and its chemically sulfated derivative (DYS). The alginate structure and composition molecule can be proven through chemical dosing, that showed low protein contamination and high sugar level, existence and separation of M and G blocks in the descending paper chromatography, infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance. Molecule sulfation was proven with sulphate dosage, resulting in 28.56% sulphate in molecule; electrophoresis, verify metachromasia with toluidine blue; and infrared spectroscopy, that showed a characteristic band at 1221cm-1 corresponding a sulfate group vibration. For the pharmacological activities the tests was: antioxidant activity, changes in cell function (MTT test) and anticoagulant test. In the antioxidant activity we observed that DYN showed better results in the kidnapping of hydroxyl radicals and ferric chelation compared to DYS, this had the best result in the total antioxidant capacity. Both showed similar activity in reducing power and the kidnapping radicals DPPH. In MTT test DYN and DYS had not proliferative and cytotoxic activity in fibroblast cells (3T3) and showed antiproliferative and cytotoxic activity in cancer cell lines HeLa and B16 melanoma. In anticoagulant assay DYN showed good activity in the intrinsic pathway of blood coagulation, and a small activity in the extrinsic pathway, in the other hand DYS showed only a very small activity in the extrinsic pathway, but cannot come to be regarded as an anticoagulant agent. From these results it can be concluded that the alginate was extracted and sulfated, revealing a potential compound to be used in the pharmaceutical industry as an anticoagulant agent, antioxidant and antitumor and the sulfation has not been conclusively important to performance in the tested pharmacological activities

Abstract:

Internet banking has an impact on banking performance as well as customer’s daily life. Customers are getting more used to use Internet banking services because the Internet is so popular and common available, it is more convenient and comfortable for customers to use banking services on the Internet. Hereby Internet banking also helps to improve banking service and increasing banks profitability by reducing costs. It also increases the overall value of the banks services by providing convenience, reliable, faster, cheaper services. The purpose of study is to find out which services customer prefers to execute the Internet bank and which services customers prefer to execute through branch office and based on this, what combination of services are desirable for banks customers in Visby. Finding shows that young and educated people are more frequently users of Internet banking for balance inquiry and for viewing the transaction history of his/her account. For some services customers prefer to visit branch office when opining a new account, deposit money, insurances service and loan activities. Banks encourage their customers to use online services but there is need that there are some activities that customer must go to the branch office.

Abstract:
Thesis (LLM)--University of Stellenbosch, 2002.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis examines the constitutional law of equality, non-discrimination and affirmative action in Namibia, and compares it to that of South Africa and the United States. Namibian judicial interpretation in these areas seeks to balance the need to safeguard the internationally recognized human rights that the Namibian Constitution guarantees with the need to ensure that Namibian constitutional law is seen as grounded in Namibia's historical experience and culture. This latter imperative derives from the Namibian Constitution's origins in an international negotiation process, which has led to some popular criticism of the Constitution as foreign and imposed. As a result, Namibian courts have been careful to ensure that reliance on foreign precedent (where there is no local authority) does not diminish the Constitution's unique character and its suitability to the Namibian situation. To that end, the Namibian courts have given great weight to the role of current Namibian societal values in constitutional interpretation. In the areas of equality, nondiscrimination and affirmative action, Namibian courts have generally followed the South African approach, except with respect to discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. The author concludes that the adoption of the South African approach generally makes sense for Namibia, and specifically criticizes the Namibian courts' approach to sexual orientation discrimination. The statutes enacted in Namibia to carry out the Constitution's equality and nondiscrimination guarantees, including in the area of affirmative action, are also considered. While these statutes have not yet been subject to judicial interpretation, it seems likely that future cases presenting issues arising under these statutes will necessitate the same balancing referred to above. The thesis begins with an overview of each Constitution's textual treatment of equality, non-discrimination and affirmative action, and a discussion comparing the background and basic structure of the three Constitutions. It then focuses on the judicial and legislative interpretation of the concepts of equality and nondiscrimination in Namibia, as compared to that in South Africa and the US. Following that, the author discusses the judicial and legislative interpretation of the concept of affirmative action in Namibia, also as compared to that in South Africa and the United States. The thesis ends with the author's conclusions and some predictions as to how the Namibian courts might rule on certain issues that seem likely to arise in these areas in the future.

Abstract:
This thesis examines selected speculative novels by Margaret Atwood, Ursula K. Le Guin, Doris Lessing and Marge Piercy. It argues that a specifiable ecological ethic can be traced in their work – an ethic which is explored by them through the tensions between utopian and dystopian discourses. The first part of the thesis begins by theorising the concept of an ecological ethic of respect for the Other through current ecological philosophies, such as those developed by Val Plumwood. Thereafter, it contextualises the novels within the broader field of science fiction, and speculative fiction in particular, arguing that the shift from a critical utopian to a critical dystopian style evinces their changing treatment of this ecological ethic within their work. The remainder of the thesis is divided into two parts, each providing close readings of chosen novels in the light of this argument. Part Two provides a reading of Le Guin’s early Hainish novels, The Left Hand of Darkness, The Word for World is Forest and The Dispossessed, followed by an examination of Piercy’s Woman on the Edge of Time, Lessing’s The Marriages Between Zones Three, Four and Five, and Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale. The third, and final, part of the thesis consists of individual chapters analysing the later speculative novels of each author. Piercy’s He, She and It, Le Guin’s The Telling, and Atwood’s Oryx and Crake are all scrutinised, as are Lessing’s two recent ‘Ifrik’ novels. This thesis shows, then, that speculative fiction is able to realise through fiction many of the ideals of ecological thinkers. Furthermore, the increasing dystopianism of these novels reflects the greater urgency with which the problem of Othering needs to be addressed in the light of the present global ecological crisis.

Abstract:
Failure in teaching is common in Swedish school because there are teachers who do not know how to adapt the education according to the students prerequisites (Andersson & Sandgren, 2015). The purpose of the study is to investigate how high school teachers work on the difficulties of teaching through delicate negotiations. The study is based on theory of how the relationship between teacher and student is created through communication and how learning can only be done through relationships. The study is based on qualitative interviews with actors from a secondary school in a medium-sized town in Sweden. The result of the study is that delicate negotiations imply the educator's ability to create and maintain participation, attention and good relationships with students. This is evident by actors who also point out the importance of trust, safety and also the meaning of failures. The study takes place at a school and is interested in the educational work method of secondary school teachers, which demonstrates relevance to the subject of pedagogy.

In the present study, extracts rich-sulfated polysaccharides were obtained from three different species of Dictyotales (a class of brown macroalgae): Canistrocarpus cervicornis, Dictyota mertensii and Dictyopteris delicatula and their anticoagulant and antioxidant activities were evaluated. All extracts showed anticoagulant activity on aPTT assay, but not on PT assay. Extracts also exhibited total antioxidant activity, superoxide radical scavenging capacity and ferric chelating property. The extract from C. cervicornis showed the best results and was choose to have their sulfated polysaccharides fractioned and subsequently analysed. Thus, six fractions (CC-0.3, CC-0.5, CC-0.7, CC-1.0, CC-1.2 and CC-2.0) were obtained by proteolysis followed by sequential acetone precipitation. Agarose gel eletrophoresis stained with blue toluidine, confirmed the presence of sulfated polysaccharides in all fractions. Chemical analyses showed that all fractions presented heterofucans mainly constitued by fucose, galactose, glucuronic acid and sulfate. Any fraction changed the PT. However, all fractions were able to double the aPTT on a dose-dependent manner. CC- 0.3, CC-0.5, CC-0.7 and CC-1.0 needed only 0.100 mg/mL to double the aPTT, result only 1.25 times higher than the Clexane? (0.080 mg/mL), a commercial low molecular heparin. The heterofucans presented appreciable total antioxidant capacity, low capacity on scavenging hydroxyl radical and good efficiency on scavenging superoxide radicals (except CC-1.0). CC-1.2 showed 43.1 % on superoxide radical scavenging. This result was higher than that showed by the same concentration of gallic acid (41.8 %), a known antioxidant. Furthermore, the heterofucans showed excelent activity on ferrous chelating activity (except CC-0.3). CC-0.5, CC-0.7 and CC-1.0 showed the highest activities with 47.0 % of ferrous chelating activity, a result 2.0 times lesser than that exhibited by the same concentration of EDTA. These results clearly indicated the beneficial effects of heterofucans extracted from C. cervicornis as potential anticoagulant and antioxidant agents. However additional steps of purification, structural studies, besides in vivo experiments are needed for these fucans may be used as therapeutic agents

Abstract:
The dissertation studies the novel A Delicate Crime, Sérgio Sant'Anna (1996), the film almost homonym, Beto Brant (2005), the main issue of body image in the urban socio-cultural context and its representation in contemporary art. The romance of Sant'Anna welcomes, in the fictional warp, sub-themes of paramount importance, such as the place of disability on the horizon of a hedonistic culture, sexual violence (against women) and the powers of art criticism (self-justification of the distortion its purposes). The film adaptation, in turn, introduces changes in starting work that complement and enrich the novel and its issues. In the comparative exercise, the traditional discussion of the art transposition (modeled on Lessing), which implicate midia, technique and content changes, the cult of beauty and ugliness of their harassment, the limits of sensory exacerbation from the artistic use of nudity caused the incorporation of other works of art and artists the discussion of essential concepts: the abject, the contradictory, the intermediality. In the first chapter, historically circumscribe our theme, focusing on the representation of the body as a place of multiplication and relativity of meanings; the following are the contradictions panel that "excited society" of the twentieth century (Christoph Türcke, 2010) projected on the body concerned; and, finally, we proposed the theoretical expansion Horation adage - ut pictura poesis / "Poetry is like painting" - the poetic cinema (with theoretical support Claus Clüver 2011, and Wolfgang Moser, 2006). We conclude by suggesting that the questions about midia transposition propose new interpretations to literary texts, but can be much more forceful as forms of cosmetic enhancement and social criticism.

The appearance of delicate supermarket reflected the thriving of experience marketing. This goal of the study is to explore consumers’ shopping experience in delicate supermarket, and to analyze and compare the differences between each delicate supermarket. Conclusions offered supermarket managers as a reference in developing marketing strategy. This study adopted strategic experiential modules as the foundation to build up the questionnaire, which focused on consumers’ shopping experience including sense, feel, think, act, and relate; sent out 120 copies of questionnaire. The result showed that people who go to delicate supermarket are around 31 to 40, have bachelor degree, in business field and single. They visit delicate supermarket at least once a week, mostly at Friday night, and spend most of the time in imported products area. They have positive evaluation on delicate supermarkets’ space design, product display and service. Moreover, consumers have the best emotional experiences on delicate supermarkets providing various products. The ultimate purpose of experiential marketing was to create a whole experience. This study gathers five essential points for delicate marketer to use as a reference, which included the proportion of increasing imported products, adjustment of cooked food area by changing of seasons, considering both appearance and quality, market chance of organic food, and proper service and attitude. In addition, delicate supermarket has not only to continue and evolutes sense, emotion, and think experiences, but to emphases on act and relate experiences, in order to create a new living style, to generate identification and feelings of belonging among consumers, and finally, reach a balance of a whole experience. Moreover, in a condition of each delicate supermarket may have similar space design, product combination, and marketing strategy, each of them should build a unique brand characteristic and style in order to widen the market.

Title of Thesis: The Impact of Delicate Strategy on Customer Satisfaction Name of institute: National Chi Nan University Pages: 77 Graduation Time: June/2004 Degree Conferred: Master Student Name: Wang Chin-Ming Advisor Name: Hsien-Jui Chung Hsin-Mei Lin Abstract Firm strategies may captures the sustainable profit within an industry, which underlie several important concepts in marketing management such as delicate strategy, value cognition, and the gap of value cognition. Surprisingly, these have been limited empirical work on this topic, previous studies have focused on the effects among each dimension to customer satisfaction and loyalty based in a direct relationship, but ignored the indirect impacts of underlying problem through the gap of value cognition. In additional, we conducted independent dimensions for examined customer satisfaction and loyalty instead of dependent ones on discrepant degrees between expectancy and realization used by prior studies. Thus, the study investigates the influence of delicate strategy, value cognition, and the gap of value cognition on measure of customer satisfaction and loyalty, using SEM (Structural Equation Model) by LISREL software. Result clearly indicated support for the hypothesized path relationship. The direct effects of delicate strategy on customer satisfaction and loyalty were significantly positive, but relatively negative while the indirect ones affect, this finding shows differently from the previous researches or the expectation on practitioners (eg. Walters & Knee, 1989; Wallash & Dintner, 1998; Dow, 2003). The results were supportive of a social context model of the impact of marketing practices, Limitation of the study and implication for future researches are discussed. In many current face-recognition applications of video surveillance for web environment and biometric-based authentication, ill-conditioned faces such as illumination are commonly encountered and negatively impact on reliable recognition performance. To cope with ill-conditioned faces, we demonstrated that lighting compensation can significantly improve recognition performance compared with intensity-based features, such as Weberfaces. The procedure of this work is three steps. First, an efficient ligthting detector based on the proposed histogram-based lighting detection was used to classify the color face image level of lateral lighting. The second step, the RGB color channels of the face image were next transformed to the 2Ddiscrete wavelet domain. The frequency subband coefficients of the three color channels were automatically adjusted by multiplying the singular-value matrices of these frequency subband coefficient matrices with their corresponding compensation weight coefficients, Compensation coefficient based on lighting detection and corresponding Gaussian template to design. The third step, the mean and variance of the compensated color face image were further adjusted with our refined scheme to restore the true face color. Experiments are performed employing the available well-known databases such as the CMU-PIE and CMU-MULTI-PIE. Illustrative examples are given and the results compare favorably to the current results in the literature.

This thesis focus on Qin Guan’s Huaihai Ci and examines the following questions: What kind of life experiences and personal character that contribute to Qin Guan’s work ? What kind of emotions and attitudes in his work that touch the readers? How do his written works leads the readers to see the writer’s horizon and the timeless spirits? The humanistic is inevitable when dealing with literature, which enriches the value of literature research. The first chapter offers a brief overview of recent studies of Qin Guan and Huaihai Ci, clarifying the terms and versions used in this thesis as well. By revealing the current research tendency, I then confine my discussion and focus. Chapter two gives a clear description of Qin Guan’s life experience, particularly the interaction between Qin Guan and Su Shi as they were in the same literature group. Also, I discuss his writing style based on previous criticism and his best works in every genre. In Chapter three I review the development of Ci and the reasons why Qin Guan’s character matches the genre Ci. Formed by the combination of music and lyrics, Ci has been through a evolution. The discussion will focus on three aspects: the essence of Ci, the music-combined element and the way it conveys the writer’s emotions. Chapter four and Chapter five analyzes Qin Guan’s Ci. I examine Qin Guan’s writing style and discuss that how he achieved the aesthetic value by simple words. Also, I analyze that how Qin Guan depicted the affections and the scene in his Ci and combined them. The last part of Chapter five discusses that how Qin Guan conveyed space time consciousness in Ci. As the conclusion, Chapter six reviews all the discussions in the previous chapters and gives a comprehensive view of the words in Qin Guan’s Ci and its affections. Furthermore, I raise several issues for the future research.

Learning Chinese pronouncing alphbet is the essential course for elementary school children. There are thirty-seven letters in Chinese pronouncing alphobet. These letters are difficult to be distinguished by novices because some of them have similar pronunciation and shapes. Traditional teaching approaches to recognizing and pronouncing Chinese pronouncing alphabet are boservtion and repeated imitation, respectively. Such approaches are too abstract and bored to attract childremn''s interest and motivation. Hence, improving the teaching approach to Chinese pronouncing alphabet is very important to novices for learning Chinese. This thesis proposes a new teaching approach to Chinese pronouncing alphabet, called delicate tutorial, which is based on psychology, linguistics, pedagogics, and courses. The delicate tutorial covers the categories of visual imagination, pronouncing characteristics, hearing imagination, symbolism, and keyword. Each letter in Chinese pronouncing alphabet is associated with a story and game behind its semantics with respect to the categories. The story and game can give children strong impression of the corresponding letter to help their learning .In addition, this tutorial can satisfy the insufficiency of symbolism and accentuation in current teaching approaches. The evalution of the delicate tutorial is compared with the traditional approach adopted in elementary schools by experiment teaching. The experiment result shows that the delicate tutorial is better than the traditional approach in the following aspects. The first is the correct recognition of the letters in Chinese pronouncing alphabet; and the second is the precise accentuation of the letters . Among the five categories in the delicate tutorial, the performance of the hearing imagination is best, and then that of the pronouncing characteristics, symbolism, and keyword are good, The visual imagination does not performs as well as the other categories. According to the result, we will suggest the future work to overcome the shortcoming of the delicate tutorial.

(6636131), April M. Urban. "Descent's Delicate Branches: Darwinian Visions of Race and Gender in American Women's Literature, 1859-1928." Thesis, 2019.

Find full text
Abstract:

This dissertation examines Charles Darwin’s major texts together with literary works by turn-of the-century American women writers—Nella Larsen, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and Kate Chopin—in order to trace how evolutionary theory shaped transatlantic cultural ideas of race, particularly black identity, and gender. I focus on the concept of “descent” as the overarching theme organizing categories of the human in evolutionary terms. My perspective and methods—examining race and gender from a black feminist perspective that draws on biopolitics theory, as well as using close reading, affect theory, and attention to narrative in my textual analysis—comprise my argument’s framework. By bringing these perspectives and methods together in my attention to the interplay between Darwinian discourse and American literature, I shed new light on the turn-of-the-century transatlantic exchange between science and culture. Throughout this dissertation, I argue that descent constitutes a central concept and point of tension in evolutionary theory’s inscription of life’s development. I also show how themes of human-animal kinship, the Western binary of rationality and materiality, and reproduction and maternity circulated within this discourse. I contribute to scholarly work relating evolutionist discourse to literature by focusing on American literature: in the context of turn-of-the-century American anxieties about racial and gender hierarchies, the evolutionist paradigm’s configurations of human difference were especially consequential. Moreover, Larsen, Gilman, and Chopin offer responses that reveal this hierarchy’s varied effects on racialized and gendered bodies. I thus demonstrate the significance of examining Darwinian discourse alongside American literature by women writers, an association in need of deeper scholarly attention, especially from a feminist, theoretical perspective.

This dissertation begins with my application of literary analysis and close reading to Darwin’s major texts in order to uncover how they formed a suggestive foundation for late nineteenth- to early twentieth-century ideologies of race and gender. I use this analysis as the background for my investigation of Larsen’s, Gilman’s, and Chopin’s literary texts. In Chapter 1, I conduct a close reading of Darwin’s articulation of natural selection in The Origin of Speciesand focus on how Darwin’s syntactical and narrative structure imply evolution as an agential force aimed at linear progress. In Chapter 2, I analyze Darwin’s articulation of the development of race and gender differences in The Descent of Man, as well as Thomas Henry Huxley’s Evidence as to Man’s Place in Nature, and argue that Darwin’s and Huxley’s accounts suggest how anxiety over animal-human kinship was alleviated through structuring nonwhite races and women as less developed and hence inferior. In Chapter 3, I argue that Larsen’s novel Quicksand interrogates and complicates aesthetic primitivism and biopolitical racism and sexism, both rooted in evolutionist discourses. Finally, in Chapter 4, I focus on Gilman’s utopian novel Herlandand select short stories by Chopin. While Gilman unambiguously advocates for a desexualized white matriarchy, Chopin’s stories waver between support for, and critique of, racial hierarchy. Reading these authors together against the backdrop of white masculine evolutionist theory reveals how this theory roots women as materially bound reproducers of racial hierarchy.

Liu, X., P. Vahtera, Chengang Wang, J. Wang, and Yingqi Wei. "The delicate balance: Managing technology adoption and creation in multinational affiliates in an emerging economy." 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10454/11158.

Full text
Abstract:
Yes
From a perspective of the resource-based view, this paper analyses the inter-connection between technology adoption and creation in affiliates of multinational enterprises (MNEs) in an emerging economy. Operating below the international technological frontier, multinational affiliates are more motivated to adopt technologies already existent from their MNEs than create new technologies, as the former already gives them competitive advantages over local firms. When technology creation is required, multinational affiliates will adopt further technology-based resources from their MNEs as they are unavailable in an emerging economy. As a result, technology adoption is a necessary but not sufficient condition for multinational affiliates to conduct technology creation. Given that networks are particularly important for working around institutional voids in the context of an emerging economy, this paper also investigates the different roles of R&D support from internal and external networks of multinational affiliates in technology adoption and creation. Hypotheses are tested and partially supported based on unique data from 465 multinational affiliates in China.

Suyemoto, Karen L. "Therapists' conceptualizations of the function and meaning of "delicate self-cutting" in female adolescent outpatients." 1994. https://scholarworks.umass.edu/dissertations/AAI9434537.

Full text
Abstract:
The "delicate self-cutting syndrome" (Pao, 1969) refers to repetitious non-lethal cutting or scratching traditionally associated with female adolescents. While research and theory have explained the reasons for this behavior in various ways, little attempt has been made to integrate these reasons into broader models. An examination of the literature suggested eight clearly differentiable models that integrated groups of reasons: behavioral, systemic, avoidance of suicide, sexual, expression of affect, control of affect, ending depersonalization and creating boundaries. This study evaluated these models and investigated the relationships between them by surveying therapists about the conceptualizations they use to understand patients who engage in delicate self-cutting. Related developmental issues were also briefly investigated. A pretest was conducted with clinical psychology graduate students and faculty to validate the theoretical associations between specific reasons and the models used to integrate them. The main survey asked a nationwide sample of psychologists and social workers who treat adolescents and adults in individual outpatient therapy to rate a patient on the specific reasons for cutting and the integrative models. Forty-four completed surveys were analyzed. The systemic, suicide, sexual, expression, depersonalization and boundaries models were supported by a factor analysis and the generation of alpha coefficients. Examination of the patterns of relationships between and within models and individual reasons suggested that the behavior model was undifferentiable from the systems model and that the control model addressed the general need to regulate affect and was an issue underlying all other models. The expression model showed a similar patterns of relationships while maintaining its ability to be differentiated. A new structure is hypothesized with control and expression models reflecting basic underlying functions of the self-cutting behavior and the other six models reflecting more subjective meaning assignment. Results also indicated that therapists find the expression, control, depersonalization and boundaries models most useful in understanding and treating their patients. There was little support for the sexual or suicide models. Implications for therapeutic interventions and difficulties are examined in light of the new structure and therapists' preferences for certain models. Directions for future research are proposed.
