Abstract:
This chapter explores how Staël combined a series of observations on the immediate situation of France with more theoretical considerations, in this case a reformulation of the theory of representative government. This tendency to combine a theoretical perspective with pressing practical considerations is typical of Staël's writings about politics: it is precisely the fluctuation between these two registers that gives her prose its distinctively breathless, uneven pace, alternating passages of terse analysis with urgent perorations. For Staël, the most difficult problem created by the Revolution was how to bridge the gap between a set of abstract notions and their application, between the demand for individual rights and popular sovereignty, and the means by which this demand might be converted into viable political institutions.

Abstract:
With branches in South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, and several smaller offices in other countries, OUP books were marketed and distributed throughout the African continent. A number of challenges, differing in scope and essence, confronted publishers operating in Africa, but the enormous potential of the market, especially for schoolbooks, offered the opportunity for significant growth. The African branches developed some innovative programmes of general and academic publishing and represented some high-profile authors, but their primary and continuing mission was to anticipate and supply the demand for schoolbooks. The chapter considers the individual branches’ publications, sales, distribution, financial positions, and management, as well as their interactions with one another and with Oxford. The chapter also assesses the responses of the Press and its African branches to regime change, corruption, government educational policies, currency fluctuations, and indigenization movements.

Abstract:
This study offers a chronological history of seal fishing in the Falkland Islands and Dependencies from the eighteenth century to the early twenty-first. It concerns the fluctuating seal population due to sealing; the Atlantic and global demand for seal fur and oil; the competition between American, British, and Canadian sealers over the territory’s seal stocks; and the attempts by various ruling governments to prioritise domestic sealing, maintain sufficient seal stocks, and continue to make profit. It is comprised of nine chapters, the first and last chapters of which serve as introduction and conclusion. The study also includes eight appendices presenting tabled statistics, and a select bibliography. The appendices concern seal skin imports into London; vessel details at Puerto Soledad; the value and amount of seal products exported from the Falklands; Canadian sealing vessels entering Port Stanley; seal catch and oil yield in South Georgia; South Georgian seal catch summaries; South Georgian commercial catches by sealing division; and marine mammal products landed in the Newfoundland fisheries region.
