Abstract:
The binding data for oxygenation of human hemoglobin, Hb, at various temperatures and in the absence and presence of 2,3-diphosphoglycerate, DPG, and inositol hexakis phosphate, IHP, were analyzed for extraction of mean intrinsic Gibbs free energy, DeltaGo, enthalpy, DeltaHo, and entropy, DeltaSo, of binding at various partial oxygen pressures. This method of analysis considers all the protein species present such as dimer and tetramer forms which were not considered by Imai et al. (Imai K et al., 1970, Biochim Biophys Acta 200: 189-196), in their analysis which was based on Adair equation. In this regard, the values of Hill equation parameters were estimated with high precision at all points of the binding curve and used for calculation of DeltaGo, DeltaHo and DeltaSo were also calculated by analysis of DeltaGo values at various temperatures using van't Hoff equation. The results represent the enthalpic nature of the cooperativity in Hb oxygenation and the compensation effect of intrinsic entropy. The interpretation of results also to be, into account the decrease of the binding affinity of sites for oxygen in the presence of DPG and IHP without any considerable changes in the site-site interaction (extent of cooperativity). In other words, the interactions between bound ligands, organic phosphates and oxygen, are more due to a decreasing binding affinity and not to the reduction of the cooperative interaction between sites. The results also document the more heterotropic effect of IHP compared to DPG.

Abstract:
Background To identify fluid responsiveness, a correlation between respiratory variations in pulse pressure (DeltaPP) and respiratory variations in pulse oximetry photoplethysmographic waveform amplitude (DeltaPOP) in mechanically ventilated patients has been demonstrated. To evaluate the agreement between the two methods, knowledge about the repeatability of the methods is imperative. However, no such data exist. Based on knowledge of slow oscillation in skin blood flow, the authors hypothesized that the variability of DeltaPOP would be larger than that of DeltaPP when calculations were performed continuously over a long recording period. Methods Respiration, continuous invasive blood pressure, pulse oximetry, and skin microcirculation were recorded in 14 mechanically ventilated intensive care unit patients. No intravenous fluid challenges were given, and no other interventions were performed during the measurements. Seventy consecutive comparisons between DeltaPP and DeltaPOP were calculated for each of the 14 patients. Results For all patients, DeltaPOP was 13.7 +/- 5.8% and DeltaPP was 5.8 +/- 2.6% (P < 0.001). There was a larger intraindividual (8.94 vs. 1.29; P < 0.001) and interindividual (26.01 vs. 5.57; P < 0.001) variance of DeltaPOP than of DeltaPP. In six patients, there was no significant correlation between DeltaPP and DeltaPOP. A Bland-Altman plot showed poor agreement between the two methods. Conclusion A large variability of DeltaPOP and a poor agreement between DeltaPP and DeltaPOP limits DeltaPOP as a tool for evaluation of fluid responsiveness in intensive care unit patients. This is in contrast to DeltaPP, which shows a small variability.

Abstract:
Background Respiratory variations in pulse oximetry plethysmographic waveform amplitude (DeltaPOP) are related to respiratory variations in pulse pressure (DeltaPP) and are sensitive to changes in preload. The authors hypothesized that DeltaPOP can predict fluid responsiveness in mechanically ventilated patients during general anesthesia. Methods Twenty-five patients referred for cardiac surgery were studied after induction of general anesthesia. Hemodynamic data (cardiac index, central venous pressure, pulmonary capillary wedge pressure, DeltaPP, and DeltaPOP) were recorded before and after volume expansion (500 ml hetastarch, 6%). Fluid responsiveness was defined as an increase in cardiac index of 15% or greater. Results Volume expansion induced changes in cardiac index (2.0+/-0.4 to 2.3+/-0.5 mmHg; P<0.05), DeltaPP (11+/-7 to 6+/-5%; P<0.05), and DeltaPOP (12+/-9 to 7+/-5%; P<0.05). DeltaPOP and DeltaPP were higher in responders than in nonresponders (17+/-8 vs. 6+/-4 and 14+/-7 vs. 6+/-4%, respectively; P<0.05 for both). A DeltaPOP greater than 13% before volume expansion allowed discrimination between responders and nonresponders with 80% sensitivity and 90% specificity. There was a significant relation between DeltaPOP before volume expansion and percent change in cardiac index after volume expansion (r=0.62; P<0.05). Conclusions DeltaPOP can predict fluid responsiveness noninvasively in mechanically ventilated patients during general anesthesia. This index has potential clinical applications.

Abstract:
Expression of the proapoptotic protein Bax under the control of a GAL10 promoter in Saccharomyces cerevisiae resulted in galactose-inducible cell death. Immunofluorescence studies suggested that Bax is principally associated with mitochondria in yeast cells. Removal of the carboxyl-terminal transmembrane (TM) domain from Bax [creating Bax (deltaTM)] prevented targeting to mitochondrial and completely abolished cytotoxic function in yeast cells, suggesting that membrane targeting is crucial for Bax-mediated lethality. Fusing a TM domain from Mas70p, a yeast mitochondrial outer membrane protein, to Bax (deltaTM) restored targeting to mitochondria and cytotoxic function in yeast cells. Deletion of four well-conserved amino acids (IGDE) from the BH3 domain of Bax ablated its ability to homodimerize and completely abrogated lethality in yeast cells. In contrast, several Bax mutants which retained ability to homodimerize (deltaBH1, deltaBH2, and delta1-58) also retained at least partial lethal function in yeast cells. In coimmunoprecipitation experiments, expression of the wild-type Bax protein in Rat-1 fibroblasts and 293 epithelial cells induced apoptosis, whereas the Bax (deltaIGDE) mutant failed to induce apoptosis and did not associate with endogenous wild-type Bax protein. In contrast to yeast cells, Bax (deltaTM) protein retained cytotoxic function in Rat-1 and 293 cells, was targeted largely to mitochondria, and dimerized with endogenous Bax in mammalian cells. Thus, the dimerization-mediating BH3 domain and targeting to mitochondrial membranes appear to be essential for the cytotoxic function of Bax in both yeast and mammalian cells.

Abstract:
Notch-mediated cellular interactions are known to regulate cell fate decisions in various developmental systems. A previous report indicated that monocytes express relatively high amounts of Notch-1 and Notch-2 and that the immobilized extracellular domain of the Notch ligand, Delta-1 (Deltaext-myc), induces apoptosis in peripheral blood monocytes cultured with macrophage colony-stimulating factor (M-CSF), but not granulocyte-macrophage CSF (GM-CSF). The present study determined the effect of Notch signaling on monocyte differentiation into macrophages and dendritic cells. Results showed that immobilized Deltaext-myc inhibited differentiation of monocytes into mature macrophages (CD1a+/−CD14+/− CD64+) with GM-CSF. However, Deltaext-myc permitted differentiation into immature dendritic cells (CD1a+CD14−CD64−) with GM-CSF and interleukin 4 (IL-4), and further differentiation into mature dendritic cells (CD1a+CD83+) with GM-CSF, IL-4, and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α). Notch signaling affected the differentiation of CD1a−CD14+macrophage/dendritic cell precursors derived in vitro from CD34+ cells. With GM-CSF and TNF-α, exposure to Deltaext-myc increased the proportion of precursors that differentiated into CD1a+CD14− dendritic cells (51% in the presence of Deltaext-myc versus 10% in control cultures), whereas a decreased proportion differentiated into CD1a−CD14+ macrophages (6% versus 65%). These data indicate a role for Notch signaling in regulating cell fate decisions by bipotent macrophage/dendritic precursors.

Abstract:
Protective immunity against larval Taenia crassiceps has been shown to rely on T cells; however, the roles of the specific subsets of T cells during infection are not known. To investigate a possible role for γδT cells, this study investigated larval infection in δ-chain knock-out C57BL/6 (deltaKO) and wild-type C57BL/6 mice. It was found that deltaKO mice and C57BL/6 mice were equally susceptible to infection suggesting γδT cells do not play a major role in protective immunity. Cytokine production by concanavalin A (ConA)-stimulated spleen cells from infected deltaKO mice and C57BL/6 mice were determined. All infected mice demonstrated an increased IL-10 production suggesting a Th1-inhibitory function. Cells from infected deltaKO mice and C57BL/6 mice did not show increases in IL-4 production. Heavily-infected C57BL/6 mice showed a decrease in IFN-γ production compared to deltaKO mice. These observations suggest that an increase in IL-10 production best correlates with a non-protective immune response. To make comparisons between in vitro cytokine production and systemic immune responses, cytokine levels in serum were determined. C57BL/6 mice and deltaKO mice showed increases in serum levels of IL-4 and IFN-γ at 52 days post-infection. The systemic immune response of these mice, therefore, is a mixed Th1/Th2-type response and γδT cells are apparently not responsible for the systemic increases in these cytokines.

Abstract:
Many lightweight materials, including aluminum alloy, magnesium alloy, and plastic, have been used for automotives. Aluminum alloy—the most commonly utilized lightweight metal—has poor resistance spot weldability owing to its inherent properties, which demand the development of welding solutions. Various welding techniques are utilized to improve the resistance spot weldability of aluminum alloy, including DeltaSpot welding. However, the technological development for welding dissimilar metals (aluminum alloy and steel) required for vehicle body assembly is still in its nascent stages. This study proposes DeltaSpot welding (a resistance spot welding process with spooling process tapes) using the alloy combination of 6000 series aluminum alloy (Al 6K32) and 440 MPa grade steel (SGARC 440). The welding characteristics of the main process parameters in DeltaSpot welding were analyzed and the weldability of the combination of the aluminum alloy, Al 6K32, and 440 MPa grade steel was evaluated. In addition, the characteristics of the intermetallic compound layer between the 440 MPa grade steel and Al 6K32 sheets were identified via scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS).

Abstract:
Freshwater crayfish, Austropotamobius pallipes, caught in the winter when water temperature was 5 &deg;C, were acclimated in the laboratory to 5 &deg;C for 1 week and to 1 and 12 &deg;C for 1 month before haemolymph and tissue samples were taken for acid&shy;base analysis. In vivo, haemolymph (extracellular) pH increased by 0.14 units between 5 and 1 &deg;C but remained unchanged between 5 and 12 &deg;C, giving an overall deltapHe/deltat value of -0.009 pH units &deg;C-1 and an [H+] value of +3.3 nmol l-1. Haemolymph withdrawn from crayfish acclimated to 1 &deg;C and warmed anaerobically in vitro to 12 &deg;C had a deltapHe/deltat value of -0.010 pH units &deg;C-1. This was depressed compared with the values of -0.015 and -0.016 pH units &deg;C-1 obtained from haemolymph withdrawn from crayfish held at 5 and 12 &deg;C, respectively, but changes in H+ concentration were similar in all three groups. There was little change in intracellular pH with rise in temperature in either claw muscle (deltapHi/deltat=-0.003 pH units &deg;C-1) or hepatopancreas (deltapHi/deltat=-0.006 pH units &deg;C-1). In the heart, deltapHi/deltat paralleled that in the haemolymph (-0.010 pH units &deg;C-1), but the largest change was found in the abdominal muscle (-0.025 pH units &deg;C-1). In all tissues apart from claw muscle, there was a metabolic acidosis, with an increase in metabolic acid load as temperature rose from 1 to 12 &deg;C. The depressed in vivo deltapHe/deltat value and the differences in deltapHi/deltat between the tissues were attributed to active regulation of pHi, possibly to control enzyme function in the intracellular compartments. Tissues that are functionally important in the winter months, such as abdominal muscle, followed alphastat regulation, whereas tissues that are less active in the winter, such as claw muscle and hepatopancreas, maintained pHi irrespective of temperature, resulting in a relatively acidotic pHi, which may serve to depress the activity of metabolic enzymes.

Abstract:
<p>Pepper yellow leaf curl disease caused by Pepper yellow leaf curl Indonesia virus (PepYLCIV) has become a challenge to chili pepper cultivation. Development of resistant variety by utilizing recessive resistance gene is expected to control the disease in the field. This study aimed to validate three plant genes, namely deltaCOP, hsc70, and BAM1, in PepYLCIV infection by applying Virus-induced Gene Silencing (VIGS) in a model plant, wild type Nicotiana benthamiana. PepYLCIV and construct of Tobacco rattle virus (TRV) which induced silencing of each gene were co-inoculated into N. benthamiana plants through agroinfiltration. Gene expression and the relative amount of viral DNA were determined by quantitative reverse transcription PCR (qRT-PCR) and quantitative PCR (qPCR), respectively, at 15 days post inoculation. The results showed a decreased level of deltaCOP, hsc70, and BAM1 expressions to 66.4%, 53.0%, and 47.0%, respectively, compared to that in the control (100%). Silencing of the three genes decreased the accumulation of PepYLCIV to 0.1%, 18.4%, and 63.0%, respectively, compared to that in the control. deltaCOP and hsc70 genes were indicated to be involved in the viral infection and could be good candidate genes for obtaining chili pepper varieties resistant to PepYLCIV. This result affirmed that the reverse genetics technique could be an alternative approach for identifying plant genes involved in viral infection, including PepYLCIV. The use of an infectious clone in this study allows the virus inoculations could be carried out without rearing and maintaining its natural vector, hence reduces the risk of virus transmission to healthy plants.</p>

Abstract:
In Drosophila, cells are thought to be singled out for a neural fate through a competitive mechanism based on lateral inhibition mediated by Delta-Notch signalling. In tetrapod vertebrates, nascent neurons express the Delta1 gene and thereby deliver lateral inhibition to their neighbours, but it is not clear how these cells are singled out within the neurectoderm in the first place. We have found four Delta homologues in the zebrafish--twice as many as reported in any tetrapod vertebrate. Three of these--deltaA, deltaB and deltaD--are involved in primary neurogenesis, while two--deltaC and deltaD--appear to be involved in somite development. In the neural plate, deltaA and deltaD, unlike Delta1 in tetrapods, are expressed in large patches of contiguous cells, within which scattered individuals expressing deltaB become singled out as primary neurons. By gene misexpression experiments, we show: (1) that the singling-out of primary neurons, including the unique Mauthner cell on each side of the hindbrain, depends on Delta-Notch-mediated lateral inhibition, (2) that deltaA, deltaB and deltaD all have products that can deliver lateral inhibition and (3) that all three of these genes are themselves subject to negative regulation by lateral inhibition. These properties imply that competitive lateral inhibition, mediated by coordinated activities of deltaA, deltaB and deltaD, is sufficient to explain how primary neurons emerge from proneural clusters of neuroepithelial cells in the zebrafish.

Abstract:
AbstractThe biplanar diode arrays Delta4PT and Delta4+ has been used in our hospital since the introduction of the TomoTherapy in 2013 to ensure a good agreement between the calculated and the measured dose distributions in patient-related QA with helical TomoTherapy. The aim of this presentation is to evaluate the quality of the measurement procedure with the Delta4 phantoms Delta4PT and (since January 2016) Delta4+. This includes the influence of a cross calibration with a treatment plan with low modulation. Two analyses were performed: (i) All treatment plans in a period of three months (n=86) were not only calculated and measured with Delta4PT or Delta4+ but also with an ionization chamber (Exradin A1SL) in the homogeneous “cheese phantom”. (ii) All data measured from January 2016 to April 2017 (Delta4+, n=132) were analyzed regarding median dose deviation, Gamma analysis and others. The comparison with chamber measurements shows that all measurements with Delta4 and almost all with the ionization chambers (79 of 86) yield a deviation of measured vs. planned dose in the PTV of less than 2.5%, but with a lower variation of the Delta4 measurements. However, a strong correlation between both was not observed. The separate analysis of the measurements with the newer Delta4+ (since January 2016) shows a mean dose deviation in the PTVs of only 0.14% with a standard deviation (S.D.) of 0.69%. Before every measurement a cross calibration has been performed. Without this cross calibration, the deviation would be 0.96% with an increased standard deviation of 0.93%.It is concluded that the Delta4 systems are well suited for patient-related QA for helical TomoTherapy treatment plans. The comparison with chamber measurements shows a plausible accordance between both systems whereas the variation of single measurements is quite different. With the help of a daily cross calibration the variability of the Delta4 results is further decreased and the results show higher accuracy and reliability. According to our experience, a daily cross calibration is mandatory for a reliable patient-related QA.

Abstract:
In a previous study, it was reported that hemodialysis with dialysate [K+] (KD) of 1.0 or 2.0 mmol/L caused an increase in BP shortly after completion of treatment due to arteriolar constriction. With this background, it was hypothesized that a low KD might decrease dialysis efficiency by a similar mechanism. To evaluate this hypothesis, paired observations of two consecutive 3-h treatments, with KD of 1.0 or 3.0 mmol/L, were performed in 14 stable end-stage renal disease patients. A KD of 1.0 mmol/L resulted in lower values for both urea reduction ratio and Kt/V evaluated at completion of dialysis and 1 h thereafter. Values at equilibrium were urea reduction ratio 42+/-1% versus 47+/-2% (P < 0.02), Kt/V 0.65+/-0.03 versus 0.73+/-0.03 (P < 0.02) for KD 1.0 or 3.0 mmol/L, respectively. The mechanisms responsible for the observed differences in dialysis efficiency were examined using a urea kinetics model that predicts urea sequestration caused by impaired blood flow to urea-rich tissues. For this purpose, urea rebound and its effect on Kt/V (by means of deltaKt/V, calculated as equilibrated minus single pool value) with KD 1.0 and 3.0 mmol/L were assessed. Greater urea rebound, 12.8+/-1.6% versus 8.6+/-1.4% (P < 0.001), and larger deltaKt/V, 0.12+/-0.01 versus 0.10+/-0.02 (P < 0.02), were observed with KD 1.0 mmol/L compared with 3.0 mmol/L. The theoretical model accurately predicted the deltaKt/V observed with KD 1.0 mmol/L. It is concluded that a low KD decreases dialysis efficiency. This effect is likely caused by reduced blood perfusion to nonvisceral organs, largely skeletal muscle. Conversely, hemodialysis with KD 3.0 mmol/L facilitates tissue perfusion, minimizes urea trapping in poorly perfused areas, and improves the efficiency of this treatment modality.

Comparison among eight pseudocheirid species and two outgroup petaurids were made by means of the hydroxyapatite chromatography method of DNA hybridisation. Matrices of DELTAT(m) and DELTAT(m)H-C values were analysed with the FITCH algorithm in Felsenstein's PHYLIP (Version 3.3). Jackknifing and bootstrapping were applied to determine the stability of resulting topologies. All the phylogenetic analyses produced trees that support (1) the monophyly of the Pseudocheirus herbertensis complex, (2) the monophyly of Pseudocheirus, (3) a close relationship between Hemibelideus and Petauroides, and (4) a close relationship between Pseudochirops archeri and Pseudochirops cupreus. Rates of single-copy DNA evolution are slightly faster in Pseudocheirus, Hemibelideus, and Petauroides than in Pseudochirops. Hybridisation evidence also provides a framework for understanding the timing of the pseudocheirid radiation and suggests that the divergence between extant genera dates back to about 36 million years ago.

Abstract:
The Raf family of protein kinases display differences in their abilities to promote the entry of quiescent NIH 3T3 cells into the S phase of the cell cycle. Although conditional activation of deltaA-Raf:ER promoted cell cycle progression, activation of deltaRaf-1:ER and deltaB-Raf:ER elicited a G1 arrest that was not overcome by exogenously added growth factors. Activation of all three deltaRaf:ER kinases led to elevated expression of cyclin D1 and cyclin E and reduced expression of p27Kip1. However, activation of deltaB-Raf:ER and deltaRaf-1:ER induced the expression of p21Cip1, whereas activation of deltaA-Raf:ER did not. A catalytically potentiated form of deltaA-Raf:ER, generated by point mutation, strongly induced p21Cip1 expression and elicited cell cycle arrest similarly to deltaB-Raf:ER and deltaRaf-1:ER. These data suggested that the strength and duration of signaling by Raf kinases might influence the biological outcome of activation of this pathway. By titration of deltaB-Raf:ER activity we demonstrated that low levels of Raf activity led to activation of cyclin D1-cdk4 and cyclin E-cdk2 complexes and to cell cycle progression whereas higher Raf activity elicited cell cycle arrest correlating with p21Cip1 induction and inhibition of cyclin-cdk activity. Using green fluorescent protein-tagged forms of deltaRaf-1:ER in primary mouse embryo fibroblasts (MEFs) we demonstrated that p21Cip1 was induced by Raf in a p53-independent manner, leading to cell cycle arrest. By contrast, activation of Raf in p21Cip1(-/-) MEFs led to a robust mitogenic response that was similar to that observed in response to platelet-derived growth factor. These data indicate that, depending on the level of kinase activity, Raf can elicit either cell cycle progression or cell cycle arrest in mouse fibroblasts. The ability of Raf to elicit cell cycle arrest is strongly associated with its ability to induce the expression of the cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor p21Cip1 in a manner that bears analogy to alpha-factor arrest in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. These data are consistent with a role for Raf kinases in both proliferation and differentiation of mammalian cells.

Abstract:
Early warning system (EWS) via digital television (TV) in Indonesia is still un-optimal in design and implementation due to the absent of clear standard/guidance to follow across the country. This paper studies various EWS based on digital TV of Japan, Korea, and the United States of America (USA). Although the systems look like different, the EWS can be simplified into 3 nodes representing (i) Emergency Agency, (ii) TV broadcaster, and (iii) TV receiver. Beside the 3-node-based EWS, this paper evaluates the possibilities of EWS having 4 nodes. We perform computer simulations to evaluate the latency and bit error rate (BER) performances under additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and frequency-flat Rayleigh fading channels. We found that the system latency and BER performances of EWS are highly affected by (i) the distance of one node to another and (ii) the number of nodes, where EWS with 3 or 4 nodes found to be enough and suitable for Indonesia digital TV. We propose a criterion of good EWS, i.e., total delay T <= t + 4.delta.t with t and delta.t being the propagation delay and processing time, respectively, and BER less than Pb=10-3. The result of this paper are expected to be used as a reference for the Indonesia EWS systems.

Abstract:

Color differences (DeltaL, Deltaa, Deltab, and DeltaE) were calculated for samples with luting agents and for samples without luting agents with standard white and black backgrounds, with the use of a spectrophotometer, Luci 100 (Dr. Lange, Berlin, Germany). One-way ANOVA for DeltaL, Deltaa, Deltab, and DeltaE within both the AC systems, with and without luting agents, showed significant contributions of the background (p < 0.05). EMP was seen to be more translucent than ICA. Darker ceramics showed less color variation. Luting agents altered the final color of the restoration. ZNPO was least translucent, followed by GIC and COMP. Marginal increases in thicknesses of ICA samples (0.4 mm) do not show a statistically significant color difference. No method exists to predict the outcome of an AC restoration based on consideration of the luting agent and the background color.

Abstract:
Electrically conditioned skeletal muscle can provide the continuous power source for cardiac assistance devices. Optimization of the available sustained power from in vivo skeletal muscle requires knowledge of its metabolic utilization and constraints. A thermistor-based technique has been developed to measure temperature changes and to provide a relative estimate for metabolic utilization of in situ rabbit soleus muscle. The relative thermistor response, active tension and muscle displacement were measured during cyclic isometric and isotonic contractions across a range of muscle tensions and contraction durations. The thermistor response demonstrated linear relationships versus both contraction duration at a fixed muscle length and active tension at a fixed contraction duration (r(2)=0.90+/−0.14 and 0.70+/−0.21, respectively; means +/− s.d.). A multiple linear regression model was developed to predict normalized thermistor response, DeltaT, across a range of conditions. Significant model variables were identified using a backward stepwise regression procedure. The relationships for the in situ muscles were qualitatively similar to those reported for mammalian in vitro muscle fiber preparations. The model had the form DeltaT=C+at(c)F+bW, where the constant C, and coefficients for the contraction duration t(c) (ms), normalized active tension F and normalized net work W were C=−1.00 (P&lt;0.001), a=5.97 (P&lt;0.001) and b=2.12 (P&lt;0.001).

Abstract:
This study tested the hypothesis that dissipative efficiency of tropical tree species could be an ecological advantage in the forest succession process. Daily leaf gas exchanges of a pioneer species (Guazuma ulmifolia) and a late successional species (Cariniana legalis) were evaluated under well-irrigated conditions and by withholding irrigation. Analyses of network connectance (Cg) and plant autonomy (At) were carried out in order to assess metabolic network changes in response to environmental perturbation. As a global estimation of latent heat dissipation, the capacity to both maintain and cool leaf temperature in response to air temperature changes (deltaT = TºCair - TºCleaf) was evaluated. The changes observed in both the systemic parameters (Cg and At) and the physiological ones brought about by water deficit, associated with discrepant growth rates between both species, suggested that the initial formation of gap canopies composed by pioneer species could simply be a result of the higher photosynthetic rates of these species, and not necessarily because late successional species cannot cope with such a heterogeneous environment as that of a gap. Our results indicate that, in the absence of water constraints, the highest CO2 assimilation rates of pioneer species are supported by the efficiency of the whole dissipative structure, involving both degradation and dissipative processes. As a practical result, our study suggests the deltaT analysis in order to evaluate the efficiency of dissipative structures and as a aid in characterizing functional groups.
