In high-speed sampling, in terms of the shift operator <I>z</I>, digital control algorithms easily become numerically illconditioned. In such situations, control algorithms based on the delta operator <I>δ</I> are useful. However, when the delta operator <I>δ</I> is applied to a control algorithm based on fixed-point arithmetic, coefficient quantization errors and product quantization errors appear. As a result, the control algorithm again becomes numerically ill-conditioned. To solve this problem, a modified delta operator <I>δ'</I> is proposed.

This paper deals with the special replacement of the shift operator and its associated z transform by delta operator and ? transform, respectively. The aim of the paper is to clarify the role of zeros of discretized linear single input single output continuous-time systems modeled by shift and delta operators. In particular, the effect of zero dynamics on the control system design based on classical pole-zero assignment in the case of both operators is considered. The analysis is illustrated by simulation results.

This study aims to reveal the provenance change near the vertex of the Yangtze delta during the late Cenozoic and provide insight into the Yangtze channelization into the sea due to regional tectonic subsidence. Heavy minerals and zircon geochronology in the Plio-Pleistocene sediments of the vertex of the modern Yangtze delta (core RGK15) reveal that a significant provenance shift occurred at ~2.6 Ma (the beginning of the Pleistocene). In this paper we calculate the particle creation as seen by a stationary observer in an anisotropic universe. By using an observer and geometry dependent time to quantize a massive scalar field we show that a discrete energy spectrum shift occurs. The length scale associated with the geometry provides the energy scale by which the spectrum is shifted. The β(p, q) coefficient for the Bogolubov transformation calculated is proportional to a series of delta functions whose argument contains p and q and half multiples of the root of the curvature.

Abstract:
In the issue of Geotema dedicated to travel (“Travel as source of geographical knowledge”), in 1997, Massimo Quaini’s article topic was “The geographical invention of verticality: for the history of the ‘discovery’ of mountains”. It concerns a fundamental segment of the history of geographical knowledge, between eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, involving both the Old and New World: Saussure in the Alps and Humboldt in the Andes. He had already worked on this same topic in other occasions, investigating institutions like CAI in Italy, and mountain’s role in the ‘official’ geography. Such lectures mark a path that, I think, finds a theoretical output in 2006 Parma conference, dedicated to the “end of the travel”, where Quaini spoke about “Between Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century: the travel and the new paradigm of geography”: a rich and problematic lecture, opening to further researches. But perhaps before this point of arrival, the new paradigm, I would suggest to think on an idea offered by the Geotema article, where we read: “so, if we want to fully speak of discovering the mountains it will be necessary that the culture of the outside travellers meet that of the mountaineers”. Actually, in Quaini's last lecture I take into consideration, the one at Forte di Bard in September 2006, his attention shifts definitely on the figures of alpine travellers, who may encounter knowledge acquired from local culture.

Abstract:
The Niger Delta in Nigeria is the largest wetland in Africa and the third largest mangrove forest in the world. The region is known for its richness in biodiversity as well as its oil and gas resources. Due to the high level of oil exploration, deforestation, hunting and insecurities in these areas, the wildlife especially endemic species like the Niger Delta red colobus becomes vulnerable to extinction. Most researches on their range have noted a significant reduction in their population and range distribution. Hence, up-to-date information on their current status is paramount to ensure proper and urgent conservation measures. Data was obtained through the use of field survey and secondary data. The species was recently discovered endemic to Niger delta region in Nigeria for about 23 years ago and recent studies observed that there has been a drastic reduction in their population and a shift in the range they formally occupied faulting this to anthropogenic activities. This study revealed that the location is under intense timber extraction and hunting and as a result, one of the location in the Apoi creek where it was reported to be present, record no species of Red colobus monkey. Only the red capped mangabey monkey (3) were sighted at the location with some evidence of alligator (10). Result also revealed that most of the communities (age ≤ 30) do not know or have seen the species. The situation at the location is exacerbated because of the level of poverty and insecurity in the areas. Going by the evidence of intense timber extraction and hunting at the location, the number of this species may have drastically reduced compared to what it was formally projected (±200 individuals). It is therefore strongly recommended that a follow up of the research is done in other location where it was reported to be present.

Due to the importance of the concept of independent variable modification, the definition of linear-time-invariant system, and their implications for discrete-time signal processing, Chapter 11 presents basic deterministic continuous-time signals and systems. These signals, expressed in the form of functions and functionals such as the Dirac delta function, are used throughout the book for deterministic and stochastic signal analysis, in both the continuous-time and the discrete-time domains. The definition of the autocorrelation function, and an explanation of the convolution procedure in linear-time-invariant systems, are presented in detail, due to their importance in communication systems analysis and synthesis. A linear modification of the independent continuous variable is presented for specific cases, like time shift, time reversal, and time and amplitude scaling.

Abstract:
Within the context of a fast-evolving environment, leaders enhance their capacity to respond to exponential change by attending to enduring ideas and big questions. For higher education leaders, a core asset is the diversity of their institutions. In this chapter, the authors first examine the landscape of current and forecasted changes related to enrollment, technology, the 2020 global pandemic, and impending leadership succession. This sets up a discussion of critical climate challenges regarding the cost of higher education and the value of job skills. The perceived value proposition for higher education is further complicated by concerns regarding the political influence of colleges and universities on their students. Whereas these landscape and environment analyses could lead to concerns regarding future, we have cause to be optimistic. Within the context of political polarization, leaders will need to be advocates of inclusive equity and stewards of both deeply held academic ideals and pragmatic strategies that ensure students success and preparation for careers.

Abstract:
The 1970s were marked by dramatic changes in government policies during the governorship of Sir Murray MacLehose. The New Territories became the locus of a planned population shift away from crowded Hong Kong and Kowloon, and the idea of ‘New Towns’, based on Tsuen Wan’s developments, was central. It went hand-in-hand with infrastructural developments, which revolutionized transportation and ended the relative isolation of Tsuen Wan through the MTR. The administration of Tsuen Wan fundamentally changed and the creation of District Boards (later Councils), beginning first in Tsuen Wan, altered the system of political consultation throughout Hong Kong. The 1980s were marked by dramatic changes in economic policies within China, not least in the areas of China adjacent to Hong Kong, which saw industrialization through the Pearl River delta region and de-industrialization in Tsuen Wan. Emergence of a distinctive Hong Kong identity, and a new political culture, emerged as sovereignty over Hong Kong was resumed by China in 1997. Tsuen Wan changed from the working class town that it has been into one dominated by middle class housing developments, much like the rest of Hong Kong, although the villages of the original inhabitants remained.

Abstract:
Violence in Nigeria has a tendency to shape-shift - from violent crimes, such as kidnapping and robbery, to various expressions of political violence, such as terrorism and insurgency, as well as police and military brutality. Indeed, because of this, it’s difficult to talk about one type of violence without appreciating not only how it relates to specific contextual conditions but also to other forms of violence, which often overlap each other. Since Nigeria returned to civilian rule in 1999 the term ‘terrorism’ has increasingly been a part of the national discourse on security. On the one hand, the government refers to countering terrorism within the framework of its national security agenda while on the other hand, insurgent movements, namely those that have emerged in the southern Niger Delta region as well as the northeast, have increasingly used terrorism as one of many tactics within their violent campaigns. Though one can certainly make the argument that terrorism in Nigeria has been a growing concern, particularly in the last decade, analysis tends to look at the phenomenon in isolation rather than considering how it is connected to other forms of violence, and more importantly, how state responses to organized violence drive non-state groups to adopt new tactics and escalate conflict. To fill this gap this article will look at how terrorism is understood and experienced in Nigeria and how its conceptualization shapes the practice of counter-terrorism. Our analysis will capture both international and domestic factors - including the impact of 9/11 and subsequent EU and US efforts to counter terrorism in Nigeria - as well domestic realities, namely the societal impact of Nigeria's 1999 transformation from long military to democratic rule as well as the more recent insurgencies in the Niger Delta (2005-2009) and in the northeast (2009-present). Combined, analyzing the domestic and international considerations over a 15-year time period will allow us to trace how the conceptualization of terrorism and practice of counter-terrorism has changed over time.

Fabio Besta, Professor at Ca’ Foscari for almost fifty years, was the best-known and most eminent figure among the Italian accounting scholars. His pivotal contribution to the development of the subject encompassed the upgrading shift of accounting from technique to theory, his equity-based accounting system to be applied to the double-entry bookkeeping as well as the related ‘value-based’ accounting theory, the introduction of a new conception of business firm and combination of inductive (empirical) and historical research method. In order to convey the sometimes abstruse theological points of the texts, along with their emotional charge, librettists and composers had recourse to a variety of metrical and formal designs, the former via the alternation among poetic lines, and the latter by means of local shifts in pitch center, here considered using seventeenth-century tonal theory (“church-keys/tuoni”) as a heuristic frame. In this context, laments by various characters were marked by devices not familiar from the lexicon of contemporary Venetian opera (descending bass patterns), but rather by surprising metric or tonal changes. Many of these are evident from a 1684 piece that portrayed the power of words and tears in lamenting Christ, Il Segno della humana salute.
