Abstract:
This study aims to establish a depositional framework for an area of the Louisiana shelf, north-central Gulf of Mexico. The depositional history of the study area is poorly understood, especially within the last cycle of major eustatic fluctuation (~18, 000 yrs BP – present). Data sets used in this study include pre-existing and previously unanalyzed two-dimensional, highresolution seismic profile records (Acadiana 86 and Acadiana 89), geotechnical foundation boring data (Coleman and Roberts, 1988a), and an industry lease block survey report (Cole, 1983). With the rising demand for fossil fuels, Northern Canada has seen an unprecedented increase in petrochemical development. These developments are often associated with emissions of PAHs, a group of hydrophobic organic contaminants that are known to be carcinogenic and otherwise harmful to humans. Due to their hydrophobic nature, PAHs tend to bind to organic matter and can be produced through both anthropogenic and natural processes, making them ubiquitous in the environment. Therefore, in addition to impacts from petrochemical developments, changes to climatic conditions, such as increased fore

The Point Lookout Sandstone undergoes an abrupt transition from strandplain-dominated to deltaic-dominated deposition in the northwestern part of the San Juan Basin near Durango, Colorado. The onset of deltaic deposition is preceded by a base level fall and development of a Type 2 sequence boundary as evidenced by a basinward shift in shoreline facies expressed as distributary channel sandstones overlying shoreface deposits. This research investigates the character and significance of shelf-edge deltas within the sedimentary source-to-sink system, and how variability at the shelf edge leads to different styles of deep-water deposition. Because the shelf-edge represents one of the key entry points for terrigenous sediment to be delivered into the deep water, understanding of the sedimentary processes in operation at these locations, and the character of sediment transported through these deltas is critical to understanding of deep-water sedimentary systems. Ice cores are a valuable component with regards to paleoclimate reconstruction due to the ability to use stable water isotopic concentrations in ice as a proxy for paleo-temperature records. It is therefore important to understand the processes and conditions under which isotopic concentrations can be altered after ice has formed. Historically, sublimation has been considered to only have a trivial impact on the isotopic record in glacial ice due to the low diffusivity of solid ice (~10-15 m2 s-1).
